Book Description
Through a series of close readings of two major figures of the modern movement, Adolf Loos and Le Corbusier, Beatriz Colomina argues that architecture only becomes modern in its engagement with the mass media, and that in so doing it radically displaces the traditional sense of space and subjectivity.
Privacy and Publicity boldly questions certain ideological assumptions underlying the received view of modern architecture and reconsiders the methodology of architectural criticism itself. Where conventional criticism portrays modern architecture as a high artistic practice in opposition to mass culture, Colomina sees the emerging systems of communication that have come to define twentieth-century culture -- the mass media -- as the true site within which modern architecture was produced. She considers architectural discourse as the intersection of a number of systems of representation such as drawings, models, photographs, books, films, and advertisements. This does not mean abandoning the architectural object, the building, but rather looking at it in a different way. The building is understood here in the same way as all the media that frame it, as a mechanism of representation in its own right.
With modernity, the site of architectural production literally moved from the street into photographs, films, publications, and exhibitions -- a displacement that presupposes a new sense of space, one defined by images rather than walls. This age of publicity corresponds to a transformation in the status of the private, Colomina argues; modernity is actually the publicity of the private. Modern architecture renegotiates the traditional relationship between public and private in a way that profoundly alters the experience of space. In a fascinating intellectual journey, Colomina tracks this shift through the modern incarnations of the archive, the city, fashion, war, sexuality, advertising, the window, and the museum, finally concentrating on the domestic interior that constructs the modern subject it appears merely to house.
Customer Reviews:
Every designer should read this.......2005-09-19
The best way, somtimes, to talk about a larger condition is to delve into specifics. Colomina uses Loos and Corbusier to draw out comparisons about the use of information.
Considering the amount of architectural monographs being churned out on a daily basis, and the creation of terms such as "information architecture," it's extremely valuable to look at how modern architecture might have started from an alliance between types of publicity and design.
Both Loos and Corbusier come out, biography-wise, as extremely creepy, though shrewd in shaping how their work is percieved by the traces that they leave behind. In Corbusier's case, he leaves an archive stuffed with minutia, an overabundance of information to supplement the built work. Loos, on the other hand, leaves very little, and thus what little remains of his work requires imagination to fill gaps in his story. What a designer can gather from this is to ask the question: how does what we do effect what our work is? Colomina's work functions reflexively as well as she works from "evidence" to create representations of both architects.
It is a compelling argument, passionately written, and not the least boring.

Book Description
If you're ready for an Elements 3 book that breaks all the rules, this is it, because it does something for digital photographers that's never been done before--it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly "how to do it." It tells you, flat-out, which settings to use, when to use them, and why.
This book is not a bunch of theory; it doesn't challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure things out on your own. It gives you the same settings used by some of the top digital pros, settings you can use today to get professional results you've always dreamed of.
Plus, since this book is designed for photographers, it doesn't waste your time talking about how to frame a shot, setting your exposure, etc. and there's no talk which camera or printer to buy. It's all Elements, step-by-step, cover-to-cover in the only book of its kind, and you're gonna love it!
Besides learning the inside tips and the tricks of the trade for correcting, editing, sharpening, retouching, and presenting your photos like a pro. You'll learn how to unlock the power of all the new Elements 3 features, including how to manage your photos using the new Organizer, how to use the new "pro tools" like the Healing Brush and the Shadow/Highlight controls, and how to master the new "Creation" section to take your photos to an entirely new level. Plus, you'll see it all step-by-step, in plain English, and you'll be absolutely amazed at how easy and effective these techniques are, once you know the secrets.
You'll learn:
- The secrets of how the pros retouch portraits
- How to incorporate the amazing new features of Elements 3 into your work today!
- How to color correct any photo without breaking a sweat (you'll be amazed at how they do it!)
- How to repair and restore damaged photos
- The sharpening techniques the pros really use (there's an entire chapter just on this!)
- Dealing with common digital camera image problems, including removing noise and avoiding halos
- When to use Quick Fix, and when to do to it yourself (using our step-by-step methods).
- The most-requested photographic special effects
- and much more!
But besides all that, this book has a "secret weapon" that makes it the most important, most useful Elements book yet. The reason is this--although Elements 3 offers some digital photography features Photoshop CS doesn't offer, there are plenty of features that Photoshop CS has, that Elements 3 still doesn't have (things like Layer Masking, Channel Mixer, etc.). But in this book, you'll learn some slick workarounds, cheats, and some fairly ingenious ways to replicate many of those Photoshop features from right within Elements.
There's never been a book like it, and if you're a digital photographer using Photoshop Elements 3, this is the book you've been waiting for.

Love this book--Mac user.......2007-09-29
Even though I use a Mac and this book was written for Windows users, most of it can be applied to the Mac platform also. Mac users can skip the Organizer section; we have iPhoto and don't need the Elements Organizer anyway. We Mac users also must make a few adjustments; for example when told to use the Control key, we use the Apple Command key.
I'd already taught myself how to use several of the features in Elements 3, but since buying this book, I've become amazed at the many marvels of this program that I hadn't yet discovered. Kelby gives specific easy to follow instructions.
Still, it would be great if more was written for the Mac. There are many of us loyal Mac users out there, who aren't about to give up our wonderful Macs.

Photoshop Elements 3 Book For Digital Photographers (Voices).......2007-06-13
This has been very helpful in learning how to use the PSE3 program... I'm still working with it but to this point I would recommend to anyone...
Fantastic Instructional Book.......2007-04-05
I would recommend this book to the person who doesn't like to read a lot of verbiage. This book states the facts one one side of the page while illustrating the screen shot on the other side of the same page. I found it most helpful and easy reading. It also helps you up front and first with organizing folders and saving files to folders - doesn't jump right in and starts on edit instruction. As I believe organization is the most difficult part of Photoshop to learn, I liked being walked thru the steps.
Sadly, a Disappointment.......2006-06-15
If you hate theory, you will love this book. The author makes certain that you do not glean any insights into how Elements 3 works. If you want to crack this book open each time you use Elements, and follow the button-clicking instructions, you will always be on Square One, if that is what you like. For instance, Layers are never described or explained. There is no chapter on Layers. No mention of Layers, the Layers Palette, or Backgrounds, until: "Make a copy of the photo by dragging-and-dropping your Background Layer on the Create a New Layer icon at the top of the Layers palette. This will create a layer titled "Background Copy." No definition of any of these terms has appeared, and presto, you are supposed to know what he is talking about.
Also, if you love chattiness, talk on peripheral subjects, and silly, irrelevant humor, this is definitly your book. Remember: no theory in this book! No why, no because, no overview, just do this and do that. Definitely not my cup of tea.
Scott Kelby is My Favorite Photoshop Author.......2006-06-05
First a confession! Scott Kelby is my favorite Photoshop author/DVD presenter. (Eat your heart out Deke McClelland, my second choice!)
Now that that's out of the way, this is not just another Elements replacement manual, making up for Adobe's lack of one. What is different about this book is that Kelby writes in a thoroughly enjoyable and easy to understand style as he opens each chapter with a small farce and then in real time proceeds to take you step by step through one or another of those work flows needed to correct or enhance an image into something worth keeping. As Kelby says in the "Read This First" chapter (Introduction, by another name), "... I tried not to put things in this book that are already in every other Photoshop book out there."
The book covers work flow from Organizer to Editor, fixes for all the usual image defects or enhancements and output procedures for print, slideshow, e-mail and website. There is no CD with the book, but in a practice that appears to be gaining acceptance in this type of book, the images used in the book are available at the author's website.
I enjoyed using this book to improve my own limited Elements (and Photoshop) skills. There are just enough basics within his procedures in the book for Newbies to learn their basic skills and enough advanced editing for experienced editors to enjoy. I recommend this book. (Reviewed by MiltK)

Customer Reviews:
A solid intro to Elements for traditional photographers.......2005-04-18
A solid introduction to Photoshop Elements 3 that will appeal to photographers moving from traditional film and darkroom printing to digital photography. While this book doesn't venture too far into 'advanced' techniques, and doesn't explore the 'hidden features' mentioned in some other Elements guides, it does cover all the essentials and includes some useful tips and techniques. Comparisons with film camera and darkroom techniques will appeal to traditional photographers.
If you're new to Elements, this guide will give you a thorough grounding, but if you've been using Elements for some time and are looking for more advanced techniques then you'll probably find another book more interesting.

YEAH, I KNOW!.......2001-03-17
This book had me cracking up laughing. Beetle Bailey is truly one of the FUNNIEST comic strips in creation! I love the Sarge baiting, work dodging jokemonger! The assorted characters at Camp Swampy will certainly leave you laughing. Even though you already KNOW our favorite private will get the best of Sarge, you still can't help rooting for that lovable, crusty officer who has his challenges in trying to rein in the enlisted men at Camp Swampy! Sarge and his ubiquitous bull dog Otto really run that place. Lt. Fuzz is a lovable toady, Gen. Half-Track a figurehead, Lt. Flap a suave and serious officer, Zero, the bumbling rube aptly named for his I.Q., Rocky, the resident rebel, Plato, the intellectual, Cookie, the army cook and of course Chaplain Stateglass to name a few!
Beetle Bailey is sure to crack up his readers laughing. I have loved this strip since I was a child. It is VERY funny!
Another good selection of Beetle.......2000-08-19
This is another good selection of Beetle Bailey strips that is sure to please any fan.

Book Description
Bonds are the financial Cinderellas of the new millennium. Investors became aware of their charms when they saw their stock portfolios tanking while bonds were delivering double-digit returns. With the discovery that bonds could be a lucrative as well as a safe investment came a major problem: no single source of easily accessible information has been available that uniformly describes bonds, compares their relative strengths and drawbacks, and tells how to select and profit from buying them -- until now.
Registered investment advisers Hildy and Stan Richelson have written The Money-Making Guide to Bonds to serve as this solid and thorough, yet user-friendly, resource on the subject. Over 35 different types of bonds and 20 types of bond funds are described, highlighting the specific advantages, risks, and tax implications of each.
The stock market decline clearly demonstrated to investors that bonds belong in every portfolio. The Money-Making Guide to Bonds not only gives readers the information they need to select bonds suited to their needs but also tells them how to allocate bonds within a portfolio and then concludes with specific strategies for reducing taxes and increasing income.
Customer Reviews:
Bonds finally make sense! Thank you!.......2003-10-27
I had always read about the importance of including bonds in your portfolio--in both bear and bull markets--but I could never get a handle on all the different types available. Thank goodness for this book. I now know the difference between muni bonds and U.S. savings bonds, and why bond funds may not be the best route to diversification. I strongly recommend this to anyone looking to safeguard their portfolio and profit!
A useful and practical guide to an informed investment.......2003-10-19
Co-written by recognized bond adviser and financial author Hildy Richelson and fee-only financial planner, attorney and coach Stan Richelson, The Money-Making Guide To Bonds: Straightforward Strategies For Picking The Right Bonds And Bond Funds is a useful and practical guide to an informed investment in the bond market. Presented in a direct, no-nonsense tone which is thoroughly accessible to readers of all financial backgrounds, the individual chapters discuss over 35 different types of bonds in detail, complete with their specific advantages and disadvantages, as well as tax issues, ways to protect oneself from risks, how to make the best use of online resources, and more. Though The Money-Making Guide To Bonds cannot replace professional advice or judgement, it is a "must-read" for non-specialist general readers seeking familiarize themselves with the complex bond market before seeing a financial expert who bills by the hour.
Great guide to bonds - and to help balance my portfolio.......2003-10-10
Stocks, stocks, stocks, IPOs, stocks. Like too many people, I paid too much attention to equities and too little to other investments. I read over and over about creating a balanced portfolio and did - but only to a degree and without paying much attention to the less glamorous parts of my investments. I paid a price when the bubble burst. This book is very helpful to helping understand bonds of various types and how to use them. The authors are clear and unafraid to be be opinionated. I recommend this highly.
Elementary Book on Bonds.......2003-07-27
While The Money Making Guide to Bonds is well written, it is designed for the novice. For example, the book has a very general discussion of duration with no mathematics. Moreover, convexity is not discussed at all. The authors are enthusiastic about bonds but do not give enough attention to the inflation risk of owning bonds.
