Book Description

Invisible Gardens is a composite history of the individuals and firms that defined the field of landscape architecture in America from 1925 to 1975, a period that spawned a significant body of work combining social ideas of enduring value with landscapes and gardens that forged a modern aesthetic. The major protagonists include Thomas Church, Roberto Burle Marx, Isamu Noguchi, Luis Barragan, Daniel Urban Kiley, Stanley White, Hideo Sasaki, Ian McHarg, Lawrence Halprin, and Garrett Eckbo.

They were the pioneers of a new profession in America, the first to offer alternatives to the historic landscape and the park tradition, as well as to the suburban sprawl and other unplanned developments of twentieth-century cities and institutions. The work is described against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the Second World War, the postwar recovery, American corporate expansion, and the environmental revolution.

The authors look at unbuilt schemes as well as actual gardens, ranging from tiny backyards and play spaces to urban plazas and corporate villas. Some of the projects discussed already occupy a canonical position in modern landscape architecture; others deserve a similar place but are less well known. The result is a record of landscape architecture's cultural contribution - as distinctly different in history, intent, and procedure from its sister fields of architecture and planning - during the years when it was acquiring professional status and struggling to define a modernist aesthetic out of the startling changes in postwar America.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Thorough Presentation.......2001-06-28

Invisible Gardens is a well-written, lively introduction to the confluence of landscape architecture and modernism during the middle decades of the twentieth century. Although somewhat like a textbook in its style of presentation, the writing throughout is clear, incisive and often quite absorbing. And there are plenty of black and white photos and architectural renderings which accompany the text to enhance its ability to inform. But only twelve colour plates were included in Invisible Gardens. I felt a bit let-down personally by this aspect of the project. I thought the book could have used additional high quality colour plates of the often spectacular commissions under review to balance the density of the text. And to convey visually what often needs to be seen to be properly appreciated.

        Book Description

Published on the occasion of the U.S. premiere of Jeremy Blake's new Winchester trilogy, this lush and strikingly designed catalogue presents three of the artist's short films: Winchester, 1906, and Century 21--inspired by the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. The Winchester mansion was built over the course of nearly 20 years by Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester Rifles fortune, who, after the deaths of her daughter and husband, became fascinated with spiritualism and convinced that she was cursed by the ghosts of people killed by Winchester firearms. According to her spiritual advisors, the noise of ongoing construction would help ward off evil ghosts, so she began building what would become a 160-room Victorian, full of bizarre architectural features, which was still unfinished when she died in 1922. Winchester presents a turning point in Blake's work, as the films include not only his well-known digital compositions, but also ink drawings and recognizable footage of the Winchester mansion and its environs. Overlaid, juxtaposed, and morphing in and out of one another, these elements combine in an intensely expressionistic and non-narrative manner, evoking Winchester's trouble mind as she tried to rebuild her home. The films call into question traditional cinematic modes of storytelling: cultural mythologies surrounding guns; violence, and the American West; and the relationship between physical and simulated reality in the digital age.

Smart, topical commentary on the state of the nation with its consumer culture, manipulative politicians and gullible media. All that and a penguin, too (less like Opus, more like the evil penguin from the Wallace and Grommit animation short). Plus an introduction by Bill Griffith of Zippy fame.

4 out of 5 stars A dozen years later, this book still holds up.......2004-11-15

"Greetings From This Modern World," published back in 1992 collects Tom Tomorrow's politically charged comic strips from 1989 through the end of 1991. While the content itself is over a dozen years old the book still manages to read as if it were published weeks ago with the bulk of its subject matter covering George Bush (Sr.), Iraq and Sadaam Hussein, big government and the warped skewering of 'news' by media broadcasters/publishers/advertisers. While the book will entertain with its razor-sharp aesthetic of sarcasm and political commentary it is somewhat unsettling when realizing how little things have changed since this book was first published.

4 out of 5 stars this title dated, but..........2001-10-09

I love Tom Tomorrows's THIS MODERN WORLD, read it avidly in the local alternative press, and so was delighted to find a copy of this particular title at our local public
            library.

These cartoons are a bit old now...circa the Gulf War & aftermath. But they're still quite funny...We need Tom's
insights now more than ever with the war-hysteria that is
once again gripping our nation (the Gulf War segments in
this collection take on an eerie ring of familiarity in
            recent days).

I've kept up with Tom's latest cartoons and he hasn't
missed a beat. Thank you Tom!

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Modern Satire.......2000-02-03

For anyone sick of anything in this modern world that we live in, prepare to be entertained.

Tom Tomorrow writes his comic with a well-crafted wit that is for anyone who is tired of the misguided politics and organizations of America. It will make you laught, cry, and wince as you come to realize the pathetic and scary state of our United States, and will inspire you to make a change.

5 out of 5 stars brave post-postmodern satire of the funniest stripe.......1998-12-23

Tom Tommorow is a true rebel--unlike most of today's hipsters and ironists, he has the guts to stand for something and stay committed to"outmoded" ideas like peace and social justice while holding on to a damn good sense of humor and an eye for the truly absurd(aka the rich and powerful). His honesty, wit, and, yes, stridency puts him a few notches above any other cartoonist I've seen. Buy the book and you'll look at the culture we live in with new eyes. Peace out

4 out of 5 stars Tomorrow looks a lot like yesterday..........1998-03-27

...but that's part of why it's so unsettling. Tom Tomorrow's use of clip art - and his prevalence of '50s imagery - may well be an attempt to cover up a lack of drawing ability, but it works incredibly well to get across a feeling of unworldliness - that the material he deals with happens in some strange parallel dimension where families are still nuclear, politicians are loving, and there's two cars in ever garage. This, of course, makes the fact that he's actually making observations on how everything works in the real world even more biting and relevent than it would have been if he just drew everything from scratch. His humour is sarcastic and surreal, tending towards analysis of politicians and the media. This, his first collected volume, shows his progress from vague satire on contemporary consumerist society to more directed attacks on the banality of television, the fact that we're continually surprised by political misdoings, and, well, satire on contemporary consumerist society.

Thoughtful, witty, sarcastic and surreal, Tom Tomorrow is a very clued up cartoonist. Definitely worth reading; several times, for preference. How many other cartoons can deconstruct network news coverage of Gulf War protests and still have you crying with laughter on the floor?

                  Crucial for day-to-day managerial decision-making!

Professor Hossein Bidgoli, in his 1997 publication, Modern Information Systems for Managers, addresses a wide range of MIS topics ranging from information systems basics to an in-depth discussion of topics such as geographical information systems, group support systems, total quality management and information systems reengineering. This book is suitable for MBA level and undergraduate MIS capstone courses, as well as for professional corporate level training courses. Modern Information Systems for Managers covers a broad range of topics ranging from basic information systems and computer literacy to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and expert systems. Major topics include: information systems basics, hardware and software concepts, database concepts, and a thorough discussion of the social and legal issues involved with the implementation and utilization of information systems. Artificial Intelligence topics include a thorough discussion of expert systems development. Through in-depth discussion and accompanying case examples, Professor Bidgoli presents the information in an easy to comprehend manner. Modern Information Systems for Managers is a must read for both IT managers and IT students. I have used this book in a classroom environment and students found it very easy to understand. This book is highly recommended for both professional and educational use.

5 out of 5 stars Borrowing with wisdom.......2004-09-28

I have been in the financial services industry for over 15 years having spent the last 4 years in Home Equity. I am amazed that an insider would share so much information in such an easy to read format. There has never been a book written specifically for Home Equity from this perspective.

The author is clearly an expert in this field and provides the consumer with real knowledge that is absolutely essential to you making the right decisions with your money. With so many choices and so little time for all of us, this book helps to identify how to efficiently choose the right loan program, the right lender, and sets clear expectations that the consumer can rely on.

I have ordered copies of the book for all of my 8 siblings as Christmas gifts. They will all be smarter borrowers in 2005.

                        Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Money.......2004-07-16

I highly recommend this book. It is one of the most useful personal finance books I've read in long time. Each chapter contains practical tips and insider knowledge that the average home equity loan borrower (like me) simply would not otherwise have access to. There is no question that the cost of this book can be recovered several times over by anyone who already has a home equity loan or is considering taking one out.

I spent a lot of time searching the web for information before getting my home equity loan. Mostly what I found was advertising and infomercial "advice" from lenders and mortgage brokers. Nowhere did I find the type of independent, practical guidance contained in this book.

5 out of 5 stars An easy read and a wealth of info.......2004-05-08

This is a frequently humorous and easy-to-read book that contains a real wealth of information and tips about home equity lending and mortgages in general. I've been a financial professional (not in the mortgage business) for over 15 years and I was surprised by how much I learned from it. The author has a down-to-earth style that greatly lightens what might otherwise be fairly heavy subject matter. For those in the market for a home equity loan or line of credit, this book is a "must-have" ... it will pay for itself many times over. I would also recommend it to anyone who just wants to learn a bit more about mortgages in general - this book explains it all in clear terms and will alleviate most of the confusion that seems inextricably tied to the process of taking out or refinancing a mortgage. You will finally understand what is being talked about and will know the right questions to ask. All in all, a very good way to spend an evening.
