Book Description
Hailed as one of the greatest minds of our times, Richard Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) is known as an American visionary. Designer, architect, engineer, inventor, and philosopher, he was undeniably one of the key innovators of the 20th century. This volume provides a visually rich and complete overview of Fuller's design and architectural production, situating Fuller's projects in their historical context. The book features never-before-published material from the Fuller archives that were recently donated to Stanford University.Michael John Gorman's essay offers an in-depth analysis of Fuller's work-focusing more attention on his innovative architectural projects than to other aspects of Fuller's "design science"-as well as an interesting perspective on post-war American society and architectural culture. Chapters include concepts of Fuller's philosophy, his manifesto for mass-produced housing, the role of mobile shelter in transforming behavior, geodesic domes, and Fuller's early experiments. Fuller's achievements, astonishing design, and production are fully documented using original and often unknown archival materials.

Streamlined Overview of the life and work of Spaceship Earths first Test Pilot.......2006-02-08
Michael Gorman is the first of a new generation of Fuller Biographers who were too young to ever have known Buckminster Fuller personally. Yet this allows a fresh and critical overview of the great man's successes and failures. The book is arranged in chronological order giving a concise and vibrant account Fuller's amazing life story. However it is the inventions (realised and unrealised) he produced along the way that is the focus of this book. These inventions (or artefacts as Fuller preferred) are also the authors vehicle to explain Fuller's singular and highly developed personal philosophy.
Gorman's time in Stanford working on Fuller's personal Chronofiles is evident in the book. A very wide range of source material has been consulted including interviews with collaborators. A look at Stanford Humanities website will show you how enthusiastically they have embraced their role as custodians of Fuller's personal archives. This book seems to have been borne out of this time.
This is the ideal first book for someone who wants to learn a lot about Bucky quickly. I would recommend this to Architecture schools especially. It is the most accessible and presentable of my big collection of Fuller books. All his major inventions are appraised. Gorman's skilful synopsis of synergetic and Geodesic geometry will also enlighten the novice.
I would also recommend the book to die-hard Buckminster Fuller fans for beautiful unearthed pictures of the Montreal Expo dome in flames, craftsmen working on the Dymaxion Car and Domes in every guise imaginable. The Author's writing style will also delight new and old Fuller fans. Gorman is capable of citing little known influences on Fuller and makes interesting parallels with other visionaries form the world of art and science. It seems to me Fuller had Forrest Gump like knack of cropping up at historical events - Gorman points out the Kitchen Debate happened in a Geodesic dome.
While the author obviously admired Fullers work he does not hold him in complete reverence as others have. His successes and failures are examined in an attempt to distil what is Bucky's real architectural and philosophical legacy. Fuller believed his discoveries were more important than his own biographical details making this a fitting tribute. The book captures the paradox of Fuller in all his complexities. A non conformist egalitarian, a practical utopian and a successful failure.
Go read, and then try Fullers own Critical path if you really want your head rewired.
Great Expectations Unfulfilled.......2006-02-01
This book is not a complete biography of Buckminster Fuller. It is not a complete review of Buckminster Fuller's work. I did not expect them to be such.
However, I was expecting a review of work related to mobility, as implied by the title. What Gorman provides is a light biography and work review, with a long narrative of synergetic geometry and other principles (i.e. lots of talk of tetrahedrons, cuboctahedrons, icosahedrons, and axes, when diagrams would have been infinitely more helpful). The book is essentially a biography/career review-lite.
Although he does present a decent amount of information, I found the book to be rather rambling and disconnected from its theme. It seems Gorman became lost at times in Fuller's principles, forgetting that the book was to be centered around Fuller's work from the perspective of mobility. He seems to pop up every now and then to blatantly remind the reader (and perhaps himself) of the theme, but the content sort of betrays it.
Other problems I had are:
1) A significant number of photos had already been presented in previous works (albeit more fuzzy). I wondered if anything new had actually been contributed by this book, visually.
2) Gorman is far too apologetic when it comes to Fuller's view of intellectual property. Fuller claimed students' work as his own without giving them credit, claimed that he was the founder of tensegrity (rather than Snelson; and I'd bet Fuller claimed this at times without the caveat that Snelson was creating art, rather than a functional engineering principle), and claimed that he invented the octet truss when he was 4 years old to dispute a counterclaim that Alexander Graham Bell had actually come up with the structure (somehow, a kindergarten teacher corroborated this story). Somehow, Gorman thinks Fuller's approach was "rational," and actually argues that stealing the credit of his students' work was merely Fuller protecting his own intellectual property (p. 122; see pp. 116, 117, 177, 178).
In short, Gorman loses the theme of his book by its chronological retelling of Fuller's life. Instead, this book should have been an argument of how Fuller designed for mobility without all of the background on Fuller's lifetime evolution.
In his colloquial book Bucky Works, Baldwin provides a decent bibliography that should be consulted for better books and works on Fuller (although Bucky Works itself is more of a discussion of Fuller projects in which Baldwin was involved). I'd consult Baldwin's bibliography before this book.

Book Description
It took a few years of false starts but now itÕs official: the graphic novel form is the fastest growing new category of publishing, rising like a meteor. Stephen (The 101 Best Graphic Novels) Weiner takes us on a historical tour of this format with a bit of background on comics as a whole.
Customer Reviews:
A Work of Complete Genius.......2004-09-12
In this tiresome age of long-winded reiterations and thematic cudgels we must realize that the degereration of traditional literary fiction is upon us. And so many have been searching for a Northwest Passage if you will. Fortanitly that search has just ended as our Teddy Rooselelt plowed his way through the mosquito infested Panama. He has revealed a Brave New World, a world beyond Marx's wildest dreams, in which picture and word each do they share. Seeing as we are Communists we no longer advocate the seperation of color and style. From each according to his ability, and, most importantly, to each according his need!
Detailing the appearance of classics in the field.......2004-03-04
Graphic novels are a growing part of bookstores and even college courses, but until now no history of their origins and growth has been presented. Stephen Weiner, a comics historian and specialist in children's literature, provides this first history, detailing the appearance of classics in the field, including sample black and white illustrations from these classics, and filling in many gaps in the genre's history. Any fan of the graphic novel format will find The Rise Of The Graphic Novel revealing.

Can't judge a book by it's cover.......2003-10-11
At first glance, this book looks interesting. The I Ching certainly overextends the bounds of words and snapshots of the natural process of change to match the 64 hexagrams seems a great idea. But the pictures in this book must only seem interesting to a photographer, as they are full of modernist effects such as cut outs, blurs, etc...most of them in black and white and printed poorly so that one cannot even make out the intent behind the photograph. In fact, the pictures fail to suggest the state of transition of any of the hexagrams. And to top it all off, the translation itself is quite poor. It lacks any eastern insight or flavor without which the I Ching is reduced to mystic malarkie.
I can recommend this book to anyone who appreciates Eastern.......1999-10-02
The Photographic I Ching is one of those books that had a lasting effect on my life. This is due to the fact that I am a photographer and found the prints incredible. Gary Woods inspired me to make more ethereal images and to get back into older photo processes. The text was my first introduction to the I Ching and I found it fascinating. I was very disappointed to find that this book is now out-of-print. I can recommend it highly to anyone who appreciates Eastern thought and/or great photography. I myself am doing more research to find more of Gary Woods' photos on the internet and elsewhere.

Carries on the family biographical tradition.......1998-07-15
This book carries on the family tradition of sons writing about fathers. The author's grandfather, the famous Prime Minister, had much earlier written a biography of his father, also named Randolph, which was generally poorly reviewed at the time and essentially constituted a glorification of the subject. The current work, which purports to be objective, reveals a startingly adventurous life, lived always within the shadow of the famous father. I think that objectivity is achieved (the author's father could be difficult, to way the least but was also generous to a fault and loyal regardless of consequences). The reader will be surprised at the many intellectual and other accomplishments of the subject of this biohgraphy. Toward the end of his life, Randolph was commissioned to write the Great Biography (about his famous father), and the period when he completed the first two volumes of this undertaking (Martin Gilbert finished the task) is particularly interesting.! ! The author's earliest recollections come into play in the second half of the book, which include a large number of historically significant individuals (of course, his famous grandfather, but many other British political luminaries as well). Churchill buffs will very much enjoy this book.

Book Description
Garrison/Noreen has been- and still is- the market-leading text in managerial accounting, having educated close to 2 million students since its inception. In short, Garrison is the Guide in Managerial Accounting. The lighthouse on the cover symbolizes that for this difficult course, Garrison's comprehensive but manageable coverage, author-written supplements, and peerless end-of-chapter material makes it a safe and dependable choice for instructors and students alike. The loyalty and following it has achieved is due to the authors unwavering commitment to three simple principles: relevance, balance, and clarity.
- Relevance- Every effort has been made to help students relate the concepts in this book to decisions made by working managers. The Managerial Accounting in Action segments within the chapters help students apply concepts to real world problems.
- Balance- Garrison mixes its coverage to include a variety of both service and manufacturing organizations- this includes new coverage of e-commerce and e-tailers. Service examples have been expanded in this new edition and these are marked with a S icon in the margins.
- Clarity- The entire supplements package has been written by the author team to insure that students and professors will work with clear, well-written supplements that employ consistent terminology.
Customer Reviews:
Well Written.......2007-09-24
The book is very concise & well written. It has helped me tremeendously in my Managerial Accounting class, and is very easy to understand.
Everything as expected!.......2007-02-16
The items arrived as expected; the price of the book was below the university bookstore.
Fair.......2007-01-10
The condition of the book when I received was not as good as stated. I did expedited shipping but it was just as slow as the regular shipping rate.
Not worth the money.......2007-01-03
This book was required for the class I took. The Ready Notes is a bound set of Powerpoint slides (3 per page). The instructor did not use the entire set of slides. I could have taken notes during the lecture and saved the money.
Good book .......2006-11-14
It is good book to learn managerial accounting and it also good to keep it as a reference.
Book Description
This acclaimed, market-leading book embraces the basic theme of "different costs for different purposes." Cost Accounting reaches beyond cost accounting procedures to consider concepts, analyses, and management. Coverage includes discussions on cost-volume-profit analysis; job costing methods; activity-based costing; variance analysis; process costing; the Internet and World Wide Web; organization structure; supply chain; the value-chain concept; and more. For those interested in cost accounting, economics, and corporate finance.

the best costing book
Cost Accounting-A Managerial Emphasis by Horngren et al........2003-07-20
In graduate school, I utilized this text. In addition, the work
was helpful in preparing for and passing the Uniform CPA Exam.
There is good coverage of cost-volume analysis, equivalent
units, margin analysis and other important topics for qualifying
examinations i.e. CPA Exam. The tables and graphical
presentations are helpful as are the problem sets. This work is
for the serious student in accounting. The course requires some
serious study, particularly in the area of process costing.
the best costing book.......2002-12-07
I've studied cost accounting for 2 years in Hong Kong. The first year I used a really bad text book named 'Costing', I hated studying Costing. However after using the 'Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis (10 Edition)', I become interested in Costing and Management Accounting. And deceide to have CMA exam in future. THIS BOOK IS REALLY GOOD ONE.
A standard text for cost accounting.......2002-10-24
If you are looking for a single volume "bible" on cost accounting, this is likely the best book in print today to fit that bill. It is comprehensive in scope yet has many strengths to ease comprehension and aid readability.
The topics are grouped in six main sections each with several chapters on that topic. Since it is unlikely that you will read this reference / text book left to right as you would a novel this organization helps in finding what you are looking for and focusing on the area(s) of interest.
There are many helpful illustrations and a good use of color as well as chapter summaries and all the exercises you could ever hope for.
A very excellent feature is the use of application problems that take you step-by-step through building an Excel spreadsheet. This is tremendously useful.
The web support is also a good help as well as the streaming video vignettes.
I honestly find this topic very interesting and the 11th edition of this book to be a very valuable resource.
Highly recommended........2002-08-27
Book was received as described and was shipped on time. AAA+
Customer Reviews:
Much Better Than The 9th Edition.......2003-02-07
I have been a fan of Lawrence J. Gitman's writing style for years. His approach to finance is simple to understand & this is very beneficial for both students & teachers. The 10th Edition of "Principles of Managerial Finance" (Hardcover) has the following improvements:
a. Calculation of "n" in the chapter of "Time Value of Money"
b. Adding the "Free Cash Flow Valuation Model" in the chapter of "Stock Valuation"
c. Adding "Strategic Net Present Value (NPV)" in the chapter of "Risk & Refinements in Capital Budgeting"
d. Having two (2) "Time Value of Money Tables":
d.1. more detailed tables (in terms of more "i"; note: "i" was formerly "k" in the 9th Edition) located at the back of the book
d.2. tables, printed on thick paper, located at the front of the book that is perforated (can be pulled out)
e. Up to date real world examples
f. Better presentation of the topics, notably the topics on Bond & Stock Valuation
g. The Hardcover Edition includes an Excel-based student software on the book's Companion Web Site valid for six (6) months upon activation.
The book comes with a CD-ROM. The exercises have topics listed before them. This is beneficial both for students & teachers (students can EASILY practice what they've learned while teachers can give assignments by simply browsing the topics).
This is an outstanding basic finance book & I haven't found another one that's better. However, outstanding as this book is, there is still room for improvement. My suggestions are:
a. Explain "deferred annuities" (both for ordinary annuity & annuity due)
b. Present the computation of "i" & "n" using algebra (in addition to using the methods presented in the book)
c. Include the process of interpolation in the book proper
d. Fully discuss the "Average Rate of Return"(ARR), "Discounted Payback Period" (DPP), & "Modified Internal Rate of Return" (MIRR) in the chapter of "Capital Budgeting Techniques"
e. Better explain the "Earnings Before Interest & Taxes (EBIT)-Earnings Per Share (EPS) Approach" in the chapter of "Capital Stucture"
f. Correct the error (I believe this to be an editing error) on the formula for standard deviation (Equation 5.3a, page 222, footnote section)
g. Include a "Challenging Exercises Section" for every chapter where the problems are more complex & the topics are NOT stated before them
h. Increase the six (6) month student subscription to the book's Companion Web Site to one (1) year.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn basic finance. This book is well worth buying & KEEPING.
Great Finance Book But Could Still Be Improved.......2001-01-07
This book, "Principles of Managerial Finance" (9th Edition), is an excellent finance book. It explains financial concepts in an easy-to-understand manner. Gitman gives you a step-by-step guide to understanding finance. Gone are the days when one dreads reading a finance book because of complexity. You'll actually look forward to reading this book. However, there are some items that need to be added/fully explained in the book itself (like how to interpolate, finding the number of periods in the time value of money, calculating free cash flows in valuation, etc.) & there are things that need to be clarified in the cost of capital & capital budgeting techniques sections. Nevertheless, it is still a great book well worth buying.
College Text.......2000-06-30
Having struggled through many finance courses this text truely brought the area of finance into a much clearer perspective for me. It provides a lot of general knowledge about the field and as a stand alone text is very useful. However, the assignments that accompanied the text definitley lacked substance and did not prove to be worthwhile.
