Book Description
The world stands on the brink of an environmental crisis and the scale of the problem is daunting. But if everyone played their part, the cumulative benefit to the environment would be far-reaching. And where better to start than in our own homes? A must-have reference book with the most up-to-date information, plus inspirational photographs, Eco proves that sustainability in the home is both achievable and beautiful.
In the first part, Design, Elizabeth Wilhide focuses on the fundamentals to be considered, whether you are planning home improvements or building a house from scratch. These include siting, construction, energy efficiency, water and waste, gardening, and landscaping. Fifteen case studies demonstrate how architects from around the world have tackled these issues and succeeded in creating sustainable yet aspirational, liveable homes.
The second part, Surfaces and Finishes, provides an illustrated directory of the materials and surface finishes that are available to the eco-conscious homeowner, ranging from wood, bamboo, paper, and natural fibers to stone, linoleum, glass, metal, recycled plastic, and concrete.
Finally, In Practice offers strategies for eco-living that deliver maximum benefit with minimal changes of lifestyle. These are strategies--reducing consumption, repairing rather than replacing, recycling wherever possible--that everyone can adopt, whatever sort of home you live in.
Whether you follow Eco to the letter or adopt a more piecemeal approach, you can relax in the knowledge that every little bit counts. You will enjoy lower fuel bills and fewer allergy-related illnesses, but above all, you will be helping to make the world a healthier place for future generations.

More Information, Please.......2005-03-16
This is a great book. I really enjoyed reading it, and I re-read it from time to time to get the creative juices flowing (I'm studying Interior Architecture, with the inevitable focus on sustainable design). I'd recommend it to anyone, with the caveat that it's a little thin on technical detail. Readers should consider this more an eye-opener than a reference book. You get a good feel for what's possible, but not so much on how it's possible.
It's full of great pictures, though, and I mostly read books for the pictures.

What a Joy!.......2007-06-13
This book was love at first sight! I bought it last year and I am still in love. It is a lot of fun and mostly a joy to look at.
Great Fun, Teaching and Encouragement.......2004-11-19
This book is a lot of fun to look at and browse. The layout is clever and unusual and offers inviting illustrations of art technique and history. The knowledgeable and enthusiastic authors encourage beginners to dive in and start creating. I really like the open door approach. Unfortunately, the exercises they provide are often needlessly complicated, poorly organized and hard to follow. Other weaknesses are no page numbers (the table of contents has numbers though?) and obscure, rambling passages that might have been better left out. Still, this book contains many gems of technique and history - ready for discovery by the beginning and experienced artist alike.
A Great Book for Artists.......2001-11-27
This book was excellent. Done in a handwriiten style with many colored drawings, it tells about all media, techniques, and history of art. No matter what your medium is, you should enjoy it!
The Joy of Art: A Creative Guide for Beginning Painters.......2000-12-27
The book's jacket design is so inviting; however, inside its messages are confusing. This is primarily because of the way in which the material is presented. All text is handwritten, making it difficult to scan and read quickly (for this reader). There are many arrows and much cross-hatching. Reproductions of masterworks are dull and do not convey any of the power of the originals (and these comprise a large segment of the book). The format reminds me of an adventure book in which the reader must track the characters or plot through various segments using maps and arrows. The content is interesting once it is deciphered, but that was the problem: I felt as if I were deciphering a treasure map. Yes, a "treasure" map, because the book does offer good information. I did not have the patience to read it through, and prefer something more to the point with more clarity in the layout. For some reason, I think those who love Tolkein (_Hobbit_ and _Lord of the Rings_) and Adams (_Watership Down_) who want to learn more about painting would probably love this approach. I wonder if that's the case...
An Invaluable Treasure.......2000-12-05
I have never before seen a book on art like this one. It is a fascinating tour of art history - from prehistory to the modern day, as well as a highly accessible "how to" guide for people of all skill levels who have any desire to create art. The authors are so clever in the way they simplify what otherwise seems to the layperson to be such a complex process. Everyone in my family (ranging in age from 7 years to 77 years) has been enraptured with this book - it is already a family treasure!
Book Description
Like his famous relative, Jesse James has captured the imagination of the world. His bad- to-the-bones hand-built choppers with their trademark flames and Maltese cross logos are coveted by millions and ridden by wealthy motorcycle fanatics like Keanu Reeves and Shaquille O'Neal. He's one of People magazine's Sexiest Men Alive. But, only now, in I Am Jesse James, will his legion of fans get an up-close look at the man and his machines.
With one hundred and sixty pages of full-color photographs grouped into three sections covering his bikes, his shop, West Coast Choppers, and his lifestyle, I Am Jesse James will introduce the gritty, supertalented biker who makes no apologies for who he is and makes no compromises when it comes to the artistry of his bikes. Tattooed and devilishly handsome, Jesse James is the kind of rebel that many teenage boysand grown mendream about being.
Customer Reviews:
More balls than bikes.......2004-12-02
I was a bit disappointed in this book. I did like the bike photos that were shown... not many. Lots of filler of Jesse and his gang posing with guns. What looks like porn stars on the bikes.... I would rather just see the bikes man. I don't need to see pictures of Jesse playing tough guy holding a shotgun or burning money. Or his freaking dog dish with the WCC logo on it... my god. It makes you wonder what he is trying to make up for. His bikes are cool. They need to show more of them. And the text is pretty much a joke too... F this and F that. Its like a big kiss up to Jesse as a bike god or something and F the rest of you. If you pay full price for this book, you deserve to get beat down by Jesse.
Custom Harley Davidson Eye Candy.......2004-07-20
Don't expect any lessons on how to build a custom Harley Davidson. This book is just pure eye candy. Considering that bike magazines are so expensive this book is worth buying for inspiration. As a 'coffee table book' (whatever that means!), it serves its purpose well, which is why I'm giving it 5 Stars.
I'm not really into custom Harleys (As far as H-Ds are concerned I would prefer a Buell X1 Lightning or Sundance Performance Super XR1200) but I appreciate the effort, skill and craftsmanship that goes into each of his bikes. Jesse James is famous because he's the real deal. He can actually do his own metalwork, shaping sheetmetal into a tank or fender, and does his own welding. His style is a bit on the extreme side of things, yet isn't bizzare or cartoonish, which is probably why he's successful.
I bought this book because I wanted to know ... "Who is this guy?" ... "Why is he so famous"? I've created a couple of special edition automobiles ... but why am I not even half as famous? :) We could all learn a bit about marketing, advertising and promotion from Jesse James. If you want to read about Jesse James himself, buy the Mike Seate book "Jesse James, the man and his machines".
Who is the real Jesse James?.......2004-05-27
I am a big fan of Monster Garage and of Jesse James. I bought this book after reading The Man and His Machines thinking it would provide an insight into who Jesse is and some details about his life and his struggles. The photo's of the bikes are great but I have seen those same photo's over and over again. I expected to see more photo's of Jesse. I also expected it would be a more autobiographical book, not something I needed a magnifying glass to read and finished within the hour. Jesse needs to release a true autobiography. His fans would love it.
What is this thing?.......2004-05-26
I received this book as a gift, which is the only reason it's not in a trash can right now. People are paying $17 for a bunch of recycled photos, only 40 or so of which portray Jesse James, along with a few hundred words of unreadable text? This is the "authorized" biography? Is the man's life so horrible that no one could write about it? Frankly, this book is an insult to Jesse's fans. If you want to read about Jesse, buy "Jesse James: The Man and His Machines," by Mike Seate.
Kindergarten.......2004-05-24
This book's title just scream's "kids book" ... This redneck is a moron and his picture book and last review say it all. Any good book is not read "in about an hour".. if you're looking for a biography.. look elsewhere. I saw this book at the checkout in wallmart (if that tells you anything)... and read it while waiting in line. This picture book was meant for inbreeders and morons and I thought it was a good laugh... don't waste your time.

Book Description
In 2000, the European Union adopted an overall strategy to effect transition to a knowledge economy. After coordinating the preparation of the Lisbon European Summit which launched this ten year strategy, Maria João Rodrigues provides a unique insight into the renewal of European economic and social policies.
European Policies for a Knowledge Economy explores the information society and research and education policies which are being combined to build a stronger knowledge base, and enhance the growth potential of Europe via economic reforms, enterprise and innovation policies. The author ascertains that the European social model should be reformed by investing in people, improving welfare provision and fighting new forms of social exclusion. She goes on to argue that macroeconomic policies will help to advance these structural changes.
The critical issues and underpinning debates that are highlighted include, among others:
reforms targeting the creation of more growth potential
macroeconomic policies which vitalize employment and structural change
policies for the information society aimed at improving standards of living
new priorities for national education policies towards lifelong learning
reforms of the labor markets for more and better jobs
implications of the Lisbon Strategy for the institutional reform of the European Union.
Illustrating the challenges of a new strategic goal for European policies, this highly accessible book will be essential reading for a wide-ranging audience - scholars, public administrators, business people and anyone else with an interest in European policies and their implications for national agendas.

Book Description
This insightful study describes how ten European countries set policy and use financing, planning, and other regulatory mechanisms in implementing expensive medical technology and procedures in their health care systems. The individual country reports presented here are based upon an EEC
workshop at which high technology mechanisms--such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, lithotripsy, and radiotherapy--were analyzed, and which resulted in many recommendations for European countries individually and collectively. The contributors' assessment of European health
technology addresses a broad, general concern about the critical influence of new technology on the cost and effectiveness of health care. The first available work to explore health technology regulation across Europe, and an essential reference for health care professionals, academics, and
administrators.

Book Description
This book examines the health effects of waste deposit sites, incinerators and other options for waste management, focusing in particular on the impacts of halogenated hydrocarbons, and byproducts of incineration. These results are linked with waste policy options, of which reviews in four EU countries and the United States are provided. Scientific arguments which can be used in an environmental health-based waste policy in the future are advocated.
This volume contains the proceedings of a workshop which was organized at the `Hippocrates Foundation' in Kos, Greece, on November 12-14, 1998, as an integral part of the ASPIS project, which aims at raising awareness of environmental health impacts and educating decision-makers. As such, this work addresses a wide, multidisciplinary readership, including environmental decision-makers, medical doctors, environmental experts, postgraduate students, lawyers, engineers, and journalists

Book Description
This timely volume reviews key issues and developments in the controversial area of public sector information (PSI). It addresses the fundamental themes, challenges and conflicts surrounding the access to, and use of, PSI in the new digital era. Using detailed empirical analyses and case studies from across Europe and the USA, the authors focus on the crucial policy, economic, legal and social issues. The public sector is the biggest single producer and holder of information including administrative and government documents, regulatory texts, political data and public registers. The authors demonstrate that this huge store of information is a key resource for a broad range of stakeholders such as citizens, civic organizations, private businesses and public sector agencies. They argue that charging the marginal cost of dissemination, a policy favored in the US, will lead to optimal economic growth in society and will far outweigh the immediate perceived benefits of aggressive cost recovery. They illustrate how open government information policies create significant economic advantages to society and are beneficial in both the short and long term for the general public, the private sector and for governments themselves. This is one of the first books devoted to addressing the new challenges of access to PSI and the role of public policy. The international contributors, including leading experts from Europe and the US, have produced an informative and coherent resource that will be of interest to scholars, students and decision-makers working in the fields of public policy, economics, political science, law and information technology.

Book Description
Important changes are taking place in the landscape of science, technology and industry. Policy makers and managers alike have been forced to develop new ways of thinking and acting to make the best of opportunities offered by technological change. This book discusses these challenges in the European context, drawing on probably the most systematic research into the issues carried out to date. Under the auspices of the European Commission a research consortium of nine research institutes and universities interviewed and surveyed managers in over 250 enterprises across four main sectors in six different regions. This book is the capstone of the investigation presenting the major findings and perspectives. It then goes on to analyse the particular technology management challenges faced in turn by large firms, technology intensive SMEs (`high tech firms'), and technology contingent SMEs. In each case specific policy recommendations are made at regional, national and Community level. Drawing on such detailed empirical work, this important but accessible book offers valuable information and insight to academics, policy makers and managers concerned with the competitiveness and capabilities of European firms and regions.

A book about doers, that made it happen. .......2005-05-25
Skyscraper Dreams
The book Skyscraper Dreams; The Great Real Estate Dynasties of New York by Tom Shachtman covers the dreams and despair of the visionary real estate moguls that built and traded the skyscrapers of New York like Monopoly properties in the board game.
The book visits most big name real estate operators starting with the nineteenth century's John Jacob Astor and the Roosevelts, Beekmans and Rockefellers to the Tishmans, Rudins and Roses who came to this country penniless. Then it moves into the flamboyant developer "Big Bill" Zeckendorph, who they say was the model for Donald Trump. Then there is the master of the real estate universe Harry Helmsley and the Kennedys, Tisches, LeFreks and many others dynasties that made and sometimes lost fortunes in the violent cycles of the New York real estate market.
The concept that hit me the hardest and stayed with me was how Harry Helmsley danced through the decades while building an empire, counting on inflation to make his fortune. He would scoop up properties in tough recessionary markets and count on a turn around that he knew would inevitably come to lift prices and build fortunes. While many of the empire builders in this group stretched and overextended by taking on more projects than could be carried during a slowdown, Harry was slow and steady, over the course of several decades, constantly accumulating income producing properties and running a tight ship, always chipping away at expenses. Many of the names above ran into financial squeezes, even bankruptcy during a real estate slump, often to reinvent themselves, and make remarkable comebacks.
The book gives you a refreshing insight into not only the actions of many real estate icons but the thoughts behind those actions. Sometimes cut thought competitiveness played in pushing architectural limits to add another 100 feet on a building so it's taller than a competitor; other times great compassion played in setting the tone for modern day philanthropy.
It's always a boost to read about an immigrant who came to America on borrowed boat fare and rose through this countries capitalistic society to own some of New Yorks most prized possessions.
I loved the book, it's about doers, people that made it happen!
By Kevin Kingston author of, "A 20,000% Gain in Real Estate"
(...)
Schachtman explains how the Dow Jones bubble will burst........1999-04-20
Never buy a building. That's the rule which allowed penniless refugee families to create the New York skyline over two centuries. People with more money than sense should read Schactman's excellent history of making and keeping family wealth. The obvious message is that land currently not in its "highest and best use" is the fundamental investment vehicle. REIT's are vivid proof that the Wall Street mentality does not comprehend the difference between real and financial assets. We will see a switch from absurd PE's to neglected urban locations .
