Book Description
Piloting a single-engine biplane high above Washington D.C. in 1920, the intrepid inventor and aviation pioneer Sherman Fairchild first tested his custom-built sky camera, effectively founding the aerial photography company that would bear his name. Roaming America's skies for the next 40 years, the photographers of the Fairchild Aerial Survey Company documented nearly every major city in the United States. Their images, both maplike shots from high above, and low-angle raking views, form a definitive portrait of the American landscape. Rescued from destruction in the 1970s, the Fairchild archive was scattered across the country. Painstakingly reassembled for this book, the images (many of which have never been seen before) are brought together here for the first time. This beautifully produced, large format book collects over 125 extraordinary images taken between the 1920s and the 1960s. The photographs, valued both as works of art and as tools for urban historians, often capture historic moments: the Capitol Building during Franklin Delano Roosevelt's first inauguration and Yankee Stadium during Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series. Others depict architectural landmarks: the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, the Washington Monument, Hoover Dam, and Alcatraz, to name a few. Some of the cities revealed in astonishing detail include: Albuquerque, Atlanta, Baltimore, Berkeley, Boston, Cedar Rapids, Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Des Moines, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Miam,i Minneapolis, New Orleans, New York, Oakland, Palo Alto, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Reno, Salt Lake City, St. Louis, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington
Customer Reviews:
Sorry to bring the average down, but..........2002-12-31
It's a risky business buying a book based on a few page-scans and a short description, but I'm glad I took a chance on this one. Well, mostly! The book is great -- well designed, well printed, detailed photographs, interesting topic, really nice coffee-table book -- but I can't say the same for my own copy. The first copy I received had a torn page. No major problem considering Amazon's customer-friendly returns policy. But the replacement copy was even worse -- pages stuck together (which I had to cut apart), poorly-fitting dust jacket, and poorly packaged, resulting in some cover abrasion, especially not desired on a book such as this. I hope you're luckier with your copy! 5-star book, 1-star ...
Looking at the sky's floor, in detail........2002-07-29
The photos in this book are the kind you pore over, there is just so much to see. These 125 are just some of the thousands and thousands taken by the Fairchild Aerial Survey Company from the twenties to the sixties. They are mostly large (very well printed) images of American cities and fortunately the majority are oblique shots rather than taken looking straight down. With the oblique angle you can see the three-dimensional look of buildings and the way a city stretches into the distance. Many of the photos show part of a cities downtown area with the building detail and traffic clearly visible.
Author Campanella writes a short history of the Fairchild company and its founder Sherman Fairchild. An amazing man who ran a company that designed cameras, aircraft, navigational aids, engines, optical equipment and into the sixties he encouraged the development of the electronic age.
The book is a good opportunity to see why American cities look the way they do. Page ninety-five shows Tucumcari, New Mexico, in 1940, though not a big place yet the grid pattern of blocks has been established and roads built for future houses, yet the town is not at right-angles to Route 66 which passes through one side. Pages 112 and 113 show the same shots of downtown Los Angeles taken in 1940 and 1957, the latter now has the Harbor Freeway just over a block wide running through it..
As you would expect all the photos are very clear as they were used by local government and other concerns. Not many were taken of cities in the Pacific Northwest due to atmospheric conditions. Bright sunny days caused problems too, buildings created really dark shadows that obscured detail.
This is a stunning book that planners, architects and those just curious about the look of man-made America from above will enjoy. BTW, a tip of the hat to book designers, Paul Carlos and Ursula Barbour for doing a super job with the layouts and typography. Though these Fairchild photos were taken for commercial reasons other photographers have taken more expressive aerial images and I can recommend these two books of photographs, taken just a few hundred feet off the ground. `Look At The Land' by Alex MacLean, he has an eye for colorful patterns and shapes created by commercial development across America and `This Land Is Your Land' by Marilyn Bridges, she takes advantage of the deep shadows created by sunlight in her black and whites images of town and country.

Just wonderful.
Particularly interesting if you are familiar with lower Manhattan (although -- there are many photos of other cities, too).

"Viewing his amazing images might lead to discouragement, however...Those Grand Canyon visitors following Annerino's advice of how and where to take perfect shots will undoubtedly visit scenic locales worthy of superb photographs."

Poor Excuse for a Photographer's Guide.......2006-08-22
I purchased this book in the hope of finding just a few helpful tips on photographing the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Although the introduction made some great promises, the rest of this short work didn't live up to its title. Instead of providing any information on the popular South Rim area of the Grand Canyon, the author (John Annerino) focused on obscure, difficult to reach locations. And although I concede that some photographers might find it useful to know about these distant locations, I found Annerino's information terse and lacking even in those areas. For the popular South Rim area, there is a complete lack of information. I was looking for a book that contained some basic observations as to which locations might be best for sunrise and sunset photography. This book didn't contain any of that information. From the photographs found in this book, John Annerino appears to have a nice portfolio of Grand Canyon photography. However, I found the book a poor excuse for a "Photographer's Guide." Don't waste your money. You can glean more information from the "Frommer's Grand Canyon National Park" or from a short search of the Internet.

Book Description
This book is the sequel to ON INTELLIGENCE: Spies and Secrecy in an Open World (AFCEA International Press, 2000). That book, written largely for government and corporate intelligence professionals, remains the basic reference volume for the future of global intelligence enterprises. This book, by contrast, is a completely new effort that is written for every citizen of every countrythe "intelligence minutemen" of the 21st Century. In the aftermath of the 11 September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, attacks carried out by a non-state actor skilled at asymmetric warfare and using our own capabilities against usattacks followed quickly by a nation-wide anthrax assault that closed Congress and terrified the U.S. Postal Serviceit is imperative that every citizen have a clear-headed understanding of what is at stake and what needs to be done to keep not only America, but all civilized communities safe. It is especially imperative that citizens understand that the world is already at war, with millions of refugees in 67 countries, plagues sweeping across 59 countries, mass starvation in 27 countries, and deliberate genocide campaigns in 18 countries. These are "facts of life" that our schools, our media and even our intelligence communities have been unwilling and unable to represent intelligently to the public. It is against this backdrop of global chaos that terrorism rises.
Customer Reviews:
Ironic.......2006-12-13
I find it difficult to believe that someone who endorses 9-11 conspiracy theories (see the authors review of "9-11 Mysteries" on December 7th) could be viewed as an authority on intelligence issues. If he ever had any credibility in the field, he's long since gone over the deep end.
Ironically, its people like him and his ilk, who believe a neconservative/Israeli conspiracy was behind the destruction of the twin towers, that best undermine the central premise of his book: that ordinary citizens need to take a greater role in intelligence. If 9-11 conspiracy theories are the sort of mind-numbingly stupid, paranoid output that can be expected from the sort of amatuer intelligence agents Steele wishes for, I'd prefer to leave it to professionals.
The Peoples' Intelligence Agency.......2006-08-09
This was in many ways a difficult book to read and is even more difficult to review. It contains a number of original ideas on intelligence reform, national security, and the general state of the world. Yet they are presented in a rather choppy style that relies rather heavily on numerous diagrams, charts, and tables as well as lists of thoughts. Still this book is worth reading because Robert D. Steele takes on the business of intelligence reform in a comprehensive and refreshingly different approach.
The guiding, but unstated premise of this book appears to be that in the chaotic world of the 21st Century, intelligence is too important to be left only to the intelligence bureaucracy of the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC). According to Steele, it is time that the business of producing national intelligence was shared with the academic and business communities, with state and local authorities, and even with private citizens. Steele also makes the perfectly valid point that open sources can supply up to 80 per cent of the unprocessed data required to produce intelligence. Incidentally, Steele recognizes the quagmire the Internet poses to researchers and wisely offers suggestions for avoiding the large amount of misinformation that can be found on the net. The book offers some structural reforms to the IC, but its most valuable contributions are its proposals for cultural changes in the way that intelligence is produced and used.
Beyond its choppy style, however, the book is flawed. Steele seems curiously ignorant of the actual processes of intelligence production where by unprocessed information (data) acquired by source(s) is transformed into useful knowledge (intelligence) organized by subject(s). This transformation is accomplished by various combinations of processing, research, and analysis. His suggestion to concentrate processing of data from all sources into one agency is incredibly ill informed. In the same manner, he treats Geographic Information Systems (GIS) rather lightly, although they have been proven to be invaluable not only for visualization, but also for organizing and interpreting collected data and would be an ideal medium for integrating and presenting all source data. Finally he clearly does not know as much about the arcane world of technical intelligence as he thinks he does which leads him to some erroneous conclusions.
Review of The New Craft of Inteligence.......2004-08-06
My deepest hope for the United States, and indeed, Earth is that decision makers would read this book, stew over it, let it keep them up at nights, and to finally get down to business. This book serves as a tocsin for the nation to wake up to the challenges we are presently facing and those that are just around the bend.
As a nurse with an interest in public health issues, this book states a great case for the claim that "The idea that the health of every nation depends on the health of all others is not an empty piety but an epidemiological fact." That's no joke brothers and sisters; 59 countries with modern plagues can be ignored only to our peril.
Work at home as an intelligece analyst.......2003-08-03
Robert Steele, the maven of open source intel, explains why every citizen needs to start their own collection and analysis program. The first reason is so that she can understand the risk to herself of international crime and terrorism. The second reason is to protect her own liberty from domestic threats, private and public.
Buy this book. Think about what Steele has to say. The truth will set you free.
Needs a filter.......2002-09-25
Steele argues that with the Cold War over, asymmetric threats should be the top priority for our military, for our intelligence agencies, and for any citizen concerned with security.
Fair enough. How would you reconstitute our security structure? He gets down to specifics in chapter 15, where he gives 26 rules for "the new craft of intelligence." These include an emphasis on translation of foreign sources, an emphasis on cultural intelligence (knowing your enemy), and gearing intelligence toward needs and customers vs. just following old habits and using the most ready capabilities.
This book rewards the reader with many interesting ideas to consider. But Steele badly needs a filter--I feel that there are way too many bad ideas in this book relative to the few nuggets. For example, his view of the causes of terrorism owes much to Noam Chomsky--a poor source for cultural intelligence. Furthermore, some (most?) of his proposals, such as instituting a draconian military draft, are not well thought out.
I think that there is reason to be concerned that we have not adjusted out thinking on military and intelligence matters to line up with current threats. But if this book is the best alternative, then we should be even more concerned.

Best explanation of Soc Sec I've ever seen in print........1999-03-30
I'm a retired Soc. Sec. claims rep and I rate this book as the best explanation of Social Security benefits I've ever seen. The writer's style is great and he has a nice, friendly approach. It's not an easy subject, but he explains things in a simple, understandable fashion.
Excellent. Easy to read. Much helpful information........1998-11-22
Mr. Landis has succeeded in making a very complicated subject comprehensible to the average reader. All my questions about how the system works were answered. I appreciated the fact that Mr. Landis was employed by the Social Security Administration for many years and was able to give an insider's account of procedures and benefits. Many thanks for this very helpful book!
Still the best Social Security book I've found! Read on..........1997-01-09
OK, I'm the author and I'm biased. But the other Social
Security books out there still seem to be either very
poor-quality consumer guides (out of date, inaccurate, or
jargon), or the "Social Security is a rip-off and it will
crash in a few years" type.
My guiding principles in creating this book:
--accuracy (gained from many years working at SSA),
--plain English, and
--lots of concrete examples.
There are a few areas where the book has become obsolete:
--All the payment figures have increased with inflation.
--The 1.45% payroll tax on Medicare no longer has an
an earnings cap--it applies to all earnings, no matter
how high.
--The amount of Social Security benefits included in your
taxable income has increased from 50% to 85% for high-
income retirees.
Otherwise the book is still current. (OK, it's time for a
new edition, which I'll complete one of these days!)
I invite readers to contact me with individual questions
or comments. Happy reading!

Lots of talk, not much actual how to!.......2007-05-07
Content applies more to a very large scale developer (who probably doesn't need to read books!).
Simple, beginners book.......2000-07-14
Almost half of the book is devoted to the appendices, which contain numerous useful checklists, forms, financial spreadsheets and sample agreements.
Since this is an easy introductory text, the book does not delve into the difficult (but much more interesting) topics such as feasibility analysis, community opposition to development, and equity financing.
