A great mentor for graphic designers.......2007-06-16
If you're ever felt lost, started hating what you do, or ever thought about quitting the graphic design business altogether, then this book may help you to rethink and resurrect your career. Each chapter focuses on significant career issues that designers are often confronted with via examples of real life stories and meaningful advice.
great inspiration!.......2006-06-05
I absolutely loved this book! It was a great insight into the lives of working graphic designers and the struggles they go thru to get to the top. I found a ton of inspirational quotes that can really be helpful when stuck in a slump. its a great book for any student designer or designer that justs want to hear what others of their craft think!
Grossly mistitled..........2006-05-25
This book is not about "how to grow as a graphic designer." It is a group of career biographies of (mostly) graphic designers.
If you've ever picked up a free business magazine, you have read those self-serving articles about so-and-so or company X that has started small and conquered roadblocks to become a business success. The kind of article that reads as though the author has just copied most of the press release handed to them. This book is just one of these after another.
There were no tips, instructions, pointers or other form of guidance in the book, save for the headings of a list provided by a third party. Examples of those pearls of wisdom are "Keep your skills up" and "Don't get too comfortable" - with no valuable description of how one would go about doing so.
The book would still have value if the stories were especially inspirational, or showed how the subjects uniquely overcame obstacles, but it doesn't. It doesn't even show how at all.
I expected a book that would help me find artistic inspiration, show how, who, and why successful graphic artists are inspired and find their ideas, and maybe have some business tips for a fledgling artist. I would have settled for a readable book that was even marginally about "how to grow as a graphic designer." This book fails in both regards.

Book Description
"Hungarian Rhapsody: An Adoption Story" is a heart-warming account of an Indiana couple who set out to adopt a child from an orphanage in Eastern Europe but wouldn't stop until they had brought home six children. Fighting red-tape all the way, Jim and Kim Derk were determined to reunite a split-up family and then keep them together at all costs. A must-read for anyone considering international adoption, this heart-felt book offers much insight into what really happens when Americans head overseas to foreign orphanages.
Customer Reviews:
Wow, what a story.......2007-07-17
What an amazing story this is... an Indiana (or Illinois?) couple with no great income or means goes out and adopts seven kids... I could not put this book down. It is an honest portrayal of one family's story... wow.
A Story of Giving that's Not Over Yet.......2007-02-18
One by one the Derk children capture your hearts as you read James Derk's tale of how a couple of ex-newspaper people expand their family again and again to make sure orphaned siblings in Hungary can grow up in one loving household. A fun mix of narrative and e-mails home to friends and family, Derk's touching account includes tearful goodnight kisses to a lineup of boys in a spare orphanage alongside wry humor at dealing the bureaucracies of both Hungary and the US. A good read that reminds you there are good people in the world, doing generous deeds out of love.
Truly a Hungarian Adoption Odyssey.......2006-11-20
A tale of unbelievable bureauratic battles, tiring travels, great expense, language difficulties, and determined love involved in adopting four Hungarian sibling orphans, followed by two more siblings in later years. A heartwarming story, told with humor, about the children, their dedicated care givers in the Hungarian orphanage, and the determined adopting parents who would not be discouraged by the many obstacles in their path.
If you liked "Daddy Longlegs" you'll love this book.
A page turner.
This Story will Grab You By the Neck and Won't Let You Go.......2006-11-20
Ordered an autographed copy of this book online from the author's site [...] and could not put it down. This odyssey of a pair of Hoosiers involved with international adoption is both hilarious: a car that sounds like a weed-whacker, attempting to withdraw enough money out of a Hungarian ATM, the colorful people lining the main thoroughfare - and heart-breaking: so many kids, so much adoption red-tape, Christmas is petting a bunny taken through the orphanage in a small wagon, orphanage workers doing their best to try and make a home for these children, and the Derks' goodnights to the orphans.
I cannot get the image of the ones left behind out of my head.
There needs to be a sequel. How are the kids doing in school? Were there problems after the kids got to America? How long did it take them to adapt - or was it effortless? How do they feel about their home - is the little boy who liked to put things together and take them apart well on the road to a physics scholarship yet - and are there more sisters or brothers in Hungary?
The parts of this book that are funny are absolutely can't-breathe-for-laughing funny. And the parts that are sad...
A heart-warming story of international adoption.......2006-11-18
This is the amazing story of a midwest couple who adopted four children from Hungary, only to return again to adopt a little boy and then AGAIN to adopt a little girl. That brought the number of children in their household to eight!
Told from the father's perspective with a warm sense of humor, this is a great book for prospective adoptive parents because it tells the real story about what happens when Americans head overseas.
Contains many good tips and advice.

A Work of Art.......2007-09-28
These pieces are real treasures. The print is a little small but clear and readable. Good value.
Hungarian Rhapsodies.......2007-06-23
Firstly, in response to a previous reviewer's comments, the book doesn't really stay open that well within the first few days of use, but once you've folded the book back a couple of times it isn't really a problem.
Also, the print is remarkably clear especially considering the low price, and if you find yourself squinting, perhaps this should be blamed on Liszt's tendancy to squeeze at least a billion notes into each bar :P !
Great binding (contrary to some horror stories I've heard /:), great printing, and Fantastic music.
Recommended.
Horrible edition.......2007-06-13
Sometimes getting a Dover Edition can be a godsend. They're cheap, well-built, and often reproductions of good editions.
But this isn't one of those times. The print is small and the pages are tiny. It does not stay open well at the piano. To be sure, the actual notes are most probably the same as any other, more expensive edition. Nevertheless, most good editions offer large pages and clear, good-sized notation. I suggest the pricier Henle or Peters editions.
As a study score, this is certainly a good choice. But to learn an entire rhapsody from it? I neither feel like squinting nor constantly forcing the book to stay open.
Perfect Edition.......2007-04-20
This book contains all 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies for piano by the great composer Franz Liszt. The book contains great fingerings, and is written in a good format. This does not change the fact that these pieces are some of the hardest to play. Definately not for beginner pianists.
Great buy.......2006-03-10
Very nice book, concise since it has all the hung. rhapsodies of Liszt and very good price (DOVER!). But, I have to point out the notes are smaller than usually and the printing quality is not the best. I would not recommend for people with problematic vision or those who want it for their "perfect" music library.

Fills a niche for Hungarian expats and non-Magyars too.......2003-04-05
Due to the linguistic isolation of Hungarian, its cultural and literary wealth has become trapped in a Slavic and Germanic slurry surrounding its terrain. Teleky, as a Canadian/American third-generation Hungarian, seeks to fit his understanding into the familiar pattern of the ethnic revival of interest among those far removed from their original homeland. As an Irish American myself, I found his searches appealing to me also; the comparisons and contrasts among different sensibilities and the struggles to regain our grasp on difficult ancestral tongues brought his essay on learning Hungarian close to my mental home.
His chapters on stereotypes and Joe Esterhazy's film "The Music Box" I found particularly impressive for their mix of erudition and unforced satirical/incisive commentary. Dismantling the kitsch and tchotkes assembled by expats and Hollywood seems to be a notable skill for Teleky, and makes for his best work here.
For an academic, he writes surprisingly well! That is, his essays aim for the "educated general reader" instead of the professoriate. Always clear, modest, and focusing upon the subject more than himself--even when the subject is himself! Many nationalities feature such essayists seeking to connect themselves back to their roots; Teleky's collection appears to me--as an outsider to this nation's studies--to fill this necessary niche in the Hungarian section of the few English-language studies found on most library or bookstore's cultural shelf. For those of us not able to enter into the Magyar language, Teleky's crossing of the boundary between the Anglophone world and the Hungarian realm shows how valuable that encounter can be. I give this book four, not five, stars only because of personal bias; some of the essays--however clearly conveyed--simply failed to grab me. I doubt, for instance, that after reading Teleky on Peter Esterhazy's daunting post-modern novels I'll rush out to read any. Teleky's promotion of Esterhazy seems a bit half-hearted, as if many of this novelists' tricks dazzle less once his legerdemain has been revealed as imitations of other European literary magicians over the past century or so.
Not that many revelations await him, for instance, when he finally journeys to Hungary in 1993 for the first time. But his refusal to glamorize or over-interpret what he sees is refreshing. He keeps his perspective and sense of humor. And of balance. By avoiding theorizing and refusing to inflate his own stature as an observer, he offers honest essays each "assaying" the value of the little treasures and trinkets he puts under scrutiny as we watch.
I'd also recommend Monica Porter's "The Paper Bridge" for another expat's visit for a month circa 1980, and Zsuzsanna Ardo's "Culture Shock: Hungary" for two other books interpreting Hungarian mores and sensibilities for the rest of us, whatever our bloodlines.
Inspiring and well-written.......2001-02-26
I heartily recommend this book of essays to expatriate Hungarians and the people close to them as well as second- and third-generation Hungarians with a less firm grasp on what their Hungarian-ness might mean to them. As a Hungarian expatriate living in the U.S. and married to a second-generation Hungarian American, I find Richard Teleky's well-executed essays, which he wrote in an attempt to come to terms with his ethnic identity, very interesting and thought-provoking. Teleky whose grandparents were Hungarian, learnt this difficult language as an adult, following which he set out to visit his forebears' native country and, subsequently, to write about his experiences there, the conversations he conducted with newly acquired friends and distant relatives and reflections on how all this has come to shape his thoughts about his own identity. In my opinion, Teleky, an academic, is at his best when he is most personal. In "Toward a Course on Central European Literature in Translation," he describes, to great comic effect, his experiences teaching a literature course to an initially unknowing group of students who, one feels, by the end of the course -- and the story -- have grown both more mature and open-minded. "What Comes After" and "The Third Generation and the 'Problem' of Ethnicity," the last two essays in this collection, sum up what Teleky has learnt in the worthwhile quest for his connection to a Central European identity. I came away inspired to pose new questions and continue my own quest in a similar spirit, feeling that the five years Teleky put into working on this book enriched his life and deepened his self-understanding. Some of the other outstanding pieces focus on literature: "The Poet as Translator: Margaret Avison's 'Hungarian Snap'" and "Introducing Peter Esterhazy" both testify to Teleky's love of first-class literature and sensitive feeling for this language and the culture in which it is embedded.

Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-03-20
I bought the book back in September of 2006 and have just started reviewing it. I did find an error as mentioned on page 18 in another review by another reader. The Assessed value formula is backwards and you have to reverse the numerator and denominator variables P & A to get the formula to work. Also the revised assessment example on page 20 has some errors also. The formula (1+i)^y should calculate the revised assessment column on page 20 using the 1.5% average increase in assessed value. When you plug in values with y = 1 as the power the values come out. When you use 2-3 years for y, you get a higher value that does not agree with the examples for Laurel St; Haynes St; Green and Hayward Lane respectively. So far this is the major errors I have found but will write back when I see some more. I do agree the classifications of the related formulas are great to the subject matter being expounded on. However I would also like to see more worked out examples for the formulas as this would also serve as a self check for errors. Some of the simpler formulas have no worked out examples and for some this is needed to lock in the theory.

Handy reference guide.......2007-01-04
I ordered this book for my business library and and happy with it, athough it does have some errors in it. However, the material is informative enough to undersatnd, which allows me to perform the calculations in it.
For Real estate investor pros.......2006-03-12
Michael c. Thomsett's REAL ESTATE INVESTOR'S POCKET CALCULATOR: SIMPLE WAYS TO COMPUTER CASHFLOW, VALUE, RETURN, AND OTHER KEY FINANCIAL MEASUREMENTS finally places in the investor's hands the same tools real estate agents use to calculate yield, values, taxable income and operating expenses. All different types of value are revealed in chapters which cover everything from acceleration techniques and methods for reducing interest to ways of maximizing investment returns. Worksheets, tables and charts provide clarity and all the formulas needed to succeed. Very highly recommended as an essential, basic pick any real estate investor should keep at hand.
invalid formulas.......2006-01-10
Correct me if I am wrong but looking at the definitions for assessment ratios they are defined as appraised price (P) * assessment ratio (R) = assessed value (A) so restating this as P * R = A then R = A / P which is not consistent with the book. The book states that R = P / A which is invalid. If you take the example of asked price which for this example lets say it is the appraised price of $107,500 and assessed value of A = 90000. If you use the formula of R = A / P then the ratio is 83.7% if you run the numbers defined in the book formula you get 1.194444444444. Other than that, the book has been very good at figuring the value of a given property. This also applies to the Assessment ratio adjusted.
Here is the reference I found for defining the assessment ratio http://co.laplata.co.us/asrinfo.htm

Customer Reviews:
Good review.......2007-02-12
Good for the basics if you know little or nothing. I think most of barron's editions are well written.
An informative little book!.......2003-06-11
This is a great book to start if you want to get into Real Estate Investing. The book is organized into 51 chapters/Keys that provide short but concise explanation of important real estate investing concepts. The discussions are to the point, succinct, and very easy to grasp. The points are put forward in such a straight forward manner that it is very easy to remember. Because of its small size, I've also found it to be a highly useful reference guide.
A few suggestions: Once you have grasped the concepts in this book, I would highly recommend Robert Campbell's book "Timing the Real Estate Market" to get a better sense of how the real estate market works. After that, Gary Eldred's book "Investing in Real Estate" to learn about negotiation techniques, financing options, finding deals etc. Finally, Andrew Tompos's "Analyzing Investment Properties" will give you an excellent knowledge on how to evaluate a real property by working through cash flow calculations etc.
