5 out of 5 stars The beautiful Stately Homes and Castles of Europe.......2005-05-01

Since 1968 Marcus Binney and photographer Alex Starkey have been producing regular articles on the country houses and places and stately homes of Europe and the UK for Country Life magazine. This book describes the challenges of photographing these houses, both in Black and White and colour. Photos that you take for granted have a lot more art and skill involved in producing them than is readily apparent - especially if you haven't tried to take these sort of photos yourself. ( I have, and they never look as good as what you see in this book)

This is a wonderful book and covers 25 houses. The photos are a mixture of black and white and colour. All pictures are beautiful and sharp and printed on high quality glossy art paper. The houses range from Castello di Guarene in Piedmont, Palazzo Albrizzi in Venice, Schloss Bruhl in Cologne, Chateau de Bussy-Rabutin in Burgundy, Hotel de Lauzun in Paris and Skoloster in Sweden as just an example of a few.

Some of the houses/castles covered in this book only have a few photos, while others are up to 4 or 5 pages long. Sometimes you wish for colour pictures, but not all these photos were originally taken with colour film, and even when printed in black and white all these pictures are of excellent quality. The text for each house gives you some of the background history of it, but unfortunately doesn't tell you if the house is open to the public today - or even still intact with its contents (some of these photos are decades old)

Country Life magazine today continues its regular articles on the Country Houses of both the UK and Europe, and it is lovely to see the best of their archives being printed in these books. The great Country Houses of Europe are one of the great wonders of the world and usually represent some to the best of preserved artistic endeavour over the centuries if you take your time to search them out. This book stands out from the crowd for the unusual range of houses covered and as a snapshot of some of the more outstanding examples.

5 out of 5 stars A superb memento to lost beauty - and ugliness..........2003-07-08

In `Brideshead Revisited` Charles Ryder worries about the triumph of `Hooper`, the epitome of all that's mediocre and commonplace, over history, tradition and style. His thoughts are visualised to perfection in a deeply depressing photograph in this book, showing a brand-new street of featureless, drab modern 'cottages' perched literally on the doorstep of dilapidated Beaupre Hall, that is about to be torn down altogether. If you have any feeling at all for English country house traditions and architecture, this book will make your heart ache for all the beauty that was burnt, mutilated, abandoned and left to decay, or, most often and worst of all, deliberately demolished - at a staggering rate of one house a week during parts of the fifties. (Some offering fierce resistance though, like the domed core of magnificent Nuthall Temple, that defied all attempts at demolition and was left to itself for decades, until finally a big load of dynamite blew it away so that the M1 motorway could run its course; Nuthall's foundations remain buried underneath it).
Well, as you can see it would be very easy to write a soppy, sentimental book about the subject - but fortunately Giles Worsley sticks to an eminently sober, scholarly (but lively!) approach. He notes that we lament the loss of 1 in 6 country houses during the 20th century, but that we might rather wonder at the fact that in a century of such huge political, economical and social changes, 5 in 6 survived! Also, he stresses that the downsizing of huge piles into something more convenient or fashionable is not a 20th century invention, but is of all ages. And who could blame the latter-day nobleman for not wanting to maintain a draughty, 150-bedroom Victorian colossus? (the Duchess of Westminster apparently once said that she thought of Eaton Hall as a town rather than a house - and a stay in the immense, British-designed Lalgarh Palace (now hotel) in Bikaner, India, has certainly taught me that Victorian buildings of that size are hardly fit for human occupation!). In fact, the 20th century is exceptional only because it was the first century to produce legislation AGAINST such activities. And finally, not all that was lost was of great historical or architectural importance - much of it was in fact second-rate, plain or downright ugly.
Country Life liberally documented the good, the bad and the ugly (at times snubbing the ugly with elegant irony, some amusing examples of which are cited; at other times providing invaluable visual documentation to inspire later reconstructions), and the breathtaking photographs in this book seem to offer a fairly representative cross-section of all that was destroyed or downsized. The quality of the (black and white) pictures is exquisite. They show a wealth of architectural and interior detail, but many of them are also highly atmospheric, mysterious and haunting. The accompanying text is concise, instructive and always interesting (though inevitably a somewhat depressing recital of fires and bankruptcies). I was surprised, by the way, that the book contains no pictures at all of the process of destruction itself; also, for some houses that were dramatically reduced, I would have been interested to see a `before-and-after' comparison. But these are just minor quibbles. This is a magnificent book, beautifully produced on heavy, glossy paper, and is a definite must-have for anyone even remotely interested in this subject!

Anybody can enjoy experimenting with abstract art. It doesn't matter if you have never been able to master perspective, or take a decent portrait - or even if you have never thought of yourself as "artistic" at all. Ronald Pearsall's lively text, drawing on his own experience and illustrations as well as those of the great names in abstract art, encourages you to jump in at the deep end and enjoy creating pictures for yourself.

So what exactly is abstract painting? It is a convenient term for nonrepresentional art, which may be inspired either by themes in the outside world (whether intangible concepts or concrete objects) and contain references to these themes, or by nothing more than an interesting pattern of shapes and colours. Why do people paint abstracts? Because they like doing it; because it suits their temperament. An abstract work can be spontaneous, an explosion of energy, or meticulously worked out and executed. It is up to you - there are no rules unless you choose to make them.

All that is needed are a few basic materials and the willingness to have a go - PAINTING ABSTRACT PICTURES will encourage you to try out colours and combinations, play with shapes, experiment with opils, watercolour, pastels and acrylics, and turn doodles into works of art.

Lavishly illustrated with photographs!!!!!

Having the lovely and intimate volume Gerhard Richter: 100 Pictures in your hands is like being transported to the renowned painter's exhibition at the Carré d'Art in Nîmes. The beautifully produced book presents paintings from 1995 to 1996, an incredibly prolific time for Richter. The luscious images range from colorful abstractions with scraped and textured paint to his signature realist paintings based on photographs. A charming essay by Guy Tosatto offers a poetic explanation of Richter's work. The telling of a conversation between a mother and her whip-smart son mimics the series of mother and child paintings. Tosatto's characters discuss the nature of painting and illusion, while the portraits of Richter's wife and young child emerge in various degrees of clarity. The domestic theme continues with a number of flower paintings, including two almost identical paintings of yellow tulips, one blurry and one almost in focus, and a portrait of soft pink flowers with broken stems. --J.P. Cohen

Book Description

Concerned with the relationship between painting and the technologically mediated image of photography, Gerhard Richter is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest living artists. With a brush that deftly and romantically captures abstract details and blurred newspaper images alike, he has transformed our understanding of art in the age of photographic reproduction and mass-media imagery. 100 Pictures is a faithful reprint of the intimate, cloth-bound book Richter created in 1996 as a nontraditional anthology of his oeuvre. Following a short introduction to his early work, which features pictures long kept in his studio, 100 Pictures presents Richter's output from an intensive period of work between 1995-96. Though this period mainly saw the production of abstract works, it also begat a cycle of eight small-format paintings of an intimate, private nature, which portray his young wife Sabine as a Madonna-and-child. 100 Pictures is an extraordinary document of contemporary art, finally back in print.

5 out of 5 stars My First Gerhard Richter Book..........2006-01-22

I have been a Gerhard Richter book collector and art dealer for years now. Surprisingly enough, this was the 1st Gerhard Richter book I purchased and I have had a special place in my heart for it ever since. This little Gerhard Richter book is, for the money, well worth purchasing. In the under $50 range, this is one of the best Richter books on the market.

5 out of 5 stars 100 color photos, concentrating on works of 1995-96.......1998-01-27

this is a summary of richter's recent oil paintings, with two critical essays. Although a few pre '90s paintings are shown (e.g. zwie grau, schaedel, some abstractes bild), most of the book covers the abstracted bilds and photo-paintings of 95-96. The 'realistic' works include several landscapes, lesende, works with flowers and the most excellent S. mit kind series. Also a rare self-portrait (836-10, 1996). Essays are 'the woman the child and the painting' by guy tosatto, and 'there is no there. gerhard richter at the carre d'Art in Nimes,' by Birgit Pelzer. printing is nice. we read that the artist was involved in the production of this very good buy.

Martine Franck: One Day to the Next includes more than one hundred startling images that capture singular visual moments with memorable elegance and wit. Presented here is a selection of this highly regarded photographer's favorite images from the last thirty years, covering subject matter from the boundless inquisitiveness of childhood to the quirks of old age, from strange and rugged landscapes to the rhythms of crowds. Whether photographing artists and writers such as Michel Foucault and Marc Chagall, or Tibetan Buddhist refugees in India and Nepal, Franck sees photography as "a frontier, a barrier of sorts that one is constantly breaking down so as to get closer to the subject."

Unlike her husband, Henri Cartier-Bresson and many other members of the Magnum photo agency noted for their photography books, this book shows nothing out of the ordinary.
