I've been in the aluminium industry (specifically what regards building applications) for almost ten years and this book covers a gap that existed in the publishg market, i.e. books concerning roofing applications.
It demonstrates very clearly and in plain English what aluminium is about (the basic principles such as corrosion resistance, alloys, history of the metal and so on), what the possibilities of this versatile material are in building, many case studies and so on.
I think that the author could have informed the details of the suppliers in order to get to know a little bit more about the finished products.
I also consider this a valuable work not only for experienced professionals but also for civil engineering and architecure students because veery little is taught about his metal in those courses.

This book offers beautiful examples of skies and clouds rendered in watercolor. It is worth keeping on the coffee-table just to look at and enjoy. In addition, it provides useful instruction, showing some of the techniques used to make some of the paintings. As indicated in the title, the techniques relate almost exclusively to watercolor, though the paintings themselves will inspire painters who use other media. This is a fine book.

A marvellous view of an ancient culture.......1999-07-01
Bob Powell's paintings are extraordinary and luminous, conveying both the ethereal nature and the earthiness of this ancient realm. The introduction by Roberto Vitali is a wonderful tour de force. He sums up the artist's work: " In some cases I am led to think that his documentary paintings are imaginary, while those that are imaginary seem documentary."
Rob's works are truly art ... his book ... an appetizer.......1999-06-18
The magic and mystery of the Kingdom Lo, high in the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal on the border with Tibet ... this is as close as you can get without being there. More than a coffee table book, this book won't let you rest until you have stood and gazed upon the majesty which provoked the works. Rob's works are on display at the Smithsonian through September 26.

Disappointing.......2004-02-27
Skies & Clouds by Richard Taylor is disappointing. Beginners should find the text instructive and techniques not intimidating, but the examples contain many errors (often according to his own advice) making them counter productive to the student aspiring to greater proficiency. The author demonstrates merely modest painting ability of the subject. Regretfully the lighting and shadows are not well rendered and contrast values are weak. His clouds are overly ephemeral with little structure. A watercolor of a "Sky and Sea" is the most convincing, because the waves of the sea are well rendered, but the sky is confused with fog and rays of light that look like rain. The book's purpose of being a "field guide" to aid in the artists perception of nature is good, but a more observant eye and commentary is desirable. The watercolors display visual paint textures but fall short of being inspiring Skies or Clouds.

Whether or not you've got a background in traditional character animation, Character Animation in Depth can help you learn the art of creating animated figures in the digital realm. The author, Doug Kelly, offers hands-on techniques for building eye-catching and credible characters in a variety of tools. He reviews essentially the entire 3-D-graphics software market at the beginning of the book, and throughout the book he teaches you about how to harness the specific capabilities of some of these programs, such as 3D Studio MAX and trueSpace3. But in general, you can apply his advice to whatever 3-D modeling and animation program you prefer.
Kelly focuses on helping you make (or build on) a career in character animation. He advises you on producing a demo reel for prospective employers and on making entire animated films. You begin by learning how to collaborate with an animation-production team and create a storyboard, script, soundtrack, and timing sheets as you create a story reel. The second part of the book focuses on character modeling. You learn how to design figures and faces and work with modeling tools to fine-tune form and texture. Advanced projects include casting from life and working with laser-scan data. Part three, "Texturing," helps you define base attributes and learn about texture maps and material placement. There's a good deal of hands-on help on making and applying 2-D maps for heads, wrinkles, and more. Advanced tools here include 3-D paint tools and shaders.
In part four, "Setup," you learn how to prepare your characters for animation using replacement and displacement animation techniques. You also use the concepts of position, orientation, aim, and roll constraints to define your figures' movements. Here you also learn about switching, mixing, and blending constraints. Part five, "Animating," introduces you to the basic issues of character animation, including camera animation, timing, spline and keyframe controls, and shot composition. You focus on creating movements that reflect a character's personality, partly through the constraints that define a character's range of movements. You animate a basic walk and a caricature walk and work with balance and mass to produce staggers, double takes, and extreme takes--elements of classic (cartoon) animation.
Part six, "Post-Animation Production," teaches you about lighting, rendering, compositing effects, title design, finishing touches, and final output. Finally, you get guidance on starting out in the animation industry, whether as part of an animation team or as a self-employed animator. Appendices include a glossary of digital and traditional animation terms, a bibliography, and directories of contributing artists, studios, and software companies. A full-color section shows various models by contributing artists as well as images from the book's projects. Files for these projects are included on the accompanying CD-ROM. The Structure of the book is very complicated, it's as if constructed from many different articles written for some 3D application. And many of the information is very software specific. There are many examples but not a single complete advanced tutorial. Many chapters copied from Doug's old book LW5.0 character animation. There are many other books on Character Animation much better than this.1 out of 5.

Overall this was a very helpful book. My main "problem" with this book is the author's attempt to cover so many applications so specifically. As a Lightwave user, I am still left in the dark about Lightwave's bones in character animation; which is one of the main reasons I purchased the book. Only the very basic setup was covered as a tutorial. How about something more complex such as a "hand" with limited ranges, fall-offs and strengths...? The version 5.0 and 5.6 is jumped between frequently...then Hash...then Softimage.....Max.... For character animation theory this is a good book but if you are trying to actually be a character animator using only one of the apps (such as Lightwave), then I suggest doing alot more reading from other books and web tutorials. For the price this book is good but no great wonder. I did learn from it; only not as much as I thought I would have when I bought it.

It is a good book, perhaps the best of its type, and it could certainly be much better, in ways other readers have pointed out. But it has one fatal flaw for a book that should be computer platform agnostic - the CD-ROM is Windows only. What about all the Mac and UNIX people in the 3D Industry?
Too much irrelivant information.......1999-06-03
I have mixed feelings with this book. It covers a lot of information, which is good, but i often get lost because there aren't enough pictures to go along with the explanations. Also, many techniques are software specific, and many step-by-step tutorials involve software that you may not have. Many questions that i have are left unanswered... but then again no book can answer everyone's questions. If it did, it would be 20,000 pages! The character setup section mainly deals with Hash's Animation:Master. Little good that does people who use more industry standard software like MAX or Softimage. A related book that i recommend is George Maestri's Digital Character Animation... it covers much of the same material, is much easier to read, and actually IS software independant!

character animators are small community in india and lack of dedicated schools and studios does not help us one bit,in such a scenerio doug kelly's book on character animation helped me a lot.good information on hash animation master and softimage.excellent reading material for the beginner and intermediate level.all in all superb reading material
