    Book Description

Norman Foster and Renzo Piano invoke his name. For many architects he is a landmark - Jean Prouvé, creator of the metal curtain wall, pioneer in its application and early initiator of industrialised building techniques. His unfailing ability to combine functional engineering achievements with artistic sensitivity commands recognition. The period covered in this latest volume is significant in many respects. The post-war years placed enormous demands on housing and school construction. In his Maxéville factory Prouvé developed pre-fabricated housing, facade panelling, light filtering and other systems on a large scale. He was inspired by the works of the automobile and aeronautics industry, developing new applications for aluminium, which he presented in the 1954 Aluminium Centenary Pavilion. Moreover, Prouvé's furnitures of this period have become valuable collectors' items, some of which are now being reissued under licence.

3 out of 5 stars Only an average plein air book.......2006-06-16

I'd rate this as your average plein air book for two reasons: because it spends too much of the book on preparing for plein air painting and because it should've been written as separate books for the different mediums.

I admit that I want a good plein air book on oils without all the introductory material that's repeated in every book you buy. If you need something more basic or work equally in both mediums then the other reviews are more appropriate. For a little more detail on the contents of the book, read on.

The book is divided into six chapters: 1) Gathering your Gear (24 pages), 2) Making the Most of Your Colors (10 pages), 3) Plein Air Painting (12 pages), 4) Plein Air Painting in Watercolor (26 pages), 5) Plein Air Painting in Oil (30 pages), 6) Using Plein Air Work in the Studio (18 pages)

I count 29 illustrations of finished oil paintings, plus 3 multi-step (8 to 9) ilustrated demonstrations of plein air paintings in oil. These are of Saint Mary River in Glacier National Park, a snow covered stream surrounded by willows, and Grosvenor Arch in the Utah desert.

I count 32 illustrations of finished watercolor paintings, plus 3 multi-step (7-10) illustrated demonstrations of plein air paintings in watercolor. These are of the California Coast, a covered bridge on a river valley, and a white house in bright late morning light.

There's a lot of talk of colors used in the demonstrations plus additional worthy discussion with other paintings. Note that the cover paintings are not among the demonstrations. Aside from the pencil sketches all illustrations in the book are color.

I'd like to see Frank cut the preparatory material to 1/3 its size and turn this into two books - doubling the illustrations, demonstrations and discussion of each medium.

    4 out of 5 stars A practical guideline overall in plein-air painting........2001-12-03

This book could have earned a 4.5 stars in my rating system. Overall, it is a practical guideline for beginning/intermediate painters who may have just started to paint out-of-doors. My review targets these groups of readers and their presumed interests in purchasing/reading this book.

    Pros:

    1) The book has VERY PRACTICAL sections on material, tools, gears, etc... to get you "out of the house" to go painting. The information is available for both watercolorists and "oilists" ("oil-ists", OK, so I made up this word!) I myself find these sections particularly clear and helpful, especially for those who have already invested quite a bit in the facility to paint in-doors, as spending more money in extra tools for painting out-of-doors might become a burden. The accurate information provided in the book is certainly a big help to readers.

    2) The book is well-organized and easy to read. The author covers discussion on colors, composition, then moves on to demonstrating painting plein-air in watercolors and oils. Each demo is shown step-by-step with somewhat in-depth discussion on color choices and art maneuver in each step.

    3) The book also covers other issues, such as the use of multiple photos to create a painting, conversion of oil to water colors and vice versa, the recreation of paintings in the studio based on small paintings done on location, painting from memory, etc.

    4) As I mentioned above, the STRONGEST point of the book, in my opinion, is that it covers the very practical aspects of this genre, in order to prepare the readers to "get out and paint" and perhaps achieve certain progresses as starters. I also appreciate the efforts of the author in sharing with the readers some of his valuable tips in painting out-of-doors. For instance, to avoid distraction when painting during the winter, one thing to do is to keep your feet warm. The author provides some very simple and useful solution (no, it is not just wearing warm boots), which must have come from his years of painting out-of-doors. "What solution", you ask? Well, it is for me to know (since I read it), and for you to find out! (It is all in there.)

    Cons:

These are not really "cons", but rather my opinions of things that may have made this book a "better" one (perhaps).

    1) I myself find the demos are a bit wordy in explaining color choices in each step. I did find myself skipping pages when reading the book due to boredom. However, considering the fact that this is NOT the first art book I read, nor am I brand-new to oil painting, it could be a very personal thing. On the other hand, other intermediate/advanced oil painters may feel the same way I did.

    2) I do not agree with other comments putting down other authors of plein-air painting in praising this book. Although I agree the author of this book has succeeded in making this book simple and easy to read, I do find some other titles did a rather good job in explaining concepts, principles, theories, and techniques in painting out-of-doors. As a matter of fact, I find in them (other books) certain depths which may be very valuable to advanced plein-air painters. To back my opinion, the author of this book himself recommends "you" (the readers) to resort to those books as well (in the cited references).

    5 out of 5 stars Splendid Guide.......2001-03-26

Frank LaLumia has succeeded where many authors fail - providing excellent instruction in a concise manner. His own works are inspiring and his command of the various media is impressive, but his greatest strength is that he explains in a page or two concepts that other books mumble on about for entire chapters. I was delighted and inspired by this artist's stunning first book. Keep on writing, Mr. LaLumia!

    Book Description

Germaine Krull (1897-1985) led an extraordinary life that spanned nine decades and four continents. She witnessed many of the high points of modernism and recorded some of the major upheavals of the twentieth century. Her photographs include avant-garde montages, ironic studies of female nudes, press propaganda shots, as well as some of the most successful commercial and fashion images of her day. Her political commitments led her from communist allegiance to incarceration in Russia as a counterrevolutionary to support of the Free French cause against Hitler to a reclusive existence among Tibetan monks in India. Kim Sichel's study of this remarkable artist reveals a life of deep convictions, implausible transformations, complex emotional relationships, and inspired achievements.

Krull refused to limit herself to one long-term relationship, one geographical region, or one set of religious and moral beliefs. Contemporary critics ranked her with Man Ray and André Kertesz. Younger photographers such as Berenice Abbott looked up to her. Yet until recently the absence of an archive has made a proper evaluation of Krull's contribution to photography and to modernism difficult if not impossible. In this book Sichel examines Krull's autobiographical texts and photographic oeuvre to present and unravel the rich mythology that Krull fabricated around her life and work. The chapters follow the geographical and chronological sequence of Krull's life, moving from Munich to Moscow to Berlin to Amsterdam to Paris to Brazil to Africa to Bangkok and other locations. This book, which accompanies the first major retrospective exhibition on Krull, should secure Krull's rightful place among the masters of twentieth-century photography.

5 out of 5 stars beautifully printed - clearly written.......2000-05-31

This book is a beautiful book about German photographer Germain Krull. Her career spanned the 20th century and several continents. Her work during the 1920s in Paris helped shape the modern photographic style, and Kim Sichel's writing about this photographer is clear and insightful. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in influential women or in photography.

5 out of 5 stars best retrospective book of 1999.......2000-05-10

I was on the Maine Photographic Workshop's 1999 Golden Light Award committee (with photographers Slyvia Plachy and Len Jenshel, in April 2000), and we voted this best retrosepctive photography book of 1999. It's a comprehensive, lively, and engagingly designed overview of this intriguiing but little-known artist's work. Our critieria: books we'd want to have on our shelves at home. Coming from a photo book publisher, 'nuff said.

1 out of 5 stars I would like to admit.......1999-01-12

that I did not actually buy this book. I looked at the cover (you can see it above) and said to myself "God, it must get funnier than that". Guess what? It didn't. Read the lame comic on the cover right now. Did you laugh? Was it funny in anyway? Didn't think so. That was the best joke of the whole book. If you don't trust me just ask yourself if you believe that an editor would choose to put a lame comic on the COVER rather than a funny one (in order to "hook" the consumer). That sad truth is that that is the best Judd has to offer. Your money can be better spent elsewhere on this site.

1 out of 5 stars In case you didn't notice..........1999-01-07

...I read this strip book and found it boring... It is not "witty"... "Thinking man's comic"?!? Please... For those of you who don't know, this book is full of those stupid cartoons you see in the "Idiot's guide to" books... If that's your idea of "witty" or "intelligent humor" then buy this book otherwise save your hard earned $$....

      4 out of 5 stars A Lot Of Fun.......1998-12-15

I read this book on a flight to Chicago and it was a lot of fun. Judd's humor is dead-on when it comes to the absurdity of the modern day workplace (and society of that matter). While this book is just "quickie" one panel strips, they are extremly funny. People who find strips like Dilbert, the Far Side and Bloom County will want to check this book out.

5 out of 5 stars What Dilbert should be!.......1998-12-14

In the steel-caged match of Dilbert vs. Winick, I'm amazed that more people haven't noticed Winick. The guy's got a true talent for going after the "smart-joke." Yes, there are a few that fall short, but a lot of these cartoons give me that same feeling that used to come from reading Bloom County. I don't know what the other reviewers were reading, but they're missing the point. Of course, if you're a cranky whitebread little surburbanite who's jealous that they weren't on the Real World, and you prefer something unchallenging, then naturally this book isn't for you. But if you want to see raw, new cartoons that don't go for the obvious joke, this is the one to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Not like every other cartoon book....THANK GOD!.......1998-12-13

Judd Winick, creator of "Frumpy the Clown" is back in the cartoon sphere of life, where by his fans he has been sorely missed. Most know Winick from his time on MTV's "the Real World." But, this book helps to illustrate that his talent was not allowed the spotlight it deserved on that show. Being a fan of Frumpy, and missing my daily dose of humor, this book provides me with the laughter Winick's art has always provided me. Winick unlike all other cartoonists has new ideas and thoughts on our world and has not become a sell out Jim Davis. It is thinking man's humor and Winick's sardonic wit is much appreciated in the world of commercialized cartoon art. Thank you Judd for not creating a Dilbert!!!

This beautifully crafted book is a wonderful edition to anyone's collection. Crafted as one would expect from a deluxe edition, with ridged spine, guilded page edges, and ribbon page marker attached. 775 pages of actual poetry with an index of first lines in the back and a table of contents, list of illustrations, and an index of authors in the front of the book. The only caution I would give to anyone wishing to purchase this book is that the Font (Type) used is quite small (approximately 6 points) which would make it very difficult for anyone with vision problems to enjoy. Otherwise, this volume is a great choice with a good variety of poems and themes to enjoy.

            Book Description

Simply stated, this book will introduce the surprising literary figure behind a familiar name. Though a mere vestige of William Cullen Bryant's fame survives through inclusion of "Thanatopsis" and perhaps one or two other poems in school anthologies, the nineteenth century celebrated him as one of its great men. He not only deserved that acclaim, but he was actually a more important writer than his century recognized.

Half of this volume consists of a Bryant showcase. Three dozen poems chosen from the hundreds he produced reveal him as a revolutionary of prosody seeking refuge from Calvinism in a pantheistic God. Extracts from his criticism are a homily promoting the prospects for American literary nationalism. Also included here is a pair of his tales which, although almost totally unknown, are among the best work in the genre written before the Civil War.

The other half of this new volume presents a concise biography and, of special interest, three groundbreaking new critical studies. Gado argues that Bryant is the Founding Father of American poetry. As a poet of nature, Bryant played a literary role comparable to the influence on art exercised by his good friend Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School. But perhaps even more important was the example Bryant set for Walt Whitman in a relationship explored here for the first time. A much briefer piece discovers the consistent philosophical belief addressed by a lifetime of poems. The third essay is unique in its consideration of Bryant's short fiction, which has never before received attention.

William Cullen Bryant: An American Voice is a landmark publication.

                Book Description

1877. Illustrated by W.J. Linton and J. McEntee. William Cullen Bryant was an American poet and editor. At one time, he practiced law, but later devoted himself entirely to writing. He began his career with Thanatopsis (or View of Death), a boyhood piece which astonished America when it was published in 1817, and which has ever since been a favorite with readers. The idea of the poem, that the earth is a vast sepulcher of human life, was borrowed from other poets; but the stately blank verse and the noble appreciation of nature are Bryant's own. The Flood of Years was written when he was a sage of eighty. Among the Trees is one of his best nature poems. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

                        Book Description

During the years covered in this volume, Bryant traveled more often and widely than at any comparable period during his life. The visits to Great Britain and Europe, a tour of the Near East and the Holy Land, and excursions in Cuba, Spain, and North Africa, as well as two trips to Illinois, he described in frequent letters to the Evening Post. Reprinted widely, and later published in two volumes, these met much critical acclaim, one notice praising the "quiet charm of these letters, written mostly from out-of-the-way places, giving charming pictures of nature and people, with the most delicate choice of words, and yet in the perfect simplicity of the true epistolary style."His absence during nearly one-fifth of this nine-year period reflected the growing prosperity of Bryant's newspaper, and his confidence in his editorial partner John Bigelow and correspondents such as William S. Thayer, as well as in the financial acumen of his business partner Isaac Henderson. These were crucial years in domestic politics, however, and Bryant's guidance of Evening Post policies was evident in editorials treating major issues such as the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Law, the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, the rise of the Republican Party, and the Dred Scott Decision, as well as in his correspondence with such statesmen as Salmon P. Chase, Hamilton Fish, William L. Marcy, Edwin D. Morgan, and Charles Sumner. His travel letters and journalistic writings reflected as well his acute interest in a Europe in turmoil. In France and Germany he saw the struggles between revolution and repression; in Spain he talked with journalists, parliamentary leaders, and the future president of the first Spanish republic; in New York he greeted Louis Kossuth and Giuseppe Garibaldi.Bryant's close association with the arts continued. He sat for portraits to a dozen painters, among them Henry P. Gray, Daniel Huntington, Asher Durand, Charles L. Elliott, and Samuel Laurence. The landscapists continued to be inspired by his poetic themes. Sculptor Horatio Greenough asked of Bryant a critical reading of his pioneering essays on functionalism. His old friend, the tragedian Edwin Forrest, sought his mediation in what would become the most sensational divorce case of the century, with Bryant and his family as witnesses. His long advocacy of a great central park in New York was consummated by the legislature. And in 1852, his eulogy on the life of James Fenimore Cooper became the first of several such orations which would establish him as the memorialist of his literary contemporaries in New York.

                          Book Description

The goal of Inventory Management will be to explain the dynamics of inventory management's principles, concepts, and techniques as they relate to the entire supply chain (customer demand, distribution, and product transformation processes). The interrelationships of all functions will be defined. The book concentrates on understanding the many ramifications of inventory management. In today's competitive business environment, inventory management has proven to be most critical, and this book is directed to the management of inventory to assist in better understanding the body of knowledge required to operate in a competitive world. Almost all functions such as sales, engineering, and accounting have an impact and are impacted by inventory management. The book will assist in the training of students as well as APICS CPIM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management) candidates. As such it will not only be a textbook, but also a desk reference for those employees responsible for controlling inventories, and thereby assist in reducing cost, improving customer service, and maximizing capacity. Each chapter concludes with a case study and suggested solution. The case studies tell the story of a growing company, Smith Industries, and the related inventory management problems it had to address. The problems addressed relate to the subject matter of the chapter.
