Book Description
This comprehensive guide to modern Brazilian architecture takes us on a fascinating tour of over 125 buildings and projects designed between 1928, the year of Gregori Warchavchik's historic Paulista House, and 1960, the year the capital of Brasilia was inaugurated. Works by thirty-three architects, including renowned figures such as Oscar Niemeyer and Paulo Mendes da Rocha and lesser-known, but equally exciting, architects like Flavio de Carvalho and Lina Bo Bardi, are presented in this handsomely designed guide. Each entry provides photographs, drawings, a brief description, and information on visitor access. When Brazil was Modern is a complete survey of the country's modern architectural legacy, and not only fills a forty year-old bibliographic gap on the subject, but also sheds new light on the aesthetics and social underpinnings of Brazil's modern architecture. By including the unconventional and experimental, author Cavalcanti challenges the very definition of what was modern, in Brazil, the Americas, and elsewhere.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent introduction to 3-D in various media........2004-11-24
When I had formed an interest in 3-D, I was looking for a book with coverage of 3-D movies. A friend of mine, who was a flea market dealer had a copy of 'Amazing 3-D' and traded it to me. What impressed me about this book was that the coverage was much more than 3-D movies. It includes chapters on stereo photography, 3-D comics, and a good general history of 3-D. This book was published in 1982 and is still considered by many 3-D enthusiasts to be the best general introduction to 3-D and reference to 3-D in comics and movies. The 3-D boom of the early eighties was kicked off by the 1981 movie "Comin' at Ya in 3-D". Dan Symmes, co-author of 'Amazing 3-D', was critical of "Comin' at Ya in 3-D" calling it 'bad 3-D'. Of course those of us who saw and thoroughly enjoyed "Comin' at Ya in 3-D" were unaware that we were enjoying 'bad 3-D'. Frankly, it was an egotistical remark from someone who failed to realize that if it had not been for "Comin' at Ya in 3-D", this book would never had been published. It was then that the so-called 3-D experts proceeded to make their own 'good 3-D' movies and frankly bored the hell out of their audience thus killing interest in 3-D movies by the end of 1983. Symmes developed his own 3-D movie camera system which he called 'Dimension 3'. The subsequent company Dimension 3 converted polarized 3-D films to anaglyph 3-D (red/blue) for television broadcast and were also responsible for the conversion of "Comin' at Ya in 3-D" to anaglyph for the DVD release. Their conversion process is also known as 'horrible 3-D' although they will tell you they are the only ones who know how to do 3-D right. Despite Symmes ego, he is one of the foremost experts in 3-D and sharing his knowledge of the subject certainly is a treat for anybody who is interested in 3-D in any of its various applications. [For anybody interested in 3-D movies, one of the better publications mostly dedicated to 3-D movies and especially those from the early eighties was an issue of Cinefantastique magazine: double issue vol. 13 no.6/vol. 14 no. 1, September 1983. You may be able to find this on the auction sites.]-Bob

Colorful with a nice extra.......2005-07-13
This cute little book is a retelling of Pixar's smash hit movie, The Incredibles. Brightly colored and richly drawn, it does an excellent job of retelling the story for younger readers. But, this book has an extra: It has a pop-up "viewer" and when you look through it, you will see that each page has a 3-D picture!
I bought this book for a nephew, and he loves it. I think that the people who made this book did an excellent job of putting it together. So, if you have a young fan of The Incredibles, then you simply must get him this book! My nephew and I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Good for its time.......2003-12-23
Problem with most people is they expect to plug in a bunch of code soemone else did the job writting and it work 100% of the time. In fact the primary code in this book is stable for a dos platform. attention to detials usualy result in USER errors. This was my first introduction to 3D engine programming when this book released and it worked without a hitch, the Windows port took a little fixing in spots as it was untested as much.
Usless is far from the truth. It covers all the BASIC concepts of 3D engine development OF THE TIME.
Intresting reading the other reviews considering now in 2003 the core of this engine is now a commercial 3D engine ( rights held by new owners) that is used by many game developers as well as other commercial 3D applicaition used in various fields of 3D art appllication. ( I've heard of its use in hospitals, television, schools and universities( some schools center 3D classes around the use of this engine).
In short this book is a piece of history of an application that now has many uses worldwide.
I give it 3 stars due to its age. otherwise It would get a 4
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!.......1999-09-03
This book is definitely a waste of money..
The Worst Engine I've Encounted Yet.......1998-10-30
After the first 4 chapters with pure hype (which would put Don King to shame), the engine is well below par. Very restrictive and almost impossible to upgrade. Myers cutsie style of writing makes for rather entertaining reading, but if you want to learn about raycasting, forget this book.
For the price it's not woth something so old.......1997-11-09
This book is probebly the biggest rip-off, the engine has so many bugs it isn't funny, the windows version hardly runs because of it's bugs and the map editor crashes, and when it doesn't crash the maps it saves are invalid! Definatly not worth the money. The engine is very old, it uses WinG which is for Windows 3.1 and has the same restrictions as Wolfenstien 3D. You also can't contact the author for updates and I've tried the publishers but they can't reach him either. In short, too old, too buggy, and no support or updates.

Amazing Journeys.......2005-09-09
Reading Amazing Journeys Following in History's Footsteps has been a remarkable experience. The book is a wonderful tribute to epic heroes which young and old will enjoy. The book, though nonfiction, captivates the reader from the beginning as one is transformed into another time period and taken on an adventure. The amazing journeys of Marco Polo, Mallory and Irvine, Sir Francis Drake, Lewis and Clark, and Amelia Earhart are unraveled with astounding information revealed. History unfolds differently than what one may be accustomed too or may be presented with in other historical texts. Get the latest accounts of experiences of some well known heroes from the past. Ian Young has crafted this book in a manner that will enhance the learning of any young student. The book is a fun read and will entice early readers to seek informational books regularly.

Customer Reviews:
Wish we could keep reading more of Linda.......2005-08-03
One of life's pleasures for many of us was reading Linda Weltner's columns in the Boston Globe. A friend in Boston would mail copies of Linda's "Ever so Humble" columns to me, before they were run online. I miss being able to read Linda's weekly columns, but thankfully, she left us all with two great column/essay collections. The pieces in this book are timeless slices of family life, beautifully written, to be read and savored any time we need to celebrate the comforts of home life -- real home life.
A student of life.......2001-03-17
Linda Weltner writes crisp prose peppered in humor and irony. She seems to be a student of life, who examines and dissects the relationships in her life. She is insightful, moving and very intelligent. Family Puzzles : A Private Life Made Public is engaging because it provides the reader with an honest look at Linda's private life and tribulations. And although we may pick up this book intending to be a voyeur, we finish it a friend and fan of Linda Weltner.
A timely expression of family relationships........1998-08-10
I enjoyed Ms. Weltner's book for a number of reasons. However, at this point in my own life, with aging parents and growing children, I find particular interest in her sharing of her own family experiences. I watch my own relationships change and bend, and I believe the more we share our experiences, the more we have to draw on for our own life and times.
Linda shares a poem she wrote "The Crone". I absolutely loved it, and have shared it with several friends. It represents the voices of older and aging women in our society, who have been cast aside because of age. A wonderful refusal to give in, to give up.
I would recommend the book for all who enjoy the personal touch. I like to come away with something from every book I read. If it is a new thought to ponder, or an old rememberance to recall, I feel I have enjoyed my reading time.
