Customer Reviews:
For Project Mgrs and Supers ?.......2006-12-11
If you are an excavation or foundation SUB this may be quite helpful, particularly for road building. I found much of the info on ability and capacities of equipment:loaders, cranes, scrapers; concrete and aggregate production, paving, interesting but not info I need as a CM PM to build buildings in cities. If you want to know how to plan the construction of tall buildings, foundation planning, scheduling, staging, etc. don't look to this book. "Construction Mgmt.", which touched lightly on my interest, starts on page 479 of a 550 page book. This book is simply inaccurately titled.
Lots of mistakes in this book.......2004-10-10
This book is a basic introductory text to the construction industy, focusing on earth moving operations, water pumping operations, and finally on physical construction methods.
Unfortunately, a lot of the examples in this book contain numerical errors. For example, many of the examples contain references to data tables, and data from those tables is utilised for the analysis. Often, the examples use data entries that are obviously wrong, and thus invalidate the rest of the example, forcing the student to rework the example. This can be found throughout the book, but luckily the examples aren't too hard to rework.
For anyone interested in the construction industry, I don't recommend you buy this book. Getting out on site is the best learning experience. You should only buy this book if you need to (eg, for an undergraduate university subject) and then sell if off at the conclusion of the subject.
Book Description
As this hands-on book demonstrates, anyone with a pencil, a sketchbook and the will to learn can achieve amazing drawings simply by focusing on the fundamentals.

Book Description
A trailblazer for women photographers in the South, North Carolina's Bayard Wootten (1875-1959) overcame economic hardship, gender discrimination, and the obscurity of a small-town upbringing to become the state's most significant early female photographer. This advocate of equality for women combined an artistic vision of photography with determination and a love of adventure to forge a distinguished career spanning half a century.
Originally trained as an artist, Wootten worked in photography's pictorial tradition, emphasizing artistic effect in her images at a time when realistic and documentary photography increasingly dominated the medium. Traveling throughout North Carolina and surrounding states, she turned the artistry of her eye and lens on the people and places she encountered.
Having opened a studio in her hometown of New Bern in 1905, Wootten moved to Chapel Hill in 1928, where her clients included the University of North Carolina. Between 1932 and 1941, she also provided photographs for six booksincluding Cabins in the Laurel, Old Homes and Gardens of North Carolina, and Charleston: Azaleas and Old Brickslectured extensively, and exhibited her photographs as far away as New York and Massachusetts.
Light and Air features 190 illustrations, including 136 duotone reproductions of Wootten's photographs taken in North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennesseemany of which have never before been published. Though she was an accomplished landscape and architectural photographer, some of Wootten's most notable images were the portraits she crafted of black and white Americans in the lower reaches of society, working people whom other photographers often ignored. These images are perhaps her most enduring legacy.
Customer Reviews:
A brilliant combination of text and illustrations........1998-12-09
Many times, it's amazing how much "color" can be seen in a black & white photograph - the smile of a child peeking out from under a tattered hand-me-down hat, the knowing look from the eyes of a man who's lived a century and has seen more than he can bear. New Bern, NC born Bayard Wootten, captured this sort of color throughout the 1920s South, creating an artistic record that's both beautiful and many times heartbreaking.
In his book "Light and Air," Jerry Cotten, photographic archivist at the North Carolina Collection, University of North Carolina Library at Chapel Hill, shares the story of Wootten, a determined and independent woman who illustrated local color in a variety of ways, all on black & white film.
Wootten was a trailblazer for women photographers and a true artist behind the lens. She excelled at portraits and landscapes, photographed gardens and architecture, but is best known for capturing the true soul of the 1930's south - the hard working people in the lower reaches of society whom other photographers of the day for the most part ignored.
To our advantage, Cotten stumbled upon two envelopes of Wootten's photography in an out-of-the-way cabinet when he first started working at the North Carolina Collection in 1972. He was, as many are when they first see a Wootten photograph, taken with the artistry of the photos, as well as the subject matter. Since that time he has researched and collected Wootten's work, and lucky for us has produced a book that not only tells about the pioneering lady photographer, but lets the reader see first hand the amazing ability and vision of one of NC's own.
In "Light and Air," Cotten details Wootten's personal and professional life, her early struggle for acceptance in a field dominated by men, as well as Wootten's later involvement in helping herself and other female photographers gain an equal footing in the profession. Many of his sources are family and friends of Wootten who provide personal insight and quotations that add a special touch to the work. But moreover, Cotten lends a great portion of his book to the photographs themselves - pictures that show the true beauty of black and white photography and the amazing ability of Wootten to create a work of art from a subject as simple as a man or woman sitting in a chair.
"Light and Air" features 190 illustrations, including 136 duotone reproductions of Wootten's photographs - many of which have never before been published. These images of Southerners in the lower reaches of society during the 1930s will many times tug at your heart, yet one will quickly notice the dignity and charm in their eyes that inspired Wootten to stop along the road or walk down a dirt path to photograph an otherwise unlikely subject.
"Wootten's artistic skills, her success as an early woman photographer, and a career spanning half a century," Cotten tells us, "have secured her place as a dominant figure in the photographic history of North Carolina."
For a look at the life and work of this talented photographer and independent and inspiring woman, "Light and Air" is a brilliant combination of written text and illustrations. Whether you call North Carolina or New York home, the photo collection alone will make this a book you'll want to own - there's something special and naturally beautiful about each image that will have you looking through the pages again and again.

Book Description
In New Philanthropy Benchmarking: Wisdom for the Passionate (NPB), Kristina Kazarian challenges the social sector to change its operations and traditional performance measuring methods. The ambitious mission of NPB is to inspire intense competition among the passionate and provide essential wisdoms to initiate radically positive transformative change within the social sector.
NPB builds on a synergistic collaboration of commercial sector benchmarking, progressive intersectoral strategies, and contemporary financial market analytical tools. The core of Kazarian's approach is built on the assumption that the passionate (especially capitalists/philanthropists - "CPs") will instinctively strive for success in the social sector comparable to their achievement in the commercial sector.
Customer Reviews:
The Timing Could Not Have Been Better.......2002-09-24
As Enron and Worldcom have become sinister household names, revealing the boggling extent of corporate greed and malfeasance, the timing of "New Philanthropy Benchmarking" could not have been better. This thoughtful and well-researched book does more than demonstrate that there is still much to laud in the ways and means of American business; it charts an ambitious, sometimes visionary, course for socially engaged commerce, in which the core American values of altruism, community give-back and grass-roots empowerment continue to fuel the corporate engine while making perfect business sense as well. As a philanthropy consultant specializing in NGOs, I found "New Philanthropy Benchmarking" to be a refreshingly insightful work, replete with helpful resources and real-world examples making the case for Kazarian's innovative approach. I heartily recommend this book as much to corporate executives as to government agencies, NGOs and anyone involved in the philanthropic community.
Enlightening insights and a solid resource.......2002-09-23
Kristina Kazarian's approach to New Philanthropy Benchmarking is an insightful addition to the world of philanthropy. Her approach of benchmarking the successes and failures of some of our generation's most entrepreneurial capitalists, turned philanthropists, allows some of us less (financially) fortunate souls to generate significant returns on our investments, albeit on a smaller scale.
The text is packed with insights, that I found enlightening and essential. For example, on p. 78, the NPB Tactic Comparison chart outlines the framework for utilizing commercial metrics for NGOs.
And for those with the means, dedication, and desire to optimize their current initiatives, the appendices provide an outstanding scope of resources from benchmarking assessment questions to innovative foundations, capitalist philanthropist profiles, and fundamental concepts like those of Christian stewardship and Jewish "tzedakah."
Highly recommended as an informative initial read and a solid, ongoing companion resource. Overwhelming in the knowledge delivered to philanthropists of all levels.
Very helpful and practical.......2002-09-20
Of the vast wealth of information contained in this book, I've found the material on intersectoral practices the most fertile area for discovery. The disclosure on social enterprise, strategic philanthropy and restructuring, and social capital markets is extraordinary. Scores of examples of social entrepreneurship, capacity building, collaboration, innovative financings, social venture capital, etc. fill the main text and the appendices. The number of illustrative public companies with intersectoral missions will challenge current perceptions. Offering wise balance, the author provides an extensive sampling of social sector misfortunate situations, including NGOs, foundations, the law of unintended consequences, and wasted funds. In fact, the author urges that a risks analysis be completed prior to major social sector initiatives. I expect to be reading and rereading this book for years to come. Highly recommend.
Awesome "Refreshing" Book.......2002-09-20
At last a text of scholar quality for the social sector. The
innovative research on the seven capitalist philanthropists provides a guiding star of best practices. In depth analysis of the financial information is both revealing and inspiring. These philanthropists really do think and act quite differently than the main stream foundations and NGOs. The benchmarking framework provides the commercial sector tools to those with resources under their command. The book not only provides a series of insightful diagnostic questionnaires but also provides a working book for those with management responsibilities.
The highly quantitative and analytical materials go well beyond
current industry best practices. The NPB Multiplier/Discount ratio and the Blended Return on Investment models challenge the sector to higher level of performance. This book would be ideal for a full year course. Definitely Five stars.
Reference bonanza!.......2002-09-20
Without question, this is the best book available on philanthropic guidance, and I've read dozens in the field. Its rigorously analytical approach is both refreshing and essential. The research on the seven capitalist/philanthropists and their profiles present distinctly unique, high value-added insight directly relevant to the social sector. I found the development of the 7 Wisdom Points alone worth the investment of time.
Moreover, the 7 educational components provide outstanding structure to understand and implement new philanthropy benchmarking.
From a quantitative perspective, the discussion of the multiplier/discount effect and accompanying examples offer a competitive context to measure social sector investments, a tremendously valuable tool in a too-often qualitative environment. Coupled with the appendix' misfortunate situation examples, the benefits of the npb approach become crystal clear.
In fact, the appendices alone are a reference bonanza.
I recommend this resource to anyone serious about philanthropy.
Book Description
Over the past 300 years, settlement patterns, geography, and climate have greatly affected the ecology of the south Texas landscape. Drawing on a variety of interests and perspectives, the contributors to On the Border probe these evolving relationships in and around San Antonio, the country’s ninth-largest city.
Spanish, Mexican, and American settlers required open expanses of land for agriculture and ranching, displacing indigenous inhabitants. The high poverty traditionally felt by many residents, combined with San Antonio’s environment, has contributed to the development of the city’s unusually complex public health dilemmas. The national drive to preserve historic landmarks and landscapes has been complicated by the blight of homogenous urban sprawl. But no issue has been more contentious than that of water, particularly in a city entirely dependent on a single aquifer in a region of little rain. Managing these environmental concerns is the chief problem facing the city in the new century.
