A beautiful book by a controversial author.......2003-01-09

Leni Riefenstahl is a beautiful photographer. Sadly, her talents and reputation have been tarnished by the fact that she made the propaganda film that helped Adolf Hitler come to power: TRIUMPH OF THE WILL. Riefenstahl claims that she was unaware of Hitler's plans, but this association still taints her name and all works she would later produce, including LAST OF THE NUBA. Some accused Riefenstahl of having a "fascist aesthetic" because the athletic and well proportioned members take center stage in LAST OF THE NUBA, while the elders and women of the tribe are largely ignored.

Controversy aside, this is a beautiful book. The Nuba are a beautiful people, and Riefenstahl's talents are up to the task of capturing it. Some pictures are black-and-white, but they are mostly color reproductions with a slight golden hue. They have a very gritty feel to them, which is excellent for depicting a group of men whose lives often revolve around wrestling; there are many shots of the wrestlers in action.

"Unleashing Your Inner Dog" is a wonderful blend of prose and illustration. Mari Gayatri-Stein has the rare distinction of being both a literary and a visual artist, and both talents drew me delightfully through the book. The writing is lyrical without being precious, authentic without being confessional. The cartoons are wry and kind - the best combination for such illustrations, and a difficult balance to attain. "Inner Dog" is one of those handy books you can read in manageable bites. I looked forward every evening to sliding into bed and reading for five or ten minutes, then falling asleep in the kind of good mood only a dog can inspire. Whether you want to treat yourself to a little gem or give a welcome gift, I recommend this book unreservedly.

As a meditator striving to live in the moment and appreciate the small miracles of every day life, I was absolutely delighted to discover Mari Stein's "Inner Dog." She describes the challenges of being human with warm, loving humor. And the illustrations are exquisite! This is a book I can pick up over and over, each time discovering some new way to practice "loving kindness" when seeing myself through the eyes of my pet. I might add that I am owned by a cat who continually teaches me to stretch my body and my mind and not get too attached to anything.

Cody Carlyle and Josh Pierce are bounty hunters. They have known each other a long time and for most of that time, Josh has been trying to get Cody into bed. Cody is very attracted to Josh, she can't stop thinking about sex when he is around her, but Josh plays the field and Cody guards her body and heart well. Cody doesn't want to get her heart broken so she declines Josh's blatant flirtations until one night when her defenses are low and she doesn't want to fight her attraction anymore.

It's better than she thought it would be between them, and yet Cody keeps her distance. Everyone she has ever loved has walked out on her and she knows Josh is not a staying around kind of guy. Her head knows this but her body and mind are reluctant to agree. Josh can't get Cody out of his mind. Even after they sleep together again, his desire for her keeps growing.

Just when Cody convinces herself to stay away from Josh, he proposes they team up to catch a high profile skip. Cody wonders though if it's the job or her heart that has her saying yes to Josh. Soon, their partnership becomes much more than either of them planned.

Hell On Wheels took me on a wild ride where the days are dangerous and the nights are steamy. Cody is a beauty and a spitfire! When she allows herself to give in to her desires, she and Josh are perfect together. Josh is sinfully handsome and very sexy. I love seeing a lady's man fall in love. Josh really does right by Cody. The sex is hot and the emotions are tender in Hell On Wheels. It's a really fun and very passionate story.

I think one of the things I enjoyed about this book was an original plot! Josh and Cody are bounty hunters working for the same agency. Cody, known for her tough attitude, and Josh, the local player, have been eyeing each other from afar for a long time. Hoping to each get the other "out of their system", they go in partnership to hunt down an accused murderer who has jumped bail. The sex is hot and the story is not so predictable that you see everything coming before it happens. The only thing I would have enjoyed, was to know a little bit more about Josh. I disagree with Disappointed (and company), the fun of reading is getting to know the characters, and I don't think Ms.Kelly drug the story out at all. Looking forward to reading more of her books!

The story would have been better, except it was drawen out too long with the main 2 characters. I was getting tried of the way they both kept thinking of the pass problems. The story would have been better if it was 50 to 60 pages shorter.
I still like Karen kelley and will buy more of her books.

I have read and other Kathy Kelley books, but I found this one very disappointing. The 2 main characters were one dimensional and boring. It seems that the only plot was just to glue the sex scenec together. Not a book I would recommend.

One heck of a sexy ride!.......2006-06-18

Cody is an independent, self sufficient sexy bounty hunter. Josh is not only a bounty hunter but also a sexy package of looks and strength all wrapped up in one. The thing is when Cody & Josh are together they turn up a heat enough to light up the entire state of Texas. Both of them have a big chip on their shoulders, also they are as stubborn as a mule, but they soon discovered that fighting the attraction between them is useless, the more time they spend together the more they want each other. In order to catch a mayor skip they decide to combine their minds and efforts and that took them on the ride of their life. They have to learn to deal with the past and all the baggage it entails. Would they be able to work together and stay unattached or will they surrender to their attraction and stay together? Karen wrote a really sassy, sexy story with characters that will make you laugh and will keep you at the edge of your seat. This is one book that will snare your attention from start to finish and will keep you turning pages all along, you really do not want to miss it.

I expected to have a good view of USA armor troops, but alas...too much fluff not enough depth. To me WW2 was not covered well and the Vietnam era not well enough. Maybe I was expecting much too much from 108 pages, and I reckon the color photos they tell you about are only the cover photos. I guess this book is like a M-4 Sherman--promised more than it delivered.

At last a look at Armerican armor crews.......1999-12-31

The excellent GI series continues with a look at the uniforms and equipment used by US Army tank crewmen from the beginnings of tank warfare in WW1 to the modern day. This is the first time an author has focused on just the armored troops, and it was long overdue. Most of the book covers the WW2 period, which it does quite well. The weak point is that tank crews from the Korean War and Vietnam are covered only briefly, and there is weak coverage on the uniform variations seen in the 50's and 60's. The Gulf War gets better treatment. Text is minimal, consisting mostly of photo captions (which are well done). Photo selection and reproduction is excellent, except for some modern color photos (interestingly, the WW2 color is great!). Not the ultimate work on the US armored forces, but an essential reference for historians, collectors, and model-builders.

The hell you say!.......2005-02-04

Nice book for cyclists. [some clod edited my review here] Take it from an aging Cat IV whose racing days have long past, Mr. Herschon's books -- especially this one -- are a fantastic collection of essays on the wonderful world of bike racing, bike riding, and bike Zen in general. If you have ever been to a USCF road race, "cone crit", track race, casually watch the Tour de Surrender Monkeys, or otherwise like any other manifestation of this sport, then you owe it to yourself to read this and other works of his.

He is easily the Tom Wolfe of this sport, his works "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Tests" or "Pump House" gang of cycling.

I wept, I cried, I wrote bad checks.

It did not, however, cause me to change my low opinion of Finder's "Extraordinary Powers", the flat tire of the spy genre.

A nice compilation for cyclists.......2003-01-03

Although this book may be slightly dated (consisting of a compilation of approximately 40 articles written for cycling publications in the late '80s and early '90s), the reading is still enjoyable and thought-provoking. Ranging from stories about the pro racing circuit to club rides and everything in between, the author does a nice job on this book. Some of the articles made me think about things I've experienced as a cyclist, but never really thought much about until seeing it on paper.
My favorite was the interview with Bob Roll & Alex Stieda (two pro cyclists from 10-15 years ago). Bob Roll is hilarious and this comes across loud & clear in the interview (I wish his book was still in print - I'll bet that's a real knee-slapper!).
"Half-Wheel Hell" makes a great way to relax for a few minutes as you catch your breath from the evening's ride. Probably not of much value to non-cyclists, though.

It was supposed to be a pleasant ride back home from Sulfur,Montana after the wedding of a long time friend. Sheriff Ben Stillman was travelling with his wife Fay ,Judge Bannon and friends.Everything was going fine,but very shortly all hell would be breaking out.
Angus Whateley has just been released from prison and has gathered together a bunch of family and friends to revenge the hanging of his two sons who he is convinced were wrongly convicted by Judge Bannon.While Angus was really after only the Judge,things really expanded as he and his henchmen decided to go after the stagecoach and therefore all aboard.
Peter gives us a good western tale with tons of action on every page.Ben Stillman is as determined to get everyone safely back home to Clantick as Angus is to get his revenge on the Judge. If a lot of people were going to die,so be it as far as Angus was concerned.
The story is filled with shootings both at distances and close at hand struggles. There are several women involved and those in the wedding party are all upstanding folks and friends;the gang that Angus has put together are a real mixed bag of underlings and family over whom he has complete control.The hatred this gang has is only superceded by their lack of skills and general stupidity. Nevertheless they are a real vicious lot that seem an impossibility to to escape from.
Peter develops each of these characters and we are in for some great surprises.These women of the Old West have some real skills in handling firearms that will teach their attackers a thing or two.
About two thirds of the way through the book an awful truth comes out that changes the complexion of everything;but you'll have to wait to see what that is.
There are a whole lot of very exciting things that keep happening that would make this story a wonderful movie.
This continual flow of fast paced action makes it a suspense filled saga and it is very hard to put down once you get started.
Peters skills of describing the people,landscape,guns,rifles,horses,riding a speeding stagecoachcampsites,etc. are so good you feel you are right there in the middle of the action.
I always enjoy the artwork on the covers of Western novels.The artwork on this is a great scene and very well done but there are many more scenes from the story that would be much more dramatic. The final scene of Judge Bannon and his wife Prudence will remain with you well after you finish the book.
So, if you think the cover is the height of the action you're gonna find in this story;hold on to your hat;you're in for a real ride.

Hell on Wheels is unforgettable. The realistic and compelling portrayals of the characters, the insights into relationships, and the combination of the usual and unusual make this novel unforgettable. Reading this novel changed my perceptions not just of the disabled, but of love relationships: Weiss knows how to convey the power of lust, attachment, rivalry and aggression in all important connections. Weiss is a wonderful novelist and I highly recommend reading this, and his other novels!

Weiss achieves difficult combination of unlikable charachters with sympathetic plights. Hell on Wheels makes you think about your dark side, about what you would do and what you would forgive. Not to mention, it's entertaining as hell. Weiss is a master.

Wheelchair bound man reviews his life and circumstances.......1998-01-15

Originally published several years ago, this is the story of a man recalling through therapy of sculpture how he became wheelchair bound and his feelings on being a disabled athlete. Very funny and rather sad in places, anyone who enjoyed his Roaches Have No King (a.k.a. Unnatural Selection) book will enjoy it.

Greg Jacobs really rose to the occassion with this book! Talk about an interesting look into the life and times of rock and roll bands touring. It was almost like being there. I saw a movie recently that followed a rock band and this should be in the credits as the book to accompany it. Every word is compiled and put together so that the reader will finish this book in one sitting..GUARANTEED! I wish that there was another book after it. Where did this guy come from?

It was commanded by the charismatic Major-General George S. Patton from January 1941 to February 1942. Elements of 2nd Armored first saw action in North Africa, landing at Casablanca, and later taking part in the fighting at Beja, Tunisia, but the division as a whole did not enter combat until the invasion of Sicily, where it performed well.

After the Sicilian campaign, the division trained in England for the invasion of Normandy, landing on D+3, and going into action near Carentan; it would go on to play a significant role in the Falaise Gap battles, subsequently racing across France through Belgium and into Germany at Schimmert on 18 September 1944. The division also played an important role during the Ardennes offensive, blunting the German Fifth Panzer Army's penetration of American lines.

This book was a great outline for buying a pre-construction home. The author gives general overviews of the building process. He makes some interesting points on topics such as "sight lines" and interior design that I have not seen often in other home buying literature.

I give this four stars because it wasn't very in depth in any of the chapters. A bonus is the sixty-some page glossary of real estate terms at the end of the book. Enjoy!

The additional information about plans and why the layout and design are important really helped me. It helped explain the difference in price for homes that look the same but feel larger or smaller when you move around in them. Thanks Mr Weekley

I was familiar with David Weekley's homebuilding company so I was afraid that this book would only contain information about building a new home. I was really pleased to find that this book had great advice for purchasing an older home. There were so many "secrets" that helped me through my home buying experience. Thank you David!

As a first-time buyer, I found this book very helpful in wading through the process. David's able to de-mystify the process and he pointed out some things to look for that helped me. Even though he is more familiar with new homes (as a builder), his advice about pre-owned homes works. In fact, I used it to buy my pre-owned home.

Please ignore the reader from Bothell, WA who apparently does not get the pun in the title of this book and proceeds to levy some b.s. criticism on a book he/she apparently didn't really read.

This book is geared toward buyers of new homes, especially construction homes, but has information that can help any home buyer. I myself am looking to buy a condo and I especially enjoyed the chapters on "curb appeal" (exterior) and floor plans. The latter topic is covered in a lot of details with examples of good layouts and bad layouts. You may not totally agree with what the author says should be a good floor plan -- and I don't -- but it's great to know what the latest trend in floor planning is and what angles (no pun intended) you should see a home from.

The book covers from why you should buy a home to what to do if you are unhappy with your newly bought home. Again, the target audience is really potential buyers of new homes, so there's a lot of information on that, like seeking out a builder's reputation, working with salespeople (as opposed to real estate agents), etc.

I recommend this book as a second book for getting home-buying advice. For more in-depth coverage of mundane home-buying topics such as mortgages and dealing with agents and closing, check the Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying and Selling a Home.
