Dean graduating.......2006-02-18
Magnetic Strom continues the record started in "Views," documenting the ongoing work of Roger and Martyn Dean. There's lots of Roger's famous artwork, album covers for Yes, Asia, and others. This also features the stage sets for Yes tours - amazing fantasy constructions, even more amazing for the rigorous demands imposed by the need for easy transportation and setup. It even shows some of the Deans' experiments in biomorphic architecture. There are also some covers from books that the Deans' Paper Tiger published, including some that I still enjoy.
This collection appeals to anyone who remembers those times, who enjoys fantasy art, or who likes to see the breadth that creative minds can span. Enjoy!

More From Roger and Martyn; Needs a Reprint!.......2001-10-23
The Dean brothers are 2 of the most innovative artists of the 20th century. Roger has designed many of Yes and Asia's album covers (Drama, Yesshows, Asia, and Alpha are all featured in this book!), designed tour posters and booklets for other major rock bands and contributed on the Album Cover Album books. His brother Martyn has designed many of Yes' stage sets (Topographic Oceans, Drama, and Relayer) and has acted as Yes' photographer both for album shots and on tour. Together and seperately, Roger and Martyn have also worked on animation, video games, architecture, and an invention of Martyn's which is called a retreat pod (sort of like a futuristic sleeping bag with the options of an entertainment center!). I'd like to see this gem back in print and see a 3rd volume where Roger and Martyn have left off since this was published.
See into the eye of the magnetic storm...........2001-10-13
Creating a sucessor to VIEWS is a hard enough concept, but Roger Dean has produced another master document of his work. Following along the same path as his first book, again we get the album size/shape presentation and tons of full color reproductins of Dean's sketches and renderings. This book was the first whereby I truly grasped Dean's illustrations as architechtural renderings, as lots of the projects covered in this volume are 3D projects worked on with his brother Martyn: built YES stages, modelling retreat pods and designing home and buildings. Imagine a YES album cover as a dwelling, and grab this book to show you how and why it is possible. Stunning follow-up, fantastic production values not seen often in modern paperbacks.
Pure Genius.......2000-05-31
A blend of many different art forms, they combine architecture, fantasy art, music. How can two men be able to design for all areas of life. Read this book to find out. I have owned a copy for fifteen years and still find something new each time.
Creative genius with color pictures!.......1998-07-14
I have owned this book ( I hope it's the same one! ) since 1986. The pub date on this book says 1984, so the one you're reading about may be different....?
Having grown up listening to the music of Yes, and staring with fascination at the jacket art, this book was literally snatched up as soon as I saw it!
These two brothers are so creative and talented together as well a indivdually that I found it hard to read the text, rather that just look at the pictures!
This is definately a must have "coffee table book"!

Book Description
The highly variable conditions in the Earth-related space environment, including the Sun, the interplanetary medium and the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere-atmosphere system, are collectively known as space weather. In the recent past we have experienced that space weather influences the performance and reliability of space- and ground-based technological systems. Although several technological impacts of space weather had been known for some time, it was not before the 1990s that their significance increased dramatically and their severity became apparent. Furthermore, an increasing susceptibility of spacecraft systems to space weather disturbances has been noticed, presumably due to "softer" designs of electronic components, reduction in subsystem sizes, and increases in performance demands. On the ground side, previously unidentified effects of space weather on power grids have been discovered recently.
The 17 chapters of this book provide an update of the existing knowledge on dynamic physical processes at the Sun, the interplanetary space and the geospace, as well as thorough reviews of the major mechanisms in which space weather disturbances influence technological systems. The book moreover reports recent advances in monitoring and predicting space weather and its impacts on technology systems and introduces new tools and methods for accurate predictions of space weather disturbances.
Target audience:
researchers, teachers and students in space physics and space-related engineering, electric power and space communication technology community, astronomers, non-specialist physicists and engineers.
Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A043333. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The electrodeposition of cobalt, iron, antimony, and their aluminum alloys was investigated in the room-temperature molten salt, aluminum chloride 1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium chloride (A1Cl3-MeEtimCl). Solutions of Co(II), Fe(II), and Sb(III) were prepared by controlled-potential coulometric anodization of the respective metal in Lewis acidic melt. The plating and stripping of these metals was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, rotating disk and rotating ring-disk electrode voltammetry, controlled potential coulometry, and potential step chronoamperometry. Bulk deposits of the pure and aluminum-alloyed metals were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction methods.

requires patience but a good intro.......2005-06-11
Being a collection of essays by writers of varying talent, this book is not what you'd call a page-turner, unless you have a healthy curiosity about sun-earth physics. I found it a very useful introduction to the field, and plan to use it to guide undergraduate research (I'm a physicist with a doctorate, teaching at an institution with an undergraduate physics program.)The authors have avoided the use of equations, and for me that was a drawback, but for undergrads or laymen, it might be helpful. Lots of very interesting physics here.

Customer Reviews:
Not all That bad!.......2007-09-23
Though, I agree with Eileen's review on some points, I disagree that this is an essentially worthless book. If for nothing else it gets beginners and/or other "blocked" artists painting at least Something! I enjoyed this book and going through the exercises as Practice when I started taking up painting again. At the price this book is going for now on amazon, you can't beat it.
Not helpful at all.......2006-02-25
Such a shame - very seldom do I end up buying a book as poor as this one! Besides having awful art work to go by, the instructiveness is not very good. I suppose if you like quick, childlike sketches, this would be interesting, but it didn't do it for me. If I hadn't waited so long, I would return it.
Disappointing.......2005-12-07
I had really looked forward to getting this book in the mail. But I have just finished reading the book and I am very disappointed. The author shows you how she painted 10 different paintings. And while that sounds good, it somehow didn't work to help to teach you how to paint on your own. To begin, most of the paintings are explained in about 6 short steps. I appreciate that the author wanted to keep the copy part brief, but it is of course impossible to really understand and paint a picture in 6 brief steps. And the author never really outlines strong principles behind what is happening, so you end up feeling that MAYBE you could paint the picture in that she demonstrated, but you are not really given enough to walk away and paint your own painting. In addition, I am assuming that the book expects you to learn by actually painting the examples and "following along". And yet the book does not provide a photograph of the scene to be painted; so that you could look and make choices for yourself. Instead you must follow just what the author did, which feels very juvenile. I would prefer to learn by making some of my own choices, instead of doing an exact copy of someone else's painting. And in fact before the author even starts the book's lessons, she provides a big fat copyright warning that states that if you choose to "follow along" and paint any of the paintings in the book, that you are not allowed to sign the painting or show the painting anywhere. Which seems a bit cheeky, given that this is the only thing you get out of this book...
If you really want to learn how to paint with oils, my suggestion would be to buy the book Painting the Impressionist Landscape by Lois Griffel. When I finished that book, I was so inspired, and my painting ability dramatically improved from that day forward.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointment, not what I expect........2001-12-08
Okay, here I am buying Carson Graves book on printing because earlier I bought his book on Zone system. Using previous book as prerequisite for this one, was way wrong. If you ever decide to buy some literature based on previous successes, think again. The one thing that I dislike very much about this book is a fact that author teach you to use numerous testing techniques without actually showing you enough picture examples of how given toning or bleaching changed the image. Of course, there are several photographs for illustration-but it's way too little for photography book. Photography book must have more than less pictures in order to show what author mean when he uses one or another alternation. It's like learning astronomy with books without ever looking at night sky. If author would use more illustrations I would give him more stars.
Excellent for beginners and advanced printers.Very practical.......1998-02-05
Although this is a basic book, it covers several topics that advanced darkroom printers will find useful. For example it discusses making test strips by exposing for the HIGHLIGHTS. I've used the method and have adopted it. I'm also experimenting with split-filter exposures which it discusses very completely and it has been very helpful. Worth the money -- I've learned several new techniques.

Book Description
He calls himself Bogie, and he's pounding the pavement of Glasgow in search of the legendary Black Bird, one step ahead of the Fat Man and his gang of hardened killers. There's one problem, though: the Bogie Man is actually escaped mental patient Francis Forbes Clunie, and his hard-boiled adversaries are really law-abiding citizens who are cleaner than a kilt on laundry day. But a little thing like reality won't stop the Bogie Man from getting what he wants -- or hanging his imaginary enemies out to dry.
This volume collects both novel-length adventures of this English cult classic for the first time anywhere. The Bogie Man was also produced as a BBC film featuring Robbie Coltrane, the star of the popular "Cracker" television series.

Helped ME pass the test........2004-10-26
This is an excellent general introduction to the principles of California real estate. I passed the broker's exam on the first try with no experience as a real estate salesperson and no cram course. This book was a great help in preparing for it. A large percentage of the test questions deal with the principles covered in this book.
Horrible explanations.......2003-01-28
This book is not a very in-depth book on the principles of california real estate. It covered topics only very breifly, and really sped through them with not a whole lot of explanation. I would highly advise buying a different book if you intend to pass the CA Real Estate Licensing Exam.
