    Book Description

Explores the idea that Louis Sullivan's ornament was central to his contribution as architect and city shaper. Early in Sullivan's career in the 1890s, when he emerged as a leading skyscraper architect of Chicago, his ornament gave scale and quality to his work. After 1900, as his career declined, it served to identify his buildings and the humane conception they encapsulated in an increasingly hostile cityscape. The brilliant pencil execution of ornament in his old age became a surrogate for the great architectural projects realized earlier. Stunning new color photographs illuminate this extended essay on how Sullivan's ornament shaped the city.

For many people, Walker Evans's name conjures up visions of the rural American South of the 1930s, where the photographer made some of his most notable images. But signs--marking buildings; advertising grocery prices, churches, and cabarets; communicating political messages--transfixed him throughout his life. Evans was interested in all aspects of signs, from the typography and graphic layout to the messages they conveyed and the objects themselves. He collected nearly as many of them as he photographed and often exhibited actual signs alongside his photos. Andrei Codrescu, in the essay he wrote to accompany the images in Signs, offers a concise explanation of the power of this subject matter. He writes that Evans's era was, "the time of popular writing, of huge advertisements, of lettering that invaded every nook and cranny and even wrote the skyline. America wrote big, with bold new alphabets, in lightbulbs, in neon, in smoke. One could follow the text of twentieth-century America from coast to coast...."

This small book is beautifully designed. The 50 gelatin silver prints selected from the Getty Museum's collection are reproduced on full pages with little or no cropping, and are meticulously documented at the back of the book with notations on dimensions, dates the photos were shot, and printing dates. A wide range of images, from the Photographer's Window Display, in which miniature portraits are displayed behind a pane of glass on which the word studio is painted, to a pair of commercially produced movie posters advertising a double feature of The Man from Guntown and I Hate Women, offers readers perspective on the breadth of Evans's vision. This focused look at an element of Evans's photography helps broaden the understanding of his entire body of work.

            Book Description

Walker Evans photographed signs throughout every phase of his career. From the 1920s to the time of his death in 1975, Evans was obsessed with the signage he found in modern America--from billboards to gas station pumps to street graffiti to handmade announcements of a Saturday-night dance.
This book features fifth photographs of signs from the Getty Museum's collection, presented with a lively, provocative essay by Andrei Codrescu. Codrescu trains a perceptive eye on the artistic and social climate in Evans's America and reflects on the photographer's images as documents and
commentary. Some of the images included come from the place and era most closely associated with Evans--the rural South of the 1930s. But also included are photographs that will be less familiar to many of his admirers, such as his images of New York City street scenes and advertising signs, or
pictures he took in Havana and in Sarasota, Florida.

Another beautiful collection from Walker Evans, showing his greatest photos of billboards, movie posters, newspaper headlines, theater marquees, graffiti, street signs, hand-painted shop frotns, covering 1920-1975. You will discover variety of ways to interpret the different layers of meanings from his photos with striking impression. It provides an excellent documentary about American culture. Walker Evans also collected and exhibited signs, sometimes next to his photographs, which brings his work into another level. From letters to graphics, from graphics to signs, sometimes people is becoming helpless under the mass media. Highly recommended for graphics / black and white fans.

Walker Evans SIGNS are unique and wonderful. These images glow in there black and white surroundings. Some of the images are simple and delicate and other are busy and loud...a great mixure.Codrescu's essays give you a delightful walk through of Evans life.Andrei has an original insight... description of these signs from our past. There is excitment in these essays...energy in which Evans must have had as he photographed these images. As you read on you will see Evans attraction to signs. I also enjoyed the layout of the book. The images have room to breath and the text is perfect. I was very happy to add this book with my collection of photography books.

I read her "Front Row at the White House" first and expected to get the same information, just not as many presidents. But in her first book, Ms. Thomas included more information than in her second book.

You've always read about the presidents, by reading this book you get a 'behind the scenes' glimpse into their lives and how the reporters do their jobs.

This book is wonderful, especially for folks without a lot of business background. It was very helpful for me when I began to interview accountants.

This book does an excellent job of educating the average person & Small Bussiness Owner on how to structure a business and to legally take advantage of the Internal Revenue Code. It gives great examples, and gives step-by-step guidelines that I actually understood and used.

There are a few typos, but overall a very informative book.

4 out of 5 stars Straightforward information on common tax risks and opportunities.......2006-11-06

This clearly written book offers a handy guide to tax strategy for the rich and for those who hope to be rich. Author Diane Kennedy, a certified public accountant, provides basic information on common tax risks and opportunities. Without using burdensome jargon, she explains the fundamentals of financial reports and record keeping. Her approach is commonsense and straightforward she doesn't make outrageous promises or exotic, inapplicable recommendations. The title is slightly misleading. This book is not really about loopholes, but rather about sound planning and management - especially for business owners. It does get into the minutiae of tax law, which is subject to change, so some of the details may have a short shelf life, and much of the advice will have little applicability outside of the United States. Nonetheless, we recommend this basic guide to anyone who needs a fundamental introduction to personal financial and tax management in the U.S.

I thought this book was excellent! I learned quite a lot from reading it and hope to really apply what I have learned to my finances. It was jam packed with helpful tips and ideas on how to take full advantage of tax loopholes. I would recommend this to any small business owner!!

                      1 out of 5 stars simplistic.......2006-01-23

Not very well written. Its is simplistic & somewhat condescending.
Later chapters tend to repeat basic concepts covered earlier without expanding upon the issues. There are more knowlegable authors out there that are refreshing and can effectively advance the your knowledge.

2 out of 5 stars Read it and weep.......2004-03-18

This book makes a lot of assumptions. It assumes that the reader is EXTREMELY well versed in corporate tax advantages. It assumes that the reader already owns a corporation. It assumes that the book will be read with a dictionary of financial terms close at hand. (It should be. The book is poorly written, with key terms lacking adequate defenition.) I support the Rich Dad series. It is a great way for a beginner to get their feet wet. This book assumes that the reader can already swim! This is an excellent book to give you a taste of how you can leverage corporate structures to your advantage. It's not a detailed "how to" book but it does review the various structures (C Corp, S Corp, LLC) and how they can be used to keep more money in your pocket or provide asset protection.

Throughout the book, "real life" examples are used to better illustrate the subject matter including computer consulting and real estate. The author explains that you should create a support system around you - people that are experts in their area: accountants, attorneys, etc. Leverage their expertise, ask them questions, and have them do the work you shouldn't be doing.

The author assumes that you have, or are creating, a business. She points out the tax advantages to the corporation and "paying yourself first" when it comes to the tax-man. Included are lists and lists of expenses and other items that can be paid for by your corporation and lower your tax liability.

If you want to get a taste of what you can do, get a copy of this book and go into it with an open mind. All of the subject matter is legitmiate - there is nothing illegal about it. I've used many of the tatics described in the book and they've worked great for my business.

2 out of 5 stars A middling text that doesn't translate well to audio.......2004-01-19

This book is intended for fledgling entrepreneurs, and as such its title is somewhat misleading. Rather than discussing obscure "loopholes" in United States tax law, it concentrates on relatively basic business structure and investment strategies. The abridged version is very short, and the presentation tends to degrade into little more than descriptions of different types of corporations, and other fundamental information obtainable from resources far better than this.

I do not recommend the CD audio version of the book. I found author Diane Kennedy's flat, tinny reading voice and artificial inflection to be grating and unaccommodating. Unfortunately, even when Kennedy is insightful and objective, the book's dialogue and narration sound like a 1950s educational film.

As a fan of Kiyosaki's, I was excited to pick-up Diane Kennedy's Loopholes of Rich. It was a great read and chocked full of insight.

Some of the tips actually helped me save money on my taxes this year. It is definitely worth adding to your collection. I am re-reading it right now and keep finding gold nuggets of helpful information.

3 out of 5 stars Tax Strategies for the Rich and those that want to be Rich.......2003-03-12

The Rich Dad Poor Dad series of books created by Robert Kiyosaki helps people to understand how it is that some average, hard-working people propel themselves out of the middle class, while others work just as hard but can't seem to get anywhere. This guidebook is another example of the excellent material published in The Rich Dad Poor Dad series. It focuses on how to get the right information from the right advisors.

In my corporate and tax law practice, I often instruct my clients to read this book as homework. It provides a basis of legal and tax information that most people have heard of but were afraid to ask. Thus, the book eases communications between a client and his or her legal, financial and tax advisors by giving the client an understanding of what's relevant to their planning strategies. Clients who better understand the principles of legal, financial, and tax planning will get more out of the relationships with their advisors.

The book also helps people to understand the psychological difference between being a worker and being an entrepreneur. The average investor or small business owner makes his or her money on raw talent and perseverance. Their only difference from the sophisticated and highly successful entrepreneur is a lack of self-awareness about the direction they want to go, how best to get there, and who to turn to for advise along the way.
