Book Description

Each volume in the Ten Landscapes series presents a detailed, inside look at the outstanding work of the most innovative individual landscape garden designers working today. Each book features ten gardens by a single premier landscape designer. All ten landscapes are illustrated with beautiful photography, plans, drawings, sketches, and details of important garden elements. In addition, each project is accompanied by a discussion of the design concept, the designer/client relation and the creative process.

Stephen Stimson Associates Landscapes Architects is a design firm deeply rooted in planning, design and construction of landscape in all its forms: garden, street, park, campus, community, and region. The firm is renowned for exceeding design goals with regard to space and use of materials, and Stimson's work often challenges design assumptions by using common materials in uncommon ways. Much of the firm's work--from residential to corporate to institutional--responds to the elements and natural foundations of the northeastern coastal United States.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Photography.......2002-03-22

This book was incredible: helpful, cohesive, and stunningly written. However, the most attractive part of the collection has to be the photography. Each photo not only captures the spirit of the image shot, but captures the imagination as well. Mayer does a fabulous job of grasping the essence of Trulove's verbal images in his work. This book is a must-have, not only for the coffee table anthology, but as a feast for the eyes.

        Book Description

Tough motion-graphics and effects production challenges require bold solutions, and Adobe's completely overhauled After Effects 6.0 ($699, Standard Edition; $999, Professional Edition) has a bushel of them! Here to get you up to speed on it--perhaps in time to meet your next deadline!--is everyone's favorite task-based guide. Employing the same concise instructions and visual approach as Peachpit's popular Visual QuickStart Guides but geared toward more advanced users, this Visual QuickPro Guide covers all the improvements that make this version of Adobe's motion-graphics and effects program such a boon to video pros of all stripes: a revolutionary text engine, support for OpenGL (which greatly accelerates 2D and 3D graphics rendering), new vector paint tools (which allow painting on layers), a faster and more accurate motion tracker, advanced keying tools, and more. Through step-by-step instructions, enhanced by plenty of tips and sidebars, veteran video editor Antony Bolante will have you effectively and efficiently importing and managing footage, viewing and editing layers, applying effects, animating type, and more in no time.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use reference for a Novice-Intermediate After Effects Student.......2006-03-08

I found this book to be a very easy to navigate reference for my attempt at learning and using After Effects. I recommend it as an excellent cross-reference resource, especially if you are attending an After Effects classroom. I'm not sure, however, whether a nubie or novice would be able to learn easily just from reading this book alone. Nevertheless, I give this book and the way it is structured, two-thumbs up as far as adding it to anyone's Visual Media Library.

        2 out of 5 stars typical.......2005-10-21

I wasn't expecting anything less and the only reason I got the book was because it was cheaper on amazon then at my college's bookstore. Now what I didn't realize was the fact that Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects volumes 1 and 2 are far superior to any other book out there. So I recommend those instead. This book is just as dull and boring as most informational software books with little explanation about how to do things, little picture representation and only explaining the basics oh in say 700 pages.... if you know how to use adobe illustator or photoshop which u clearly should if you intend on using aftereffects, I suggest whether you are a beginner intermediate or advanced animator to get the creating motion graphics books instead. Ya 10$ more but the learning experience and education you'll get from those books compared to this one is uncomparable.

Overall in 700 pages i really just skimmed through like i do with most books exactly written like this one. not very good at keeping my attention with black and white dull text with boring material.

4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Book for After Effects.......2004-11-04

It says the books in the Visual QuickPro series are similar to the Visual QuickStart series, but QuickPro is for more advanced users. After Effects is, by its very nature, a more advanced application for creating video than, say iMovie. That's because After Effects is a "motion graphics" program with far more features than basic video editing. I think of it as Photoshop with motion and a timeline.

However, if you are a beginner at After Effects, this book can still work for you if you start with the early chapters first.

Bolante does a good job of giving you an overview of After Effects' interface, palettes, and the workflow. He moves on to how to create, open and close projects, including how to choose your settings and change them.

Next is importing files, how to import still images, image sequences, files with alpha channels, footage, etc. He also tells you how to loop footage and remove film pulldown. If you don't know what that is, look at page 60 for a few pages of good explanation.

The chapter on Managing Footage does a nice job of helping you organize your footage and understand how to view it. (Do you know about action-safe and title-safe areas?)

Like Photoshop, After Effects works in layers (with the addition of audio layers), and Bolante gives you the skinny on creating, naming, hiding, showing and rasterizing them. Editing is all about manipulating the layers by trimming, moving, sequencing, overlapping, splitting, changing the layer's speed, etc.

Motion Graphics is all about adding images, motion, changes in size, transparency, blending modes and more. Most of it is done with keyframes. Chapter 7 gives the ins and outs of keyframing. There is a big chapter on masking. Like Photoshop, you use masks to bled various images together. But, you begin, end, rotate, change, scale, show and hide them over time. He covers it all.

Special effects are the "magic" part of After Effects, so Bolante devotes a couple of chapters to their intricacies. There are also chapters on creating and animating text, painting on layers, keyframe interpolation (advanced layer techniques), integrating 3D layers, managing complex projects, and, of course, outputting your movies. All-in-all, it is a very thorough book for both Mac and PC users.

4 out of 5 stars many special effects.......2004-10-18

Adobe is striving mightily to make After Effects the dominant tool for editing animated images, much like Photoshop is the pre-eminent program for editing static images. Bolante shows here why AE has a far more challenging task.

Even leaving aside competing tools, AE must handle video editing and audio editing. Here, it needs to synchronise two such tracks, in such ways as the ending of one triggering the start of another.

The audio editing is somewhat rudimentary. Other programs that specialise in this have more sophisticated options. But, unsurprisingly, the video editing forms the major part of AE. Several chapters are devoted to it. Many video special effects come right out of the box. Like texturing surfaces, or applying a gradient wipe.

Of course, many films will need text to be shown in the video. As expected, you get a panoply of font families to choose from. Along with effects like showing text along a contour that you define. Quite familiar to Photoshop users. But now redone in a broader context.

To be sure, this is not a simple book. The complexity of film editing necessitates this. But you should find that most tasks described here are straightforward to do. Though realistically, if you're trying a technique for the first time, many iterations may be needed before you're satisfied.

1 out of 5 stars NOT designer friendly!.......2006-10-09

I'm a graphic design student that is delving into the complex world of motion graphics, and I thought this book was convoluted and overly detailed. I fully acknowledge that I'm a beginner and tend to be more creative than technical, but I felt that perhaps the book could have been written with readers like myself in mind.

Trying to get through this was like my asking for directions somewhere, and having the person tell me seven different ways to get to the location. The fact that he would take a method to do something in the program and explain three different ways to do it just made me feel more confused.

I own an InDesign book made by Adobe that is a lot shorter and has a lot less text, and learned a lot faster just by using it as a reference and working on independent projects. I feel that this particular book has so much text in it, it would be hard to use it as a reference.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2004-03-09

This is a grate book, explaining every thing about after effects very deeply but in simple ways anyone can understand.
Also it has a lot of side bars explaining basic but valuable terms from the video/animation world that every animator should now about.
I think every one who will read this book will get all the tools he needs to become an after effects animator

And thank you very much Antony Bolante

5 out of 5 stars Great beginners and Quick Start Book.......2002-01-12

Thi Book is excellent for those who just want to get Affter Effects up and running and quickly jump into the application. It is not, however, going to teach you how to do stunning special effects, as this book is not geared for that purpose.

What this book does do however, is organize the various features of After Effects into an easy to read, quick to lookup format. This book wastes no time at all in getting you to find out what the heck that weird looking tiny button on a particular window does....as the title implies...this is a VISUAL instruction guide to After Effects.

If you are already familiar with After Effects and instead are looking for a book to teach you how to make amazing footage with it, then this is NOT the book you want.

If you are however, totally new to After effects and want to just get some darned footage, graphics and sound loaded into the application and apply some basic animated effects to these elements then this IS the book for you.

The main problem with After Effects is it's complex interface. The interface is very non-intuitive and extremely user unfriendly....that is until you know what the heck you are doing in it. This is where this book comes in. I was able to pick up this book and in about 20 mins pretty much know the basics of what the heck I was doing in After Effects. I am one of these people who hates long boring labourious explanations for simplistic concepts....in other words WHAT DOES THIS BUTTON DO and tell me in like one paragraph not a whole bloody chapter....that's exactly what this book does. It completely cuts to the chase in plain simple, easy to understand terms.

If you want to learn creative techniques and shapen your blending, composition and editing skills then stay far away from this book and go by a book for that purpose. But if you have just loaded up After Effects for the first time and are sitting there staring at it wondering why the damned application will not allow you to change the duration of footage, or how the heck to apply a rotation over time (instead of instantaneously) then this book will help you with those basic concepts and it will help you FAST!

And finally, cheers to the Author who made great efforts NOT to jam the book full of techie talk. Thank you so much for skipping the BS and using Plain English to explain things.

I found his book not intended to learn from. It is a great reference book to get you up to speed on what things are and where they are located. Example, whats motion math and where are the parameters. If you want to learn how to inpliment motion math into your work, you need to get another book. I would not be learning AE without this book. I hate reading the adobe pdf's. Also for (...)how can you complain. If your seriously interested in AE then you should have about every piece of info you can your hands on.

I grew up in Anchorage during the same time that Kim Rich did so I bought this book for my sister for her birthday. It got passed from family member to family member until it made it back to me in Texas. My mother doesn't usually read books and even she couldn't put it down. I found it to be very interesting although it may not be as good to those without ties to Alaska. I knew that Anchorage has its sleazy side but I had no idea about the activities described in this book although I do remember some of the characters and murders. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Glad this was re-issued and would like to see more from her. .......2006-03-13

Although biographies are not my favorite reading, I was drawn to this when it first came out. I still remember the feelings evoked by how she was able to deal with her parents and her life -- her strength and resilience as she was growing up. Her strength in her later search for answers, her maturity and understanding, and her forgiveness and love for her mother and father, although both parents were flawed and could not give her the kind of love and life so needed by a child, is a powerful statement.

                    5 out of 5 stars Devotion.......2003-12-26

I am a person who finishes a book of this length in a day. But this book I held onto for weeks. Such extraordinary courage and objectivity it must have taken to write this book. One should be proud. My Holiday Greetings to Kim Rich and her family.

5 out of 5 stars Not exactly the parents from the Brady Bunch.......2003-08-08

Kim Rich, who grew up in Anchorage during the 60s and 70s, had the parents from hell: Mom was a prostitute who ended her years in a mental hospital, and dad was an operator of illegal gambling joints who was eventually murdered due to a dispute over ownership of a massage parlor. Her parents tried to create the facade of a respectable middle-class family when Kim was a child, but all for naught; Kim imparts such experiences as being mistaken by the police for a prostitute, at age 13, when they raided her house.

I sense writing the book was an act of therapy for the author, who was trying to reconcile the fact that although her parents loved her, they were, at the core, bad people. It is deeply moving to see how the author struggled to have a normal childhood and normal teenage years despite the underworld characters who surrounded her and the emotional baggage her parents saddled her with. This well-written, articulate book is also a portrayal of what Anchorage, Alaska, was like during the 60s and 70s.

5 out of 5 stars wonderfully moving memoir of a daughter searching for home.......1998-09-15

I read this book after seeing the movie 'Johnny's Girl' which is based on Kim Rich's life story. As I suspected, the book offered a fuller portrait of the struggles Rich endured and the sense of survial she must have felt. Her writing style is fluid and funny and moving and I recommend this book to readers who value excellent literarily nonfiction. I look forward to her next book!

Sideshows sprung up alongside traveling circuses across the United States in the mid 19th Century after the railway system linked both coasts, and they fully flourished in rural areas after the turn of the century. With their inexpensive promises of lurid delights, fantastic feats, and horrific "monstrosities," they were part magic show, part raunchy B-movie, and part wunderkammer, all in one. The barker and music might draw a customer close, but a well-executed banner might make or break an act. Firms sprang up across the country to handle demand, and the works are often astounding and lurid combinations of text and image. These works stand as one of the more fascinating cross-pollinations of illustration, signage and self-taught / vernacular art in American history. They're also very un-PC and strangely beautiful. As with all modern advertising, the promise of the images rarely lived up to their accompanying pitches; the "Alligator Girl" just suffered from a dreadful skin condition, while the "Feejee Mermaid" was, you guessed it, not really a mermaid. The accompanying essays are all terse, fascinating, and tackle different aspects of the sideshow arts, the color illustrations plentiful and crisp. Even the most casual fan of tattooing knows that having Don "Ed" Hardy write an essay is a major coup. In the introductory essay, Lisa Stone and Randy Johnson rightly connect the lurid works to creations by margin-walking artists such as Ed Paschke, Karl Wirsum, and Joel-Peter Witkin. The photos of banners on location, as they looked back in the day, are especially interesting. While not the first or most definitive sampling of this work, it is easily the best. --Mike McGonigal

Freaks, Geeks and Strange Girls is an overview of the gaudy advertising developed on American fair grounds to convince patrons to spend their hard earned nicker on the often dubious attractions inside the tent. Banner painting developed its own vernacular and traditions over the years, and the material presented here runs the gamut from the naive to the highly sophisticated. The illustrations are accompanied by essays on various aspects of sideshow culture, but what I find the most interesting are the firsthand accounts provided by banner painter and performer Johnny Meah.

She's never given much thought to boys before; now Johnny is all that's on her mind. Finally she finds the courage to invite him to a dance. 5 out of 5 stars A throwback to a simpler time that bridges the gap between generations.......2007-03-07

It's the first night of Christmas vacation when fifteen-year-old Jean Jarrett feels something wonderful brewing in the air. Sadly, she can't place her finger on it, all she can say is that she can feel that something nice will happen. And it does. Jean is simply accompanying her best friend, Elaine Mundy, and her mother to the local country club to drop off holiday decorations, when Jean is picked out of the crowd by a tall, handsome boy and asked to dance. And so kicks off a whirlwind adventure. While Jean does not get the boy's name, Elaine is determined to find him again, and seeks him out at school where he begins speaking to Jean on a regular basis, and making her feel special. Jean absolutely adores the attention that she's receiving, but she can't help but question it at times. After all, Johnny is a seventeen-year-old senior who is tall and handsome, and could easily have his pick of any girl at Northgate High, yet he seems genuinely interested in Jean. Short, ungraceful, glasses-wearing Jean, who can't sew a skirt together evenly, and spends her Friday and Saturday nights fantasizing about the slightly musically inept TV star, Kip Laddish, and writing to her pen pals across the world. However, as the school year progresses, Johnny seems to pay even more attention to Jean. He goes out of his way to meat her in the school hallways, calls on her to go to the drive-in for a Coke, invites her to hang out with him and his friends during lunch, and even attempts to come around to her house on the weekends to hang out with her and her folks. Jean can't help but believe that Johnny really does like her, but Jean's older sister, Sue, seems slightly skeptical. Jean is sure that Sue is simply jealous because no boys ever come calling for her. But, as Jean continues to learn more about Johnny, she begins to wonder if Sue isn't correct. Maybe Johnny doesn't feel as strongly towards her as she thought. But as long as he's spending time pursuing her, Jean feels inclined to savor each and every moment with Johnny.

With the amount of racy books on the market nowadays, it's a wonderful feeling to have the opportunity to go back to basics, and relive the nostalgia and innocence of a simpler time, when girls spent their afternoons sewing and baking, and going out to eat at a restaurant was a big deal that happened on very rare occasions. And that is what readers are treated to with Beverly Cleary's JEAN AND JOHNNY. Jean is such an adorable character, whose awkwardness is charming, and really brings her tale to life. The tight-knit relationship she experiences with her parents, and her older sister, Sue, is adorable, and is such a pleasure to read about in a sea of novels filled with teenagers who do nothing but bicker with their parents, and share rivalries with their siblings. The hard-time's that seem to plague Jean's family, while bittersweet, are also quite enjoyable to read about, as they illustrate the meaning of a penny, and the hardships that people fell upon during this particular era, when scrimping and saving was a way of life. Johnny is perfect as the cad-like big man on campus, whose ego is large, and love of himself is slightly laughable. Even as the hunk-esque character, however, Johnny is likable, in a slightly obnoxious way, who will appeal to readers of all ages. A throwback to a simpler time that bridges the gap between generations.

The closest that 15-year-old Jean and her best friend Elaine have gotten to boys is dreaming about Kip Laddish, a handsome singer with a weekly TV program. Then, one day when she least expects it, Jean meets Johnny, a handsome popular 17-year-old, and her world is turned upside down.

No longer content with imagining "what if," Jean begins to live her whole life for Johnny. Making sure she looks pretty in case she meets Johnny, replaying every conversation in her mind and walking past his house in the hopes of meeting him "accidentally on purpose" consume all of Jean's time...so much so, that she barely notices when she begins ostacizing her family and Elaine. And it takes "the hard way" for Jean to realize that just because a boy is handsome and popular doesn't mean he is kind...

4 out of 5 stars some things do stay the same.......2004-12-30

The characters in this young adult novel are so wonderfully alive! Shy but determined Jean, Johnny the adorable snake-in-the-grass, and Homer the science nerd (but not so nerdy that he doesn't ask Jean for a good-night kiss!), and Jean's sensible sister Sue and straight-arrow parents make this an interesting read. Yeah, yeah, it's set in the 50's! So what?--kids today will be both intrigued and amused by the retro references. And, it would make a great grandparent/teen together read: The grandparent could explain all the freaky references, like girls-only sewing classes in high school, and how car ownership for a teenager back then was even more of a status symbol than it is today.

This is tame enough for 5th and 6th graders to read; at that age, they are definitely interested in what adults (read "teens") do, even if they don't quite want to enter the adult world just yet.

4 out of 5 stars Real Teen Life.......2004-07-09

hey i really liked this book. It really related to what real girls in high school and sometimes junior high go through. Jean(main character) met a boy named johnny. He seemed really nice but on their first date, he stood her up and then lied about it. She accepted when he asked her on a second date( and he really came) He walked her home a lot and took pictures with her but when it came time to go to the dance which her promised to go to her with, he stood her up again and lied about it. Instead she went with his friend and had an ok time, but he really made her feel special. THe ENd

3 out of 5 stars The "no illustrations" edition........2002-09-03

The publishers did this book a great disservice by not including the charming illustrations that were in the original 1959 edition (and most of its subsequent editions). Though these drawings were a bit dated - Jean's dad wears horn rimmed glasses, Jean and the other girls wear long skirts and saddle oxfords to school - so is the book! Keeping these 1950s-esque illustrations would just seem appropriate for a book that is so quintessentially 1950s. Without these illustrations, a first-time reader would think that this book was about Jehovah's witnesses, what with Jean and her sister making their own clothes, the high school sewing class for girls and the lavishness of going out for Cokes. With the recent return of retro, it's amazing that the publishers didn't opt with including the old illustrations. The same goes for the new editions of "Fifteen" and "Sister of the Bride" - both Beverly Cleary books that were given the same treatment. For the full effect of these charming books, better find an older edition.

                            3 out of 5 stars Historical footnote.......2001-12-20

As commented by other reviews this book is rather dated in its wildness athough at the time of its initial release was a a mild shocker. The Boyfriend was in fact Spike Hawkins. "Who had a wife and three children in Edgware". His middle son ended up in the Rock Group 'Big Audio Dynamite' with Mick Jones from The Clash.

2 out of 5 stars Novel based on the true experiences of a '60s groupie.......1998-12-01

This is hardly the best book written by a groupie (those honors, in my opinion, go to Pamela Des Barres' classic "I'm With The Band") but it's not a terrible read either.

"Groupie" may have raised eyebrows in 1969 when it was first published, but there's nothing too shocking in here by today's standards.

The book is based on Jenny Fabian's real experiences as part of London's music scene, and the bands are given aliases to "protect" their identities. (But you can figure out some of the identities based on Jenny's descriptions.)

I was expecting to read about more famous bands in this book, but the only "big names" are Pink Floyd (aka Satin Odyssey), the Jimi Hendrix Experience (aka Jacklin H. Event), and the Animals (aka the Savage). The rest of the bands mentioned in the book had moderate success in England and never really crossed over in a big way in the U.S. or much of the rest of the world.

The '60s counterculture lingo in the book is somewhat hilarious ("groovy" and "scene" are two favorite words), but much of Jenny's story goes downhill after she describes "pulling" (having sex with) a musician she calls "Ben," who's obviously Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd.

After telling that story, the reader has to wade through too many chapters describing Jenny's slide into an emotionally abusive relationship with the manager of a local band. Jenny also dates other men from the local music scene, but the relationships ultimately end up nowhere.

The book ends on a disappointing note, leaving the reader wondering if the '60s really were as much fun as Jenny would like us to believe.

5 out of 5 stars a fast-paced groovy rock text for any serious groupie chick.......1997-10-10

"Having a scene", getting high on "tincture" and "plating", it's all there in the story of Katie, a groovy 19 year old, living in swinging London in 1969. It's based on true facts and you can play a guessing game with who Katie's conquests really are from all the happening English bands of these times. It's fun, risque for having been written in the late 1960's, but always serious, as Katie searches for the ultimate scene... Read it! As they say "the only place for chicks in rock and roll is in the back of the van"!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply a must read for all real estate agents and buyers.......2007-01-09

This book is a breakthrough manual for "how-to" buy real estate. Using simple language, a large number of examples, and an organized approach to each chapter, Marilyn Sullivan shows every real estate agent and home buyer innovative techniques for obtaining real estate.

I knew that Equity Sharing was a proven technique to buy and sell real estate, but this book outlines strategies for real life situations. If you are getting a divorce and want to keep your home, The New Home Buying Strategy shows you how to do it! If you don't have enough money for a downpayment, and if you wisely don't wish to buy with 100% financing, then the New Home Buying Strategy shows numerous examples of exactly how to locate an investor and make your dream come true. By the way, a hidden benefit of this book is that it is a significant help to investors as well as buyers. The book is filled with tables, illustrations and real life examples of how to calculate ownership percentages, payoffs, buyouts, etc. In other words, what I loved about this book was that it is truly an operating manual, not just another overview book. I highly recommend this book, its author, and the concepts around which the book is written.

4 out of 5 stars So far, *so* good.......2007-01-09

I have only read the first three chapters, but so far, I find the content clear, direct, and nicely repetitive -- just enough to function as cumulatively self-drilling in the basics of joint ownership. The writer clearly knows what she is talking about, and her enthusiasm comes through to make the read an eager one. I would have rated this a '5,' but I haven't finished the book yet, and who knows what's in store.
