Book Description
In addition to being a basic item of furniture to be found in any home, the chair reflects social and aesthetic changes throughout history, provides an ideal medium through which to experiment with new materials or technologies, and challenges the creativity of designers devising new ways to defy gravity's immutable laws to provide support for the human body.Through vivid photography and commentary, Just Chairs describes all facets of chairs, classic designs that have withstood the test of time to revolutionary and modern creations from young designers transforming the chair into an object of art.
After a brief introductory history of the chair, this visual history features chairs designed from the world's most famous designers including Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Eileen Gray, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer, Alvar Aalto, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Arne Jacobsen, Harry Bertoia, Verner Panton, Eero Aarnio, Ettore Sottsass, Vico Magistretti, Oscar Tusquets, and others.
A complete and inspirational look at the too-often-overlooked machine that is the chair, the book is a charming and inspirational resource not only for interior designers but also for all those wishing to find the perfect chair for their lifestyle.
Customer Reviews:
Great showcase of chairs........2006-11-18
Bernie is totally right in his description of this book, and I find it great! The first half of it is devoted to pieces from XX century and the rest to ones from century XXI. The vast majority of them are production models but there is a closing chapter about the chair as a piece of art. As a designer I find all of them very inspiring.
Disappointing selection of chairs.......2006-07-06
I suppose it all depends on what you expect this book to be. I was expecting a history of chairs, with 600 pictures of the chairs. What the book consists of is pictures of 600 mostly modern chairs, essentially all factory made, and almost all made from metal and plastic.
If you're looking for pictures of chairs through time and how they developed over the centuries, look elsewhere.
Extremely disappointing book.

Customer Reviews:
Molas! : Patterns, Techniques, Projects for Colorful Appliqu.......2000-11-09
Although I found this book to be very interesting historically and culturally, I was disappointed in the projects and techniques. Some of the projects were made from paper rather than fabric. I wanted more information on making fabric molas.
Molas! : Patterns, Techniques, Projects for Colorful Appliqu.......2000-11-08
I enjoyed the beautiful photographs and interesting historical and cultural information about the molas. However, I was dissappointed in the projects. There were several projects that were completed out of paper. My interest was in fabric projects.
An excellent reference work........1999-04-07
The writing in this book is clear and concise, the directions are easy to understand. The color photos are sharp. The background of the Mola has obviously been carefully researched. The only fault with this otherwise 5 star book is the lack of many full-size patterns for the beginner to try. Those that are included are mostly too difficult until the sewing technique is perfected.

A photographic account of Jackie's life as First Lady by the man who took some of the couple's most famous portraits: Jack and Jackie with baby Caroline nibbling on Jackie's pearls; Jackie at Hyannis Port wearing a fabulous yellow and white check dress; the couple on a trip to Paris. Lowe is an exceptional photographer, and of course the Kennedys make an excellent subject as Jackie herself is the very essence of photogenic. The result is a glowing record of the First Lady.

Book Description
For those who are not already among the 5 million readers devoted to John Long's syndicated cartoons, Welcome to Lumpy Gravy: Created by John Long, a fireman who was also an artist with a grass-roots art fair following. Lumpy Gravy won a highly publicized competition to replace "The Far Side" cartoon in The Detroit News in 1995.
Perhaps it was the 14 years of life-and-death drama on the job as a fireman that bent John Long's mind into creating the freshest, funniest, oddest, ever-so-deliciously twisted material that comes out as: "Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head consider plastic surgery." William Penn and his brother, Bic." "The wicked witch of the Midwest."
With over 250 cartoons, plus a 16-page full-color insert, John Long proves on every page that he's trying to take cartooning to the next level. Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club, Quality Paperback Book Club, and Troll Book Club. 68,000 copies in print.

Worst Cartoons Ever.......2007-06-24
Sorry to disagree with everyone else, but this is the WORST collection of un-funny cartoons ever. Trying so hard to be "The Far Side", and failing mainly due to... no cleverness, no complexity, no funniness. I'm not trying to be mean; John Long has his heart in the right place. But if you're a clever person at all, you probably won't find more than a handfull of these cartoons remotely funny.
RETURN WITH JOY.......2006-03-27
I met John Long at an art fair and purchased several of his drawings. I forgot I had this book and today returned to read it again.
It is so funny and insightful and captures the humor of many different disciplines, eg: police, dogs, overweight people.
If you have a sense of humor you will never regret buying and enjoying this books, repeaditly.
Good Gravy?.......2002-11-29
I bought this for my grandmother a few weeks before Christmas 2001 in anticipation of a lovely slap-up turkey dinner with lump-free gravy. I'd read a previous customers review claiming they'd bought it and it had revolutionised their Sunday lunches, but I have to say I was very disappointed. Not only was the gravy still lumpy, but it was cold, and hairy. I wouldn't buy this book again.
Rip roaring side splitting funny.......2001-12-11
There are a lot of Garry Larson/ Far Side wannabees out there but John Long may very well BE Gary Larson. (HMMM Gary Larson--Lumpy Gravy G-L L-G ) Lumpy Gravy has all the halarity of the Far Side From Cows that think there Human to prehistoric men and a spotted dog that looks suspiciously like something from the far side. For art stundents there are plenty of spoofs and allusions to classic artists like Picasso, Van Gough and Salvadoe Dali.If you have read every Far Side book out there then this book should be next on your reading list.
Very funny, and very American.......1998-11-29
The angles taken are 'oh-so-true'......the best yet for everyday laughter

Psychology of the Entrepreneur.......2000-07-18
Josephine Herbst's neglect is an incredible injustice. She is truly one of the most perceptive novelists of the century. This volume is especially valuable for its insights into the motivations of a character trying to take advantage of rising capitalism in the reconstruction era. This is the historical novel as serious literature. The first in a trilogy about the Trexler family it should be ranked with Dos Passos' U.S.A. and Farrell's Studs Lonigan as some of the most insightful literature of the thirties.

Book Description
By the end of the 1930s, radical journalist and novelist Josephine Herbst (1892-1969) was widely hailed as one of the most important women writers in America. Yet she died in almost total obscurity.
The Starched Blue Sky of Spain And Other Memoirs comprises four autobiographical works: "The Magicians and Their Apprentices," an intimate remembrance of Herbst's girlhood in turn-of-the-century Sioux City, Iowa; "A Year of Disgrace," a contemplative portrait of American literary culture in the 1920s; "Yesterday's Road," an explorative meditation on Herbst's life as a radical; and the title selection, a poignant and lucid evocation of the author's experience during the Spanish Civil War.

Fascinating history.......2007-07-25
I read this book a while ago so I don't remember many details, but I do know that I was fascinated by the glimpse of early American radicals, including the writer Josephine Herbst and the other, more well-known writers who were a part of her world. The book was well-written and easy to read, and made me want to read Herbst herself.

Ride the housing crash to big gains, build recession-proof wealth, protect your biggest investment We are in the midst of uncertain economic times. After all, your house is your single largest investment. In his incredibly timely book, industry veteran Rubino outlines: -The present U.S. real estate market and how it got this way -Statistics that indicate the coming dramatic market turn, including the increased use of cash-out mortgages and near-record levels of consumer debt -Consideration of the events that will inevitably follow the bursting of the bubble -Strategies for protecting yourself -Clear ways to profit from the crash How to Profit from the Coming Real Estate Bust is the essential how-to book to read if you want to survive, and benefit from, the upcoming crash.

not useful anymore.......2007-02-07
If this is the first time you've thought of or talked to anyone about real estate, it's worth a read. You get some history. If you've read any newspaper, magazine or book about real estate in the last year, you don't have to read the first 3/4 of the book. It's the same stuff over and over again. The last part suggests stock picks, buying gold and holding cash. Financial advice should probably not be taken from a journalist anyway.
If you're a contrarian, doesn't the bubble only burst when people say it's not going to burst?
smart money.......2007-01-17
Since REAL ESTATE, SP500(target 50 / 100) are heading deep south,
it is my pleasure to receive honest advice
from a seasoned journalist who has seen many ups and down
and all the bluff at market tops like todays many times over
and can give us outright advice of how to ride our boat
to a safe harbor before the perfect storm.

Advice Taken.......2006-10-05
Two years ago I purchased Mr. Rubino's book. Back then the housing bubble was a seldom-discussed topic. For me, the information and advice made absolute sense. We sold our 5 acre property in Oregon and moved to be close to the kids. We are debt-free, have money in the bank, and will rent until the insanely high house prices decline to a reasonable level. Thank you Mr. Rubino. I could not be happier that I took your timely advice!
An OK book, eye opener for mainstream investors, but old news for most financial professionals.......2006-01-03
First of all, a correction for the review from David "Pudd'nhead" Wilson. Graphing Total US Debt to US GDP shows that it was flat around 1.40 from 1955 to 1981, then exploded up to 1.85 by 1986, flat at 1.85 up to 2001, and *most ominously* has been rising steadily each year .. 1.84 in 2000, 1.90 in 2001, 1.96 in 2002, 2.01 in 2003, 2.05 in 2004.
Get your facts straight before you shoot your mouth off!
Otherwise, this book is interesting reading for most mainstream investors who are bullish on real estate given the last few years' outperformance. For most financial professionals and goldbugs, this won't be anything new and you are probably better off cosying up to something anti-fiat-money like Conquer The Crash, Financial Reckoning Day, or Tomorrow's Gold.
Enjoyed reading this book, highly recommended!.......2005-12-29
The title is slightly misleading. The book is not focused on real estate bust. It starts with introducing the idea of business cycles. Basically if something is flying high, it will eventually fall down. Then there is a nice chapter about derivatives. Most people know that an average US consumer spends more then makes, and this chapter gives an idea what makes it possible. The last few chapters have some suggestions about how to survive a coming bust, but frankly, this part is not that impressive.
The book is really easy to read. It's full of jokes, but it has solid background, so it doesn't sound light.
