Book Description

An illustrated survey of British colonial architecture that once dominated the landscape of the Indian subcontinent, this book tells a rich and complicated history of imperialism.

One of the most revealing legacies of Britain's long history in India is the colonial architecture from the two centuries preceding the struggle for independence. Built to house both occupiers and occupied alike, these imposing buildings, including palaces, mansions, clubhouses and government offices, represented a hybrid of Western and Eastern sensibilities as their architects sought to plant the flag of British dominance in a foreign culture.

Colonial Splendour focuses on India's towns and cities, particularly Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras, providing countless illustrations, sketches, and photographs of the many impressive buildings and ruins that dot India's coastlines, hillsides, and valleys. Andreas Volwahsen's informative commentaries highlight the considerable achievements of these magnificent structures while offering insight into the stories these buildings tell about their own and India's history.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Splendours of the Raj.......2005-02-03

Very comprehensive narrative and nice photos. This book is exhaustive in it's research on the buildings built by the British Raj. The pictures of georgian and victorian buildings in the middle of India is a weird juxtaposition. It's a shame many have been left to decay, I can understand the Indian peoples confliction over the British Raj, but there is no doubt that good and bad the British left a rich history in India and it should be saved. Some of these buildings are absolutely amazing. I was disappointed that the book did not show the great buildings of New Deli, like the Viceroy's House and the Secretariat buildings, I was surprised at their omission. At any rate, this is a fine book on a fascinating subject.

Book Description

Trees are like portraits in that no two are the same. In order to paint trees we must first learn how to draw them. Winter is an ideal time to look at trees, when their structure is not hidden by leaves. Above all the most important skill to learn is observation.

In this fully illustrated pocket size book we study the balance of the naked tree, adding color to the trunk, adding foliage and color, adding depth. Page by page we introduce seasonal tones, spring, summer, fall and winter changes. Trees lit by sunlight, distant trees, negative space, winter woods. Mix the varied hues of trees and bushes, quickly and accurately. A must for the landscape artist.

In order to obtain the most from this and other titles in the 'Color Notes' series, it is strongly recommended that it should be used in conjunction with the Color Mixing Swatch book, an instant guide to 2,460 mixed hues from only 12 colors.

    Book Description

Modern American Indian life is urban, rural, and everything in-between. Lobo and Peters have compiled an unprecedented collection of innovative scholarship, poetry, prose, and stunning art--from photography and graffiti to rap and songs--that documents American Indian experiences of urban life. A pervasive rural/urban dichotomy still shapes the popular and scholarly perceptions of Native Americans, but this is a false expression of a complex and constantly changing reality. When viewed from the Native perspectives, our concepts of urbanity and approaches to American Indian studies are necessarily transformed. Courses in Native American studies, ethnic studies, anthropology, and urban studies must be in step with contemporary Indian realities. This powerful combination of pathbreaking scholarship and visual and literary arts will be enjoyed by students, scholars, and a general audience.

    Book Description

As the first ethnohistory of modern urban Indians, this perceptive study looks at Indians from many tribes living in cities throughout the United States. Fixico has had unparalleled access to Native Americans, particularly their contemporary oral tradition. Through firsthand observations, interviews, and conventional historical sources, he has been able to assess the major impact urbanization has had on Indians and see how they have come to terms with both the negative and enriching aspects of living in cities.

The result is an insightful and empathetic account of how Indian identity is sustained in cities. Today two-thirds of all Indians live in cities. Many of these urban Indians are third- or fourth-generation city dwellers, the descendants of those who first came to urban areas during the federal government's push for relocation from the late 1940s through the 1960s. Fixico looks at both groups of urban Native Americans—those who first settled in cities some fifty years ago and those who have grown up there in the past thirty years—and finds in their experiences a record of survival and adaptation.

Fixico offers a new view of urban Indians, one centered on questions of how their modern identity emerges and perseveres. He shows how the corrosive effects of cultural alienation, alcoholism, poor health services, unemployment, and ghetto housing are slowly being overcome, particularly since the 1970s. After fifty years of urban experiences, Native Americans living in cities are better able today than at any other time to balance tradition and modernity.

As the first ethnohistory of modern urban Indians, this perceptive study looks at Indians from many tribes living in cities throughout the United States.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2007-07-07

This is a pretty good book about American Indians and their difficulties in going into an urban environment. This book can get tedious at times because all the problems the Indians face seem not to be their faults at all, which is hard to believe sometimes. Yes, white society made it difficult for them, as did the urban environment, but the author places most of the blame on these two entities and not even a little on the Indians themselves.

5 out of 5 stars SALUTE THE SARGE!.......2001-03-16

I love this collection. I really do.

Sarge, the lovable, irate officer is no dope. He is onto Pvt. Beetle Bailey, the world's most lovable, lazy, sarge baiting, work dodging private in comic strip history! Sarge, famous for his voracious appetite, short fuse and look alike bull dog, Otto (the dog wears a sergeant's uniform like his owner) is really just a very funny, lovable character. Sarge has a lot to contend with. He has a bunch of funny oddball enlisted men to supervise in addition to some very hilarious officers. General Half-Track of the roving eye, Lt. Fuzz, the sychophant, Lt. Flap, who's as unflappable as his name suggests, Chaplain Staneglass (his NAME brings a smile to one's face) and the rest of the Camp Swampy crew will not disappoint lovers of the strip. I found this collection very funny and I would heartily recommend it. I laughed my way throughout this book. I love it!

Risky Business: Protect Your Business from Being Stalked Conned, or Blackmailed on the Web, by online marketing consultant Daniel S. Janal, is an eye-opening look at some of the most common hazards faced by those who do business in cyberspace. The book examines risks related to internal abuse, external assault, fraud, libel, security, and other potential Net-related disasters. But "you will be able to outsmart criminals" with proper preparation, writes Janal, who recommends workable solutions to the various threats he has identified. From tightening Web site and computer system security, to protecting domain names and guarding against libel and copyright infringement, to fighting identity theft and online impersonation, this book outlines a number of practical solutions to real-life problems that could easily wreak havoc with an inexperienced company blithely hoping to take its place in the business sector of the online world. It also includes relevant forms and policies (such as the Software Publishers Association's recommended employee usage guidelines), step-by-step tips for combating common annoyances (like creating e-mail filters), and pointers to additional online references on specific topics. --Howard Rothman

DANIEL S. JANAL is a professional speaker, author, and marketing consultant specializing on the Internet. Learn how to protect your company from online thieves and false rumors that can damage its reputation by instituting sound security policies and addressing false information quickly and publically.

The Internet has introduced unprecedented business opportunities for marketing, sales and communication. It has also made businesses vulnerable to cybercriminals who exploit the Internet to attack the reputations and finances of companies. In this book, Daniel S. Janal, a professional speaker and consultant specializing on the Internet, provides information and advice for companies and individuals to protect themselves from the predations of cybercriminals.

    Threats from online thieves:
    · Warn employees never to give out credit card numbers, passwords or sensitive company information. Put procedures in place to report people who ask for this information.
    · Always check credit cards for validation, including an address verification check.
    · Put procedures in place for employees to check questionable information or identities by phone or through reliable third-parties.
    · Use encryption or scrambling for sensitive online information so that only those with the key can read it.

    Threats to personal safety:
    · Keep personal information like your phone number and address off of your personal web-site, newsgroups, online phone directories, and out of chat rooms.
    · Make sure that merchants promise not to resell information about you if you give it to them.
    · Know the merchant you're dealing with.

    Threats to your company's reputation:
    · Attack sites. A disgruntled employee or unhappy customer may attack your company's reputation by creating a web-site whose sole purpose is to attack your company. If you can prove that they are not telling the truth, pursue them for libel. You may also be able to sue them for copyright infringement.
    · Have employees sign a company policy forbidding them from making public statements about the company.
    · If false rumors begin to circulate online about your company, dispel them immediately with clear, public statements of denial in the places where they have been circulating.

3 out of 5 stars Good general introduction to Internet security for non-techs.......1999-05-04

The subtitle of this book is misleading, as much of the advice is geared to consumers rather than business owners.

However, if you'd like a good overview of risks involved in participating in cyberspace activities of all sorts, the book is worthwhile.

3 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor- Caution before Coin.......1999-04-17

Once again, Janal would have received five stars for his introductory work on internet security were it not for the numerous typos and editorial errors throughout the book. To cite a glaring example, on page 315 of the book, one of Janal's four crisis communication measures is repeated twice.

Though the book's content is repetitive in many places, much of the information to be found here can be quite eye-opening for those who are either new to the internet or use it infrequently. While it is true that a lot of the information presented in this book can be found on the net, most people probably would not have the time, patience, or money to find it on their own. Janal should be commended for putting together this information and presenting it as a warning for those thinking of venturing on the net. Janal really does give the thinking novice cause for pause.

The organization of this volume is lacking in a couple of key areas and could have been better organized. Contact information for those quoted was repeated ad nauseum, and could have either been presented once at the end of a chapter or as an appendix at the end of the book. Since the book's target audience is obviously those who are new to the internet and those who rarely use it, Janal could have appended useful information, such as links to useful organizations. Granted, this information was included throughout the book, but really interrupted the flow of his easygoing, understandable dialogue and got in the way of important points in the text. Some of the chapters could have been subdivided into smaller, meatier chunks of information. On the other hand, other pieces of information, such as domain name trivia, could have been dumped altogether.

Yet, from a practical standpoint, the internet, as presented by Janal, can be a legal nightmare. One must consider intellectual property issues, copyright infringement, libel laws, trademark abuse, and domain name protection, in addition to various invasions of privacy and civil liberty long before venturing onto the internet.

To his credit, Janal freely admits that his book is no substitute for good legal help, and the wise web entrepreneur will retain good legal services long before going on the net and facing a problem. Most progressive companies that are serious about competing in the digital era have already taken the steps necessary to protect themselves, and intelligent web surfers are using the internet with a good deal of caution.

In the end, as many of the dangers Janal points out are often unavoidable and come out of the blue, there really is no substitute for a good legal offense, general and up-to-date awareness of the internet medium, and quite frankly, plain old common sense.

5 out of 5 stars Follow this advice to protect your business........1999-03-19

Common sense is often obvious only in retrospect. If you are starting or running an online business of any kind, this layman's oriented approach to security is the perfect place for you to start protecting yourself and your business from all kinds of nasties...

    o hackers

    o intellectual rights infringers

o etc., etc. -- even your own employees!

It's given me the right place to start asking my techies the right questions on numerous security-related issues. It's *THE* "protect yourself" book that we recommend in our book, "Make Your Site SELL!"

While a couple of parts are getting a touch dated, most issues are evergreen. I'm sure I'll find myself referring to it five years from now, if Dan can't convince the publisher to issue a new edition (hint, hint, Dan!).

Thanks Dan, for an unequivocal 5-star effort.

This well-written book by Dan Janal is a "must read" book for people interested in protecting themselves and their businesses from Internet scams and fraud. We often recommend it to the subscribers of Internet ScamBusters (the number one electronic newsletter on Internet fraud). Dan provides a very realistic assessment of what to watch out for online - and unfortunately, there are lots of issues. But fortunately, it's not too hard to protect yourself when you know what to look for.

Finding the right house usually means first finding a good real estate agent. That's the focus of Buyer Beware! Author Carla Cross has been an agent herself for more than 20 years, but she candidly reveals many secrets of the business to help buyers avoid being buffaloed by lazy, incompetent, or unethical practitioners. That may happen surprisingly often; one-third of all homebuyers say they would not use their agents again, according to an industry survey. Cross tells how best to screen and choose an agent, explains why open houses are a waste of time for buyers and sellers alike, and advises on right and wrong ways to negotiate a discount of an agent's commission. By lifting the veil on a complex and fast-changing industry, Buyer Beware! helps readers enter the home-buying process with eyes wide open. --Barry Mitzman

        Book Description

Buyer Beware! by veteran real estate agent, educator and trainer Carla Cross, offers home buyers their own bill of rights in assuring fair and effective representation from real estate agents. Though some home buying books touch on the basics of selecting and working with an agent, they don't delve into the potential perils inherent in the buyer/agent relationship. Buyer Beware! reveals the inner workings of the buyer-agent relationship, proving that more knowledgeable consumers are better positioned to have a positive home buying experience.

I bought this book after beginning the home buying process and have realized a few mistakes I have already made, according to the author. This book's greatest help and heaviest emphasis is on choosing a good, qualified agent which is the info I was searching for, in an easy-to-read format. I recommend this book as a place to start for first-time home buyers.

        1 out of 5 stars A book by a realtor for realtors.......1999-09-25

This is a decent guide about how to select a realtor and prioritize what you are looking for in a home. However, most of the book is a dissertaion on the home real estate industry and why realtors are so important. They are essential in the process, but there are many more varialbles in the equation. Mortgages, offers, and inspections are some of these variables, which are barely glossed over in this tome.

I found Kiplinger's "Buying and Selling a Home" much more comprehensive and useful.

"Buyer Beware" is, ironically, aptly named.

5 out of 5 stars I've never read a more practical, useful book on homebuying.......1999-04-10

This is a book written by someone who HAS "been there and done that." Carla's experience is based upon years in the trenches actually doing deals and thus it is much more useful than a book written by someone who has only talked with agents.

I think that she comes closer to what real people experience in the homebuying process and thus her advice and counsel is much more useful both to first-time homebuyers as well as more experienced homeowners.

I strongly recommend this very practical book as an ideal companion to my best-selling book on mortgages HOW TO SAVE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON YOUR HOME MORTGAGE.

So armed, you will be much better prepared carve out the best deal on the right home.

5 out of 5 stars Great overall reference book for first time buyers.......1998-12-20

This book is easy to read. It covers every angle of concern for first time buyers without getting bogged down into details. This is a great book for people thinking about buying but are overwhelmed buy horror stories of the experience. Ms. Cross includes lists of questions to ask when interviewing agents, things to ask when looking at a house, and ways to determine what are your priorities and desires in a new home (i.e. safety, many kids, no kids, large lawns, established home, new home etc...) so that your buying experience can be almost painless. I have reccommened the book to several friends and they have thanked me for the concise yet complete information.

        5 out of 5 stars The best home-buying guide I've read.......1998-11-30

This is a must buy for anyone planning to buy a house. The book is written in a way that makes it a very fast read, yet it is loaded with in-depth information. It helps you select an agent, select a home, and tells you how to best estimate the value of the home. It's packed with all those things your (average or below) agent never told you. I really felt like I was learning all the pertinent information I needed to make an informed home-buying decision.

          2 out of 5 stars Aptly titled.......1999-08-08

I read this book on the recommendation of the normally reliable Ed Gorman (who praises it to the heavens in his famous BLACK LIZARD ANTHOLOGY OF CRIME FICTION). What could he have been thinking? This is a very bland, not very well written, entirely average P.I. novel. There is a good twist or two, but the big revelation at the climax is poorly developed and not nearly as deep a philosophical comment on modern life as the author imagines. The occasional pungent observation does not save this book from being one of the drearier 188 pages I have struggled through. Skip it.

You get what you pay for; as a mail-fraud investigator, Casey Bennett had learned how far from true that adage was. But an investigation into a suspect coin company taught her the truth of another: good things come when you least expect them. Even the shadow of suspicion hanging over Simon Ashford couldn't hide the truth: this was one man in a million. Suddenly Casey's quest took on a very personal note. She had to clear Simon's name, because she could never live without his love.
