The city of New York hosts some of the most memorable skyscrapers in the world: for those unable to personally visit, Manhattan Skyscrapers provides a newly revised, expanded edition to present over eighty of the best of Manhattan's skyscrapers. Though full-page color portraits of each are packed into each feature, equally striking is the blend of historical background, architectural insight and details Nash provides in each accompanying description. A 'then and now' feel is created by the color contemporary photo facing a page of vintage or black and white illustration. Highly recommended for any fan of Manhattan or urban architectural style.

For all who love New York...........2005-10-12

"Manhattan Skyscrapers", a book first offered in 1999, has been updated since 9/11, but the central thrust remains......there is no other place on earth that gives us so many tall buildings on such small parcels of land. As one who has worked at the Empire State Building for a dozen years, "Manhattan Skyscrapers" makes me want to see as many of these wonders as I can.

This is a coffee table book to be sure, but that doesn't take anything away from the richness of Norman McGrath's often stunning photographs and the accompanying descriptions by author Eric P. Nash. Beginning with the 1896 American Tract Society Building (hardly a skyscraper by today's standards) the reader is treated to a chronological trip up and down Manhattan. There are many old black and white photos that are included, giving us a perspective on how the city has evolved architecturally. (Yes, there is a section on the twin towers, as there should be)

I was particularly enamored of the older buildings, especially the Flatiron Building (1902) with its one-of-a-kind design but the newer buildings, such as Citicorp Center, the W.R. Grace Building and the oddly suggestive Lipstick Building also warrant attention. Having viewed the outside of these marvels of creation it would be nice to see a book about the interiors of some of them.....the lobby of the Empire State Building, for one.

Nash and McGrath have compiled a gem of a book. I encourage readers to have a look and take your time with it. It's worth every page turn.

Definitely for beginners.......2005-07-27

The book is well written and has great illustrations and especially good information on products for the beginner. It really shows how much fun textile surface design can be however I must stress that if you have done much work with surface design at all, this book will not be very challenging. It is a great book for beginners!.

What a lot of great ideas in this book. The instructions were easy to follow, and the designs were so beautiful. I am just a beginner with designing for my home, but with this book I know I can do it. Thanks for the wonderful book.

CREATIVE ACRYLIC PAINTING TECHNIQUES begin with working out composition, color study and theme, quality of light, painting atmosphere, and textural possibilities. They need no more than 1-2 textural techniques and a palette of no more than 4-5 colors for compositional unity and picture harmony. They can include Georges Seurat's pointillist technique: irregular dots of unmixed color dry fast into vibrant color effects; and tiny amounts of different colors make for more realistic rushing water, which looks white but has all the colors of the rainbow. They also draw on many layers of thin glazes to give a painting the depth and surface-reflected light of water, or to build up the subtly graded flesh tones for painting translucent skin. They even break color into irregular patches with a wallpaper roller, spatter the sea into frothy waves with a toothbrush and water into running parallel lines, sponge churning and trapped water into steaming foam, and curve or straighten lines of grass with a credit or phone card. In the end, the book's clear step-by-step illustrations and text leave readers all set for Earl Grenville Killeen's THE NORTH LIGHT BOOK OF ACRYLIC PAINTING TECHNIQUES and Rachel Rubin Wolfe's THE ACRYLIC PAINTER'S BOOK OF STYLES AND TECHNIQUES.

This memoir by Dai Qing, China's best-known investigative journalist, offers insight into the mental and physical tribulations that accompany imprisonment by an authoritarian government devoted to squeezing out "confessions" of wrongdoing by its political opponents. Written in the early 1990s during her incarceration in Beijing's notorious Qingcheng prison, this is a mournful and courageous document about her struggle with the travails of imprisonment for unstated "crimes" following the 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square.

Along with personal letters to her family and descriptions of her cell and the numbing routine of prison life, this book contains verbatim translations of Dai's forced "confessions" to her jailers and the top political authorities in China. At times quite unflattering to the author, these documents show how difficult it was to stand up and explain away her actions during the hectic months from April to June 1989 when she and other intellectuals tried to stave off a confrontation between the government and the students occupying Tiananmen. Against the government's claim that a widespread "conspiracy" existed to overthrow the regime, of which Dai was a purported central figure, her confessions are a marvelous example of just how difficult it is to exculpate oneself from a political apparatus that marshals enormous evidence that paints any person's actions as "conspiratorial" and "anti-Party." Despite her obvious innocence, Dai gets caught in the web of accusations that all prosecutors bring to any person's actions that are under "investigation": She finds that escape is nearly impossible, and so begins to accept the government's view on certain matters, ending up fingering others in a manner that suggests previous collaborationist actions in China, the Soviet Union, and the West (the McCarthy hearings, for example) when an individual is isolated by political authorities bent on condemning its detractors.

Prison Memoirs and Other Writings remains witty and filled with vivid descriptions of the absurdities of political imprisonment in any system. It is the final chapter in Dai Qing's transformation from a beneficiary of the regime to one of its victims.
