5 out of 5 stars AUTHORITY, MAGNIFICENCE, AND CHARM -- ALL IN ONE EXTRAORDINARY VOLUME.......2007-03-21

This book is an absolutely astonishing achievement, and is most highly placed among my favorite books of any genre. Most readers will find this to be the finest book on the many historic buildings of the French Quarter, and for many reasons. First, the writing is superbly clear. One need not be an architectural engineer to understand the many fine points covered; believe me, with Mr. Vogt's writing, even we amateurs pick it up easily. One also need not be an historian to comprehend the intricate and detailed timelines involved; these are seamlessly integrated into the writing so that one learns the history naturally, as a matter of course, and a great many historical characters come vividly to life for our reading pleasure. Yes, the buildings described of are built of brick and plaster and colombage and other stuff, but to Mr. Vogt, they are also built from a heady infusion of cultures from many continents converging on a place called New Orleans to create an spicy mix of styles and traditions. In other words, to Mr. Vogt these glorious buildings, some now more than two centuries old, are not inanimate objects, but very, very much alive. Second, the outstanding pen and ink drawings are invitingly warm, showing these appealing buildings in a classic way that blends remarkably well with the written text. I've often found myself pleasantly studying one of the drawings (or perhaps just daydreaming) for several minutes at a time before resuming my reading. When first flipping through the pages of the book, one might be inclined to say that line drawings usually look pretty similar, but I would suggest there is considerable variety in Mr. Vogt's work. Artists should find his approach particularly interesting, with some subjects shown at night rather than in bright daylight, others after a rain, and so on. Take a closer look, and appreciate the artistry unique to each and every drawing.

I have now read this book several times (something I never expected to do when I first bought it), and each time find myself so deeply immersed in pictures and words it's as though I'm living altogether in another time and place. The book is that coherent, that illuminating, that much of a pleasure to enjoy. For anyone who thinks they might even be slightly interested in this subject, this is likely just the volume for you.

Mr. Vogt focused his work on the greatest American city of New Orleans, and that was surely enough to keep him happy for a lifetime. Would that he had had more time to complement this work with another on the early architecture of, for instance, whatever might remain in Biloxi, Martinique, Haiti, Cuba, and other antecedents and contemporaries of New Orleans as it was growing up. In the present volume, he gave us just enough to tease us. Perhaps a bright, enterprising scholar of architecture will be able to follow up some day; that would surely honor Mr. Vogt's lifetime achievements.

"Historic Buildings of the French Quarter" is highly recommended without the slightest hesitation to anyone who enjoys a truly fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent, excellent..........2003-11-14

This book, as other reviewers have said, is about the architecture of the Quarter and the history that drove its trends and changes. It is an excellent book if you are interested in architectural details and some floor plans in historic buildings of the Quarter as well as typical buildings that would have been built there. If you want to learn about types of buildings in the Quarter, why the Quarter developed as it did and see line drawings of specific historic buildings, then this is your book.

If you want a glitzty photo book showing interior design of said buildings, this is NOT the book for you (thank God, like we need more of that!).

It is my hope that Lloyd Vogt branches out and produces a similar book in other areas with a distinct architectural heritage as it appears to me that most books that address this topic are of the interior design eye-candy type.

5 out of 5 stars Blends history with architectural insights.......2003-02-10

The New Orleans' historic French Quarter was founded in 1718 by the French, moved to Spanish control, and was home to generations of occupants who built grand ballrooms, courtyards, and Spanish structures. Historic Buildings Of The French Quarter uses black and white line drawings to blend history with architectural insights, illustrating building types and styles of different eras and profiling some sixty representative buildings. Students of either regional history or architectural history will find it revealing.

5 out of 5 stars Another classic work from the master on N.O. architecture.......2002-11-20

Founded by the French, developed by the Spanish and the West Indian Creoles, finally acquired by the United States, le Vieux Carre, the French Quarter, is sixty-six square blocks of solid history spread over nearly three centuries. Despite several desvastating fires, a surprising amount of early architectural history remains, and this lush volume of pen-and-ink drawings of buildings and floorplans is notable as both history and art. An introductory section describes the sources and development of vernacular architecture in south Louisiana, the roles of wrought iron, brackets on shotgun houses, and the courtyard plan, and the influence of each succeeding cultural overlay. Then, arranged into chronological chapters, Vogt describes in some detail more than forty structures and locations, both public, like Jackson Square (originally la Place d'Armes) and the U.S. Mint (erected in 1838 on the site of Fort San Carlos), to private dwellings, including the Peyroux House (built c.1780), the Bosque House (1795), and the La Rionda-Correjolles House (c.1810)-- with a full discussion of generic building types and styles for each period. How many visitors to the Quarter are aware that Pat O'Brien?s inhabits what was once the townhouse of planter John Garner, or that Preservation Hall was the home of Madame Fanchon, a free woman of color, from 1817 to 1866, or that the Le Carpentier House on Chartres was not only the home of novelist Frances Parkinson Keyes and the birthplace of Paul Morphy but also the site of a series of murders by the Italian "Black Hand"? A glossary and selected bibliography will also be useful to the student, though an index would have been very handy as well. The author is well known among students of New Orleans architecture; his _New Orleans Houses: A House-Watcher's Guide_, now in its fifth printing, has become the standard reference.

    Book Description

High ground adjacent to the Mississippi River, New Orleans was strategically positioned so as to be a gateway for commerce, providing world-wide transportation through the Gulf of Mexico. As a testament to its deliberate geographical placement, the New Orleans French Quarter has survived natural disasters for hundreds of years. In Buddy Stall's French Quarter Montage, Buddy Stall takes the reader back to the inception of this historic district, explaining the reason for the location and describing John Law's involvement in this high-stakes real estate deal. Some of the more memorable French Quarter denizens have ranged from politicians and capitalists to religious leaders and artists. One such notable is Antoine Peychaud, a local pharmacist credited with mixing the first cocktail. Another is William Ratcliffe Irby, a colorful philanthropist who restored many historic buildings in the 1920s. Pére Antoine, pastor of the Saint Louis Cathedral in the late 1700s, was the most beloved and respected of all those who served in that position. Arriving in 1821, John James Audubon, world-famous ornithological artist, had studios in the French Quarter and found the Mississippi River delta to be a fertile backdrop for his work. New Orleans architecture is internationally known for its old-world styling. The U.S. Custom House, U.S. Mint, Vitascope Hall, and 919 Royal Street all are historic buildings of note in the French Quarter. Mardi Gras and its significance to the French Quarter, Jackson Square, the church and its leaders and educators all are a part of the montage. If we listen carefully to the voices of our ancestors, we will be able to both hear and see the past. Stall has provided us all a way to get to know them in this book.

This is a beautiful book and all the more important in the light of recent events. The copy is repetitive and dry but the pictures are lovely. I would have appreciated more info on the architecture and history of the times these homes were built.

                  Book Description

Frank Marshall Davis was a prominent poet, journalist, jazz critic, and civil rights activist on the Chicago and Atlanta scene from the 1920s through the 1940s. He was an intimate of Langston Hughes and Richard Wright and an influential editor at the Chicago Evening Bulletin, the Chicago Whip, the Chicago Star, and the Atlanta World. He renounced his writing career in 1948 and moved to Hawaii, forgotten until the Black Arts Movement rediscovered him in the 1960s.

I purchased this book as part of my research during escrow on a lot where we plan to build a vacation/retirement home. Even though we would likely not serve as general contractor the information inside is invaluable. It has helped me to understand the right questions to ask during escrow (from surveyors to septic to view to laterals) to ensure the lot, county and sub-division will allow the home we envision. The chapters on foundation, windows, doors, etc are all extremely helpful when it gets down to desiging the home. I'll know what to look out for with the interior and exterior design, drainage and when dealing with the builder.

I skimmed most of the book in about an hour and came away with two pages of notes which will undoubtably be greatly extended when I sit down and read in detail. There's so much great information that it really takes two passes.

That said, the illustrations are a bit primitive and I found some of them hard to understand. Also, an update to include smart home/home theater considerations would be a welcome addition. For those iterested, I've found some of the "XYZ for Dummys" books to fill that gap.

                      Recommended.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-02-28

Covering all of the main topics, this book on homebuilding is a must have for any person intent on building his or her dream home. I keep it with me all of the time for easy referral.

                      3 out of 5 stars Voice of experience--good advice.......2002-07-05

The best part of this book is its easygoing style. Written seemingly entirely from memory, you'll understand and remember every word. The author skips the commonly available info and writes about the crucial nuts-and-bolts problems of building a house: what do you do if you've drilled a hundred foot well and come up dry? (Keep drilling.) His advice on some details, vapor barriers for example, is OK but you'll want to check the latest thinking on the topic too. Some harmless misinformation is passed along, like that Palladio, eponym for those short-tall-short windows, "invented" them. (He may have invented residential architecture, but those windows date to antiquity. In his day they were known as serliana, after the architect Sebastiano Serlio.) The scientific explanations fall a bit short, and the chapter where he disparages Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's engineering does not show him in a good light. However he does caution you that drywallers, more than any other trade, will try to rip you off with a high materials estimate. Stuff like that you can't get anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Great first source.......2002-01-12

If you want to have a house built, this is a great book to start with. The author is a general contractor who has seen it all and wants to educate readers about the building process. His intention is to prevent others from the pitfalls and scams of building, and simultaneously he explains the science behind plumbing, electricity, sewarage, insulation etc. He also discusses the attitudes and scams of subcontractors and local bureaucrats. This is not a how-to book; the purpose is to educate you enough so that you know what questions to ask as your house goes up.

He begins with purchasing the land and ends with the final detailing of the house. He includes interesting anecdotes to make his points. I was impressed his ability to go from the abstract to simple things usually overlooked. Although I was lost in the section on laying the foundation, the book was written simply, and is easy to follow.

My only criticisms are limited. There are occasional typing errors (I'm an English teacher) and a need for a few more illustrations. The author can also be opininated about his person tastes in decor and such, but I found that to be humorous and endearing. Finally, I don't think the book is titled incorrectly. Yes, you should read it if you want to be your own gerneral contractor. But I think this book is more about the risk involved in doing that. After 20 pages, I was convinced I would definately want a general contractor.

4 out of 5 stars Had a lot of useful tips, but lacked a few key areas.......2001-12-05

I would actually give it 4 1/2 stars if I was able. The book had many useful tips concerning windows, framing and insulating to produce an energy efficient house. It also had tips for hanging drywall, planning lighting and measuring techniques, as well as tips for dealing with contractors and inspectors; all of which are helpful. The authors distaste for basements leads to an absense of information on poured basements which are the standard in my area. He continually pushed slab houses and only had block wall basements as an example. This was disappointing. Not being a plumber, I also would have liked more information on tapping into city sewer and water and into gas lines. Most of his examples were of a septic system and well. The book was not edited well, as it had many spelling errors. If you are not looking for a novel, this should not bother you much because the information in the book is simple and very benificial. It is well worth the purchase price and should save you a lot of money and headaches if you decide to build your own house.

I should have read this BEFORE I bought my house... All of my fake wood siding is falling off. I'll definitely follow all of the HBP's guidelines on my next home purchase! Bottom line... Tight book.

Our new house is nearly complete and we used the book to guide us through the entire process. The book is laid out logically and very well mirrored our experience. The most helpful information came from the chapters informing us of the missteps that can be made before construction even begins, especially from a legal standpoint. Even though we used a reputable builder, we still had several occasions where our sales person and the construction supervisor tried to pull "fast ones" on us.

You can tell the author knows his stuff. The real life examples of other people's mistakes clearly reinforce the reasoning behind the advice he offers.

The only thing lacking was illustrations, but they weren't really necessary. I thought the book served its purpose well and kept our builder honest.

This book examines some of the different ways consumers get themselves in trouble when building a new house, adding to an existing house, or just hiring a single person to work for them. It describes how to avoid some of these pitfalls, and other ways to save money. It also goes over the proper way to hire someone to work on their home, whether they should be their own contractor, how to schedule, etc. It also has many forms a consumer can use to help them in the hiring, scheduling, and planning stages of any construction process. This book is a multi-project workbook that can be as useful as any tool in your toolkit. It may be the wisest investment you make in your home.

First, to be fair, the author's make some mildly helpfull points. However, anyone who has spent even a few hours interviewing builders and/or architects will already be familiar with most of the points made. The book is very brief. Only the first 30 pages are actual text. The remainder of the book is example forms (4 copies of each to add girth to book, no doubt). I should think that anyone, after building one home, could write as well or better.

My neighbors had some work done on their house and it ended up being quite a disaster. I saw this book advertised locally and bought it. I can pretty safely say that we eliminated some contractors because of the book that we might have hired. The one we did hire met all of the qualifications outlined in the book and we have a beautiful addition to prove it. I know that because of many things in the "pitfall" book we had a good remodeling experience. John Francis
