Book Description
This is the story of what happens when big people decide to be kids again and they have tools and lumber. A beautifully written tale about building an elaborate two story treehouse in the Maine woods, Treehouse Chronicles is reflective and insightful, and carries the reader along as a dream is made real. We meet the author's family, and friends, and a squirrel with an attitude, and you will be captivated by this poignant and humorous story of process, a house is hung in the sky. Packed with over 180 spectacular photographs, evocative watercolors, and line drawings, this book is simply delightful.
Once in a while, a great book will come along that takes your breath away. Treehouse Chronicles is one of those books.
- Foreword By Anne LaBastille, ecologist, author and adjunct professor of natural resources, Cornell University.
- Introduction by Tedd Benson, renowned timber frame builder, designer, and author.
---
From the first page, readers will be captivated by the author's charm and wit. Combined with Lewis' exceptional writing and photographs and Walsh's illustrations and watercolors, this beautifully done "coffee table book" is a rare find.
With carefully chosen words and a self-deprecating sense of humor, Lewis tells the tale of a grown man eager to build a house in the sky. Beginning with his days in Colorado, Lewis shares with readers his journey back to Maine where he and his family settle into an old farmhouse, destined to enjoy the land and the history it offers.
Upon their return to Maine, Lewis, and his family and friends participate in fulfilling Lewis' dream of building a magnificent treehouse. Through journal entries, reflection, sketches, and illustrations, Lewis takes readers through the four-year process from beginning to end. As he shares his ideas, dreams, foibles, and follies, Lewis gives readers much more than a glance into his life during this time. He gives them the hope of a dream of their own, seen through his eyes.
"Some people have laughed and chalked the whole thing up to some bizarre mid-life crises - something I had to get out of my system
I suppose I could analyze the thing to death, working under the assumption that there should be some deep meaning. But I won't. Building this treehouse was just something I wanted to do and while doing it I discovered I was still just a little kid. That's reason enough to hang a house in the sky."
While many books claim to offer "something for everyone," Treehouse Chronicles can stand by this claim. For the nature lover, Lewis tells of forest creatures, farm animals, majestic trees, and crystal clear lakes and streams. For engineers and carpenters, he offers detailed insight into the plans for the treehouse from start to finish, explaining how the treehouse literally "hangs in the sky." Historians will enjoy Lewis' description of his 185-year-old, hand-built home, the stone walls surrounding the property, and Lewis' musings about how the property's original settlers might have lived.
From a more reflective, emotional perspective, the author lovingly examines his relationships with his family and friends. This passage offers a perfect example of Lewis' admiration of his parents: "Mom taught me to be amazed every day; Dad taught me how to fit stuff together. It was a magical combination - the treehouse was inevitable."
Most likely, this magnificent book is not one that readers would knowingly search for online or seek out in a local bookstore. Rather it is more likely to be found by accident. Whether it is sought out or stumbled upon, this book will not disappoint. This fascinating collection of one man's thoughts, ideas and dreams, wrapped in a beautifully illustrated package, is apt to inspire everyone who reads it.

Inspiration & Beauty.......2007-08-23
The Treehouse Chronicles is a book for everyone who loves good writing, beauty, honesty, practical wisdom, and proof that dreams do come true. I am not a carpenter, nor do I know one thing about building. This beautiful book captivated me from page one. The art work compliments the pages and progress of the enormous project.
Best of all, I am inspired to start thinking in the realm of possiblity and promise.
The author, S. Peter Lewis is not the only one rewarded with this project, so is the reader!
Superb Treehouse book.......2007-03-19
Treehouse Chronicles is an intelligent mix of not just how-to build a treehouse, but why someone would want to in the first place. Great artwork and detailed diagrams plus a bit of philosophical thinking combine with great storytelling. If you think you like treehouses, this is the book for you.
A book for intent readers and casual browsers.......2006-12-26
There are two types of people who buy great books. I'm driven to write this review from both perspectives: the first from a reader, and the second from a coffee-table-book browser. Since you're reading this as one type or the other (or maybe both, like me), I want to assure you that you're making the right choice by purchasing S. Peter Lewis's "Treehouse Chronicles."
The intent reader: from the compelling foreword by Anne LaBastille and into the opening passages by Lewis where the treehouse is just a glimpse of a possibility, the writing is captivating to the point where you'll want to turn the pages to learn what happens next. A dry humor, sometimes so subtle you'll have to re-read the lines, is employed throughout and gives a feeling of what it might have been like to work with Lewis and his crew on this project. It must have been a joy for each participant. The painstakingly written words tell more than the details of building an amazing grown-up's treehouse, it paints pictures of the author's family life in the Northwoods and transports you to the cool mornings of mortise-cutting with a chisel and hammer.
The casual browser: "Treehouse Chronicles" is simple and beautiful. The intricate drawings and delicate paintings provide details about construction techniques, life as a builder, and even little bits of natural history from the Maine woods. Lewis's second skill (of many, I presume) as a photographer shines in this book with unique angles of the building team high up in the tree, and one of my favorites of an old, lightning-struck white pine silhouetted in the pre-dawn purple sky. You'll be able to page through the book in true browser-style and get a fair understanding of the entire conception, design and construction. You'll be able to page through the book several times, marveling at this detail or that. (Then you'll have no choice but to start reading bits and pieces.)
I have such a strong feeling about the merits of this book that I've already given away four copies as gifts. I know you'll want to do the same before you've even finished reading (or before you're done browsing, if that's the book-buying type you are)! If you like learning how things are made, this is the book you want to buy. But more importantly, if you want to see how one man's perseverance makes his wildest imaginations come true, you'll pick this book off your shelf time and time again.
My Favorite Things.......2006-12-23
You know that delightful list of warm and wonderful things that Julie Andrews tucks the children in with in the old musical classic?
It's like that.
That novel that you can't put down?
It's like that.
That cup of coffee that is brewed just right?
It's like that.
That poem or song that says it all and brings a tear to your eye?
It's like that.
That photo that captures you and makes you want to frame it and put it on your wall?
It's like that.
The gift that you decide is the best thing that you can give to all of the families on your Christmas list?
It's like that.
In fact, last year when I first saw it, that is exactly what I did! I just had to. As different as all those families are, there was something about it that was perfect for each of them. The contractor, the dreamer, the writer, the displaced Mainer, the hobbyest, and the photographer; it was perfect for each one of them.
Thanks Peter.

My husband was greatly impressed with the book and it's contents. I was impressed with it's condition.
Book Description
A practical and inspiring watercolour and pastel book on an ever-popular subject. Flowers and gardens provide irresistible subject matter to amateur artists. However inspiration from their own gardens or the wealth of parks and public gardens about the country is not always easy to translate on paper. As an accomplished painter who also has a passion for flowers and gardens, Alison Hoblyn brings readers a rare insight into the practicalities of painting with watercolour and pastel, plus the problems and pleasures to be encountered in capturing the essence of a garden scene. In addition to giving sound, practical advice, the book takes readers further by relating the observations made through painting gardens to an understanding of their design. It also shows how to bring the best out of individual blooms, and groups of flowers.

Painting Flowers and Gardens in Watercolor and Pastel.......2005-02-06
This is one of the worst art books I have ever purchased. I thought it would be a mixed medium method or a way to combine watercolor and pastels. Each medium was handled separately. The pastel portion was a disgrace. It was very childlike. I am a pastel and watercolorist. Any other book on beginning pastel would be better. The watercolor would be informative to anyone who new nothing about watercolor. Shame on the publisher for allowing this book to even use the word pastel. I feel I was robbed.
Painting Flowers & Gardens in watercolour and pastel.......2000-04-23
I highly recommend the book Painting Flowers & Gardens in watercolour and pastel. Although not a how to book with step-by-step demonstrations, it nonetheless contains an abundance of technical information. Alison Hobylyn completely opens her worldliness of artistic skills in a delightful commensense manner covering both watercolour and pastel materials, composition, drawing, perspective, and creating mood in a painting. The uniqueness of Hobyn's teaching approach is her ability to use examples of her sensitive painting style and vision to demonstrate the ideas she presents. Anyone searching for the window into the heart, soul, and expertise of a talented watercolour and pastel artist should most definitely read this excellent book.

Book Description
Since the age of nineteen-the year of his first solo exhibition-Fernando Botero has delighted his audience with the joyfully rotund figures that populate his canvases. Like any great artist, he was compelled to paint the female form. More than 100 of his greatest works devoted to the theme of women are collected in this oversized, deluxe volume, the design of which was overseen and directed by the artist himself. This book includes fifty unpublished works, numerous archival photographs, and vellum inserts printed with images made by Botero especially for the book.
Botero never works from live models, as he feels it limits his creativity. The women in his work are inspired by the women he has known throughout his life-the vivacious neighborhood characters from his native Colombia. In the early 1950s, he left Colombia to study the paintings of great artists, such as Diego Velázquez and Piero della Francesca, all of which made a lasting impression on the artist.
Accompanying the work of this incomparable artist is an introduction by one of the most respected Latin American writers of today, Carlos Fuentes.

Had to have it!.......2005-09-21
Archetypical composition that is autobiographical beyond words is Botero. When you've finished reviewing this beautiful book you will know Botero better than many of your friends and possibly some of your relatives.
Beautifully bound, a real treasure.

a bitter/sweet chuckle for all who have dared to love........1999-03-04
My Foolish Heart is a bitter/sweet chuckle for anyone who has lived life. Pendergrast manages to illustrate the inside of all our vulnerable and foolish hearts. You will recognize yourself and know you are not alone. My Foolish Heart is a roadmap for those interested in glancing into this sometimes absurd but mostly human aspect of desire, fantasy, and just plain and simple need for love.
Such charm! Such talent! Such wit! Such a bargain!.......1999-02-10
When I saw the cover art, the style looked familiar to me and I realized that James Pendergrast does the drawings that accompany the letters in Rolling Stone. I love his work. It was nice to see the drawings in full color and in this large format. He has a really wonderful sense of humor that manages to be smart and cynical without being overly negative. I think he's really insightful in that way and the drawings make me laugh but also think. I loved this book and I've already sent it to many friends.

Customer Reviews:
He never knew Hemingway.......2006-12-14
Waverly Root attended Tufts. He was in Paris from 1927 to 1934 when the paper, the Paris Edition of the Chicago Tribune, folded. The Paris Edition was a club and a cult.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Root grew up in Fall River, Massachusetts. In Paris in 1927 he never knew Hemingway. Work hours restricted his time to spend in the cafes. When Root worked at the Tribune he also produced copy for Mewsweek and a Danish newspaper. At the time Hemingway was a worker, too. Everyone did know about everyone else.
On the Chicago Tribune's Paris Edition the Paris staff was not trusted to write editiorials. At the time of the Lindbergh flight, Root knew nothing about it. Generally journalists missed the significance of the event, but the common people dubbed the flyer a hero. William Shirer beat out another employee to cover the story.
Waverly Root judged Gertrude Stein to have a true style. She made perfectly composed sentences. Her style represented a way of thinking. She passed this facility on to Hemingway.
As a result of having a by-line, the author became an authority. The Chicago Tribune was more influential than the Herald in its coverage of the Montparnassians. The pace was surprising at the Tribune. Henry Miller and two friends who were models for characters in his novels were Tribune proofreaders.
The Paris Edition was lucky for reason the colonel, the moving force of the Tribune, was four thousand miles away. The colonel's mother, Mrs. McCormick, was eccentric. She came to Paris with a companion, someone skilled in mental health matters.
Bistro dogs were called Toto and cats were Minette. The Americans in Paris formed an enclave. After working in London for two years from 1928 to 1930, Root simply gave up his post to return to the Paris Edition. He found that in his absence things had been organized to pursue serious journalism. There was a morgue, a reference library.
When the paper was sold to the Herald, Waverly Root received severance pay.
