Book Description
Why would two talented and employable young graphic designers start up their own practice without any clients, in the midst of a recession, and in a city brimming with world-renowned designers? Karlssonwilker inc.'s tellmewhy is the improbable story of such a venture -- or act of bravura or insanity -- on the part of Hjalti Karlsson and Jan Wilker, and offers a telling, humorous, and always human insight into the workings of a young startup design studio, showcasing every single project they did in their first two years.
A book as iconoclastic as their designs, tellmewhy features fresh stories of karlssonwilker's ordinary office live and its less-than-romantic tales about rooftop parties, battles with immigration, language obstacles, missed meetings, and money problems. Despite these stories -- and because of others -- karlssonwilker has produced an impressive body of work in two short years. Tellmewhy shows the happy endings, including signage for a Philadelphia restaurant, logo designs for a New York fashion house, and CD packaging for both independent and major music labels. And it presents the few unrealized designs, like an ad campaign for a TV network. All share the designers' creative and humorous take on design.
Karlssonwilker intersperses these examples with its singular illustrated diagrams, faux flow charts linking the partners' biographies, work, social lives, and whatever comes to their unique minds.
Tellmewhy offers both inspiration and caution for designers everywhere. A foreword by former employer Stefan Sagmeister recalls karlssonwilker's start in his design office.

Interesting read. Not a typical showcase of a glut of spectacular design, but creatively inspiring. Clever lads!
One of the Best Design Books I Ever Read.......2006-02-24
Quite possible one of the most honest and funny books on design, I kid you not. Truly entertaining and thoughtful for designers of any field, not just graphic design. It works both as a story and an inspirational monograph of their quirky and smart work.
I purchased several copies for many friends in design and plan on purchasing several more. No doubt this would make a great stocking stuffer for the designer in your life and with Amazon's discounted rate with Super Saver Shipping it seems ridiculous to only buy just one copy.
Ain't nothing but a heartache..........2005-09-24
This book is definitely worth buying it. I was reading MADE YOU LOOK, and that's the reason I gave this book 4 stars. Dont get me wrong, TELLMEWHY is amazing, creative and HAPPY. I get the impression Hjalti and Jan still haven't made their masterpiece, yet, you can tell that they're on the way to achive that. KARLSSONWILKER offers the kind of the design you say to yourself : I CAN DO THAT WELL EASY, until you get your canvas and realize that is their style and it's not only the massive use of DIN, TRADE GOTHIC or HELVETICA fonts. It's absolutely more than that. 5 Stars for Karlssonwilker inc. 4 stars for their book, and I'm pretty sure I'll give them 6 on the upcoming BOOK.
Inspiring, but little information........2005-03-29
This was an OK read. It was inspiring but for the amount of content, they had way too many pictures as filler. I felt perhaps this would have been better as a magazine article.
Heartwarming and Inspiring.......2004-12-11
First off, this is not a self help book for designers looking to open their own firm. I'm not sure why the person below me thought that. However, the side effect of wanting to start a firm does sink in after reading this. I read the book cover to cover in a few hours, as I had a hard time putting it down. They could have titled this book, "The Advertising Adventures of Hjalti and Jan". Point is, there is something every designer here can relate to: dealing with clients. The ones you hope to get, and the ones you hope don't call back. What i find particularly inspiring is how this book has not changed them. if you go to their site: http://www.karlssonwilker.com/ they are still rockin the same website. Then again, maybe they haven't had time to change it once all the jobs poured in from this book's success. Or perhaps, they are just like you and I, working from a loft trying to make a dent in the design world, and hoping to be published in the design annual. That's what sets this book apart from most monographs, is that they don't achive ultimate success in the end. They are still bidding for clients and that keeps them humble. There is no secret behind their method of design, other than natural talent for creativity. Sometimes we can lose sight of why we chose this profession. Sometimes we take jobs purely for the money. Stay inspired and buy this book. You will contribute 58¢ to their beer fund. Thank you karllsonwilker!

This book is one huge resume.......2007-02-16
I wish I would have read the reviews before buying this book. At least I got it used. This book is almost devoid of actual tutorials and hands-on learning. The first few chapters have some instruction, but the majority of the book reads like a compilation of resumes with stunning imagery. There are lots of pictures and in-depth biographies of industry professionals with very little tips on how to create the images included. If you are a new user looking to expand your skills this is not the book for you. If you are an industry professional looking to hire a skilled artist, this may be what you're looking for. I regret buying this book.
I should have read the review's of the book first !!.......2006-05-08
The Book is just a info commercial at best, almost no tech help.
Don't Purchase.......2005-07-06
I flipped through the book and saw some nice imagry and thought it might have some good tutorials on the CD-ROM. Was I wrong, this book teaches nothing...it informs the reader of how cool it is to combine Photoshop and Maya and stops right there. I don't know how this book was published with maya on the title.
Sorry but I cannot recommend it.......2004-08-25
I am used to buy a lot of good books from Amazon, but this time I had bought this book without waiting for other opinion about, so I think I have to inform that this book is really useless if you are looking for ideas or tutorial regarding integration between the two programs. Really a basic level targeted book, with nothing useful for intermediate/advanced users.
Not happy.......2004-07-29
I really thought this book would show techniques in using both programs. There is pretty much only two tutorials (Chapter 2 and 3) throughout the book. The rest of the 8 chapters shows case studies and gives long bios of the people that created the work. If you are looking to really learn hands on techniques this is not the book. The CD is horrible, there are only two chapter folders that have scene files. The CD also contains a corny little quicktime movie of Alanis Morisette's video. Get the book used if you must have it.
Book Description
From the 1920s to the 1950s, a small but useful advertising gimmick spread like wildfire into the purses, pockets, and kitchen drawers of millions of Americans. The give-away matchbook was one of the most pervasive means ever found of putting promotional images into the hands of the public. Small and disposable, matchbooks were not only a highly successful marketing tool for a wide variety of products, they were also the repositories for a wealth of anonymous design creativity. Fantasies of ocean travel, bathing beauties, regal leisure, and tropical locales adorned the covers, as did hand-lettered typography, stylized illustration, and eye-catching color. This red-hot celebration brings the ubiquitous matchbook's art to life in all its pulp panache and visual zing.

A leaden golden age look.......2007-04-18
As the back cover says 'Striking Images is a must see collection of vintage covers...More than 500 images inside!' Good enough for me because I love books about popular visual culture and this one could join the other three I already have about match art.
However I was rather disappointed in the book because of its production. The main problem is that every matchbook has been reduced to a square of either the front or back and then presented butted up (mostly) four to a page so they hardly look like matchbooks at all. It's as if a book about stamps had all the perforations cut off and then joined together. Many are shown whole page, making them too big and over-emphasising the crude printing quality. The book really ends up looking like a collection of badly printed, colorful and exuberant, advertising graphics. Though divided into eight sections there are no page numbers except on the chapter openers and with the covers crammed into all the pages it is annoyingly difficult to find a particular section.
It could have looked so much better like the earlier Chronicle Matchbook Art by Yosh Kashiwabara. Here many of the matchbooks have their front and back shown but the main thing is that they have plenty of page space surrounding each one. Another book: Close Cover Before Striking: The Golden Age of Matchcover Art (Recollectibles) is a handsomely designed title with thirteen chapters of well presented covers. Both books show how fascinating these throw-way bits of art are.

A Treat For The Eyes.......2006-05-25
Even if you don't care about matchbook art or matchbook collecting, this book is highly recommended. It collects these beautiful pieces of pop culture ephemera and presents them as art, which they truly are. Each page packs a graphic punch that will knock your socks off. Not only are the endless variety of matchbook designs visually stunning, but Mr. Beauchamp treats the medium itself as part of the piece, enlarging the images so the texture of the paper and even the impression the ink makes become art. A very tasteful and classy treatment for this disposable art form. (I was going to say "unmatched" but I stopped myself.)
The selected artworks run the gamut from restaurants to mascot characters to cars to strip clubs. There's a whole chapter devoted to inspiring, art deco imagery from World War II, any one of which would make a great poster.
Given the limitations of the medium and the printing budget, many of the matchbooks are designed with just two or three colors, making this a textbook for the graphics arts student. In an era in which any ink jet printer can reproduce millions of colors, it's fascinating to see what yesterday's artisans did with such a limited palette.
Some of the matchbook covers are close to actual size while others are blown up to fill the page. Given that there are as many as four pictures on some pages and the book totals 272 pages, there are in excess of 500 pieces of art reproduced here. It's impossible to find a favorite among so many gems.
If you're looking for a good summer book to enjoy at the beach, prepare yourself to read "Close cover before striking" a few hundred times. But if you want to soak your eyeballs in America's rich graphic heritage, Striking Images is a must have.

An Educational, Though Somewhat Biased, Account Of American Economic History.......2007-04-23
Gordon's intent is to present an accessible yet highly informative history of American business and in this effort he largely succeeds. I especially enjoyed this book because I have a strong interest in American history but am far from an expert in economics matters. Yet Gordon was able to educate me on issues such as the gold standard vs free silver debate of the late 19th century. He writes in a clear, simple prose that enables potentially complicated subjects to become more understandable to the lay reader. Basically, I learned more from this book than any other I have read so far this year.
But Gordon is a pro-business conservative and his writings are clearly a celebration of America's financial and technological truimphs without much interest in the shortcomings of our especially "individualistic" form of capitalism. For example, he hardly mentions the environmental degradation often caused by unregulated business practices or the extreme inequalities of wealth and poverty that exist in our nation.
Still Gordon is far from a dogmatic thinker and he does provide criticism about the excesses of unregulated capitalism when he considers it appropriate. For example, he makes a convincing case that Andrew Jackson's decision to close the central bank was a disaster that led to numerous financial panics and economic downturns until the establishment of the Federal Reserve System in 1913.
Yes, Gordon is a bit biased and perhaps too celebratory about the virtues of American business. But still the book is very well written and offers so much useful knowledge that it deserves to be read.
You will not find a more readable or entertaining book on U.S. Economic History.......2007-04-23
An Empire of Wealth - The Epic History of American Economic Power, by John Steele Gordon, is a marvelous one volume narrative on the economic history of the United States. While Gordon's work is clearly not ground breaking in terms of research, he synthesizes four hundred years of progress into a very readable and even entertaining book. Writing anything on this topic in such a fashion is clearly a challenge and one the author certainly aces.
Gordon writes about the root causes and pivotal events, inventions and American ingenuity that propelled the economy upward. He also handles the precipitants of economic downturns and depressions very concisely. His ability to put into context many statistics is something that more academic writers could learn from. The book is loaded with "gems". Include are: "Considered as a `public work,' the GI Bill proved to be the Erie Canal of the new, postindustrial economy that was then, quite unrecognized, coming into being". On capitalism and industry (with specific regard to Standard Oil), "Monopolies, like everyone else, want to maximize their profits, not their prices. Lower prices, which increase demand, and increased efficiency, which cuts costs, is usually the best way to achieve the highest possible profits". Gordon also handles the political aspects of all periods very well with valid criticisms of Jefferson and Jackson and insightful writing on Hoover, Roosevelt and Reagan. While he is obviously a free market thinker it does not cloud his reasoning about the need for a central bank, missing after Jackson disbanded the Bank of the United States. He also notes Keynes "General Theory" and the role for government spending in a depressed economy.
The reader is given a bibliography of some great books about American history that, while largely not academic in nature, are intellectually stimulating and allow for further reading on a topic that perhaps was covered in this book in less detail than might have been desired. This is a very well written and fascinating read. If a reader has any interest at all in this topic, it is very much a must read.
Engrossing and thorough.......2007-04-05
This is a marvelous history book which I enjoyed a lot. Besides,it is beautifully written and never dull. By reading this book, I was able to fathom America's economic might. Amid praise, I have to say that I object certain comments made throughout the book by Mr. Gordon because, more than fact, they seem to convey his bias as a deeply conservative thinker. Nevertheless, the story that evolves through the pages of this book is truly an epic. This book manages to be informative and entertaining at the same time. The book itself is easy to read (close to double space between lines) and has a handsome cover. I am looking forward to read other books authored by Mr. Gordon.
One of my Favorite authors.......2007-02-06
One of my favorite books I read was "The Great Game" by John Steele Gordon
which is the reason why I bought this book, it was very informative but it got me upset a lot for some reason that I haven't been able to identify yet
I had to quit reading it with 75 pages left
It would be a great book if I were a Capitalist which I am not, I think I got really angry because I was reading about how Capitalism really is I did learn a lot about my country though which is more saddening than anything though
1. money-stock market and corporations
2. beauty-Hollywood and whores
A must-buy for any amateur historian.......2006-12-27
Exciting. Filled with stunning statistics meshed with lively interpretations and many surprises. This book is really a survey of American history, but from one perspective: the development of America's capital wealth and influence. What is fascinating is that this string of events that made the USA what is is were largely unrelated. Stuff just happened, although sometimes one need prompted an opportunity or solution. No grand plan drove the events, inventions, improvements, developments. They happened because of the relationship of need, opportunity, and free enterprise.
This book should be in every historian's library. Do yourself a favor and get it. I thank Gordon for a wonderful book.
