We all want true relaxation when we come home--a place to put our feet up, close our eyes, and ignore the world outside. Too often, the "stuff" of day-to-day living interferes with that relaxation, but Atlanta Bartlett is determined to help us all create a personal space where comfort and peace are the focal points. In The Comforts of Home, the gorgeous photos, specific suggestions, and unique styles work together to get you started creating a special haven. Five different decorating styles are highlighted. Whether your taste runs to elegant or eclectic, you're sure to find one that resonates. Bartlett encourages the use of color on walls and ceilings as a focal point--when walls are a delicate blue or pale pink, additional art becomes unnecessary. Unusual uses for items are also encouraged: a bright sari drapes a bedroom window to beautiful effect, while plain and chunky glass tumblers work nicely as vases. Collections of beloved items are shown off to advantage in settings such as wide staircases, kitchen walls, and fireplace mantles. Neutral colors are enhanced with a variety of textures like velvet, leather, satin, rough concrete, and sheepskin to present a living room that combines luxury and simplicity. For every room in the house, Bartlett shows that "less is more" when the "less" has special qualities and sentimental value. With a cozy blanket, family photos, and your favorite chair arranged in front of a sunny window, you may find it difficult to do anything but relax! --Jill Lightner

Book Description

The Comforts of Home offers the inspiration you need to stamp your own style on your surroundings, to showcase your personal taste and so create a relaxed, welcoming environment in every room of your home--and even in your garden!

Taking you through the home room by room and out onto patios and terraces, Atlanta Bartlett shows--in five unique chapters--how to introduce a comfortable look. "Relaxed Simplicity" explains how to soften and update a stark, cool interior by adding bright splashes of color, interesting textural effects and clean, curving lines. Pretty floral fabrics make a subtle comeback in the "Relaxed Romantic" chapter. Used sparingly and combined with pale, uncluttered interiors, these fabrics add a fresh new feel to any room. Those who crave the unashamedly sensuous-embroidered silks and satins or crisp cotton sheets--will love "Relaxed Sensuality," while glamour aficionados who long to surround themselves with elegance will revel in the fin-de-siecle carved wooden mirrors and crystal in "Relaxed Elegance." And if you can't stop collecting-junk shop finds, holiday mementos, beautiful antique clothing--"Relaxed Eclectic" will show you how your treasures can become the inspiration for a truly chic interior.

Full of achievable, affordable decorating ideas, The Comforts of Home provides ideas for an enjoyable retreat no matter what your style preferences--a haven that is a restorative for all the senses.

4 out of 5 stars Uncluttered Romantic Style.......2005-11-11

I love romantic, cottage country style decorating. But usually associate it with with an over-abundance of Stuff. On the other hand I found the minimalist style overly cold and too contemporary and modern for my tastes.

This book takes the best of both styles...the romantic, soft look of the one...and the uncluttered, open spaces of the other...and blends them together. Creating a pleasing fusion of what I would have thought were two incompatible styles.

It's wonderful to see that uncluttered and open spaces don't have to look cold and barren, but can be soft, elegant, and romantic instead.

Looking through this book inspires me to unclutter my home and create open spaces that are more suitable to the life I am trying to live.

4 out of 5 stars My kind of romantic.......2002-04-27

I enjoyed this book because it appealed to my sense of style. I love modern decoration and variations on it also (ie modern country, cottage, ethnic, etc) and this did a very good job of adding a romantic feel without it being fussy. Great pictures and wonderful ideas. A-

3 out of 5 stars Not what the title suggests.......2002-02-27

I give this book 3 stars for lovely photography. But it does not contain many real-world decorating tips and certainly not those in what I would call the romantic style, as the cover claims.

Mostly, it is about how to inject a little color and freshness into extremely minimalist and modern rooms. The author does this by using things like a pair of glittery shoes on an old stairway. She's also found of huge gilt mirrors leaned on walls and dressmaker's dummies.

The pages are beautiful, but the ideas are not practical. And with the cold minimalist backdrops, not what I would consider romantic either.

It's an interesting read, if you like interior design, but the style is not very accessible. It is nothing like Shabby Chic or Cottage. I found it pretentious, impractical, and not at all relaxed.

1 out of 5 stars The contents do not seem to go with the title.......2001-12-21

The book promised me comfort. What I see are very chilly rooms in cool whites and pastels. Nothing comfortable and snuggly here. And there is a lot of repetition in terms of the rooms shown. Also no ideas that I can use. Big waste of money.

2 out of 5 stars The sames photos everywhere!.......2001-08-30

I was known that it would not be a decorating book -- but I was expecting a lot of inspiration to make my home an enviroment of peace and relaxing. And, finally, I was upset and disappointed. I think the author registered only one house's interior -- the same furniture, rooms in different angles every page. There was a pair of pink shoes that appeared three times in different positions, as if their owner was relaxing in same place of this house! Three times! Maybe the photographer wanted to use all the pictures he took, without editing the material very well. I felt the I lost money and time. Sorry.

    Book Description

This gorgeous new book by Adele Earnshaw teaches readers how to colorfully combine their favorite nostalgic items like handmade quilts, china and lace with small songbirds or kittens and bathe them all in beautiful sunlight.

Earnshaw provides guidelines for developing any heartwarming memory into a lovely composition. First she illustrates how to render the main subject of each painting, then shows how to add a "tender touch" by adding birds, cats or other adorable animals. Each step is shown through invaluable mini-demos with finished examples. The final chapter features 15 complete painting demonstrations that utilize each of the individual lessons.

3 out of 5 stars Good basic reference.......2002-12-25

It is debatable whether the "expert" mentioned in the introduction will find it useful in finding "specific facts". It is really for the novice and casual user who does not need technical or extensive discussions. The alphabetical arrangement puts it in the class of a simple dictionary or one volumn cyclopedia. It is arranged well and well indexed unfortunately there is no bibliography to guide the reader to more in depth study--since Mr. Mora is apparantly French this might not be helpful to an American audience. It might also explain why his timeline erroneously places the end of the American Civil war as 1864---no, April 9, 1865. To be fair many American students probably don't know that today. It is puzzling that he mentions Einstein's Theory of Relativity in 1905 but not the Photoelectric Effect Theory which descibes the phenomenon that makes a Light Meter possible. Oh well. This is a good book for a quick, simple reference and does well within its size limitations. His european perspective is worth having the book, though the serious student will need to look elsewhere for thorough dicussion of the topics. I don't regret buying it and would recomed it for its purpose.

5 out of 5 stars INTERESTING AND INVALUABLE.......2001-08-14

The author, Gilles Mora, a former editor of "Cahiers de Photographie" called his book a "guide." I think it is more of an encyclopedia. Divided, as it is, into the categories of "Who, When, Where & What," the reader can easily find the principal photographers from 1839 til today ("Who"), the moment of greatest significance for a particular style or method of photography ("When"), the cities, countries and continents in which a movement was centered ("Where") and the nature and origins of the style or technique (What").

For example, we learn that "collage" which had long been used in decorative arts, was actually first used in fine art when Picasso pasted oilcloth onto his 1912 painting "Still Life With Chair Caning." We learn a useful, simple definition of collage and how some modernist painters/photographers have used it including David Hockney and Robert Frank in the 1980's. We learn that in 1854, a man named Andre-Adolphe-Eugene Disderi patented something called a "carte-de-visite" which is a portrait glued to a piece of cardboard the size of a traditional visiting card....like the ones forever being left on hallway trays in the novels of Edith Wharton and Henry James.

There also terms and phrases we might have heard but, perhaps, did not understand fully like "contact sheet" or "daguerreotype," "The New York School" or "Photojournalism" and "Camera Obscura" to name just a few.

The book is crammed full of wonderful bits and pieces of information, interestingly written and invaluable for the photographer, the photography collector or the hobbyist. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

      Product Description

From the Publisher PhotoSpeak is the first reference to provide satisfying, easily accessible information not only about the diverse techniques that have been explored since photography was invented more than 150 years ago but also about the ideas and the influences that have been central to those making and interpreting photographs. The complexities of photographic techniques from the calotype to the photogram to digital imaging are explained in clear, straightforward language, indicating how the processes work and how they shape the appearance of the resulting image. The international styles and movements within photography, from Pictorialism to postmodernism, are described using the same effective who-when-where-what format that has made the other volumes in this series (AntiqueSpeak, ArtSpeak, and ArtSpoke) so useful. Photography's many distinctive contributions to various subjects such as art, fashion, science, and travel are intelligently explored. And the aesthetic concepts and critical terms that have been used to explain (and occasionally obscure) photography over the last century and a half are demystified.

Ms. Melissa C. Williams is quite an entrepreneur. I know her personally and had to buy her book. She is such a professional in all her business dealings. I read her book. It is outstanding. I knew it would be a hit, because she has a champion-aura about her. Ms. Williams is the only entrepreneur that I know who can come up with consistent great ideas that actually work. She has successfully marketed fliers in 7-11 type stores and had over 70% response rates. The norm is a 1% to 3% response rate. I am so proud to be among her circle. Bill Phillips, Asbury Park, NJ

            Description:
The distribution of localized pressure peaks and the resulting contact forces over the hand surface are investigated through measurements performed under applications of different combinations of hand grip and push forces in the 0-75N range. Three different cylindrical handles of 30, 40 and 48mm are used to measure the hand-induced forces and distributed pressures using a capacitive pressure-sensing mat wrapped around the handle. The data acquired with 10 adult male subjects are analyzed to derive the contact force distributions over the hand surface as functions of the grip and push forces, and the handle size. The peak pressures occurring in different regions of the hand surface are also derived and examined in view of the reported pressure-discomfort and pressure-pain threshold limits. For this purpose, the hand surface is split into five different zones. The results show that contact pressures of considerable magnitudes develop within the hand-handle interface, while the magnitudes of peak pressures strongly depend upon the handle size, grip and push forces. Application of high grip and push forces causes the peak pressures to exceed the discomfort threshold values, specifically for the thenar eminence. The peak pressures attained for the 48mm handle under moderate levels of grip and push forces exceed the suggested sustained pressure values for the preservation of working efficiency. The results also suggest that the mean peak interface pressure for a given handle size can be expressed as a linear combination of grip and push forces. Furthermore, the proportions of hand-handle contact force developed within individual zones also vary linearly with grip and push forces, and strongly depend upon the handle size. The results show that the contact force developed in the vicinity of proximal phalanges of the digits and the palm is generally attributed to the push force, while forces at the fingers surface are caused by the gripping action. Owing to the difficulties associated with the measurement of interface pressures, the proposed relationships could be conveniently applied to obtain an estimate of the mean values of peak pressures on the basis of directly measurable grip and push forces. Relevance to industry: The methodology proposed in this study and the results could be applied to estimate the peak hand-handle interface pressures for operators of hand-held tools, which have been associated with discomfort, pain and musculoskeletal disorders. The suggested methods provide objective means to assess the magnitudes and locations of high pressure peaks that may cause pressure-induced discomfort and pain, and thereby the stresses imposed on the hand. The distribution of pressure and the contact force in the hand-handle interface as a function of the handle size could lead to advancement of knowledge on the handle size issue. Furthermore, the results are expected to enhance our understanding of the biodynamic response of the human hand-arm, while operating power tools.

You must have seen them. Groups of them waiting for their heavy silver metal boxes to come off the luggage carousel at Heathrow, Rome, Paris, Tel Aviv, Johannesburg. They carry huge amounts of equipment into the world's worst hellholes. They are always trying to get into a place when everyone else is trying to get out. They sit, red-eyed and exhausted, staring out of the windows of a plane as it circles over yet another burning African capital, wondering what will greet them when they arrive at an airport filled with soldiers in camouflage uniform. They are journalists-the fragile uncertain antennae of our electronic civilisation.

                3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars.......2004-04-16

A solid beginners tome. Gives good advice on how to drum up business. I always say if you can get a couple of good ideas form a book that help you make some money, you've got your money's worth. One thing I really like are the true story tidbits inserted every so often. I really liked the idea on p. 94 and have begun to use this one myself.

One of the weaknesses of a beginners book like this is that all too often they dont explain the numbers. Real estate is all about the numbers. No formulas to help you determine if a certain deal is actually good or not.

I have been reading these reviews and I just wanted to comment on them. I have yet to read this book but the topic is realistic. Flipping or wholesaling properties is very easy (once you have thoroughly researched your market), lucrative and legal. You can very well get properties well below market value. If you arrange the financing for your buyer and they have their exit strategy defined you can put them in the property without any money of their own. It is not some pie in the sky. It is the reality for many people. Granted you will not get the nicest property in the highest demand area, but you will get the property that has enough wrong with it to scare off the homebuyer who wants a pristine perfect house. There are two parts to the brain, the thinker and the prover, if the thinker wants to believe it impossible and think all the stories are made up, the prover will set out to prove them right. I don't know if this book has good info or not but the answers are out there and the deals are out there.

                1 out of 5 stars Rehashed [stuff]..........2003-08-30

If you've never read a book on real estate investing, I would recommend a more seriously written book on the subject, not this get rich quick book. I have read Robert Shemin's earlier books and this is a rehash of them. Try "investing in real estate" or "the unofficial guide to real estate investing". These two books are very well written and don't make real estate investing sound like a late night infomercial, as, unfortunately Robert Shemin's books do.

2 out of 5 stars Little information except how readers can give author more $.......2003-03-08

The author structures most chapters around vague generalities. Each chapter contains several pitches to get readers to subscribe to the authors pay site for the "real" information. Secondly the author repeats himself so many times if you cut the book in half and gave each half to a friend neither friend would miss anything.
The book is clearly a get rich scheme for the author akin to stuffing envelopes. The two stars it does get are for being semi motivational even though it lacks content.

3 out of 5 stars Not what the LA TImes promised. maybe ok for 1st timer.......2003-02-11

I have a few other real estate books and read a great review of this in the LA Times, (thinking they have been right before). This book does have a few good ideas and resent them well. The one thing I thought Robert would cover is HOW he secures some of his financing and different financing options. It felt a bit self-serving when he devoted too much space to the legal service he uses and now represents. I may look at his earlier works before I buy again. I would really love to hear from others on definitive real estate investing books.
