Book Description

In the Aoyama district of Tokyo, a mixed-use neighborhood of low-rise buildings where not a square meter of land has been left unoccupied, the Swiss architecture team of Herzog & de Meuron has built a new store for Prada. In this chunky, silvery book, they meticulously illustrate the creative process that led to the realization of "a house and a plaza," a tall and narrow kaleidoscope-like structure that houses a two-story retail space and multiple levels of offices, backed by an outdoor space for the public--a rarity in crowded Tokyo. The finished structure, encased in a visually porous shell or skin, is as decorative as it is architectural--or as architectural as it is decorative--and is both metaphorically and literally linked to its surrounding environment, and to the idea of the garment. Here is the story of a theoretically and structurally complex building told lovingly and simply by its architects, through words, models, sketches, photographs, and architectural renderings.

4 out of 5 stars New Book.......2006-07-30

I am generally happy about the book, except when I am buying a 100 dollars book I will expect more from it, in particular in this situation, the back of book has a lot of scratches... certainly it won't affect the content whatsoever, but this is a book designed and made to be pure white with shinny silver pattern. That is the only drawback.

    Book Description

"Splendid monograph, the first of major proportions in nearly thirty years….ever thoughtful, opening the door to Friedrich's world that much wider."—Chicago Tribune

Werner Hofmann vividly demonstrates Caspar David Friedrich's extraordinary ability to reproduce the natural world in faithful detail, while at the same time imbuing it with spiritual and religious significance. Caught between the near and the distant, the finite and the infinite, his human figures find a space in which to engage in the thoughtful contemplation of nature and the divine.

Carefully placing the artist in a wider context, Hofmann examines contemporary judgments and influences on Friedrich's work. The beautiful illustrations include many of Friedrich's drawings and watercolors as well as over ninety of his works in oils. 193 illustrations, 150 in color.

5 out of 5 stars I agree with "A reader": This book is sublime........2006-06-17

This should be considered indispensable to anyone interested in this artist, Romanticism, or landscape painting in general. As well as offering a carefully considered account of the artist's life and work, the text is careful to separate the myths that have grown around some of these paintings, carefully placing the artist within the context of his own time and covering the manner in which these images have been misappropriated up to the present day.

Above all, this is the most thorough and best-reproduced representation of this artist's work I have seen to date, containing not only every single painting I have seen from other studies of the artist, but also several I encountered here for the first time. I doubt this will be equalled (let alone surpassed) for many years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2001-04-24

Werner Hofmann's new monograph on Caspar David Friedrich benefits from superb colour reproductions as well as Hofmann's own discursive brilliance.

Selections from Friedrich's letters are a neat fit, bowing to the idea that his transcendental painting ultimately eludes scholarly discourse.

This book lands with authority, passion, and a keen sense of the vistas of silence that Friedrich communicates to admirers everywhere.

A bargain. Snap it up if you come across it...

      Book Description

An inspired yet haunted genius, Caspar David Friedrich captures the solitude of man, powerless in the mystery and bleakness of nature. Find out how this great 19th-century Romantic painter created works of intense beauty in the face of personal tragedy. The DK ArtBook series presents both the life and works of each artist within the cultural, social, and political context of their time. To make the books easy to consult, they are divided into three areas -- the life and works of the artist, historical and cultural background, and analysis of major works -- which are identifiable by side bands. Each spread focuses on a specific theme, with an introductory text and several annotated illustrations. Few art history texts contain such abundance of full-color illustrations. The index section is also illustrated and gives background information on key figures and the location of the artist's works.

It is a real pity that this book is out of print. I have a copy(that I bought on sale)and had hoped to get another as a present for a friend. The text is very informative and well written and arranged. The paintings are well printed both as to detail and colors and presentation on the pages. I have perused mine many times and loaned it to my watercolor instructor who was as taken with it as I am. If you can find a copy of this in a bookstore and are interested in watercolors, snap it up. You will be pleased many times over to have it in your collection.

          Book Description

Ray Lambert's exhaustive study of John Constable's landscapes and relevant writings reveal Constable's high level of engagement with ideas on art and aesthetics and the decisive consequences for his style of painting. Constable's texts clearly predict his views. They also give an indication of the artist's knowledge of scientific, poetic, and aesthetic ideas that were relevant to the creation of a serious landscape art as well as a theory of landscape.

              Book Description

Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869)--court physician to the king of Saxony--was a naturalist, amateur painter, and theoretician of landscape painting whose Nine Letters on Landscape Painting is an important document of early German romanticism and an elegant appeal for the integration of art and
              science.
Carus was inspired by and had contacts with the greatest German intellectuals of his day. Carus prefaced his work with a letter from his correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was his primary mentor in both science and art. His writings also reflect, however, the influence of the German
natural philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, especially Schelling's notion of a world soul, and the writings of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Carus played a role in the revolution in landscape painting taking place in Saxony around Caspar David Friedrich. The first
edition appears here in English for the first time.

Be aware that this is not a book on classic Romanticism. It has adequate instructions for painting sentimental gardens, cute fuzzy bunnies, and old fashion grist mills. It would be a good introduction to simple landscape art for a beginning decorative student, but falls short of offering assistance to the intermediate or advanced artist.

If you're new to black-and-white comic art, this is a good book to find out which mainstream cartoonists tickle your funny bones and which don't. But be forewarned: despite the title, these are by no means the 100 best comics of the century (and, by most people's definitions, they're not even comics, but magazine and newspaper cartoons). Nonetheless, it's worth getting as a sampler for further exploration.

                      Book Description

The evaluation of information systems in developing countries has gained considerable interest among academics, consultants and practitioners. Despite this emerging interest, there is not much helpful literature on the evaluation of information systems in developing countries, and the many issues and criteria that should be carefully evaluated. Most existing literature attempts to use the experience of IT evaluation in developed nations to apply to the case of IT evaluation in developing nations.

IT Investment in Developing Countries: An Assessment and Practical Guideline offers an original approach to the assessment of the effectiveness of IT investment in developing countries. While others might have attempted to examine the possibility of quantifying IT investment expenditures and the problem of measuring the intangible benefits of IT, they have not addressed the total evaluation of IT in developing countries. However, this book offers standards for developing a process to evaluate the effectiveness of IT that will make a useful contribution for managers in their attempts to quantify new technology purchases in developing nations.
