Excellent Book for Starting Out.......2003-02-25

I was asked by my sister to photograph her upcoming wedding. I had been "fooling around" with photography for a number of years and at one point considered becoming a professional photographer. Well, life has a way of altering our plans and I have remained an amateur photographer. But I wanted to do a good job for my sister and produce solid photographs.

I looked at dozens of books and finally stumbled across "Wedding Photographer's Handbook, The Complete Guide". I will admit, the book could use an update, but the basic information is all there.

The first thing I liked is that the authors put all the really important information right up front. They discuss the "Four Photographic Categories" a photographer should address at a wedding such as "Command Photographs" and "Must Get Photographs". The authors also provide the reader with a "Wedding Candid Checklist", which can be used when sitting down with the bridal couple to identify which photographs they would like taken.

The book also discusses how a wedding photographer should conduct themselves during the job and even offers suggestions for how a wedding photographer should dress when attending the wedding. And all of this information is in the first chapter!

Chapter two goes on to discuss the equipment that will be needed. They discuss types of flash units and what types of filters will be needed. There is a wonderful section on the "Five Lighting Choices", which includes easy to understand instructions for correctly lighting your subjects.

The next six chapters of the book divide the wedding into events such as the "Wedding Ceremony", "Back to the Altar" and the "Cocktail Hour and Reception" to name just a few. Each chapter outlines the activities associated with each event and how to ensure you capture these activities photographically. The chapters end with a summary of the photographs that should be taken for the event discussed in that chapter.

The final chapter outlines the "Business of Wedding Photography" and gives the reader advice on building a portfolio, how to let the world know you're a weddding photographer, booking a wedding, preparing the wedding proof book and, most importantly, getting paid.

This book has a wealth of information. There are other more current books out there, but none of them, from what I've seen, provide the level of information you'll find in "Wedding Photographer's Handbook, The Complete Guide".

I would have given this book five stars, but as I said previously, it could use some updating but don't let that stop you from purchasing this book. Take my advice, I've looked a just about every book out there on this subject and this is the book that has it all.

Excellent Anecdotes and Hints, But Photos Could Be Better.......2000-04-02

I write as an intermediate amateur photographer (with no intention of turning professional) who is about to photograph my first wedding. The Hurth and Hurth book has over 100 photos of weddings, many of them classy, but I think the photos have two problems. First, many are too small to show important details. Second, less than a third of the photos are in color, and the color is not reproduced very vividly. On the other hand, I liked the extensive text, especially the grey "Shooter's Log"s with anecdotes about things that go wrong at weddings, and the grey "Reader's Note"s in the sidebars with helpful hints.

Informative but dated........1999-07-05

This was informative for the aspiring wedding photographer. It was however a bit dated in both its style and the included photographs. The author needs to write an updated version and include photographs from this decade!

This book is truly a work of brilliant satire. The world's laziest comic private has one laughing yet again. As funny as this work is, the "Taps for Sarge" section is moving. "Beetle Bailey" without Sarge is like computers without the Internet or TV without cable. A vital element is missing.

This book takes you through a full range of emotions, from bittersweet sadness for the irate, yet lovable Sarge to rolling with laughter at the irrepressible private.

It's time to report to work, Sarge!

Deeper understandig and registries.......2004-08-21

Several books in the market gloss over the UDDI technology. It is usually an addendum to a book about Web services or service oriented architecture. It was a pleasant surprise to see that there is a book dedicated to this topic. I firmly believe that until registries such as UDDI become commonplace, the true vision of SOA cannot be achieved. The authors make several good points regarding this. I also liked the examples used in the book -- more real-world than registering hello world services.

It's bit longer read, but totally worth it when you are writing and registering more complex Web services than Echo and 20-min delayed stock quote.

Low-density book on UDDI.......2004-01-13

This book spends a tremendous amount of pages per idea. There is a lot of code in the main text (should be on a digital medium or at least the appendix). And this code is even repeated in .Net and Java.

Anyhow:
It is a fast and swift read.
You get some examples.
You do find things you do not find in other books.

My best recommendation for UDDI is still the corresponding chapter in Eric Newcomer's Web Services book.

This book is part of the Hewlett-Packard Professional books series. Except for the cover design, this is (luckily) not noticeable at all. Well the company employs the authors.

Excellent book that puts business registries in perspective.......2003-01-25

There are several resources that take a "reference book" approach when explaining a technology. While that solves the immediate problem of getting syntax right, it rarely helps in getting proper understanding about how a technology is suppose work within a solution. Such books also fail to provide an understanding of how and when to employ the specific technology while designing and implementing a solution to a specific problem. I found that this book has refreshingly taken a different approach --- looking at a technology from architect or technologist perspective. Sure, it has devoted about a third of the book to UDDI APIs, a section that will be useful for developers, but at the same time, it also provides several insights for senior technical members of a team. For example, the five usage models for business registries in corporate environment covers practically all scenarios in which a business registry-based application can be created. Some of the discussion, such as that on Web services ecosystem or on vendor-customer relationships and role of business registries in those is even useful for IT and business managers.

This book contains valuable information about the research process. Particularly helpful are the sections on citing electronic documents and organizing research information. However, this information was marred somewhat by the controversial subject matter chosen for the example research paper. Whatever the author's stance on affirmative action, this book should not be used as a platform for it. A more neutral subject would not detract from the information covered in the text.

Great book, especially for documenting sources........1998-02-21

This is an excellent book for doing research using the world wide web! While many of its tips are documented elsewhere, the dicussion on how to document sources in a bibliography when the source is a web page is great! This is uncharted territory and few other books, if any, cover this subject. Many universities are sticklers about what style to use in bibliographies and this documents both MLA and APA styles. It also notes that the way the book shows how to do it is not yet an "official" standard from MLA or APA. However, the recommended style is close enough to both to be usable.
