Book Description

"I came to see the buildings as fossils of a time past. These buildings were used during the Civil War. The men were all dead, but the buildings were still here, left behind as the city grew around them....The passing of the buildings was for me a great event. It didn't matter so much whether they were of architectural importance. What mattered to me was that they were about to be destroyed. Whole blocks would disappear. An entire neighborhood. Its few last loft-occupying tenants were being evicted, and no place like it would ever be built again. The streets involved were among the oldest in New York and when sections of some were closed by the barriers of the demolition men, it meant they would never be opened again." (Danny Lyon). In 1967, Danny Lyon returned to New York City, having just finished The Bikeriders (Macmillan, 1968). He was twenty-five. Living in a loft on the corner of Beekman and Williams Streets in Downtown Manhattan, Lyon saw that half the buildings on Beekman Street were boarded up, about to be demolished. That year an incredible sixty acres of mostly nineteenth century buildings were slated for demolition, all below Chambers Street. The seven-acre site where the Twin Towers would eventually stand was being cleared, a new ramp added to the Brooklyn Bridge, Pace University expanded, and the Washington Market was being moved to the Bronx. Much of the Lower West Side was being turned into rubble. Lyon thought of the title The Destruction of Lower Manhattan first, and then made a record of each building before it was demolished. The book was released by Macmillan Publishers in 1969, and remaindered a few years later; the copies sold for one dollar each. It has been a collector's item ever since. Thirty-eight years after these photographs were made, many of them are the only record that survives of entire blocks of mainly nineteenth century buildings that once lined Fulton Street, and West Street along the Hudson. Because of the disaster that would strike the city a generation later, New Yorkers have taken on a renewed and fervent interest in the architecture of their city. This work is a major contribution to that new world. For Lyon, these buildings in their last days standing were the embodiment of a beauty and pathos that people walking by in the street seldom noticed at the time. Those feelings were preserved in the photographs that today survive exactly as the young author intended, as a memory and a record of what was.

5 out of 5 stars Doing what Great Photographs have always done.......2005-07-20

These photographs were originally published in 1967 and at the time, they represented the norm for solid earnest photography. that is, the technique and understated design stood in service of the images. By the way, I've seen the actual photographs. The Museum of the City of New York just opened a show of these same images. So one reacts not to the photo but to the subject: these now long gone buildings, and the even older signs of a long past life (for example a calendar from 1951 on the wall of one of the shabby lofts).

This work stands in sharp contrast to the current trend in photography .... a typical current show will feature large scale images, usually in color, always over printed. I will be standing in front of a life sized and unflattering portrait of a person - and wonder why the image was selected. After noting the skin texture (always more present than in life) I walk away with... nothing. Not so with these. I first saw this book in 1970 when in a sculpture class in Cooper Union. Although I had not seen the book in at least 25 years, I never forgot them.

Buy the book - it will be one book you will look at for sure 25 years hence.

You mean I don't have to pay $300 dollars for a used copy of this on auction? Great. That's what they've been selling for before this reissue. It's about time. I never thought I'd own a copy until now, without paying a small ransom.

3 out of 5 stars It was partly ok........2007-08-17

Ok, Christopher hart is not the best in the manga business. I think this book is more for expanding your horizon of villians, not teaching you how to draw them. I have to admit though, it showed me some things I didn't think of before. It also showed that some of the harder aspects of drawing are not so hard if you break them apart. Three stars.

1 out of 5 stars more or less useless.......2005-08-01

However unfairly, I believe that it is necessary to be able to draw manga before publishing a book instructing others how to do it.

Unfortunately, the art in this book is very westernised (not to mention ugly) and most of it does not even approach a "manga" style, and threfore is pretty much useless to most aspiring manga artists.

Avoid this book (and all other members of the same series by Chris Hart) at all costs.

2 out of 5 stars As an instructional volume...it's pretty mediocre........2005-06-15

I've been hosting anime drawing workshops at local libraries, and I've always been on the lookout for books I can recommend to kids interested in continuing to draw in the anime and manga styles. So I checked out this book at a library recently with the intention of compiling a new list of drawing books that I would recommend to the people attending the workshops this summer.
This book will not be on that list.
Quite frankly, despite the fact that there are several very talented artists who contributed to this book, it's lousy. Most of the artwork featured is either mediocre or *not* done in the manga style Hart claims the book revolves around; in fact, seeing how Mr. Hart's art numbers among the worst in the book, I'm skeptical as to whether or not he is a credible source regarding non-Western artistry at all. (His Western-style cartooning is really quite good, so I'm rather surprised at his ineptitude in this field, myself.)
As I said, there are some very good pieces in this book as well--they really stand out when you see them--but they simply make for good references, as most of the "step-by-step" diagrams are about four steps long, adding up to a pretty useless instruction method overall. The proposed "villains" in the book, in fact, are rather one-dimensional from a character perspective, but I can understand how it would be far easier to resort to stereotypical black-and-white personalities than to flesh out a really interesting villain (because, well, that wasn't what this book was supposed to be about, so I can't really hold it against him.)
Most, if not all, pictures were colored digitally--something that most people won't have access to--and a number of them were printed with rough and jagged edges as if they had been drawn with the pencil tool in a Photoshop (or even paint. Strangely enough, these rougher works are actually some of the better ones in the book, if I recall correctly.)

Please, if you're interested in drawing in the anime or manga style, find another book. If you're interested in Western comics, check out Hart's other work (or the Marvel/DC instructional books, which are quite good.) But if it's manga style you're looking to learn about...then this is NOT the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful if you Already Know How to Draw Anime/Manga.......2005-05-05

I'm a manga artist myself. I don't make them, but I do a lot of fan-based art and such.
Anyway, I do a lot of evil characters. Since I've already developed a talent and a style, I just use this to perfect my villains. Books by Hart like the Fantasy one he did (helped me do dragons an' demons better. And I learned how to make gnolls ^_^) helped a lot. As did this one. Only buy if you know what you're doing. Otherwise, How To Draw Manga series is right up your alley.

3 out of 5 stars Mainly American Style Art though..........2005-01-26

I had mixed reviews about this book, but I had to admit the reason why I bought this book was because of the title. Afterall, no one has drawn a book totally dedicated to villians.

First of all, the book starts off by introducing you to drawing villian’s eyes, which is rather helpful since eyes are one of the important aspects when drawing villains. There’re also the “Good” vs “Bad” expressions and some explanations to go along. Then, there’re various types of baddies, from fighter chicks to medieval villains, and not to forget villains such as monsters, demons and aliens.

Unfortunately, there are mostly one or two examples for most villains, which can be rather limiting if you’re trying to draw the same type of villain in a different way. However, I think this is where your imagination will come in. Some of the arts also strike me as rather kiddy (or perhaps, it's meant to be more for children), although some of the full-page color artworks are very nice.

In addition, I’ve also noticed that most of the examples have a certain “American” (instead of Japanese”) style to it. For the serious mangaka-wannabe though, you are better off getting more “technical” and “Japanese-Style” books such as the “How to Draw Manga” Series, but overall, this book will make a nice reference or resource book for people interested drawing American cartoon.

In college I owned a Nikon El. Recently, 20+ years later, I have been buying used Leica equipment and was hoping that this book would teach me something new but it has not. The book is probably good for the absolute beginner who might rate it a '4' but offers little to even the moderately experienced. Lacks pictures of the most important lens problems (pg 56) like fungus and de-cemented elements (which is hard to see). Matter of factly says that de-cementing can be fixed by lens technicians by cleaning and re-gluing but in my experience they sure don't want to do it and if you can talk them into it they want an incredible price so why is this problem not noted by the book? Overall the advice is very general. Discusses use of a beat up a old camera (pg 31) as acceptable, though in my experience, even a new camera that had shutter problems would jam at the worst times missing the shot so I should have immediately replaced it. This sort of book should really be written by a camera repair technician wanting to help out used camera buyers.

Sorcerers and wizards are not the only practitioners of the magical arts. Esoteric orders of arcane initiates push the boundaries of magic beyond the limits of tomes and blood. The Abbey of Green Steel trains monks that pack a magical punch, the Servants of Decay subvert civilization with dark rites, and The School Behind the Veil teaches warriors to use divination to best their opponents. Arcana: Societies of Magic details six different organizations that employ unique styles of magic to achieve their ends. The description of each society includes information of the group's history, goals, hierarchy, and leaders, as well as a map of its headquarters. New skills, feats, spells and prestige classes make it a complete package. Like Green Ronin's award-winning Freeport series, Arcana: Societies of Magic can be used in any fantasy campaign.

"Reflections: A Columnist's Journey Through Time" reads like a personal journal, honest and intimate in Jarmy's often poetic way with language. Readers follow her as she shares her will - thought out reactions to both personal and public events. By the end of the book, readers have gained entry into the mind and heart of the author. She journeys from in long marriage woman past fifty and finally is in deep and satisfying new marriage. All the time, readers discover the drama of national and local happenings as seen through the eyes of a woman, caring and passionate about freedom, education and human relationships. In columns from 1992 to the present, we became involved with reactions to present-day dangers, the sorrows of September 11, 1991 and the war in Iraq. But before that, the author writes of less traumatic events: a kind of Ya-Ya Sisterbook of her long-time friendships, travels to vacations via ship, air and automobile, memories of New York City and the Bronx and a whole host of family interactions, some lovely and some sad. Quote: "Reflections" as my column is called, reveals my opinions and worries, my musing about the world of nature and the nature of man.
