An Art Job.......2000-05-22
I found this title outstanding.
After reading my fathers copy of Mr Blackburn's "Illustrated Basic Carpentry" (1976), my first search and purchase at Amazon in September 1998 (Amazon only sold books at that time! ) included this book.
I was completely satisfied, it included actual topics like the basement construction, Electrical Wiring details I didn't expect to find. This was a finding because his first book I read was completely traditional carpentry and now he was treating "modern" subjects.
Still, tips and stories on American traditional house building are nicely treated with tales like Mason trick to ensure payment after their job was done.
Beautifully hand illustrated by the author, with clear explanations as in "Illustrated Basic Carpentry", there is also a nice reproduction on carpentry I didn't expect just at the beginning of the carpentry section, a 1548 representation.
Recently I had the chance to show this particular book to an experienced American architect who conducts restoration mostly on public buildings in USA and his word were the title of this comment: An Art Job.
After this nice encounter I also bought " Traditional Woodworking Hand tools", Furniture by Design" and Year -round house care" by this same author, Mr Graham Blackburn.
Actually I'm expecting the delivery of his "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ships, Boats, Vessels and Other Water-Borne Craft" which after reading it, and finding it includes what I expect to, I am sure I will choose to be an excellent gift for my cousin-in-law Harriet, who's actually studying to become a US Naval Officer.
I hope you enjoy your purchase and Amazon as much as I have!
Sincerely,
Eudoro.

Indispensible book for the serious artist........1999-02-20
I am a "profesional" seascape artist and needed a push to get myself painting again; and perhaps a change of pace. I find that this book is brim-full of important info, techniques and ideas which any artist can enjoy applying. Raves!

Book Description
Spanning some 3,500 miles of the African continent, from Ethiopia in the north to Mozambique in the south, the Great Rift Valley is home to an astounding array of flora and fauna, including the highest concentration of grassland animals anywhere and three of the world's four great apes--chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas. Nigel Pavitt, who has lived in the region for 45 years, has traveled this wild terrain across searing salt flats and up ice-capped mountains, showing why this diverse region has become a popular destination for adventure tourists.
Covering evolution, indigenous cultures, and European exploration, Pavitt's text and stunning photographs make this the finest volume on the Valley ever published, and an exciting addition to Abrams' list of best-selling books about Africa.

Customer Reviews:
Africa's Great Rift Valley.......2003-03-25
Africa's Great Rift Valley written and photographed by Nigel Pavitt is a wonderfully illustrated book on the fauna and flora of Africa's Great Rift Valley. This valley is most unique in it's layout, as the largest, longest and most prominent feature of its kind on earth.
The Grerat Rift Valley spans over 3,400 miles and incorporates land from Ethiopia in the north to Mozambique in the south. Elevation range fron 500 feet below sea level to mountains over 16,000 feet. This part of Africa is presumed to be where mankind started and evolved, from the discovery by the Leakeys, Louis and Mary, Richard and Meave who found the oldest partial skeleton of mankinds ancesters. The fauna are noteable as well and includes chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas and there is the greatest concentration of grassland animals found on Earth.
The pictures are spectacular and they tell a fantastic story of the geological evolution of this area from salt brines to volcanic activity to some of the most spectacular vistas on Earth. This book is well-written and tells an engaging story of one of the most interesting features on planet Earth. Few books about places in the world contain what this book does you'll find it well worth the money for information about geological and evolutionary history, not to mention exploration and conquest, but most importantly there are stories of the peoples living close to nature that are very engrossing.
You'll go back and reread parts of this book as I have to view and understand what Dr. David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley found so captivating as they traveled the lenght and breadth of the Rift Valley.
Book Description
The Jordan Rift Valley, stretching from the Red Sea to Lebanon, was ripped open millions of years ago by vast forces within the earth. This geological object has also been a part of human history ever since early humans used it as a path in their journey out of Africa. And for a quarter of a century it has been part of the biography of Haim Watzman, an Israeli journalist.
In the autumn of 2004, as his country was riven by a fierce debate over its borders, Watzman took a two-week journey up the valley. Along the way he met scientists who try to understand the rift through the evidence lying on its surface—an archaeologist who reconstructs the fallen altars of a long-forgotten people, a zoologist whose study of bird societies has produced a theory of why organisms cooperate, and a geologist who thinks that the valley will some day be an ocean. He encountered people whose life and work on the shores of the Dead Sea and Jordan River have led them to dream of paradise and to seek to build Gardens of Eden on earth—a booster for a chemical factory, the director of a tourist site, and an aging socialist farmer who curates a museum of idols. And he discovered that the geography’s instability is mirrored in the volatility of the tales that people tell about the Sea of Galilee.
As an observant Jew who has written extensively about science and scholarship, Watzman strives to understand the valley in all its complexity—its physical facts, its role in human history and in his own life, and the myths it has engendered. He realizes that human beings can never see the rift in isolation. “It is the stories that men and women have told to explain what they see and what they do as a result that create the rift as we see it . . . As hard as we try to comprehend the landscape itself, it is humanity that we find.”
Watzman’s poetic evocation of the scientific and the human is a unique chronicle of a quest for knowledge.
Customer Reviews:
Majestic Tales from a .......2007-06-25
"The rift valley is a natural object, created by physical forces. But when we look at it, we don't see the physical object. We see stories and ideas and our own histories. People see the same landscape differently depending on who they are, when they live, what they've done, and what stories they heard when they were children."
Being congenitally predisposed to this unique and magnificent part of the physical world, I can attest to this pronouncement made by Haim Watzman in his majestic tale of a journey up the Jordan Rift Valley, "a crack in the earth's crust that begins where the Indian Ocean's waters mix with those of the Gulf of Aden." Watzman focuses on the stretch of the rift from the northern shore of the Dead Sea at Eilat to the Golan Heights bordering Syria in his riveting new book, "A Crack in the Earth".
Through a blend of science and faith, Watzman has crafted a story that tells about geological phenomena, scientific analysis, archeological examination, and philosophical musings through the distinct perspectives of biologists, zoologists, kibbutzniks, and other ordinary, modern-day inhabitants of the rift. Watzman, who is himself religiously observant, points out that he is also a journalist and a man of science, making him naturally skeptical. He challenges accepted biblical verities with the same investigative rigor that he uses when scrutinizing geological and biological ones. He notes that "modern archaeology and textual scholarship have cast doubt on the historical truth of the Bible for decades now...in many ways modern Orthodox Judaism is not a religion of the Bible. It's much more a religion built by the sages upon the foundation of the Bible, after the destruction of the Temple and the rise of Christianity." In the same way that the rift valley is the physical foundation upon which people have superimposed their `stories, ideas and histories,' the bible is the textual foundation which Judaism in its modern application builds upon, using human constructionists in the form of the sages of the rabbinic period.
Ultimately, it is the people who have inhabited the sacred lands of the rift that have kept it so fertile in our imaginations. From the Israelites crossing into the Promised Land from Egypt to Jesus being baptized by John in the waters of the Jordan, all the way up to modern Zionists like Rachel the Poetess; these are the stories of the people that fascinate Watzman, and his infectious love of the land and its people enraptures us as well.
Watzman, who is something of an anomaly in Israel as a religiously observant Jew with leftist leanings, largely refrains from politics in this book. Occasionally though, he does weave some political context into his narrative, explaining why, for example, Jericho became off limits to Israelis after the outbreak of the second Intifada. Watzman draws parallels to the turbulent landscape (Tiberias has experienced severe earthquakes almost once a century since the beginning of the Common Era) with the incessant political and social turmoil. He ruefully observes that "to an Israeli living in the first years of the 21st century, turmoil seems to be the rule. Periods of equilibrium seem few, far off, and short-lived." Yet, in geological terms, the ebbs and flows are much slower and deliberate. Some of the rocks on both sides of the rift are between 570 million and one billion years old. In that context, humankind's effect on the region is insignificant. God, who is unchanging, watches bemusedly over it all.
Perhaps not surprisingly, some have already criticized Watzman for not incorporating more of a Palestinian, Arab voice. John Leonard, in Harper's Magazine (June edition) somehow manages, through a tortured interpretation, to read into Watzman "his homeland's hateful modern indulgence of Bronze Age identity politics." Leonard continues with his knee-jerk critique. "He has a hard time even talking to a Palestinian, as if Palestinians were remnants of some antediluvian proto-species prior to language." Or Publishers Weekly, noting that "Watzman fails almost utterly to bring in non-Jewish voices; the one Arab we meet is an Israeli Bedouin."
Both critiques conveniently leave out the poignant encounter Watzman has with a Palestinian at a West Bank gas station at the end of the book, where he risks his own physical safety to preserve his moral bearings and psychic equilibrium. For those of us who know Haim Watzman and what he stands for, the irony would be hilarious if it weren't so deadly. Even in a book that is so decidedly apolitical, by an Israeli Jew who has been so vocal in his criticisms of his country's treatment of Palestinians, critics of Israel can't help but find racism and xenophobia under any and every rock.
But Haim Watzman is if anything, the ultimate mensch. The last section of his book, in which he has a very real encounter with a very real Palestinian, attests to his own very real humanity, and bravery for his beliefs (unlike some Western intellectuals who `shoot first' from the safety of their ivory towers and do their homework later, if ever) . Just before he turns back to "meet the Palestinian halfway" and offer him a ride, he muses that "since humans first began to call the names of gods, they have created their own valley of prayers, desires, deeds, and choices, which overlay the landscape just as the rain clouds do. As hard as we try to comprehend the landscape itself, it is humanity that we find."
This is a beautiful book that radiates a personal warmth and love of the land and its people. It is as uplifting as it is inspired.

Book Description
The International Decade for the East African Lakes (IDEAL) has completed its first phase of field studies, and has assembled in this volume its findings, ranging from seismic reflections to historical drought chronologies, geochemistry, and modern food web processes. Multidisciplinary IDEAL investigations are summarized and integrated, revealing that modern changes in the East African lakes share a continuity with past variations in climate and environmental conditions. Results from an array of disciplinary perspectives and evidentiary lines point to the causative role of modern climate variation in the deterioration of Lake Victoria, one of the most prominent lakes on the planet. The ancient conditions of Victoria and other East African lakes are reconstructed with forensic tools that permit measurements of paleomagnetism, pollen and algal fossils, biogenic minerals, depositional carbonates, and bulk geochemistry. Oral traditions, explorer's journals, and records of the ancient Nile provide human testimonies that parallel the physical record. Studies of biological production, nutrient dynamics, and lower food web processes reveal how the lake communities function at the trophic levels that leave sedimentary evidence in the form of organic matter, minerals, and fossils. Comparisons of weather records and lake properties demonstrate a striking change in climate conditions during the present century with causal links to lake conditions. The collected scientific perspective makes a compelling case for the worth of integrated studies across a spectrum of traditional specialties when they are focused on complex environmental issues.

Book Description
Darrington Hunter, a pilot working for a failing airline, bails out of a stifling marriage and into the South Florida fast lane. The financial pressures of "living large" lead him to liaisons with the quick-buck world of criminals. A brush with the law emboldens him. His Flight Attendant girlfriend Sharon Jensen, a stunning beauty with a chronic bent toward the illicit, applauds his march toward the criminal life. Mysterious forces keep him moving toward crime, even as he internalizes his moral qualms. Wayne Smith becomes his underworld mentor and guardian. A man who epitomizes the good life bought with dirty money. A flight in a twin-engine Cessna, deep into South America to support a money-laundering operation, is Darrington's immersion into the dark side. His life moves at a feverish pace, and swaying allegiances leave him feeling alone wondering who is who. He takes back his soul in a rousing ending of score-settling action. Airline life before political correctness, little airplanes and the sleaze and glitz of the fast lane are all graphically depicted in this tense, soul-searching portrayal.
Customer Reviews:
Great, fast read.......2001-12-18
This book is a great read for pilots and non-pilots alike. As a pilot, I can say that the book is meticulously researched. The allure of Darrington Hunter as the "Ft Lauderdale flash" is powerful, to be sure. As Mr. Blore takes the reader on Darrington's roller coaster ride through parts unknown, the reader comes away knowing that Darrington's "immersion into the dark side" hasn't been glossed over and fabricated into something it is not. Ultimately, the book delves into a dark side that we all believe we have, but doesn't insult the reader's intelligence. This book is a must read.
DON'T MISS THIS ONE.......2001-05-23
An awesome book full of twists and turns. Follows an airline pilot down the tubes and back out again. Realistic to a "T". South America, the Caribbean and the gold coast of Florida are vividly portrayed in this soul-searching novel. What F. Scott Fitzgerald saw in the Jazz Age, Mr. Blore tells about the Me Generation. Bound to be a classic.
Supersonic read!.......2001-05-09
If you were around aviation in Florida in the early 80's you can relate to this story. Lots of fun, action-packed. The characters don't disappoint.
"Goat Rope" is an great title........2001-03-28
Here is a story that has all the "ingredients". The anti-hero is a guy that all men would secretly like to be, and one that a woman would find exciting. He could be the Delta or American pilot you just saw dragging his bag down the concourse at the Miami Airport. A man with two stations in life. An airline pilot dedicated to reliable, safe and professional transportation of the traveling public and a pilot driven by needs and desires that lead him down what could be a disastrous path. The story grabbed me in the first few pages and kept me in it's clutches till the end. Interesting twists and turns in the plot and the references to the locales and aviation technology were right on target. The discriptive passages involving the South Florida "Entertainment" scene were great. D. Hunters thoughts and dialogue rang of a much more experienced writer than you might expect from a first time book length writer. There will be further episodes in the life an times of Darrington Hunter I hope. Too good a character to let go with just one book. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!! Might read it again.

90% Useless.......2004-12-10
This book should be titled "How to Fill a 189 Page Book with 3 Pages of Information". Double spaced large type, lots of white space and irrelevant and useless filler occupy the vast bulk of this tounge-in-cheek, story tellin', vague collection of obsolete, incomplete, good ole' boy jaw-jackin' generalities. The few scattered facts in this book can easily be found by anyone with 3 minutes to spend on Google. On the other hand, it's encouraging to know that your competition in this business includes those who actually thought they learned something from this paperback.
No much use if you buy this book.......2002-04-14
I bought this book and hope to learn something which I don't know. Very disappointed!!! About 30% of the materials written in the book (such as jokes, stories, a little history) is not really in relating to the subject of the book, which is tax land sale. 50% of the materials might be on the subject, however they are not very useful. At maximum, only 20% is useful information...
Not so easy for the average person........2002-02-03
This book goes into great detail in describing ways to buy land. Unfortunately, this is no book for the novice. If you are looking for entry-level information on how to buy land cheaply you would do well to bypass this one and find something else. On the other hand, if you have some real estate savy this book will give you some real strategies to help you in your search.
A waste of time.......2001-07-17
I thinks this book lacks any useful information. She covers the topics in a very superficial way and she does not provide any real depth. If I want to get into Tax Sales and I think that reading this book will help me to do it, I am wrong. I will know a little more about tax sales but not enough to get into this business. I would hope that somebody wrote a book with more in-depth information that really helped you to get started.
Informative & Easy to Read, Rare Tax Sales Tome.......1999-11-17
I just read Lin Stone's delightful and wonderful book on the subject of tax sales. It was very interesting, though somewhat light reading that was also informative. It left me wanting more, but unfortunately that more does not exist. The subject of Tax Sales is given only minimal coverage by most real estate authors. And for good reason, it is a difficult subject where 50 different states have 50 different tax sale laws. Additionally most authors know little or nothing about the subject. Do the liens transfer with the property? What is the period of owner redemption? Tax Sales are probably the most treacherous form of real estate investment. Seller disclosures, consumer protection and other statutory safeguards for the real estate buyer just plain do NOT exist in the tax sale arena. You could end up buying a toxic waste dump, a cliff, a wetland, a tiny sliver of land, a flood plain, a landlocked parcel or even underwater property at tax sales. I've seen all of the above at tax sale. Nobody will tell you about the property shortcomings, only your own research can overcome those obstacles. Most of the tax sale properties are junk; many are worthless or have expensive problems like bad title; you have to distinguish the gems or at least the diamond in the rough. There are only two other books, by Hendricks and Moskowitz, on tax sales that are even worth reading. If you're serious read all three. Lin Stone tells a tale that is easy to read, but is somewhat lacking in depth. Big print and lots of white space make the book seem bigger than it really is. Stone does have chapters on internet and adverse possession that are unique, fun and very interesting. But chapters on Fannie Mae, Hud, VA, etc. are out of place, unnecessary, and filler. The chapters on finding the properties was enlightening. The chapter on buying a house was much to short as Stone concentrates on land. In the back of the book the list of states does not include all 50, obviously a conscious omission by the author. All and all the book was informative, offered insight that only an experience tax sale buyer/author can offer. It would be an excellent choice for beginners, but would probably be too shallow for the experienced tax sale buyer. Also some of the points made are not universal to different state tax sales. As I said earlier it is a difficult subject because of the vast difference of state law. This book is a beginning but by no means assume expertise after reading. Lin Stone's book will help, but be careful out there!

How to buy land cheap.......2002-09-11
Disappointing! After much time and much searching for cheap land the author's way, I came up with ZIP! Nothing I found was as cheap as the book's examples. It was a waste of my time...so much so that I had to come back and say so. The rules have changed, real estate is changed, and the good deals are just not there. I'm really disappointed after spending so much for the book. I tried in the areas the book suggested. I even live in one of the areas the book suggested as being a good area to try. I'm not picky either. I just can't spend a fortune on property, and since I don't have a bundle, the properties in this real estate boom economy, are out of my reach. The book promised to deliver the strategies to get the reader cheap land. It failed to do so.
By far the best.......2002-07-19
This book is the best book i have found for buying land cheap.
A few weeks after i purchased this book i bought i acre of land seven miles from the Candian border for [70.00] free and clear .
This is better than buying all those courses for hundreds of dollars .
Techniques that work, period........2000-08-28
I have been a tax foreclosed property investor for just over two years now and wish I would have found this book earlier!
All of the techniques that I use to find cheap land, and even some that I have never thought of before, are all in this book. Residentially zoned building lots for between $5.00 and $100.00 are available to anyone willing to use the techniques spelled out in this informative book. Large acreage can also be acquired cheaply and with relative ease.
This book is actually more of a manual on acquiring all types of cheap land, listing each technique individually and then tying in the overall ideas about acquiring county and state owned property very neatly in the end.
If you are looking to make some money on the side buying, selling or trading this niche type of investment property, or if you are just looking for a place to go camping each you that you can call you own, this is the book for you!
Informative, Easy to Read, But Too Brief.......1999-11-19
With only 124 pages not counting the glossary and several lists and white space, this is one of the easiest books to read. There is good information, but the depth applied to each subject is not enough. The chapter on Canadian land was different and not commonly written about, especially in the states. The author whets your appetite and leaves your wanting more. And that was my slight disappointment with "How to Buy Land Cheap". I have seen land bought for $1 and a house bought for $50 (including the land), so I know that what Mr. Preston write of is not only possible but true. Every word is believable and there is no fluff, boasting or exaggeration in this book. The author is not blowing his own horn or trying to sell other products. Although refreshing and insightful, this book is a primer and geared for the beginner. And since the 50 states have 50 different laws and rules, some of the information may not be the case in some states. I liked the book and the price is reasonable but I just felt that the book was too short. More advanced readers will find the lack of depth boring and superficial. This Fifth Edition text has obviously been updated and the author is correct in stating that things change and bargain real estate purchase methods change. Just as homesteading is no longer a viable option so has the RTC (Resolution Trust Corp.) gone away. The suggestion of using the United National catalog is one that I had used myself as a source of regional information at a cheap cost. I've said it before, but buying land sight unseen in the era of toxic waste dumps, wetlands, under ground storage tanks, and all the other natural and man made diasters is foolhardy. Even a trash pile on a farm has been known to contain empty containers of weed killer or insecticide that are toxic. The author is correct in stressing that you do your research. I recommend this book but not only to beginners and with the caveat that it doesn't cover the topics to the depths that I would have liked. This book started as a phamphlet, today it is either a long phamphlet or a short book. I applaud the authors reference publication lists as so many authors don't share their sources. Mr. Preston write in a down to earth style, easily understood giving the reader the feeling that he knows his subject and has done it himself. His title is excellent and the good book could have been excellent with more details, more depth, and more stories of sucess.
Gets right to the point of buying cheap land........1999-04-27
I liked this book because it got "right to the point". No hype, but just facts. There we're no claims that you were going to get a million dollar lot of land for $100. It told you what to expect. I've read this type of information elsewhere, but never comprised in one text. The author presented several routes along with addresses to find and buy cheap land throughout the U.S. and Canada, although Canadian land is more difficult to purchase (as the book claims). Very easy reading, and extremely affordable book.
