Customer Reviews:
Well-written and enlightening, if self-indulgent........2002-10-05
Any student of architecture, particularly the modern movement, will enjoy reading this work by the mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright and, arguably, the father of modern architecture. In it, Louis Sullivan writes about himself growing from a child into a man, and recounts his personal drive, his fascination with nature, his love of man, bridges, engineering, and buildings, and his desire to create something new without the help of the dusty books of Neo-classicism. Louis Sullivan was never known for his modesty, and the tone of this book is nothing less than self-celebratory, which lends an overall optimistic tone to it. A bonus is the extensive photo plate section - it's interesting to see how his works grew as he did. Unfortunately the plates don't coincide with the text, which is the major flaw in this edition. Overall, though, it's wonderful insight into the mind of this influential architect.
Book Description
In the early 1950s, John Szarkowski photographed the major buildings of turn-of the century Chicago architect Louis Sullivan. Now, in presenting his photographs with excerpts from Sullivans writings and contemporary sources, he captures the mind, the spirit, and the time of this great architect.

The ancient art of marbling--long confined to the endpapers of leather-bound books--is experiencing renewed interest among today's crafters. This nicely presented book covers all the basics of marbling paper and fabric, from making your own tools to working with various types of paints to setting up your workspace. The heart of the book explains the specifics of how to create seven basic marbling patterns and how to troubleshoot technical problems, plus ways to achieve seven specialty techniques, including marbling dimensional objects. The concluding section offers ideas for several projects incorporating marbling, as well as a brief explanation about going into business selling your marbled products.
Customer Reviews:
Great Resource...well worth it........2007-07-08
I learned more from this particular book in the first 30 minutes of reading it, than I did from three other resources on Marbling. I found answers in this book, I couldn't find anywhere else. Great photos of completed works and very simplifed instructions. One section focuses entirely on Preparing to Marble, tools for marbling, set-up, and furthermore is sectioned off by acrylics, watercolor, oil paints and tempera paints. Another section focuses on, patterns, tech. problems, special techniques, marbling on fabrics and resources. I would recommend this book first and foremost before all others.
Marbling Techniques.......2007-01-12
I found this book at the library and searched everywhere for it. Thanks for carrying it. It has all the info I need to start marbling on paper which is an old art form and hard to find info and supplies for.
Practical and readable.......2004-06-15
This is a great introduction to paper marbling - the technique that produces those wonderful swirls, feathery patterns, and colored speckles on paper.
The book is divided very roughly into three parts. The first gives clear recipes and techniques for preparing the marbling media and paints, for choosing and preparing the paper or fabric, and for creating the patterns. The authors are sensitive to the needs of the home crafter, and generally avoid exotic materials and tools. The second part of the book is a visual catalog of marbled patterns with directions for making them yourself. The final section of the book suggests uses for the marbled paper or fabric - boxes, books, and lots of other applications.
This is a how-to book, so leaves without discussion of some topics. There's not a lot of historical discussion, even though marbling has been used for hundreds of years. It doesn't cover more advanced applications, including marbling the edges a book's block of pages. This is for the starting crafter, though, not for professionals or academicians.
This is an enjoyable intro to a very enjoyable craft. If you want to get started in marbling, I'd suggest starting here.

An error that cost me five hours.......2004-05-28
On page 390, Figure 11.15 shows the order of blocks within an MPEG macroblock as Y Cr Cb. This is wrong; the correct order is Y Cb Cr. That error cost me five hours on a very time-critical project.
That's not to say the book is completely useless. But that's a pretty serious error in a book that's supposed to help programmers.
Practical Digital Video With Programming Examples in C.......2003-05-08
I was disappointed. I chose the book hoping to learn how to deal with some of the basic issues in the programming of video.
It would have been nice to get a subpixel motion example as well as how to deal with fields when you are scaling an image
instead I get overviews on compression, VFW and colorspace.
What I am trying to say is that there wasnt much in the way of practical video programming. The other iratation was there was no CD included. So you have transfer every example by hand.
A very practical introduction to digital video.......2001-06-27
It is an interesting book for programmers who want to understand how digital video is processed, starting with simple and comprehensive introduction on different storage media types like magnetic disks, tapes and optical storage. Another interesting part is how video camera work and how computer displays work. These introductions would help in understanding the following sections that cover data compression and image and video processing standards like jpeg, mpeg, and h261. The source code is useful but it needs more explanation for non-highly skilled programmers in C. Overall it is one of the best books that I've read.
An oldie but a goodie.......2000-09-07
The question that needs to be answered about this book is, why would anyone still buy and use a book on computer video that is this old? The answer is that it does a few things better than any other book I know of, and a number of other things well enough that you don't need to look elsewhere.
What are those things? First, its brief coverage of JPEG and MPEG-1 are the best single-chapter coverages from a programming point of view ("where are the bits?"-type stuff) of anything I have ever seen. It isn't enough to create a working JPEG or MPEG codec by itself, but this is the place to start if you need to get the idea. You will then need to turn to much more elaborate coverage [I use _JPEG: Still Image Data Compression Standard_ by William Pennebaker and Joan Mitchell (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1993) for JPEG and _MPEG Video Compression Standard_ by Joan Mitchell, William Pennebaker, Chad Fogg, and Didier LeGall (Chapman & Hall, 1996) for MPEG]. However, this book is a great place to get the big picture from a programming point of view before slogging through the mountain of necessary gritty detail.
Second, this book is the last thing I know of that is in print and addresses the Video for Windows API. This API continues to be the most widely supported API for computer video under Windows, but Microsoft expunged all documentation of it a few years ago -- long before Active Movie was ready to roll. And the current generation of Direct-X based video under Windows is still heavily based on Video for Windows -- it is very helpful to understand that API. The book only has a couple dozen pages on the topic, but it's the only game in town on VfW.
Third, its coverage of color space conversions between RGB and CCIR 601, NTSC, SECAM, and PAL is clear and correct.
Finally, its "your friend the video signal" chapters are as much as a programmer needs to know about such things, and geared to those of us who aren't gearheads.
I have never found Mr. Mattison's code particularly useful. I find his quick discussion of image processing of no value. I have never encountered anyone who needed to know anything about the H.261 video compression standard. And I would not bother to read what he had to say about storage media back in 1994. But there is still enough meat on these bones to make this book one that I turn to with enough regularity that I would buy a replacement copy even now if I ever lost mine.
The text integrates well EE and programming concepts........1998-09-30
The text is a must for all needing fundamental concepts in video hardware and software. The electronics, the color systems, the signal processing algorithms, and the data structures for programming are very well laid in logical order. In addition the diskettes included in the kit contain valuable practical examples in C.

Understanding Health Insurance: A Guide to Professional Billing.......2007-05-08
I did not received the book, I order, still waiting to get the book.
Errors Galore.......2006-03-10
After purchasing the instructor's manual to check my answers, I found errors in every chapter!! From spelling to incorrect percentage amounts. I found myself editing the entire time to find their errors which contradict their text. When I got answers that were not an option in the multiple choice exercises, I would reference the book and the textbook would say I was correct, and the workbook did not. Not worth the money or the time. Extremely exhausting.
find something better to learn from.......2005-12-11
I took a night course which used this textbook. The instructor who is a certified coder and is an instructor at other institutions found MANY misleading instructions. You can be told to do something one way in the book but in real life at a billing job, you would have to do it another way. Also, we found many contradicting statements. They say one thing but do something totally different in their examples. It's really not worth the money.
inked.......2005-10-02
the book i received was in acceptable condition but all the practice pages were completed in ink and i was not notified of this condition of the book. other than that i am satisfied with my purchase.
you will need more than just this book to benefit.......2005-09-04
The book is made to sound as if it would be all you need to become a Medical Billing/Health Insurance specialist. Not a chance. You will need the most current coding manuals to even attempt to complete this course. And even then without the answers you have no way to check your progress. There must be better books, Keep Searching
