Excellent Read.......2005-08-25

For those of you that like historic New England Homes, this is for you!

Even if you are not an actual historic home buff, this book is an easy read and it is interesting. If that does not tempt you then consider the excellent photography within its pages at a minimum.

This was a 45.00 book new and I was lucky to get if for less than 8.00 new at the Christmas Tree Shops here in Massachusetts. You can get some new copies at the vendors above for a similar price. This book was well worth the retail price when it was new. The book is by Historic New England (formerly The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities.)

Window Into the Past.......2000-07-09

Images that come to mind when one thinks of New England are rough landscapes, Tiny shingled farm houses and patriots fighting for freedom. But New England history does not stop there. In this book you will see a wide varity of styles that span four hundred years of our countries history, from the 1600s, to the 1940s. A great book to own.

do you think you are serious about tattooing? consider yourself a bit of an expert on it? and you don't have this book? (not even any of the other tattootime issues?) then re-think and re-consider! anyone serious about tattooing, its backgrounds, its history should have this book. and all the other four issues. they are all out on hardy marks publications; the publishing company owned and run by don ed hardy. whom you should know.

this volume is entitled "life and death tattoos", but is not as morbid as its title might suggest.

so far i've only had time to read but a few chapters. and already i can wholeheartedly recommend this book! (as usual: even for the photographs alone...)

there is an interview with one of my favourite american writers: donald richie. he's spent most of his life in japan, and therefore knows a lot about its history, its people, its culture, and its tattooing! he does have a lot of interesting things to say; especially if you're a japan fanatic like myself. btw: richie has written a book called "the japanese tattoo" - which is very, very good if you want to find out more about that subject. check out my separate review.

there's an article written by a pathologist who elaborates on tattooing from his perspective. philosophically interesting and very entertaining.

another great article is the one about the medical pathology museum of tokyo university. what do they show there? well, preserved skins from deceased tattooees!

also there's a special "portfolio" feature on dan thomé, showing some interesting, south pacific inspired tattoos.

Breath Taking........2000-06-21

I enjoy the art of the human body. Yet never had I imagined it could be an art form like this. The tatoos are immaculate... and the details with which the author used is incredible. Definitely one that you want to keep looking at again and again.

The fanciful joys of language.......2006-07-21

In January 1991 the Enoch Pratt Free Library opened the sealed manuscript of H. L. Mencken's "Thirty-five Years of Newspaper Work." Written in 1941-42 and bequeathed to the library under time-lock upon Mencken's death in 1956, it is among the very last of his papers opened to the public. Thirty-five Years of Newspaper Work, a one-volume edition of highlights from the manuscript, vividly pictures the excitement of newspaper life in the heyday of print journalism.

Here Mencken colorfully recalls his years--mostly with the Baltimore Evening Sun--as a reporter and a writer of editorials that always caused a stir among the public and riots of indignation among his enemies. The volume includes important new material on his coverage of presidential candidates from 1912 to 1940 and the 1925 trial of the man he called the "infidel Scopes."

An engaging look at a bygone era.......2005-09-22

"This, after all, is MY story, and so I do not apologize for its pervasive subjectivity."

So said Mencken in the preface, and good for him. While his usual verbal pyrotechnics give way to straight reporting here, you always know exactly where he stood.

The book's focus is Mencken's association with the Baltimore Sunpapers. His Free Lance column established his iconoclastic reputation locally. He helped draft the White Paper ("the doctrine that public officials, under democracy, were predominantly frauds, and hence did not deserve to be taken seriously") that became the basis for the company's success during the Roaring Twenties. He represented the paper in its dispute with Baltimore's Catholic archbishop over a reporter's questionable judgment. Despite outside commitments (he wrote and co-wrote more than 20 books, edited two magazines, and wrote hundreds of articles for other newspapers and magazines during this period), he remained a columnist for decades, and eventually joined the board of directors.

Mencken occasionally had a problem with years; he later placed the 1925 Scopes trial and Bryan's death in 1926, and refers back to the 1928 conventions as having happened in 1924. He finished this account before writing Heathen Days; parts of each book overlap, but, save for several Scopes trial passages and a few other adventures, aren't repeated. Even to his Scopes notes, he added many previously unpublished details.

Interesting details abound. In addition to his job, Mencken remembers peers in his field, oppressive censorship and anti-German discrimination during World War I, acquiring liquor during Prohibition, the establishment of Time magazine ("I was surprised by its immense success, for it was marked at the start, as it still is today, by a pretentious and puerile style of writing and a pervasive ignorance and inaccuracy"), several of his trips abroad, and the transient self-aggrandizing government timeservers who became "as completely forgotten as the politicians of the Polk administration". Then there are the humorous moments, such as his lodging arrangements at the 1920 Republican convention:

"I roomed with Kent, and had two disconcerting surprises the first night. The first came when he got down on his knees beside his bed and began to pray audibly and volubly, clad in an old-fashioned nightshirt. The second followed soon afterward, as he fell asleep. Never in my life have I heard more appalling snoring. All the ordinary sounds were there, but in addition there were others - for example, a series of crescendo gurgles ending in what seemed to be strangulation, with both the performer and me leaping up in our beds. The next night I managed to have Kent bunked with Adams, and so got some sleep."

The book is also a window into a transitional era. Cars and airplanes increased in popularity, but passenger trains remained the main mode of transportation for long distances: some of Mencken's fonder memories occurred on and near trains. Wireless telegraphy evolved into commercial radio. The telephone helped facilitate the reporter's job as it became more common.

Above all, this is Mencken as only Mencken could write; clear, opinionated, and quotable. This thoroughly enjoyable reading experience makes me glad he lived when he did: if his like were to come along again, he'd be barred from today's dumbed-down mainstream media.

Excellent for Learning Negotiation in Business & Realestate.......2007-09-25

Excellent book! Bought copies for friends (rare event) because it's so informative about sales psychology overall- not just realestate. You may get this book on buying realestate, but after reading it you'll be quite informed about buy anything else & negotiation potential is involved. The book has helped me - saved me lots of $$$. It's an easy read too.

Is there a Cliff's Notes version?.......2007-07-09

I recommend this book to home buyers who are looking to buy a house in the same area they are currently living in who also have either no or manageable time pressures. Very few tips are given to aid a buyer that must shop for and make an offer on a house when time only affords him a single trip to a new city (as my husband and I had to do)...which is not surprising, given that this is no way to get the bargains promised on the cover.

That being said, the tactics that are laid out seem reasonable and workable, but are repeated ad nauseum. An additional annoying feature of the writing is the tendency to spend several pages giving the reader a drawn out anticipatory build up to the few tactics the author will convey on the upcoming pages. The point-diluted anecdotes about poorly orchestrated buyer negotiations are followed up by several paragraphs that give the reader a pep talk without really conveying any information, making the book feel like an infomercial as one reads through it.

...This buyer acted poorly and spent way more money than he needed to. Don't want to be like him? Well you should read this book! Here's another story about a buyer that did something stupid. Don't want to be like her, either? Well, keep reading! Eventually, I'll get to the 5 sentences you need to read in order to know what to do instead...

Perhaps others would disagree, but as a reader with an engineering background, unless I'm reading a book for pleasure, I skim for the pertinent information. Separating the wheat from the chaff, this book should be about a third of the thickness that it is. However, if you have the time the time to shop around for a house (and by time, I mean *at least* a month or two to actually go out and look at houses) *and* to read through and separate the useless parts of this book from the parts that actually contain good advice and tactics, I would recommend it.

The Selling Agent's Worst Nightmare........2006-02-23

If your buying a house for the first time, whether its an investment or primary residence, read this book. plain and simple.

Reading it again........2003-12-25

I bought this book four years ago when I was shopping for my first house. I got fed up with my realtor and decided I didn't need one, as long as I could handle the negotiations myself. So I turned to this book.

The book is geared toward using a realtor or buying agent, but I found everything was just as applicable if used "going it alone." Especially some of the resources listed in the back for comps, etc. It's a very easy book to read and it doesn't try to make you a slick rapid-fire negotiator. It teaches you very simple yet effective techniques that may be common sense to some other readers, but they weren't to me. Admittedly, Cummins is repetitive in his messages, but I think the repetition serves to firmly ingrain the techniques in your mind so when you do actually get in front of the seller/realtor, you don't let your emotions get the best of you.

As a result of what I learned from this book (and also by not using a realtor), I saved $25K on a $185K house. I also used the techniques in negotiations during a car purchase and during salary negotiations for a new job. Best 17 bucks I ever spent.

Now I'm starting to look for my second house, so I'm re-reading the book (and going without a realtor again). I'm holding onto the first house as a rental, but I hope that if I ever have to sell, it's not to a buyer who's read this book!

saved me a bundle.......2002-04-24

I never would have even tried bidding on the house I eventually bought, it was so far out of my range. This book made me give it a try, and I negotiated down a whopping $50,000 less than the asking price. I'm not a natural bargainer, but the book showed me how to conduct myself from first walk through to signing.
