My Heavens!: The Adventures of a Lonely Stargazer Building an Over-the-Top Observatory (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
Gordon Rogers Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0387737812 |
Book Description
My Heavens! charts the progress of the author’s own substantial observatory (with additional material from amateur constructors of large observatories elsewhere) from conception, through design, planning and construction, to using an observatory of the kind that all amateur astronomers would aspire to own.
This book tells the “warts and all” story of small beginnings in amateur astronomy, leading to the construction of a "top of the range" observatory at a house on the edge of a country village between Oxford and London. The author is a qualified building surveyor, and looks at building the observatory from his own professional perspective. There were of course many errors, problems, technical and organizational difficulties along the way, and the author never shies away from admitting his mistakes – and in doing so he reduces the chances of others falling into the same traps Comparisons are made with similar large projects in the USA, taking a look at the differences and similarities in planning and building regulations, and in construction methods on both sides of the Atlantic.
Eventually an observatory materializes, set up to facilitate the taking of very high quality images of the deep sky on those special days of best seeing.
The story doesn’t end with the constriction of the observatory, but goes on to describe the author’s choice of equipment, setting it up, and his own techniques for obtaining superb astronomical images like the ones he shows in his book.

The Encyclopedia of the British Press, 1422-1992
Manufacturer: Palgrave Macmillan ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0312086334 |
Book Description
The Encyclopedia of the British Press is a long awaited reference book, invaluable for journalists, historians and anyone interested in the history of newspapers. It contains biographies of editors, journalists, press magnates and other people with a formative influence on the British Press since 1422. Together they form a rich archive with entries covering a wide range of people: famous newspaper dynasties such as the Aitkens, Berrys and Harmsworths; newspaper giants, such as Caxton, and Daniel Defoe, regarded by many as the "father of English journalism"; and at the other end of the spectrum low-life characters such as the nineteenth century editor, Charles Westmacott, who used his paper as a vehicle for blackmail, and Henry Bate, known as the 'fighting parson' for the duels he fought whilst editor of the Morning Post. Entries on newspapers include all the present nationals and regionals, as well as many historical papers, such as the Pall Mall Gazette, North Briton, Daily Courant, Charles Dickens' Household Words and The Review, launched in 1713, which was the first paper to offer opinion on political affairs - the forerunner of modern editorials. The encyclopedia opens with a series of six definitive essays charting the long and chequered career of the British Press from 1476 when William Caxton set up the first press in Westminster, and his apprentice Wynkyn de Worde started the first printing business in Fleet Street.

The same motives as Scheherazade.......2003-01-19
Robert Glennon, a professor of law at the University of Arizona, James E. Rogers College of Law, wants to draw our attention to invisible water, and to the question how we might best avoid either polluting or running out of it.
Early on, he tells the story of Ubar, a city of ancient Arabia, an oasis for the camel caravans of its time, and a place of fabulous wealth. Scheherazade spoke of Ubar in one of her thousand-and-one tales, as did countless bedouins around countless campfires. It became an Arabian Sodom, reputedly destroyed at the peak of its splendor by an angry God. What Glennon adds is that Ubar (in what we now call Oman) was a very real place.
In the 1980s, an amateur archeologist, Nicholas Clapp, led an expedition that successfully located and unearthed the fortress that had once guarded the precious spring-fed well that had made the city a port of call for those desert-crossing voyagers. It now appears that sometime between 300 and 500 AD, Ubar simply fell. It collapsed of its own weight, into a huge underground limestone cavern - the cavern that its wells had progressively emptied of water. The groundwater had held the city up, physically as well as fiscally. So Ubar, having exended its capital, sank out of sight, and entered legend as the "Atlantis of the desert" (T.E. Lawrence's phrase.)
Glennon tells this story for the same three reasons that Scheherazade did: to charm, to instruct, to survive.
