Book Description
Traditionally considered the heart of the home, the fireplace (or hearth) has become a metaphor for shelter and security, yet there are few books devoted exclusively to its design. Here is an overview that approaches the subject from both an aesthetic and a practical point of view. Packed with beautiful color illustrations and helpful explanatory captions, it will be an indispensable guide for architects, builders, and homeowners planning to buy a new home or renovate an old one.

Learn the intriguing technique of bead weaving and put your newfound skills to work with these two dozen projects, ranging in design from echoes of Victoriana to Southwestern styles. Using the back stitch, netting, brick stitch, edging, peyote, and split-loom methods, you'll create cabochon necklaces, beaded collars, dangly earrings, amulet bags, and other becoming pieces of jewelry. If you're new to the craft, you may find each chapter's troubleshooting section particularly helpful in determining what might have gone wrong and how to salvage it. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
Not for seed bead starters.......2003-04-09
This is not a starter book even though bead stitch techniques are shown much-enlarged in photographs. Jeanette's book provides an excellent springboard for the intermediate to advanced beader. The projects use seed beads and you will be required to be as competent with thread tension as you are with netting, brick stitch and peyote stitch. Are you bored with too-simple projects? Try some of Jeanette's ideas.
Turning seed beads into jewelry art.......2002-09-29
This is a jewelry making book for those who love to work with seed beads. Each chapter teaches a beading method and then follows with several projects utilizing that method.
The first method is the Back Stitch Technique in which beads are sewn onto a surface into a design, or sewn around the edge of a cabochon (a stone that is rounded and polished on one side, and flat on the other). These designs are then made into necklaces, earrings and pins. Using the Netting Technique, Brick Stitch, and Peyote Stitch, beads are sewn together with needle and thread into lacy designs, or to encase a cabochon, or fringed pouch amulets, or fringed tube-style necklaces. Last is a chapter on using a loom to weave beads into amulets and earrings.
Everything in this book is beautiful and classy, but will appeal to a certain taste. To me they suggest a Native American look. I envision seeing such pieces sold in boutiques at fairly high prices, being that they require closely detailed work and a lot of time.
The instructions are clearly explained and illustrated, and are necessarily very detailed. One needs to be prepared to take the time to follow them closely. However, there is an assumption that you already are familiar with regular jewelry finishing techniques, such as how to end with crimps and clasps. The typical instructions for finishing only say something like: "String a crimping bead....close the crimping bead with crimping pliers and trim off the excess tiger tail" or "use round-nose pliers to make a loop in the head pin. Attach ear wires."
I think this is an excellent book for those with patience and a taste for this kind of look.
Very Disappointed.......2001-08-13
I was extremely disappointed with this book. I was expecting patterns that were more up to date with the times and jewelry that I could wear to work and out to dinner. These patterns weren't difficult to understand but like I said, who would want to wear it out of the house. Possibly little children would wear while playing house or something. Extremely disappointed. Don't waste your money.
A beading banquet........2001-06-14
I'm on my third copy of this book. I've worn one out, loaned one to my daughter and, in order to keep one in hand, am ordering a back-up copy. Basic techniques, simple projects, excellent illustrations and step-by-step instructions in netting, peyote, loom and split loom, and techniques for beading around and incorporating cabouchons into the work are all here. Best of all, every project leads into innovation and creativity for the reader. For me, he simple peyote project has evolved into true life colored butterflies in beads. I heartily recommend this book to beginners and those who know the basics but want to jump ahead into creating their own designs.
A great book.......2000-07-21
As a former student of Mrs. Shanigan's (she teaches a jewelry class at the high school), I found this book very well demonstrated, and easy to follow. A must have!

Do you know your dewbacks from your banthas? Could you tell the difference between a stormtrooper, a scouttrooper, and a snowtrooper? Could you pick a Rodian out of a lineup? The Complete Star Wars Trilogy Scrapbook can help you acquire this vital information. Illustrations and over a hundred photographs from the original trilogy help you put names to faces--so you'll know that Salacious Crumb is the name of that tiny, cackling animal at Jabba's court. Though the book contains an abridged version of the events covered in the Star Wars trilogy, readers should be advised to see the films first as the book discloses crucial secrets best left to the film to reveal. The book is aimed at younger readers--but SW fans of all ages will enjoy this photo-filled volume. --C.B. Delaney

Easy reading for a young star wars fan but.........2007-04-11
My 7 year old son is a Star Wars fan, I bought this book for his reading practice taking advantage of one of his favorite movies and the continuos interest of knowing about movie facts. I rated three stars because the print out has a lack of quality which makes reading a little bit difficult because of gray letters over a black background. Besides this small drawback he enjoyed very much. My recommendations is to look forward similar scrapbooks with a clearer reading.
Small book BIG memories! A real Star Wars scrapbook.......2005-08-12
Ok yes it has great pictures. Yes it covers Episodes IV, V, and VI. Glossy pictures (some I haven't seen anywhere else) and nice tidbits of background lore. It even alludes to Episodes I, II, and III. It says ages 9-12 but I even liked it (ok 44 year old Sci-fi fan). A real bargain for the price and a nice summary of the Trilogy. I would put it up there with the Star Wars Visual Dictionaries for the pictures. For the price you can check it out but I bet you will be glad you did. As always I love Amazon's packing. My stuff always arrives in great shape - they care. It really is a cool little book. As a gift I think any Star Wars fan would really enjoy it (no matter their age). Peace on.
Very Good!.......2002-03-22
I loved this book very much, and I was surprised how much information it gives you. I love Mark Cotta Vaz and I read his decription books. The book is exellent exept for one thing, it is not very detailed. It has the best pictures from the Star Wars Special Edition and it covers everything. I would definatly recommend this book.
Pretty Good.......1998-04-24
This book is a great starter book for the ameture Star Wars fan. It has great detailed pictures and gives a good amount of info of different things that exist in the Star Wars universe. If you want a lot on info (instead of pictures) get The Guide to the Star Wars Universe. I'd rate it 9.9 it's not perfect but it's about as close as you can get! Still if you want picture, get this book.
I agree with JakeH.......1997-04-27
I very much agree with JakeH. He is actually the one who got me the book as a birthday gift. It has photos and fairly detailed discriptions

The definitive version is yet to come..........2003-12-31
Being a big fan of Ray Harryhausen, I bought this book back in the late 70's for $17.50 (a tidy sum at the time). Nothing else was available on Harryhausen, and the book was much appreciated. However, its pictures are mostly black and white, and there is not much to read or revealed by Harryhausen, who was still making films at the time.
Be aware: there are three different editions of the book, the last covers all Ray's films.
In April, "An Animated Life" will be released, with full color and lots of text. But if you see this in a used book store and it's not too expensive, pick it up. Even now it's considered a collector's item.
Ray Harryhausen is king of F/x!!!!!!!.......1998-02-06
Mr. Harryhausen, Thank you so much for a lifetime devoted to amazing special effects films. You are truly the MASTER of stop motion and I'm very happy that you've given us, your fans, this book.As a 34 year old male, I grew up watching your films on TV and to this day I am still amazed when Sinbad battles the Cyclops or Jason fights the skelletons or Talos the bronze giant comes to life. You have inspired me to take up film making and stop motion as a hobby and I'm hooked. In your films, your magic will live on long after Zeus has called you home and your legend will grow like one of the great greek mythologies.Thank you. Joe Allen

Great book!.......2005-09-30
Only few words to say that this book was very useful to let me introduce a clear project portfolio framework in the enterprise in which I work (bank, IT department).
"Concrete", "Best practices" are the most "plus" of this book.
A very good book!
From Business Stratey to IT Action.......2004-04-10
Drawing from a wealth of success in balancing business requirements with IT solutions, the authors of "From Business Strategy to IT Action" have identified the elements required to keep IT budgets in-line with the overall goals of the business. As many IT managers know it is easy to get caught up in the swirl surrounding keeping the "lights on" and lose focus about using technology to bring value to the organization in ways that help achieve the goals necessary to move the organization forward. I particularly liked the chapter devoted to discussing the culture of an organization. As they point out, losing sight of the bottom-line is easy when organizations get hung up on the culture of the institution and continue to do things the old way rather than routinely evaluating the goals of the organization with an eye toward improvement. To quote them, "New Information Economics (NIE) is a set of practices and principles for moving from business strategy to IT action to bottom-line impact". To me this means staying focused on the business of the organization and not getting caught up in thinking that IT is in business for itself.
Bottom Line --> Results.......2004-03-17
This book provides solid, rational, and most importantly, actionable guidance for managers and executives faced with the challenge of identifying, evaluating, and prioritizing their IT spend. The authors provide a concise, structured framework which leads the reader through a step-by-step process to make reasoned decisions about both steady state ("lights on") expenditures and new project investments. The writing style is clear, fluid, and easily digestible. Each chapter includes fact-filled charts and diagrams to make the concepts come alive, along with a chapter summary, targeted questions, plus additional reading references. From defining goals, asking the penetrating "right questions," through charting a path to implementation, this truly is a guidebook to learning how to control spending while concurrently maximizing the impact on your bottom line. This book should be required reading before the beginning of your next planning cycle. Whether you've been in the IT business for a year, a decade or longer, you will undoubtedly benefit from the multiple layers of insight contained within this book. Note: I also recommend sales personnel absorb the concepts in this book -- if you understand how your customers are evaluating IT investment decisions, you can communicate the value your offerings will deliver in a manner which will better resonate with the decision maker.
One of the best books on the subject!.......2004-03-17
I've read a stack of books related to this subject, and this is one of two books that I think hit the bullseye and that I recommend to peers and clients (the other is Value-Driven IT Management, ISBN 0750659254).
What I most like about this book is the highly focused, clearly defined approach to transforming strategy into action. In fact, 'action' is the main characteristic of this book, both in writing pace and in the results you can achieve if you follow the map the authors provide. Chapter 1 leads you through defining your goals that links the strategy to your bottom line. This establishes the methodology that you'll follow through the rest of the book.
Each subsequent chapter is a milestone in the process of transforming strategy into action. What I like is the consistent format, which starts with "Ask the Right Questions", then listing steps, ending with a summary. More importantly, the bottom line remains the focus of this book from start to finish. This keeps the reader's attention on the goals, business issues and costs.
The topics covered in each step represent best practices that should be present in any organization that is mature enough to undertake a business-IT alignment. For example, portfolio management, prioritization techniques, and aligning to a value chain are addressed, In addition, the challenges faced by both business and IT are uncovered, with advice on how to meet them during the process. Finally, the book sets forth the transformation process in a well ordered sequence that will get you from inception to meeting all objectives if followed. The chapters on scoring and measurement are invaluable.
One topic that makes this book exceptionally valuable is the introduction of the Business Value Maturity Model™. This model, in my opinion, is the missing link in the quest for Business-IT alignment initiatives, and one that I hope gets wider dissemination than in this book. Other aspects of the book that I especially like include the excellent use of graphs and diagrams, and the absence of empty claims and theory. The material is clear, actionable and realistic. Think of this book as both a compass and blueprint. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough, particularly to organizations that are struggling with business-IT alignment.

A learning consultant from Buckinghamshire, U.K........2000-06-25
As a facilitator of client account management programmes that include a range of learning modules, I found "How to Win Customers in the Digital World" a significantly useful book. The majority of the discussed techniques are familiar; however, the real value of the book is the way that those techniques are made accessible to the user. The majority of books of this nature never take theory through to practical use ... but this book certainly does. Real, understandable, accessible customer situations are worked through in a a manner that the reader can absorb and apply for their own organisation.
Understanding the must do's in digital business.......2000-04-13
I don't write a lot of book reviews, not because I don't read a lot of books but because so few of them are worth reviewing. This week I'm going to make an exception since this is a very good book. The book is called "How to Win Customers in the Digital World", subtitled "Total Action or Fatal Inaction". The title and subtitle have been flipped since I saw the book in draft form a year or so ago. The authors are Al Dunn and his partner Peter Vervest. Al is based in London, and has spent most of his working life advising European telecommunications suppliers and carriers as well as other apparently slow-moving organisations on how to improve their customer service. As you can imagine, this is a difficult and thankless task. But he and Peter Vervest, plug away, spending a lot of time with companies like Finland's Nokia and Dutch and German and Swiss PTTs on change management and customer relations. (PTT is a peculiarly European acronym for "Post, Telephone and Telegraph", which indicates the term's long history. Despite being overtaken by technology and other events, it is still used to describe the major European telecommunications companies, many of which are still government owned or which behave as if they are). Al has been talking about the importance of the customer ever since I have known him, which is the best part of twenty years. Just about every organisation says that its customers are important, but a surprisingly small amount actually believe it, and even fewer adopt a customer focus as the cornerstone of their business philosophy. Common sense tells us that the customer is paramount, because they are after all the people who buy our products. But it is not just the computer industry that very often pays more attention to its products than to the people who buy them. We see it everywhere in business, and in life, and suppliers have to be constantly reminded that they are in business only because people want what they sell, are prepared to pay for it, and are happy to remain loyal if the service is good enough. This has always been true, and it always will be true. But now, with the growth of the Internet and electronic commerce, business practices are changing very quickly, and the nature of the relationship between supplier and customer is evolving accordingly. In the digital world the skills involved in attracting and retaining customers are different enough to warrant comment, hence the book. The authors make a major distinction between "total action" - which is roughly defined as "squeezing out" every activity that is not specifically important to the customer - and "fatal inaction" - intense activities that have no relationship to an organisation's performance with that customer. "These departments develop around themselves highly complex and rigid processes and systems. In due course they begin to perceive themselves as businesses in their own right, an error today's `business unit focus simply magnifies. "Such organisations often become dysfunctional. Their people, usually intelligent and competent, have become trapped in corporate autism, a serious handicap inherited from task-oriented production-line forbears. They become inward-facing internal markets for themselves, with rules and behavioural standards that are far too rigid for the digital business world." Sound familiar? The object becomes the process itself, rather than the end result of that process. Now, the Internet has vastly altered these processes and their capabilities for redefining customer interaction. "Digital technology, as best exemplified by the Internet, allows us to easily bring together vast amounts of related information. This information can be located anywhere in the world, but it can be presented with amazing clarity and relevance to provide links to all the sources from which the information has come. This fundamentally changes business. "This gives the customer the ability to transparently look into an organisation's operations, and make decisions with much more information and much more quickly than was previously the case. This, and the vastly improved access of the Internet, makes it much easier for customers to change their supplier. And that is death in the digital age." I recommend this book to you. "How to Win Customers in the Digital World" will remind you of the most important people in your life and how to deal with them
Review from a consultant in this business.......2000-04-03
This book has been written as a management book; the book is about a concept that has been worked out quite thouroughly and is illustrated by a number of good examples. Because i was quite familiar with the concepts, i could easily understand the content of this book; however i think that managers who are not too familiar with concepts like this will feel it hard to really use the material in their real life practice. They will probably understand that they have to start moving, but will have to read the examples probably twice to really understand the steps to undertake. The book gives good insight in the global steps to undertake, but could have been worked out in more detail to really deliver a management agenda.
Overall i am quite satisfied with this book and would recommend this book to others, especially managers in brick and mortar companies.

Yup, a must read..........2005-11-23
I am currently taking a course in Information Management and this book was recommended. I waited about a month for the book and was very frustrated. I have only just began to read this book and I can say that it was definitely worth the wait. The book is written in such clear and easy to understand language that it would make you look forward to the next time you open it. There wasn't a topic in my course that I was not able to find here. Apart from the fact that I got this book just two days before an exam, I have no complaints... lol
A must read!.......2000-05-01

Book Description
The person who runs the company sees IS as being the provider of solutions. "Dont tell me about function point productivity. What we want is faster turnaround time for systems and were not getting it!" The person who runs the IS division recognizes that it has a strategic role. "The management is locked into a 1980s timewarp how do I persuade them that IS has more to offer than in the past?" The aim of the book is to step into the middle ground. It emphasizes the important role an IS manager plays in the development of the company strategy. It will show how the everyday problems need to be seen in a fresh perspective that of balancing the competing pressures of business and technology. Get too far from the technology and too close to the business, and technology will pull you back. Get focused on technology and lose sight of the business, and the business will make sure you know about it. The goal of this book is to provide IS managers with balanced information to guide them. Why does it matter? Because, in many ways, the future of our organizations is in the hands of todays IS managers. Management Challenges in IS will help them make wise and thoughtful choices.

Customer Reviews:
A Very Useful Book!.......2001-06-17
I first found this book thru my local library. It has helped so much that I decided to purchase a copy. This book contains excellent information for both Landlords and Tenants in Pennsylvania. Almost everything I needed to know when rewriting a lease was contained in its pages, including forms and letters! I also like that there is information on the Landlord Tenant Act, and that this info is much more detailed than I've seen in other books. I would recomend this book to anyone who rents from others, anyone looking to get into the rental business, beginning landlords and experienced landlords. A Must Have!!!
