Book Description

"We cannot continue to accept the view that when times are good we will prosper and when times are bad we will suffer. . . . We must move from a business of commissioned services to one of direct participation in all our clients' endeavors, where productive participation establishes us as trusted partners, the currency for a continuing relationship." —John E. Harrigan and Paul R. Neel

In their drive to compete effectively in the emerging world economic order, today's enterprise organizations are undergoing a period of radical redesign, restructuring, and redefinition. As they do so, they are coming to rely more and more upon design professionals to help them build their roads to the future. This means that unlimited opportunities now await the architect who can look beyond the everyday aspects of professional practice and learn as much as possible about his or her clients' worlds. But forging enduring partnerships with clients requires more than just proven design skills on the part of an architect. Today's successful architect is as much a business executive as an artist. He or she is conversant in an array of core business skills—including marketing, client relations, leadership, strategic management, and others—rarely covered in professional education programs.

Based, in large part, upon Professor John E. Harrigan's innovative executive program for architects at California Polytechnic State University, The Executive Architect fills that critical gap in professional education. In addition to schooling designers in a wide range of crucial business concepts, tools, and techniques, it provides a complete blueprint for transforming a practice from one based on the fulfillment of commissioned services to one based on an ongoing engagement with every aspect of clients' worlds—their goals, risks, opportunities, and unique corporate cultures.

In creating this innovative guide, authors Harrigan and Neel drew on the experiences of more than a dozen of the nation's most respected executive architects, including Arthur Gensler, Charles Luckman, and Judy Rowe. Throughout the book, these industry leaders offer their insights, advice, and guidance on a wide range of topics, from leadership to benchmarking, from forming strategic partnerships to building knowledge base systems. Also featured throughout the book are numerous instructive case studies. Based on the Harvard Business School model, these studies present a broad array of successful decision-making examples.

The Executive Architect helps designers acquire the skills needed to expand beyond the boundaries of current practice and to exploit the unlimited opportunities and challenges of doing business in the new world economic order.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't read for building architecture, but was still useful.......2001-04-16

I found this remaindered for only five bucks. I read it not as a building architect, but as someone interested in what other creative/engineering disciplines had to say about creative projects that I could apply to web projects.

The authors needed a better editor, that's for sure. There's lots of awkward writing here, and the interviews with architects are virtually unreadable, rambling, and vague.

Those involved in web or software consulting will find not a lot new here--have the issues of client relations and creative services marketing really not had this kind of treatment before?

4 out of 5 stars Practical and Clear.......2007-01-09

This book, as with all Linton books, is a great resource for any designer. It is geared more toward a larger firm though, in which case there is probably a marketing team involved or hired for marketing endeavors. To a marketer, or even an experienced designer, Marketing for Architects and Designers is a beginner's view of marketing and should be followed up with some of the recommended texts at the back of this book.

    Book Description

This book is not designed to explore well-known marketing concepts. Instead, it is intended to look at applied, practical, and proven marketing approaches in a proactive manner that is designed to improve the nature and quality of architectural practice as well as that of other design professionals. It is primarily about the services offered by architectural and small design firms, but it also has as much to do with the notion of change within the design professions as it does with marketing concepts. As a result, the reader may find some thoughts and ideas somewhat provocative, but is intended primarily to bring a new perspective on the practice. Because of changing trends and rapidly changing market conditions, we must, as design professionals, prepare ourselves to communicate and interact with a much broader segment of society, even those who are not potential clients.

    5 out of 5 stars A Creative's Must Have!.......2006-10-20

This book is a wake up call to the Creative! It completely opened my eyes to the many things to think about and plan for when leaving your secure job, and going out on your own. Extremely well written, with a plethora of knowledge on the subject. A complete eye opener. A MUST HAVE for the Creative who is planning on going freelance, or starting their own business. Very informative and necessary to read in order to succeed on your own. Very exciting, I could barely put it down!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful for a new freelancer.......2006-08-24

I'm starting a sole-proprietor (one-person) freelance design business and I have found this book to be extremely helpful. It manages to be realistic about what to expect while also providing encouragement that if you prepare well and work smart, you have the opportunity to reach your financial goals. The book has made me consider contracts carefully and has given me valuable suggestions (for example, setting up standards such as "I can't accept jobs for which I can bill less than 8 hours' work"), thinking about what kinds of clients I want to attract in my business, and so on. It has important points to consider if you are locating your business outside a large metropolitan area. I recommend it for anyone who is starting out - or considering starting out - on a solo creative business.

5 out of 5 stars Foote's books address different business models.......2004-08-28

According to the author's website at http://www.creativebusiness.com/books.lasso The Business Side of Creativity addresses freelancing and the basics of pricing, selling, and running a SMALL design or marketing communications business. The Creative Business Guide to Running a Graphic Design Business focuses on the management of a MULTIPERSON organization. The website gives a summary on the various chapters of each book.

    3 out of 5 stars Worth $20.00.......2004-08-09

I started out excited about this book, then quickly realized much of what the author had to say was outdated at best, not the best advice on numerous occasions, but yet the book contained some valuable information. A bit stoneage as far as business marketing practices. One hundred pages on setting up your own studio/small business with personnel (No, thank you). If working as a freelancer in the graphics or copy arenas is your thing, its worth paying $20.00 to get something out of it.

5 out of 5 stars YOUR BUSINESS BIBLE.......2004-03-26

This is such a comprehensive book. If you have any question about how to run a business, let alone a creative one, this book is the only one you'll need.

                      Book Description

A temple in disrepair looms out of the mist. As you approach, you notice that the debris results not so much from ruin as disinterest. It appears that grandiose plans have disolved due to insufficient money, time or will.It seems a shame; the structure could have been so beautiful. A nagging thought crosses your mind. Could this be the work of Akrasia, the Goddess of Distraction? Many do not see her as a threat. After all, what is so wrong with having another drink, or listening to one more song, or playing one more hand of cards? Still, her agents have brought down empires, and her influence saps the life from communities until they fall, rotten within, to the slightest threat. Ah, but who cares? There is no doubt little of value or threat within. Might as well find a comfortable spot and turn in early tonight. There's always tomorrow for great deeds . . . Akrasia, Thief of Time, presents a series of vignettes that can be used individually or in total to enrich any fantasy campaign using the d20 game system. In it, you will find: - a description of the cult of Akrasia, its clerics, treasures and legends. - a new Prestige Class called the Distractor, and a detailed member of that class to bedevil your characters. - an almost abandoned shrine to the Goddess, with a haunting inhabitant. - a wandering servant of the Thief of Time, with a dangerous secret. - an inn beholden to the Lady of Lost Dreams, where adventurers can lose their way or gain a great boon. - four Akrasia devotees who plot to destroy a small town. - an active temple of The Delayer, with worshipers, creatures and mystical items. The Author: David Chart was born and raised in England, and currently lives in Cambridge, where he is successfully fighting off the need to get a real job. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy, which renders him unqualified for almost any serious labor. He has been roleplaying for many years, and his first game was Dungeons and Dragons. This is his first d20 System book, but probably not his last. No deadlines were harmed in the making of this product.

                      Book Description

It's like hiring a Big 6 consultant to advise you

Some decisions are too technical, too complex, or just too big to make without expert advice. Corporate giants rely on input from highly paid consultants from Big 6 accounting firms to help select the right client/server systems. Now smaller companies can do the same —at a fraction of the price.

For CEOs, CFOs, controllers, IS managers, and other senior managers in small to mid-size companies, Getting the Right Systems at the Right Price helps you make this tough decision with confidence and maximize your return on one of the most important investments your company will ever make.

                      S. James (JIM) GASTON, is Lead Consultant for Information Services at Price Waterhouse LLP.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for organizations.......2005-03-26

There can be no tangible value ascribed to succinct and poignant knowledge on an often overwhelming undertaking as assessing, designing and/or implementing an Information Systems Plan. Its benefits are limitless. This book offers just the right specialized (and generalizable) points on setting the wheels in motion for such a project. The only thing I hoped more of is its presentation of concepts. The book presents numerous tables and charts; however, it would benefit the reader to have more visuals to consolidate, present and infuse these concepts. An organization seeking to implement these concepts would greatly benefit from this resource and it should form the backbone of any strategic information systems plan implementation. The concepts presented in this book should be visually presented from within the organization to draw in a wide constituency for effective implementation.
