I originally bought this book over 20 years ago from Rodale press and lost it in one of my many moves. It is an excellent resource for companion and inter-planting of flowers, many of which are edible, with vegetables. I now garden in containers and the concepts in this book lend themselves easily to this kind of gardening.

I was a bit disappointed in this book. There were some references as to what plants complement each other, and what ones are used to repel certain insects, but those references were too few and buried deep within certain textual descriptions of various plants. Many, if not most, plant references did not even have companion planting information. Then there were the chapters referring to cosmetics, fragrances, and skin care that better belonged in a health and beauty aid book. I will be looking for a different book to supply my needs on companion planting--but this time will preview the book at a bookstore or library so I know what I am getting.

Roses Love Garlic is a great book for novice and experienced gardeners alike. For the beginning gardener, chapter 19 offers many sample garden plans for both small and large plots. The more experienced gardeners might enjoy chapters 12 and 13 which provide projects involve dried flowers and the use of natural dyes. My personal favorite is chapter 7, "Companion planting with flowers and herbs." This book is a must own for anyone interested in chemical free gardening.

This is such a wonderful account of people's experience with St. Therese and the myriad of ways that she uses to show people which direction to go when faced with a difficult decision or whether their petition for a favor has been granted.
I believe in all cases through St. Therese's intercession that everyone's sincere prayers are answered but not always in the way they would expect. Though, I might add in this book of 'Little Stories' it certainly seems that most prayers are answered in the most apparent way.
It is difficult not to be touched to the point of tears when reading and rereading this book which I call 'The Handbook of Heavenly Guidance'!

Shower of Heavenly Roses - inspiring stories.......2005-08-12
All stories in this book serve as inspiration to many to become more and more closer to Jesus through the little flower's intercession. All those whom I shared this book with told me that once they start reading the book, they could not put it down. Some even experience little miracles themselves. And to others, they got to know St. Therese more and now invoke her powerful intercession as well. One lady I gave the book to shared with me that she didn't really know St. Therese that well, but after reading the book, she wanted to have a picture of St. Therese with her little prayers on it. To her amazement, she found a little card with St. Therese' picture on her bedroom, but nothing was printed on it. It was a two fold card but inside was blank. She wished it contain some kind of novena prayers as she would like to start a novena with her. The following day, that same card had the 24 Glory Be's novena inside. When she came to see me before she left for the Philippines, I had the prompting to give her a beautiful 11 x 14 picture of St. Therese. She was just so thrilled to see the picture as she also wished for a bigger picture of St. Therese.

a "little companion".......2005-05-01
Therese of Lisieux's autobiography is a book I love to take with me when I travel or have a long day with a lot of waiting. Elizabeth Ficocelli's book is a lot like that as well -- a book you can either read from cover to cover or, better yet, dip into to see inspirational stories from people of all different backgrounds. I was amazed at how many different kinds of people have experienced graces from Therese, and in all sorts of different circumstances, including weddings, distance of family members, and so forth. I like to read each story, then say a prayer asking that I can receive the grace with the same openness that many of these people did. Final note -- you'll love the story from Tara Lipinski, the Olympic figure skater!

Flowers of Chateau Malmaison.......2003-11-18
I read about Redoute while researching the history of Chateau Malmaison. Malmaison is a small property in Moulis, which is in the Medoc region of Bordeaux in France. Yes, Chateau Malmaison makes wine... their 2000 vintage is fabulous, and worth looking for.
But anyway, Josephine de Beauharnais purchased Malmaison in 1799 for her and Napolean, and in 1800-1802, Malmaison (together with the Tuileries) was the seat of government.
Josephine planted and expanded the rose gardens of the Chateau, and was very interested in natural science. She commissioned Redoute to paint the rose garden of Malmaison (and their lilies, too).
If Redoute's work is interesting to you, you may want to research a little bit about Empress Josephine and Chateau Malmaison. At the very least, consider buying a bottle of 2000 Chateau Malmaison wine... and browse this book in a few years over a glass or two. That would be the next best thing to visiting the rose garden in person.

Pierre-Joseph Redoute was the Audubon of flowers--particularly roses and lilies. His artwork is stunning and he depicts the various varieties of roses in immaculate detail. An absolutely gorgeous book, published by Taschen and printed in Italy, my version is about 5"X 8" page size and the ISBN number is 3-8228-1356-7 (English version).
For the lover of roses, any illustrated book by Pierre-Joseph Redoute will be a treasure to admire for years.

Good book, and it is worth for those who will begin in close-up photography. Simple equipment needed, information about more sophisticated techniques. Some shots are really great, but some are not that thrill. Lou Jabobs Jr. has written lots of photography books and has an awesome background... I don't think he put all his potential on this book.

This autobio is written in simple and straightforward language by the Man In Black himself. Our family has been fans of Cash long before the new Hollywood hit 'Walk the Line' hit cinemas last year. However, this new wave of Cash in the spotlight has reminded us all of his remarkable story. Johnny's simple faith allowed him to beat the 'demons' and live out the rest of His life in truth and always attributing Glory where it was due. June was his guardian angel, if you ask me. God definitely gave him a gift when he brought June into his life. His story is a touching one and will show you the power of prayer and godly people in one's life. An easy read and worth every second spend reading it. =)
Nice collection of anecdotes.......2006-02-22
I read Mr. Cash's second autobiography, Cash, before I read this one, but I still appreciated the additional anecdotes of the times that he lived and performed in, how he got his life on track, and how fervent he was about his Christianity. You can definitely hear that it is the same voice in both books, and they make a nice pair to read together.
I wish he'd delved into his courtship of June, but that's just me being nosy. All in all a nice read and another wonderful memento for his family.
From One Extreme to The Other, Demons to God........2005-09-05
He looked just like an average person when he was young. Later he became a personna to beat all. He fulfilled his destiny to sing God's praises to the convicts in prison and to try to live up to the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.
The Man in Black was asked if he was "going to a funeral" when because he started to wear black outfits when he performed, going back to 1954, was called a troubadour, an English balladeer, like Waylon Jennings. His theme song was 'I Walk The Line,' and he sang many styles in many genres. In the '70s, his career had reached international proportions.
The first J.C. recording I remember liking was 'A Boy Called Sue' and I did love the song 'Shifting, Whispering Sands,' which he also recorded. In 1976, he had a #1 'One Piece At A Time' -- I am wondering if that is the one about putting together a car out of junk parts. His first single recording (not an album) was in 1955. I was told in 2002 that he had made a good recording of 'The Long Black Veil,' one of my favorite ballads. I found it on a Cash CD, taped that song several times and gave the CD to the person who alerted me as to its existence. There is a new movie coming out soon about his life in which he sings 'Ring of Fire.'
In 1982, he made an album produced by Rodney Crowell, one of my favorite non-stars. I had a tape of some of his road songs, and I loved them all; then, foolishly, I sent it to someone I thought might enjoy it. I wish I had been selfish and kept it.
He was a reader: THE ROBE, QUO VADIS, THE SILVER CHALICE, and PILLAR OF IRON influenced him to go to Israel in November, 1971, to make a movie. It was a semi-documentary and it was magical to film on Mount Arabel, overlooking Galilee and in the Church of Beatitudes. He promised God that if he could live through all of the abuse he had perpetrated on his body, he would be his "Superstar" to set a good example for the young.
He tells of a near-death experience after his bypass surgery in 1988, the "essence" of light as he drifted off but the doctors in Nashville worked diligently to save him. He says he was restored to his "senses." "I never forgot that light, and it changed me." Life meant more to him, became very moving just to look at mundane, everyday things.
He felt he'd come "full circle" at a festival in England, back to the "bare bones." pre-stardom, pre-Memphis (SUN records) days. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Florence, Alabama, and the Songwriters' Hall of Fame. He always appeared to be the bad guy, but actually he was very religious despite his long bout with alcoholism. We miss him and June Carter Cash, the mother of his only son, John Carter Cash.
The photo section was nice and we could see both families combined by his marriage into the Carter family. They had a grand spread out home outside of Nashville, and he stayed active with his music and enjoying life as it came. He was a philosopher in many ways, especially in his choice of songs to record.

AN EXCELLENT READ.......2007-02-23
I've always been a fan of Johnny Cash and his music. After seeing "I Walk The Line" with Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix, a real desire to "hear" from John himself came over me. I absolutely loved the movie but found to my surprise that no mention of Ray Cash (Johnny's father) mistreating his son was found in the book. And actually, there were only good things said about Ray.
John told with great clarity of the horror drug addiction brings on a person. It was so sad to read his words about the pain of withdrawal but how his life changed when he truly began living the Christian life, along with the help of June Carter and her family.
I heartily recommend this book to one and all.

Photographic Indictment of Aparthied.......2004-03-06
South African documentary photographer Ernest Cole critically subverts the operations of the archive. Cole has the ability to officially change his racial status from black to colored, due to ambiguities in the government's methods of documenting and systematizing racial identification, in order to gain access to broader strata of society for his photographic project. Cole's black-and-white photographs depict passbook arrests, police inspections, dehumanizing conditions in the diamond mines, "white only" signage in the city--images that would have been subject to censoring.
Cole, when stopped and questioned by authorities, masqueraded his photographs as documents of youth crime rather than as records of the violence of institutional apartheid policy. In this way, Cole's negatives passed archivally. Presenting his work in the guise of documentary visual policing, Cole was able to leave South Africa with his negatives and go to the United States, where House of Bondage was published. This operation of critical camouflaging, of archival mimicry as a critical practice in the realm of photographic production, will fuel this examination of the ways in which the body is represented archivally in contemporary photography from South Africa.

ENJOYABLE CONCLUSION!.......2003-05-01
Who is that cover guy? I have tracked him on more than several covers. Best part of the book [grin]
The murder mystery of Frannie Granger, "Mom Fran" rolls on - a bit light on clues and threats but nicely damaging.
Tessa comes across as a bit wishy, being under her mother's thumb a bit much and is willing to settle for an affair?
Will McClain came across as a stronger character, enough to tone down Sheriff Fielder. Logan Fielder tended to mellow out in this story. Got a bit of a chuckle on Amanda Jennings attempts to pick up again with Will. Did she think she was still back in high school?
Then there was Ray Jennings snobbish attempts to put down Will and others in his town. Joleen Berber finally got in her two cents worth and settled everyone's hash.
Loved the final tie-ins that brought together Jed Louis and his wife Gwyn, Emmy-M, Riley Gray Wolf and Alanna & Will and finally Tessa. They all had learned the value of the family circle.
The mystery was pretty decent, the action was good but the romances were kind of like wet noodles. I have found that denial and frustration lends to a more passionate build-up and makes you want more. These three "ladies"? just didn't promote very strong romantic feelings. [The characters not the writers]
The series is a good read and will recommend but not keep.
The perfect finale to this mini-series.......2001-06-13
Texas Ranger Will McClain learns two months after the newspaper published the story that the bones of Frannie Granger were found near Uncertain, Texas. Unable to ignore what happened to his beloved foster mother, Will travels to Uncertain where he stops archeologist Tessa Lang, discoverer of the remains of Frannie,from continuing her dig.
The real shock to Will is to realize Sheriff Fielder believes his foster brother Jed Louis killed Frannie. Will refuses to believe that and plans to learn the truth about who killed Frannie. Still, Will admits all the evidence makes it seem as Jed is guilty, and though it alienates him from his foster sister Emma, he will do the job, even arresting his foster brother. However, to his and her amazement, Will and Tessa soon fall in love, but even that will not stop Will from his obsession to find out who killed Frannie.
The Third and final Tale in the "Return to East Texas" miniseries, A MAN OF HIS WORD, is a powerful climax to a strong romantic suspense mini-series. The story line combines a warm relationship drama with an engaging police procedural. Lead characters and other cast members return to round out a terrific book and trilogy.

Fans of the Return To East Texas series will enjoy this final segment, A MAN OF HIS WORD by Eva Gaddy. When Will McClain, the third foster child of Frannie Granger, returns to Uncertain, Texas, loose ends are tied up and the mystery of Frannie's death, as well as Emmy Monday's birth, are finally resolved.
Remembered more as the prodigal son than an admirable character, Texas Ranger Will McClain arranges to investigate his foster mother's murder twenty years after the fact when an archeologist unearths Frannie's bones. His foster brother stands accused of the murder and its up to Will to prove Jed's innocence, despite the circumstantial evidence. Questions of loyalty to family and to one's sworn career make Will's job even more challenging. And there's also the matter of the gorgeous red head with the temper to match that wants back on the archeological site.
Tessa curses the day she uncovered the old bones on her Caddo Indian burial mound dig. The project that was supposed to allow her to complete her degree and insure her career comes to a screeching halt while local law enforcement crawls over the site and refused to allow her to continue her work. As time slips away, so do her grant and her future. Then, on the day the sheriff finally agrees to let her back on site, the Texas Ranger had to arrive and put her on hold again.
However, Tessa gets her wish, in a round about way, when Will visits the site and realizes the devastation the sheriff's department has wrought. The site looks like a nuclear explosion rather than the scene of a crime, and valuable evidence could have been destroyed. Consequently, Will convinces Tessa to work for him, excavating the crime scene while her students return to the Indian Mounds. As their feelings draw them closer together, however, career and dreams prove to be a conflict of interest.
This intricate tangle of murder, lies and love creates a satisfying conclusion to the Return To East Texas series. As family ties and loyalties are questioned, Gaddy gracefully questions the meaning of family and arrives at rather unconventional conclusion, proving the bond of love strong than blood. The growth of the heroine as she learns to define her own values, based on her own desires rather than her family's values, also provides a sound lesson. And I must admit a soft spot for a hero not afraid to admit his emotions long before the heroine resolves her own feelings. A MAN OF HIS WORD is highly recommended.

Remembered more as the prodigal son than an admirable character, Texas Ranger Will McClain arranges to investigate his foster mother's murder twenty years after the fact when an archeologist unearths Frannie's bones. His foster brother stands accused of the murder and its up to Will to prove Jed's innocence, despite the circumstantial evidence. Questions of loyalty to family and to one's sworn career make Will's job even more challenging. And there's also the matter of the gorgeous red head with the temper to match that wants back on the archeological site.
Tessa curses the day she uncovered the old bones on her Caddo Indian burial mound dig. The project that was supposed to allow her to complete her degree and insure her career comes to a screeching halt while local law enforcement crawls over the site and refused to allow her to continue her work. As time slips away, so do her grant and her future. Then, on the day the sheriff finally agrees to let her back on site, the Texas Ranger had to arrive and put her on hold again.
However, Tessa gets her wish, in a round about way, when Will visits the site and realizes the devastation the sheriff's department has wrought. The site looks like a nuclear explosion rather than the scene of a crime, and valuable evidence could have been destroyed. Consequently, Will convinces Tessa to work for him, excavating the crime scene while her students return to the Indian Mounds. As their feelings draw them closer together, however, career and dreams prove to be a conflict of interest.
This intricate tangle of murder, lies and love creates a satisfying conclusion to the Return To East Texas series. As family ties and loyalties are questioned, Gaddy gracefully questions the meaning of family and arrives at rather unconventional conclusion, proving the bond of love strong than blood. The growth of the heroine as she learns to define her own values, based on her own desires rather than her family's values, also provides a sound lesson. And I must admit a soft spot for a hero not afraid to admit his emotions long before the heroine resolves her own feelings. A MAN OF HIS WORD is highly recommended.

I wish I had read this book when my husband was dying of ALS. It should be a must for everyone who'd been given a Medical Death Sentance and their family who have to stand by helplessly while their loved one diminishes and then dies before their eyes. It's compelling and would at least ease the sorrow that becomes part of their life.

This book makes you realize that Morrie was such an amazing person. It makes you wish you had known him. But it is also more a book for a person who knows he is dying. Or for someone who loves someone who is dying, you could read it together. It offers positive thinking for a person who has already accepted his imminent death.

The shipping to Guam was VERY FAST although it was only USPS priority mail. If you are a Mitch Albom fan, this book is literally in Morrie's own words. So the style is not quite the same. If you just want a little more in depth of him (Morrie), this is must. My 17 yr old has to do a project quarterly and read all of Albom's books, and this is the last one.

Reading Tuesday's With Morrie touched me deeply, since I struggle everyday with a congenital heart problem--and I never know when the next day may be my last. Morrie's wisdom, humor and expriences is brought through from Mitch Albom's terrific writing. Morrie's words cannot be more insightful and wise as my body is beginning to break down....I re-read his book quite often, so I can feel uplifted.
This is truly a powerful learning tool for those who know people who are suffering, or are dying, or who just wish to know more about "why we're here".
There is one thing they didn't mention, perhaps was edited out-- We live on in immortality through the memories, experiences and love of the ones we leave behind. [and in some cases, in books, essays, quotes, music etc. that are produced by us]
One will underand from reading Tuesdays With Morrie is that Death and Life are intertwined, and that Death is nothing to be afraid of. Not even the pain of death is something to fear, as long as you are ready to face it.

If you've read Tuesdays with Morrie, then this has to be a companion read. They cover the same material but In His Own Words definitely makes you, as the reader, think of your own immortality and how to better yourself so that in the end, you will have contributed all that is important to you.
