Book Description
At last, here is a reprint of the major monograph on one of California's most distinguished and influential architects. Wallace Neff was responsible for many of the houses that have become icons of California domestic architecture. Many of his houses used Mediterranean vernacular touches, but they all bore the stamp of Neff's own particular design genius. Well-illustrated with color and black and white photographs, plans, and renderings, this book is an essential addition to the library of anyone interested in how California's domestic architectural vocabulary came to exist.
Customer Reviews:
The book on Wallace Neff, Master of Proportion.......2001-03-24
A good look at the oeuvre of Wallace Neff, an architect who could combine in his houses a sense of profound tranquility, dynamism, and whimsy. He was truly a master of proportion. Sadly, as with all of the books published by Hennessey & Ingalls, it suffers from inferior printing & photo reproduction, but the content is rich, the writing good. I'd recommend it.

wonderful photos.......1999-09-06
This book one of the best collection of cat photos I've encountered, rivaling the wonderful "Cats in the Sun." The photos are stunning, candid, and poignant, never posed. I could have done without the silly captions, however.
A nice book........1998-10-22
This is a very nice book with lots of beautiful photographs of cats. It does not have much text but the pictures are great.

Book Description
Is it possible that the insurance and reinsurance industries cannot handle a major catastrophe? Ten years ago, the notion that the overall cost of a single catastrophic event might exceed $10 billion was unthinkable. With ever increasing property-casualty risks and unabated growth in hazard-prone areas, insurers and reinsurers now envision the possibility of disaster losses of $50 to $100 billion in the United States.
Against this backdrop, the capitalization of the insurance and reinsurance industries has become a crucial concern. While it remains unlikely that a single event might entirely bankrupt these industries, a big catastrophe could place firms under severe stress, jeopardizing both policy holders and investors and causing profound ripple effects throughout the U.S. economy.
The Financing of Catastrophe Risk assembles an impressive roster of experts from academia and industry to explore the disturbing yet realistic assumption that a large catastrophic event is inevitable. The essays offer tangible means of both reassessing and raising the level of preparedness throughout the insurance and reinsurance industries.
Customer Reviews:
Essential read about financing catastrophe risk........2000-06-23
This book is an excellent treatment of an issue of increasing importance. As the costs of natural catastrophes continue to increase, the tools available to absorb the increasing costs of loss become more valuable. The book describes the demand for catastrophe insurance protection, the limitations on supply, and alternative mechanisms to shift risk. Of particular interest is the discussion of the capital markets as viable tools to absorb risk. For those concerned with the financing of catastrophe risk, this book is an essential read.

From the supplier: The use of bank credit instead of reinsurance to bolster the claims-paying abilities of state-run catastrophe pools can be cost effective, according to Chase Manhattan Bank's David Nelson. Speaking at a seminar held during the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriting Society's 1996 meeting, he explained how bank financing underwritten by Chase has proven cost effective for the Hawaii Hurricane Relief Fund and the Florida Windstorm Underwriting Assn.
