At a time when many of the past decades' urban renewal projects are facing the wrecking ball, Detroit's Lafayette Park continues to be a model of urban livability. This in-depth look at the project explores why. Amid the oppressive urban blight of post-World War II Detroit, the Lafayette Park project emerged as a vibrant point of optimism and viability. Planned by Ludwig Hilberseimer, with concrete, glass, and steel buildings designed by Mies van der Rohe, and a park and gardens designed by Alfred Caldwell, this series of subsidized high- and low-rise apartments remains a superb example of an integrated community a half-century after its construction. This latest volume in the CASE series published in collaboration with the Harvard University's Graduate School of Design examines an often-overlooked paragon of modern architecture's highest goals. Today, while public housing and other urban renewal projects are being abandoned and even torn down, this volume discusses not only the significance of Lafayette Park's singular achievement, but also its relevance to the continuing debates about the status of public housing in the contemporary city.

This small book is a gem. It was a surprise to know about this project and how well it has withstood time. Pity is not bigger, with more before and after pictures.

The book has nice black and white photographs which capture many aspects of the typical Israeli soldier's life but the text is very poor and absolutely not engaging, to the point of being a major disappointment. If the photographs are not your main motive to buy a book, avoid this title and read the old but still good book "A Portrait of the Israeli Soldier" by Reuven Gal or any of the Israeli sodliers' memoirs published recently.

The book is excellent. The photographs are stunning. I think it really captured a unique point of view of this army that we don't ever see in the three minute sound bites on the news. I think it is refreshing to see a photo journalist focus on important issues in the world that are not depressing. It makes a thoughtful gift for any occassion.

In this book David and Alex Bennet propose a new model for organizations that enables them to react more quickly and fluidly to today's fast-changing, dynamic business environment: the Intelligent Complex Adaptive System (ICAS). ICAS is a new organic model of the firm based on recent research in complexity and neuroscience, and incorporating networking theory and knowledge management, and turns the living system metaphor into a reality for organizations. This book synthesizes new thinking about organizational structure from the fields listed above into ICAS, a new systems model for the successful organization of the future designed to help leaders and managers of knowledge organizations succeed in a non-linear, complex, fast-changing and turbulent environment. This book outlines the model in chapter four, and then breaks down the model into its components in the next two chapters. A Great Treatment od a Complex Topic.......2006-11-17
The Bennet's provide a dialogue of complex systems that is exceptionally thought provoking. They have a logical progression in developing their concepts and are mindful of reinforcing the basic concepts by continually referring the reader back to the basics of the introductory chapters. Experienced managers will be able to relate the concepts presented in this book to the ones they have experienced. It will allow those mediocre managers to set their goals in proper line and also help those who have been successful in either reinventing their organization from the ground up or honing a functioning organization into a finer running machine. This is not a book you can read and absorb in a short time. In fact, my first reading took several months. My second reading continues in an even more deliberate way, selecting certain chapters that relate to my real world.
A book you keep on a nearby shelf to pull down periodically for a short read about a specific organization concept of interest.
The Application of ICAS to KM Education.......2004-10-04
At Kent State University our graduate interdisciplinary program, Information & Knowledge Management (IAKM), was founded two years ago by a number of departments and schools: Communication Studies, Computer Science, Graduate School of Management, Journalism & Mass Communication, Library and Information Science, and Visual Communication Design. This rich mosaic of experience and knowledge is a seedbed for teaching the Intelligent Complex Adaptive System (ICAS) as described in Organizational Survival in the New World: The Intelligent Complex Adaptive System, by Alex and David Bennet.
Many of our learners in the IAKM Program are mid-career professionals, managers, and executives who seek a blueprint and framework for constructing and sustaining the new, Second Generation Knowledge Management (SGKM) organization. Alex and David have provided a rich foundation in the theory behind ICAS and draw in a resulting learner dialogue that demonstrate how theory can be practically engaged in the dynamic environments of our evolving institutions, businesses, and governments. This handbook will be used to design a new course in IAKM that prototypes a successful and innovative ICAS organization-covering aspects of its architecture, structure and infrastructure, culture, leadership, problem-solving and decision-making apparatus, collaboration, and potential institutional outcomes.
Alex and David Bennet are exemplary Master Builders who draw upon Complexity Theory. This book fulfils the needs displayed by many highly motivated learners who wish to comprehend and apply the elements and theories that are required to construct and launch a competitive and agile ICAS organization.
Of particular value to me was Part IV: The Knowledge Solution, which focused on the new skills and competencies needed by the new knowledge worker to help attain organizational survival and, more importantly, organizational success. This seminal monograph has augmented the goal of my research into the development of a Knowledge Management Educational Framework (KMEF) because it contains rich material with which I can effectively teach KM as well as fertile substance for my academic research agenda. I highly recommend this book because it will prove useful to academics as well as practitioners.
Breakthough for Organizational Thinking.......2004-04-27
This is one of only a few books to attempt a fresh expansive view of new organizational infrastructure, principles, and tools in nearly a half-century of post-industrial society experience. One might say that until the last decade of knowledge management thinking, there has not been the perspective to do this. But, I don't buy it. Fritz Machlup's work in the 50's extensively described the impact of knowledge work on the economy. Drucker clearly saw it in the 50's. What have we been thinking about?
You can't read this book without disagreeing with the Bennets. They touch too many subjects too dear to too many of us. Still, give them credit for so many new ideas. They have laid the basis for a broad dialogue grounded in the credible view of complexity theory. The Bennets have sent out the invitations, they have set the table, who will join the feast? It is challenging for me to read this book. I constantly want to be able to discuss it with others. There is so much depth and breadth at the same time. Also, you may not be able to read it without being remorseful about your own organization, especially if you work in a complex enterprise. Recommend you scan the table of contents and then start reading. As the Bennets say, go to Chapter 19 if you need grounding in complexity theory. I found it useful to jump ahead and read chapters as my interest was peaked. Then go back and pick up from where you left off.
The Bennets' research alone has immense value. This book should become a college text for graduate work. They are well grounded in complexity theory, nevertheless, they pull from many fields, disciplines, and theorists to build this new body of knowledge. The book would rock an MBA program.
Drucker says that figuring this sort of thing out will determine how well we'll compete in this new century. The Bennets give us new frameworks for describing what we're working with and how we can organize for breakthroughs on multiple levels. In the meantime, hopefully a leader at Homeland Security is reading this book.

Today's enterprises have to continuously extend their operational limits to earn profit, thrive and prosper. Over time evolution led to the development of two concepts to master this challenge: intelligence and knowledge. This work introduces a system theoretic perspective on enterprises, regarding them as natural living systems formed by evolutional forces. Intelligence and knowledge manifest in the system's behavior. 'Intelligence' is identified as the necessary framework that realizes continuous adaptation through the ongoing development and incorporation of control procedures and building blocks. The content that fills this framework is the 'Enterprise Knowledge'. The transition towards an intelligent enterprise requires drastic organizational changes. The rigid framework of business processes has to be replaced by a project framework, employees have to be integrated as 'Knowledge Workers' and IT systems have to offer advanced structural and organizational properties to facilitate declarative processing.

This volume contains the edited version of the technical presentations of PROLMAT 2006, the IFIP TC5 international conference held on June 15-17, 2006 at the Shanghai University in China.
Profitability is no longer only a function of price, cost, and adequate quality. The way sustained competitive advantage relates to a firm is distinctive and it is difficult to replicate competencies. The basis for a firm’s core competencies is its repository of organizational knowledge. This is highly-valued knowledge that provides opportunities for adding exclusive value to products and services of an enterprise. Knowledge strategy will be related to innovation, learning, and agility. Conversion of advanced research into advanced products; acquisition of knowledge from experience; and fast response-time to the dynamic market changes, are the important rules of international industrial competition at the moment. Innovation, learning, and agility are key factors for companies, which must shift in global markets rapidly and efficiently by delivering new products in the shortest time frame, while maintaining the highest quality and the lowest costs. The successful enterprise of our century will be characterized by an organizational structure that supports thinking process, experience transferring, knowledge discovery, and intelligence exploitation, all of which are based on data and information.
The success of a modern company is not based on its size but on its ability to adapt its operation to the changing environment. To answer to these constraints, the enterprise must develop a corporate culture that empowers employees at all levels and facilitates communication among related groups for constant improvement of its core competitiveness. Such an organizational structure requires a technological infrastructure that fully supports process improvement and integration, and has the flexibility to adjust to unexpected changes in corporate direction. To keep up with rapid developments in global manufacturing, the enterprise must first look at its organization and culture, and then at its supporting technologies. Too often, companies invest only in technology to compete in the global market and don’t give enough attention to the training, the education, and the knowledge of their employees. This conference concentrates also on knowledge strategies in Product Life Cycle and brings together researchers and industrialists with the objectives to reach a mutual understanding of the scientific - industry dichotomy, while facilitating the transfer of core research knowledge to core industrial competencies.
