Book Description
This first comprehensive monograph on the architecture of Gunter Behnisch, his partners and co-workers, gives an analysis of his architecture and the special way in which the office has always been organised, from its establishment in 1952 to the most recent buildings. A selection of 42 buildings and projects, drawn from this half century of practice, reveal the remarkable adaptability of the firm and its capacity for growth and change, and to accomodate evolving social and cultural requirements. Such notable buildings include the Fachhochschule Ulm - the first large, entirely pre-fabricated public building in Germany; the Olympia Park in Munich; the famous Hysolar Institute Building, Stuttgart; the new Parliament Building in Bonn and a large number of new buildings, several of which, including the Bristol Centre for the Performing Arts are published for the first time. There are also numerous texts written by Gunter Behnisch for this book, as well as excerpts from his lectures and writings, which clarify the design method and teaching approach of Behnisch within his overall philosophy of architecture.

Customer Reviews:
Darth Jordan.......2007-02-04
I highly recomend this book to any Green Lantern fan who's wondered what happened when Hal Jordan became Parralax. It's one of the most gripping things I've ever seen in a trade paperback.
Half and half.......2006-08-03
Back in the early 90's, DC was on a rampage. In an effort to become "edgier" and get new readers, DC went on a hero killing spree. Superman was killed by Doomsday (and later resurrected), Batman would be crippled by Bane, and this storyline, which surprisingly coaxed more groans out of fanboys than the previous two put together, found silver age Green Lantern Hal Jordan going crazy, killing his fellow Lanterns, stealing their powers, and becoming an omnipotent super villain called Paralax. Eventually, in the Zero Hour and Final Night arcs, Hal would come to his senses and sacrifice himself to save the world, but Emerald Twilight showcases the hero's fall from grace as his hometown of Coast City and everyone in it are wiped off the map, and he attempts to use the power of the Lanterns to bring it all back, even if he has to kill everyone in his way. As A New Dawn opens up, slacker artist Kyle Rayner becomes the new GL, and goes toe to toe with Major Force. Now here's the thing, writer Ron Marz was given the task of replacing Hal with a new, younger and hipper hero to take on the GL mantle, and for the most part, he does a good job illustrating Hal's fall. It's his characterization of Rayner which hurts this TPB (personally, I wouldn't be cracking jokes moments after I find my girlfriend dead in the fridge) as he is too immature for his own good. Fans hated Rayner through the years, but as the years went on, he became a very well written character, even better than GL's John Stewart and Guy Gardner. Though this TPB has no real conclusion (you'll have to check out Zero Hour and the Final Night to see how it all ends), Hal would be resurrected and become the Green Lantern once again when fan favorite writer Geoff Johns launched the Green Lantern: Rebirth mini-series, which made everything happening here more sensical, and one of the finest resurrections in all of comicdom.
this is a half good, half bad book.......2005-03-21
the first Half is not very good and really to be honest is very bad, we have a hero who has been around since the silver age of comics turned into a killer who makes the joker look sane, all done in the space of 3 issues in a rushed editoral mandated story line, there is no reason for Hal to go nuts even, all his cloest friends and even his girlfriend was not even in the city when it blew.
but on the plus side you have Kyle, he gets more room, he's the new guy DC wanted, it's kind of like spider-man in a lot of ways for the DC universe, he gets this power, has no idea what to do, makes mistakes aned people he loves will pay for it, but it's good, problem is it's also short, just as he starts to really get going it ends, his rookie years would continue for another 100 issues or so.
there are many betetr green lantern trades to check out, but if you need to see jordons fall or kyles start then get it.
Bold Step... But Should Have Been Longer!.......2004-02-15
"Emerald Twilight/New Dawn". This book reads like a weird nightmare. Everything is so crazy that it's almost unreal - like something in the back of your mind telling you that this just can't be happening!
DC Comics took one real bold step with Hal Jordan in the early 1990s. They made him crazy and evil. Ever since the 1985-6 "Crisis on Infinite Earths", they have been killing off the Silver Age heroes and replacing them with new versions. Barry Allen was replaced by Wally West, Oliver Queen was replaced by Connor Hawke, Superman was (temporarily) replaced by FOUR new versions of the character (don't ask!), Batman was (also temporarily) replaced by Azrael and later Dick Grayson and finally Hal Jordan was replaced by Kyle Rayner (of which the tale is told in this volume).
The most controversial of all the "replacements" and "revamps" was the Hal Jordan-Kyle Rayner thing. You see, all the other replacement were either temporary (Supes, Bats and even Green Arrow is now back) or the original died heroically (as in the case of Barry Allen). With Green Lantern, sales was so low that they needed a really HUGE event to shake things up - so they had Hal Jordan go crazy, slaughter all the other GLs, the Guardians, destroyed Oa and become a super-powerful cosmic villain called Parallax. Ron Marz, the original scripter of these tales (he's not the one really responsible for the whole thing - it was an editorial decision!), have been receiving death threats and insults from fans (mostly unreasonable) ever since. My reaction is like that of the other reviewer - WHY THE EXTREME REACTION?
Granted, I like Hal Jordan a whole lot! Look, I even created an Amazon List on everything Hal! And after reading the recent Mark Waid penned "The Brave and the Bold" TPB, I too wished that Hal Jordan is still Green Lantern. But then, I like the evolution of the character even more. And I like the idea of Hal Jordan as Parallax (and now as the new Spectre). In short, I like change. And finally, I'm beginning to like the new GL, Kyle Rayner, a whole lot too.
Now to the stories in this volume. They were previously collected in TWO separate volumes - "Emerald Twilight" and "A New Dawn". DC recently rereleased the two stories in one volume along with the "Emerald Dawn" and "The Road Back" volumes to form a series with a similar cover-design. Therefore, this current volume consist of issues 48 to 55 of the Green Lantern comics and includes an Afterword by Ron Marz. I rather enjoy the reading the story in one sitting (although I'd recommend reading "The Return of Superman" TPB before this one to understand the background behind Hal's descent into madness). My only complain is that they should have made the "Emerald Twilight" story longer. It was a major milestone in a character's life and he only had THREE ISSUES? Then you have FIVE ISSUES of melodrama and soap opera with Kyle Rayner discovering his new powers as the new GL? The whole collection feels rather uneven because of this. The pacing for the first part is too fast and too crammed and the later part is too loose.
Ron Marz's writing is passable and Kyle Rayner is still largely undeveloped in this volume. Get "Baptism of Fire" (the next volume) to see how Marz develops this new GL. The artwork is overall very good - especially the chapters by Darryl Banks and Bill Willingham. Finally, it's always great seeing another appearance by Alan Scott, the original Golden Age GL, giving some pointers to the new GL! This is an important milestone in the history of Green Lantern (possibly the most important in recent decades) and I'd recommend it seriously for everyone interested in the evolution of the GL mythos.
Why all the outrage people?.......2003-10-24
Lets face it, as progressive as comic books may be, there is no fan base on this planet more adverse to change then comic book fans. Trust me, I know, I'm one of them. Hal Jordan was my favorite hero when I was growing up. As a young child, the Green Lantern action figure was my favorite, and the few comic books I had of that day included several of his. Years passed and my comic book focus was lost for several years. The death and rebirth of Superman managed to drag me back in. A related event to Superman's rebirth was the destruction of Coast City, Hal Jordan's home. This was the moment that I had to get back in to the Green Lantern series. I had to see how my childhood hero would react to such a loss. The writers at DC took him in an unexpected and incredibly bold direction....Insanity. Hal Jordan lost his place, and in his rage and misery managed to destroy all that he held dear to him. He turned his back on heroics and spent the next few years as a villian, taking the name Parallax.
Well, most people out there cryed out and screamed and wailed and said "If Hal isn't going to be Green Lantern anymore I'm not going to read this book anymore". Well that's just petty. Like the passing of the role of James Bond, the passing of the Green Lantern ring to Kyle Rayner was a bold and innovative choice. We got to watch someone else grow into the role, someone who, in my mind, has managed to tell as grand a tale as any Hal could write up. I stand by DC's decision and they're story making ablities. Emerald Twilight is one of the greatest comics I have ever read. Hands down.
Customer Reviews:
Rayner Proves a Success.......2002-11-18
For me Hal Jordan will always be the ultimate Green Lantern, but Rayner fills his shoes nicely. Ron Marz follows his brilliant Emerald Twilight story with some surprisingly strong plots. This collection introduces us to Raynor's world. He is a struggling artist with a wild imagination, which is perfect for the character of Green Lanter. Marz also gives artist Daryl Bank some difficult pieces to draw. Instead of using simple baseball bats like Jordan was prone to doing, Raynor conjures up gladiators, robots nad other more imaginative creations through his power ring.
There's a new boy in town - yay!!!.......2001-10-03
While many people still dwell over the fact that Hal Jordan is no longer with us as the GREEN LANTERN (going nuts and killing all other GL's around then adopting a GOD-like attitude will do that to you), it seems that an equal amount if not more have accepted and ended up loving KYLE RAYNER as the newly appointed GL. This story will take you back to the early days of KYLE, coming to grips with his new destiny. See what made him the hero he is today - recommended reading!!
Yawn.......1999-10-15
Anyone who thought that the character of Hal Jordan was gettingstale need look no further than this book to find out that there areindeed worse things. Hal Jordan's character maintained a loyal fan base for thirty years, but Kyle Rayner's character gets old, stale, and boring after the first panel. Who cares about this Gen X slacker who had a power ring dropped into his lap without doing anything to earn it? I certainly don't.
good book.......1999-08-13
as the prologe to the next green lantern, it contains the best picture that defines kyle's personality (the picture where kyle steps on his first of many defeated opponents and raises his arms over his head to get his picture taken for the front page of the paper). the book is best paired with "baptism by fire". they both show what it takes to learn how to use the ring and become a hero.
Story breathed new life into the Green Lantern series........1998-11-01
Hal Jordan was a classic, but he was getting old. The series needed a fresh start and this did it. Excellent story.

Book Description
What is the influence of software systems on an organization's ability to create knowledge, learn, adapt to change and innovate? While organization, management and innovation theory has primarily focused on the impact of software on measures such as process efficiency and speed, this book argues that integrated systems and digital technologies offer even more fundamental implications for the innovating firm.
A series of detailed case studies provides the foundations for a deeper theoretical and empirical understanding of the nature and dynamics of software, knowledge, organization and their complex interactions. The author demonstrates how software induces the radical reconfiguration of organizational knowledge and learning dynamics, including an organization's ability to create, store, transfer and integrate knowledge across heterogeneous organizational boundaries. The book provides a unique perspective on what organizations know and how they use that knowledge to build, sustain and renew their capabilities. This includes understanding how information systems can be designed or implemented in such a way as to favor innovation and adaptation, and to prevent unfavorable patterns of behavior.
The book represents an in-depth and systematic attempt to characterize the fundamental influence of software over the processes that underpin an organization's ability to create and manage knowledge. Scholars and students interested in innovation, technological change and information technology, and managers in software and other hi-tech industries will find this an insightful and highly rewarding study.

Book Description
FOREWORD
In 1984, the Board of Directors of Vancouver City Savings determined to take steps to secure their dominant position in the British Columbia and Canadian credit union movement.
As Chief Executive Officer at the time, I felt it was propitious that Fraser Smith had targeted VanCity to champion his unique financial strategy for mortgage owners in Canada. The Smith Manoeuvre, as it was to become known, was simple and elegant. We attracted many new customers over the years by virtue of our support of the program.
My question back then still stands today - "Why isn't every Canadian making his mortgage tax deductible?" Perhaps the publishing of "The Smith Manoeuvre" will make it happen.
Larry Bell
Vancouver, B.C.
Customer Reviews:
Very Dangerous.......2007-08-07
This book is not about the well worn idea ( in Canada) of selling your investment portfolio to pay down your mortgage and borrow with tax deductible debt to invest; as that is about all there is to be said about that (other than you're likely doing something wrong if you are not paying off your mortgage as soon as possible and so anyone who has investment assets as large as their mortgage is already on the wrong track). This book is not about paying down your mortgage at all but refinancing principal paydowns in order to borrow MORE to invest. This is a high risk strategy that assumes your investing rate is always higher that your borrowing rate; only professional traders should ever borrow to invest (as they don't invest they trade with other people's money!). Many people go brankrupt when they then face a recession. The book makes silly assumptions like 'assume your investing rate is 10% being 'Joe's' financial planner's target return'. If everyone could be assured a positive return over their borrowing rate it would constitute 'free money' and everyone would do it. The banks wouldn't even give you a mortgage of 6% if they were guaranteed 10% elsewhere. The book is a con job for the author to earn royalties, not 10% returns or he would go after those himself! Good luck!
Good technique, terrible book.......2006-05-16
"The Smith Manoeuvre" is a book for Canadians to convert "bad" non-tax deductible interest from loans to "good" tax deductible interest loans.
Essentially the whole point of the book is to state that you should borrow money to purchase investments while you pay off your mortgage. This allows you to covert your debt into interest that is tax deductible.
While the technique is certainly useful and important, this book is terrible to read. It is filled with repetition which appears to be filler in order to make a book out of this topic. The examples are poor and the writing make it a very dull read. Additionally there are no illustrations which would great help people understand the technique visually. And finally there are consistent references to the author's software which makes the book read more like an infomercial that reading material.
Regardless, the technique is important. I would suggest borrowing this book or having a financial advisor explain the technique to you instead of picking up this book. 2 out of 5 stars.
Waste of time.......2005-08-05
There is no useful information in this book. It is a huge plug for some software that anybody could make in an hour with Excel. The author is on a rave about the political system more than trying to explain a useful financial tactic. And why buy the book? The tactic is: use existing money to pay down your mortgage, then borrow back the same amount and buy investments. The interest on the re-borrowed portion is now deductible. Simple as that.
Great concept, not well written.......2003-11-27
When my acccountant described the Smith Manoeuvre, I was very interested and picked up the book. While not entirely well written (he rambles on about politics, the Canadian Alliance and Joe Clark) the core concept is sound and I'll be implementing this manouevre to start leveraging the principle gained in my current mortgage to get tax deductions.
His examples are not entirely intuitive. If he spent more time on explaining the fundementals and less on rah rah, it would make for a less confusing read.
That being said, despite the poor writing, his "manoeuvre" is great and the book is worth every penny. It'll get you on your way to getting tax deductions on your personal residential mortgage, and more importantly, increasing your net worth.
Finally - relief for Canadians.......2003-02-08
Author Fraser Smith has become my hero. His book for making a mortgage tax deductable is brilliant. He writes about all the steps for average folks to do like the rich, and get richer, by turning mortgage interest into tax refunds. This is for Canadians. I will soon be marching down to my bank and demanding they turn my mortgage into a Smith mortgage, then running to my mailbox for my tax refund. I look forward to many worry-free years ahead as my retirement portfolio grows.... Two thumbs up for the Smith Manoeuver.
