Book Description

The contagious energy and optimism of the new century spurred architects Charles and Henry Greene and their clients, David and Mary Gamble, to break with tradition in 1907 to create a home that was original and uniquely American. After an introduction to the Greenes, the Gambles, and the house, the reader examines at close range the artistry and craftsmanship that makes this house one of the treasures of the century. Book Description

Here are directions for many creative, fun-to-do pottery projects potters can follow to produce handsome finished objects without need of a potter's wheel. The author instructs in coil, slab, mold, and pinch techniques to produce pots, bowls, vases, tiles, and other decorative pieces. She also advises on acquiring basic tools, mixing and preparing clay, and using coloring agents. Newcomers to pottery crafting will especially appreciate her tips for making projects easier to accomplish, such as use of a hairdryer at regular intervals for drying out too-wet clay, and easy methods for keeping clay soft and pliable. Step-by-step color photos with detailed captions guide handcrafters through each project from start to finish. Many photos are of the cutaway type to show correct hand positions for controlling the clay, both inside and outside the form. Here's the book that takes the mystery out of handbuilding in clay, demonstrating each step in the pottery-making process. More than 400 color photos.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it........2007-04-16

I had to get some books for my ceramic class. then I researched these from the internet and all kinds of bookstores. I ended up finding several books after that. This is one of best books giving us great information for handbuilding techniques. Especially for beginner!!!It also shows you how to make each project step by step. then finished one w/ expraination for glazing and other stuff. You will love it.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected... I was looking for 'dinnerware'.......2006-09-20

I purchased this book for 'dinnerware' ideas. But there were few of these items that are featured in this book. There are alot of 'artsy' or sculpture-like ceramics that are featured. If you want to know about handbuilding and working with molds, this is a great book for you.

Overall, I'd have to say that this book has alot of great information, great instructions, and pictures. But the information is not what I was looking for. I will keep it incase my interest changes to work more with the featured type of ceramics.

    5 out of 5 stars great ideas!.......2006-08-01

I love this book! A co-worker/co-potter friend had this book and after glancing through it I knew I had to have it. Many ideas for projects, detailed explanations, simple and fun to make projects. Great for teachers or if you just need some inspiration.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend!.......2006-07-19

'Handbuilt pottery techniques revealed...' has already beome an indispensible tool for showing students different ways of working with clay. The step by step instructions and photographs are clear and easy to follow - even for absolute beginners.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-07-30

I bought this while taking a class on hand building. This was an excellent supplement and would recommend it to anyone learning hand building pottery. It has lots of great projects with step by step instructions.

    Book Description

Encourage elementary and middle school-age kids to build their clay-sculpting skills at home with these lessons and projects designed for use in the classroom. They’ll model a pinch pot, coil animals, fossils, vases, masks, and tiles that they can embellish with rubber stamps. Best of all, these projects will foster children’s confidence in their abilities and stimulate new ideas.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A True Teacher's Book.......2004-08-17

I have used this book since it's publication and it is a wonderful classroom resource for anyone involved with handbuilding in clay. The examples are authentic--you know they really were made by children. The project ideas are very timely and especially geared to younger children. A must for any visual art library.

    5 out of 5 stars Great ideas.......2002-10-23

This book has been very helpful for myyoung children's clay classes. We successfully completed several projects from this book and everyone was happy: teacher, kids, parents. It was fun seeing the older kids come over from their wheels and be jealous of the little kids' projects. The book has also been a source of joy to me since the animal projects we did in class were so much fun, I continued the projects long after class was over.

The writing is clear, sometimes sparse, but the pictures are good. I also appreciated the associated learning that can accompany the projects (or vice versa).

5 out of 5 stars AN IMAGINATION BOOSTER.......2001-11-11

The concise, clearly worded directions are easy to follow. No wasted words; no partial explanations. In the photographs accompanying each project, I like the mix of student and mature work. Also commendable are the explanations of how basic handbuilding techniques can be combined to produce lively ceramic art. All in all, The Great Clay Adventure stimulates the imagination. I highly recommend this book for clay artists, art teachers and school libraries.

    5 out of 5 stars NC K-12 Clay Exhibit.......2001-07-08

The past three years I have had the privilege of chairing an exhibition of K-12 student work in clay for the NC Pottery Center located in Seagrove, NC. This year my grant was generous enough for me to present each teacher who participated in our exhibiton a copy of Ellen Kong's book, The Great Clay Adventure. Each receipient was thrilled and eager to begin new clay projects with students.

We at the Pottery Center feel confident that distributing this incredible and inspiring book across our clay rich state of 100 counties will definitely stimulate our next generation of potters!!! Thank you, Ellen Kong!!

    5 out of 5 stars At last!.......2000-12-20

I have been looking for just the right book to help me get started doing workshops with children in my small town. Today I came upon "The Great Clay Adventure" and I am delighted. The pictures are clear and colorful, the instructions easy to follow and 'extensions' given at the end of each chapter will enhance the total clay experience. I will add this book to my library and will use it often.

    Book Description

In this book, Michael Hardy looks at the traditional handbuilding methods--pinching, coiling, slab building, and pressmolding--and explains how to do them. For many years these methods were eclipsed by throwing on a potter's wheel which came to dominate as a making method. However, in the past 30 years handbuilding has once again become a preferred technique among ceramic artists. These artists are engaged in exploring the creative possibilities that handbuilding offers, experimenting fully with and combining techniques in an effort to achieve their artistic vision. The results have brought forth some of the most exciting ceramics today.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for ceramic artists.......2001-01-16

Michael Hardy's Handbuilding is a ceramics handbook that would be a perfect choice for any art school interested in the traditional methods of handbuilding ceramics outside of the potter's wheel. This introduction to techniques covers everything from construction to controlling drying and slab building and is an excellent guide for ceramic artists interested in the revitalized art of handbuilding.

This book has several very good alternative handbuilding techniques that I've found useful over the years. It is easy to understand, and is illustrated just enough to give you a good sense of what is possible using each individual technique. This book is an excellent resource for the beginner ready to move beyond the beginning.

Much more than a basic overview! Has a lot of intriguing designs that, unlike more advanced books, are totally reproducable for the beginning to intermediate artist. Has pinch pots, pinch sculpture, coil pots, coil sculpture, slab pots & sculpture and a section on clay surface embellishment - the decorative textural treatment of clay. Abstract works, also.

    2 out of 5 stars Clay : Hand Building.......2000-02-06

The title is more precise than one would hope. The text delivers not a guide nor a how-to book, but rather a simple definition. Basic yet adequate black & white photo illustrations provide no more than a cursury surfing of the term hand building. Although useful to define the technique from throwing on a wheel, this book is useless if one is searching for an in depth study of proper hand building technique.

It's so tiny and yet has everything: great projects with excellent pictures, such creative ideas...and gallery photos of similiar projects from other artists for inspiration. But there is also handy tips in the sidebars concerning each project or just general useful information about using a certain technique. There is even general info on wedging, safety, firing temps, etc. A great beginner eye-opener but also inspiring for the advanced. I'm a pottery teacher and I found this tiny book a refreshing breather from the wheel.

In Partial Recall, twelve Native American artists and writers look deep into the images that have shaped our ideas of "Indianness," and explore the complex relationship of photography to identity. For this volume, edited and introduced by Lucy Lippard, each contributor has chosen one or two photographs as the point of departure for their original poetic, historical, political, or autobiographical essays. With an additional portfolio of more than sixty photographs drawn from around the country, Partial Recall is a unique and valuable anthology.

                Book Description

The role of the knowledge activist is to be unreasonable, to identify and combine those small grains of truth that have the potential to become pearls.

The Knowledge Activist's Handbook demonstrates through the medium of storytelling how individuals can combine emotion and reflection to create their own knowledge.

Victor Newman, Pfizer's Chief Knowledge Officer, attacks the conspiracy of tedium around KM literature. The Knowledge Activist's Handbook is provocative and counter-cultural. It turns ideas on their heads and entertains while telling stories that offer insights and concrete strategies for improving knowledge and its use in any organization.

This is a book for busy people who want to cut to the chase and have some fun at the same time. Being a knowledge activist means deciding to make thinking about knowledge a personal activity. The Knowledge Activist's Handbook encourages individuals to consider thinking their own thoughts about knowledge by reflecting on their own experience. Each chapter includes stories from the author's consulting experiences and ends with five immediate action points.

                5 out of 5 stars A Real Gem.......2005-03-17

Newman's The Knowledge Activists Handbook is a revelation, or should be to so called KM practioners!

It should be compulsory reading for all KMers as well as anyone studying business management, information studies and information management and more importantly computing and IT!

It is innovative, revolutionary and iconoclastic and de-bunks all the myths of "knowledge management"

The book has a unique character in that you can dip in and out but more importantly is action oriented. Knowledge Management previously and still is high-minded and scholastic. Newman cuts to the chase and gives practical points at each chapter

Get on the "Dead Cat Hunt", stop paralysis by analysis and kill the "Knowledge Idiots"

I am waiting for Newman's sequel!

                4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2004-05-06

Author Victor Newman sets out to demystify knowledge management, strip away the jargon and offer a clear, useful guide to integrating emotions and logic practically. His information is random, bouncy with unconnected - though interesting - anecdotes, mostly in the first person. The author didn't assemble his thoughts in a very orderly way, given that this is more of a notebook than a book, but he comes through with punchy, tight chapters and a rare sense of humor. Most writing about knowledge management is tedious and academic. This book aims to break that pattern. It's a collection of personal stories, because knowledge management is, after all, a personal enterprise. As a notebook, this publication has both utility and merit. Newman offers valid criticisms of current knowledge management practices, and suggests some modes of thought and some useful readings. Sequence isn't the priority here, content is. You will find nuggets of useful knowledge management lore and counsel. We recommend keeping the book handy and dipping in often for a helping hand. This notebook is like any other set of knowledge: you'll have to manage it a bit.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, fun read on the realities of KM.......2003-05-13

Newman has put together a very readable collection of articles and thought-pieces that express his somewhat-contrarian ideas on knowledge management. The book aims at high-level management and people who will be leading KM efforts for the good of an entire company.

A major theme is that knowledge management has to be about innovation. He argues in a number of pieces that for KM to provide any value to the organization, it must enable the innovation process in all its forms. This means supporting the Creators (the idea people), the Implementors (the people who can see the value of the Creators' ideas and get them to market) and the Stabilizors (the people who keep the ship running) in the correct balance. Newman argues that knowledge management is about stability, whereas knowledge development is about dynamism.

My favorite thought in the book is that having knowledge does not fix a problem, just like knowing smoking causes cancer. The organization has to have something in addition to the knowledge to make the requisite changes.

Newman rails against the hijacking of the KM terminology by three "lost tribes" of infromation technology, organizational learning, and lean production. I am not sure what value this adds to the book besides providing grounds for several diatribes and funny examples of the wrong way to do KM.

5 out of 5 stars Best Business Book of the last 10 Years!.......2003-04-18

Since the mid 90's, CONSULTANTS (from a strategy and/or implementation perspective) have been attempting to explain a product/solution/offering called "Knowledge Management" (KM) to CORPORATIONS.

It took 10 years, but someone has finally written a practical, yet breakthrough, "handbook" on the subject of KM. There have been volumes written about the topic (publications, seminars, thinktanks, products, etc.), but Victor Newman is the first to "Break it All Down" and apply this high-level concept to the real world.

To do this, he has broken all the rules. The book is intentionally short (167 pages). The chapters are short (2-5 pages). He pokes fun at the academics who theorize KM, but also the consultants who pitch it, and the corporations who want to implement it.

Through the use of concise (and very humorous) chapters, rounded with historical context and real-life stories from the business world, he paints a picture of how to use Knowledge for increasing the value of any business.

                A few favorite passages:
"Ultimately, if your addiction is to technology you are in for a bumpy ride. If your addiction is to the creation and delivery of value, you just might get what you want."

"If you want to understand how organizations manage their knowledge, look at the way they manage projects. If they don't capture the lessons and integrate them into their processes and behaviors, then they don't understand knowledge management."

You must read this book, whether you are a consultant, academic, or corporate employee with a desire to attain the status of "knowledge activist".

                3 out of 5 stars basic.......2004-04-20

Mainly geared towards showing a basic overview of the 5 most common beginning investor techniques. I do like that he includes info on multi-family as most of these books aimed at beginners just cover single-family investments.

The danger with these books are that readers new to the field might just strike off and try to do some of these things without further investigation. In his defense, I will say he is one of the few authors who explains some of the lien dangers involved with buying foreclosed properties (mainly IRS liens.)

3 out of 5 stars Good Beginning Book, However.......2003-02-23

there is not enough meat on these bones for the experienced real estate investor. This 2000 book draws on the author's 30 years of real estate experience as an educator and consultant. His 5 paths are: Fixer-uppers, Lease/option, wholesale, buy and hold single family homes, as well as multifamily rentals. These 5 categories are by no means the ONLY paths in real estate, but they are the most common paths and the paths most frequently used by beginners. The book is 285 pages and is a wide broad look at real estate. The book is geared to the beginner and maybe the intermediate investor and would probably be too light, for the experienced inestor. However, somebody experienced in one of the 5 paths might enjoy and benefit from reading about the other paths, though light reading. There are so many topics discussed in the book, that many topics were not presented to the depth that I was looking for. There are case-studies in the book which are very helpful to illustrate the points the author is trying to make. In addition there are many examples using real dollar figures, which makes the understanding of the topic easier. But the vast number of topics covered dictates that the depth of each subject is limited. For example the chapter on Buy and Hold Single Family is 15 pages and the chapter on Buy and Hold multifamily is 14 pages. Compare this to the David Schumacher book "Buy and Hold" which is 306 pages. Now which book do you think covers the topic with more depth. This is a book that I'd would recommend to anybody, the advice given in this book is real, down to earth, and practical. This book is much better than many others, but will only scratch the surface for the serious investor. The depth given to each topic is not enough and will leave the serious, and hungry investor wanting more, but this is a good place to start.

                5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Introduction to R.E. Investing.......2002-07-08

                Folks,

I read this book, loved it. Passed it to a friend, who passed it to a friend. I haven't the vaguest clue as to where it is now. The only reason that I write this is because the book is an awesome way to introduce people to real estate investing.

If you are already aware of what you can do to make money in RESIDENTIAL Real Estate then this book is not for you. There is very little detail that you would find useful in this book, that wouldn't be better explained in another more advanced book, or even a college course.

However, I stress that this IS "THE BOOK" for those new to Real Estate investing. It covers the basic strategies for those who are interested in knowing what options and methods are available to them in Residential Real Estate Investing. I hope this helps. Please vote if it does.

2 out of 5 stars Very basic - too simplistic.......2000-11-27

The book covers five (5) very diverse ways to make money in the real estate market. The only problem is that four of the five catagories are treated too simplistic.

I live in the Milwaukee area and have been investing in multi-families for five years. Real estate investing is a great and quick equity builder. The tricky part is that real estate has been very robust here. A lot of these authors write as if we were still in a recession. They act as if good quality homes are being auctioned at the sheriff's office or that banks are loaded up on suburban defaults.

Every sheriff sale that I have been to in the suburbs has a price above market value.

Most of the owners that will do lease / options are selling inner city junk. Flipping houses in a hot or expensive market is a very tricky act, because you have a commitment for a high capital product. For instance, take a house at $170,000. Monthly hold cost will be high - $ 2,000 (including taxes). Wisconsin has a title transfer fee. Add in a realtor's fee and you really have to buy low. There are realtors every morning searching the MLS for ubder valued properties. I know some of them. "Get a steal" is fairly difficult.

Another truth that I discovered, if there is a really good deal, investors with cash reserves, will step in and buy. That means approaching an owner in greater MILW suburbs with an under valued property with all owner financing does not go to far.

The key to finding a good property; get to the owners before the realtors do. Do a mailing to apartment owners. Call them up. I have never been yelled at or hung up on when I called an owner and told them I was interested in buying their property. That how I brought my last two.

Last note, novices at "fixing-up" property generally under- estimate cost (and the value of their time) is fixing up houses.

In general, I thought he gave specific numbers in each example. However, I though they were unrealistic and not applicable to this market. The book is good for someone not in real estate, who wants to get in. However, readers will some intermediate real estate knowledge will be bored with the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Novices.......2000-08-27

I'm just starting out in Real Estate Investing, and this is the first book I've read on the topic. The book explains the 5 "paths" in a way that, as a beginner, I can still understand, yet its far from being simplistic.

I was expecting this book to be just a basic "overview" of Real Estate investing, but the author gives you a lot more inforation than just the basics.
