Essential, yet disappointing.......2003-07-09

This is an immense, original, dense, and unique attempt to evaluate what is "outside" of Wright's artful buildings. The authors' 50-year fascination with F.Ll. Wright's vaunted organic architecture and respect for nature results in the first book study of Wright's landscaping-only to discover Wright did hardly any landscaping, and what he did was often illusionary rather than natural (vide: spectacular and dramatic manipulation of artificial urns, planters, terraces, and axial markers)! The Aguars looked in the archives and, aside from impressionistic renderings or geometric exercises, they found hardly a developed site or garden plan from Wright's hand or after his early Prairie years! Consequently, the great bulk of this book is the authors' reconstruction or critical evaluation of the little that is explicit. Most of their attention is perforce upon what exists on the grounds of Wright houses today, 50 or 75 years on. The late Charles Aguar, a landscape architect, interviewed owners (37 original) and subjects 85 sites to intensive site analysis to try to reconstruct what was in Wright's mind and to evaluate the pros and cons of each landscape design. (Of course there's very little about the houses themselves, or their interiors.) Some of the most fascinating designs are Wright's ventures into mass suburban planning, where Aguar can trace the evolution of his thought and practice through a series of (mostly unrealized) housing schemes. Where available he includes original planting information from the archives, but supplies none of his own for the present day. He does address admonitions for maintenance or restoration to current owners of Wright places.

Aguar suggests that Wright was a far better architect than landscaper, that he was strongly influenced at specific points in his career by anti-realistic Japanese landscape design, that he became an "organic" (integrated) designer only with the development of his Taliesin estate, and that he was at his best designing and siting buildings on flat land where his geometries were least constrained by the siting analysis, soil studies, and grading plans he never made.

Text and illustrations complement each other well, but some corners have unfortunately been cut when the co-author had to reduce the text to one volume. Charles Aguar's lifelong devotion to studying Wright is poorly served by the tiny photos and maps, many his own. Despite taking thousands of color slides during their visits to 189 Wright sites, and publishing on heavy glossy paper, the authors include not a single color picture (the dust cover excepted). Gardeners will be immensely disappointed in this book, designers somewhat less so. There are no color schemes and hardly a decent planting scheme (at miniscule scale), but you can compile from the 13 appendices a short list of "Wrightian" species (while recognizing that most of them actually derive from the work of Griffith or Jensen, early collaborators of Wright in Chicago).

For an "environmental" appreciation of Wright's buildings themselves, you might like Grant Hildenbrand's The Wright Space, with its exciting visualizations of shelter, prospect, and procession within his buildings.

David Doubilet's photographs are simply beautiful...this book really blew me away. I could literally stare at the images for hours as they are that captivating. It's almost as if you're diving with Mr. Doubilet and seeing these creatures up close. The way he uses two separate views (i.e. shooting the ray underwater while also shooting the sky above the water) is amazing. While exhibiting his photography prowess, Mr. Doubilet also shows the viewer the strong connection of all the earth's elements. He also seems to have a strong relationship with the ocean life- the stunning photo of the seal peeping over the bed of kelp truly captures the seal's beauty without compromising its playful nature.

Tess Crebbin's life has been interesting by most people's standards, working as a journalist an travelling around the world. She has rubbed shoulders with the famous - there are few who can claim they have discussed world politics with Roger Daltrey and been invited to participate in Bhuddist Chanting by Art Garfunkel's wife. Tess' tale is even more unusual because she relates it largely through her relationships with her ever present dogs, Tiny and Mike.

Written with the calm pragmastim that we have come to associate with good journalism, "Two dogs and a Journalist" is direct, and heartwarming, without descending into excessive sentimentality.

This book is very useful for people working in internal audit field.

Stay away. You'll get more from a "Hardy Boys" book........2004-08-18

One of the worst text books I have ever had to suffer through. The verbage seems to come from some one who would rather be writing bad novels and doesn't want anybody to really understand what's being said. Furthermore, the review questions at the end of each chapter, in many cases, had nothing to do with the chapter they follow or even any information in the book itself on occasion. The remaining questions are written so vaguely you have to spend twice as long searching back through the text as it took to read it in the first place just to find something that resembles what the question is asking. It took me four days to read three chapters and finish the review questions at the end of two and I have no idea if I learned anything because the answer key is no where to be found. I can say this though, it may be vague and useless for a new learner, but at least it's longwinded and tiresome.

Disappointing update to a classic book.......2004-07-27

I am currently using this book to teach a college-level class in internal auditing. I initially chose it over Brink's Modern Internal Auditing (which I thought was very good but which was written at a rather high reading level) because 1) it was newer and less expensive for my students; 2) it purported to cover Sarbanes-Oxley; and 3) the previous edition was very good and I expected the same or better from the new edition.

However, what I found was that the new material was apparently thrown in without much attempt to integrate it with the original material. Many of the new sections are basically each a review of a single article. Therefore, there is language such as this in the section on Risk Disclosure Considerations in the Risk Assessment Chapter:

The writer analyzes FASB 5 and AcSEC SOP 94-6 in providing descriptive language that should be of interest to internal auditors . . . The writer suggests that inasmuch as the above disclosure taxonomy is incident to organizational management . . .

It is not a standard approach to refer to *the writer* and creates some confusion among my students.

Another problem with this approach is that some of the articles reviewed overlap with other textbook material, so there is a lot of redundancy. In some cases, it is rather shocking that a better editing job was not performed.

I agree with a previous review about the end-of-chapter questions. They are often not covered in the text. It is quite difficult to even guess how some of the questions were determined to belong with a particular chapter. As an instructor, a test bank would have been helpful also. The previous edition did have one; this does not.

Having said that, I will continue using this textbook until I'm sure I've found something better. It is definitely comprehensive! Many of my students enjoy Sawyer's trademark, colorful prose. However, I have gotten the comment from several students that the book must have been designed as a handbook for experienced auditors rather than as a textbook because it is so different from anything they have experienced.

Sawyers Internal Auditing.......2003-12-23

I used this text for a performance auditing class. It is an excellant book. It contains more information than a person could learn in one class, we only went through about half the book. It is a must for anyone interested in becoming an internal auditor. It is easy to understand, and follows a logical format.

Test portion an abortion.......2000-08-08

I have not only read the book, but taken the test portions that go along with it. It gives a good history of internal auditing for those new to the auditing field. It is also helpful to those with a moderate degree of experience. However, you will need to take the course from the USDA in order to find out what the chapter review answers are. I speculate 90% of them are just to vague! Other chapter review questions will not known until after you have read a chapter ahead. Example, some of the answers to chapter 2 review you will find from reading chapter 3. In chapter 23's test review if I recall, most of the answers come from chapter 22 etc. I did find it in my heart to give the book a 3 star because the information was helpful, but I would wait until 5th edition. As far as I know the course is not worth any college credit but should be good for CPE credit.

Research book with enormous coverage.......2005-02-27

Scope of this book is enormous. It is like an encyclopedia - which is why I got the PDF version; cannot imagine carrying it around. It is not like a college book on Internal Audit, where for example, they take you through the business cycles (e.g., revenue cycle), but that be gotten elsewhere. The coverage is excellent on both the Financial and IT side for SOX - and for internal audit departments not following SOX.

The update for SOX is meaningful and through. If anyone wanted a history of internal audit, and the impact of SOX to the professional, great overview. While expensive, this is a reference manual and hard to imagine a subject where at worse, an excellent introduction is given to the topic at hand. I have not seen anything near as comprehensive, and well integrated so it is not just a bunch of chapters thrown together. Would seem to make the 5th edition obsolete because of so much new content.

This book is extensive but confusing. I had to flip back to different chapters to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Vague, wordy, confusing, and in need of examples.......2005-11-10

I found that if you want to learn the language of auditing, have another reference handy. Often, the discourse goes on and on and on and could really be distilled down into a sentence or two that had a firm and grounded presentation. There were very few examples so it was difficult at best to try to understand the often high-level conceptual frameworks that were constantly being presented. I also noted quite a few editing errors that probably arose from cut-and-pastes that were not carefully reviewed. Also, figures and diagrams were reused and were not carefully reviewed either as information was present that didn't apply to the new scenario.

Very Confusing.......2005-07-13

I believe you can find a better auditing textbook in the market. I took an auditing class with one of the authur in Portland and, as a result, was required to buy the textbook. But, I ended up using another auditing textbook in order to get an "A" from this class. The format and writing style are very difficult to follow and understand.

It's OK........1999-05-13

I'm a college student. I am studying auditing to take an AICPA exam. well, auditing is hard for me to study. I think, in order to understand a structure of auditing, reading a book is important. 'Modern Auditing' is helpful to me. A consistent arrangement of context, detailed indexes, lots of figures.... I'd like to recommend 'Modern Auditing'.
