1 out of 5 stars Out of focus garbage........2004-11-16

I bought this book as a gift for my boss's wife as she is an avid gardener and photographer. I should have saved my money and taken the photos myself. The pictures are amateur at BEST. The talent is non existent and you will see that numerous pictures are OUT OF FOCUS. It looks like most of the photographs were taken with a Kodak disposable camera. The photographer must need glasses if she thinks the pictures are in focus. Conclusion: Save your money. You'd be better off buying your own camera and taking pictures yourself. There are plenty of other GREAT gardening books out there with much better, well thought out, professional, in focus, photographs.

5 out of 5 stars A stunning panorama of world gardens........2000-01-13

Beautiful colour photography and insightful, cutting critique make this a well rounded look at the 20th century world class garden. A highly recommended addition for all garden lovers' libraries, from the late David Hicks. A book you will treasure.

    1 out of 5 stars Huh?.......2007-08-23

This book teaches how to draw something, but it isnt manga, what kind of japanese manga looks like this? This is not manga! Its COMICS!!!! There are differences ill explain:
    Manga: Japan
    Manhua: Korea
    Comics: US
Its best to learn from other books that are from japan that are translated like the How to Draw manga series

    1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous.......2006-05-13

    >A completely original approach to learning how to create a manga comic.

Sure it is original. A How-to-draw-manga book by two guys who can't draw manga (or anything) at all. The worst book on How-to I have seen by far.

If you want to learn how to draw manga, you'd better use your money buying something like a hamburguer. You will learn the same but you won't be wasting your money.

5 out of 5 stars Best Introduction to Manga Drawing.......2005-10-16

Just got this and love it - the drawings are fantastic and it's a fun introduction for those of us getting into the manga style. Not sure what the other reviewer was complaining about - the art is great (not blurry - the style is meant to convey how it is sketched out) and the drawn in a way that helps you learn as well. Can't go wrong with this.

1 out of 5 stars The funniest "how to draw" book.......2005-08-21

I don't know for sure who encourages people who can't draw to write books explaining their technique. So, I will have to blame the mothers of Mr. Gibson and Mr. Marcos for this travesty. Guys, I'm sure that between you, someone knows how to make the little stick figures, and someone knows how to sketch, and maybe someone knows how to draw the outlines around them. So when you started out on this book, you should have assigned those tasks to the author who was competent in that area! Just looking at the front cover of this book will give you a nice clue of how the authors draw manga. But please, don't look at it too long-- the wiggly outlines and misplaced eyeballs might be contagious!

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL for any Manga student or fan!.......2005-07-08

My nephews (8 and 15) are really into Manga and wanted to learn how to make some of their own characters and stories. We were disappointed with a lot of the books out there - poor translations, not very helpful, and, quite frankly, boring. I just got this and they absolutely love it. First, it's just a great graphic novel - lots of fun, funny, a little scary. But, just as important, it uses the story to help you learn how to draw different kinds of characters, animals, machines, etc., in a way that actually engages you. And, unlike a lot of how-to books that teach manga, it's easy to follow. It also encourages and helps readers create their own characters and stories rather than just copying what's in the book. I've even gotten into it with them. A great gift for manga fans of any age!

"If it looks like a photograph, it's photorealistic--no more, no less." This definition is key, says photorealistic 3-D graphics guru Bill Fleming, who presents techniques for building spectacularly rich photorealistic environments in Advanced 3D Photorealism Techniques. This book is well-suited for 3-D gurus who want to move up to the next level in their craft.

Fleming introduces you to simple tricks for adding surface chaos (in the form of rust, oxidation, and corrosion) to otherwise flat images and shows you how to tackle surfacing challenges. For creating a "back alley" city street, for instance, you can add dirt and grime on a global scale and thereby avoid crashing your computer with large amounts of image files.

An example of the book's typical clarity lies in this list of Top 10 principles of creating photorealistic images:

    1. Clutter and chaos
    2. Personality and expectations
    3. Believability
    4. Surface texture
    5. Specularity
    6. Aging--dirt, dust, and rot
    7. Flaws, tears, and cracks
    8. Rounded edges
    9. Object material depth
    10. Radiosity

The companion CD-ROM contains support files, models, and image map modeling templates to accompany the tutorials. If you're looking to create really real photorealistic images, this is a recommended resource, in true Fleming fashion. --Brooke Gilbert

Topics covered: Natural and industrial environments, creating buildings with natural elements (adobe, bricks, and boards), and working with natural scenes (ponds, puddles, grass, ground cover, and rocks).

    Book Description

This book takes you to the next level with advanced techniques for re-creating all the chaotic diversity found in nature. Thanks to the book's modular, learn-by-doing format, you'll quickly master proven, quality-enhancing, time-saving techniques for modeling, mapping, morphing, and surfacing that work for virtually all major 3D graphics programs and operating systems.

    You'll learn how to:
    * Identify the elements that make an image photorealistic using the 10 principles of photorealism.
    * Create extremely realistic details using image map models.
    * Add depth to your scenes with tileable image maps.
    * Surface complex organic structures with morph targets.
    * Use common tools to create water effects without high render time.
    * Re-create chaos in natural and industrial settings.

    On the CD-ROM you'll find:
    * All the support files you need to complete the exercises in the book.
    * Photorealistic models in 10 common file formats that you can use in any program on any platform.

    1 out of 5 stars Misleading Title.......2006-09-11

This book, like Bill's earlier one, deals mostly with detailing of models (geometry) only. It does not discuss materials in depth, or lighting, Global Illumination etc. So a large part of what makes scenes photrealistic is not touched upon. More importantly, his geometry detailing techniques will no doubt add a couple of zillion polygons. No discussion on that either- no scheme is presented to keep a count of polygons, or keep them within sensible limits.
Without proper lighting and materials, Bill does not really produce photorealistic results.
The description of imaginary worlds and creatures is unimaginative and tedious.
The underlying principles are noteworthy, but could be summarised in one page- which i think Bill *has* done: it's there somewhere on the net.

I bought this book and was very dissapointed. The things Mr. Fleming calls photorealistic look like they all are made from the same type of plastic. I cannot call this photorealistic

1 out of 5 stars Rehashed is a more accurate description.......2002-04-20

What a waste of money. It's barely worth the paper it is written on.

    1 out of 5 stars horrible writing.......2001-06-04

    hello,

i found some of the techniques to be useful for small scenes, but not at all useful for big 'architectural renderings' where clutter and chaos do not mesh well with architectural presentations. the organic modeling techniques were generally good for beginners.

however, i found the writing to be terrible, bill fleming spent half the pages describing these 'imaginary' creatures that were extremely painful to read through. i thought the book would be much better if bill had focused on the techniques rather than wasting page after page on the imaginary narrative of these little creatures.

i was interested in bill's other book on photorealism, but after reading this book, i am not so sure. although bill fleming spent alot time and effort in creating this book, the illustrations were in my opinion was fantasy-realistic, the imaginationary creatures used for the illustration were so 'un-believable' that perhaps the title might be changed to 'fantasy creatures toolkit'

sorry about the harsh criticism, but in my opinion, a poorly written book.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the small investment.......2001-05-09

Granted the term "photorealism" is perhaps a bit overused -- but characterizes well what Bill's artistic objectives are. This one of the books which I felt was most important in my moving solidly into the intermediate level of learning, and I still refer back to it from time to time.

In my experience, there are actually very few books on the market which really concentrate on surfacing knowledge, srategies, and techniques. Bill obviously used LightWave at that time, but he tries hard to keep things general -- and for the most part succeeds. Although some very useful modeling approaches are presented, they are directed specifically at making primarily image-mapped surfacing easier or more effective. It is primarily a surfacing book.

This book is, along with "Toolkit", a very useful addition to any serious 3D student's library and is my favorite among Bill's which I have read. I hope Bill reads this and is motivated to really dig into LightWave 6.x's excellent surfacing implementation and write a book on that, and there is really no good book out there at present on procedural surfacing -- probably because there you have to get program-specific.

Per a previous writer's reference to Jeremy Birn's book -- yes, it is excellent -- a must have, but covers different ground than this book. Another example of a must have for relative beginners (though I wouldn't recommend it until you have reached some level of competency with a decent 3D program) that will if studied thoroughly and applied in practice take you well beyond beginner.

5 out of 5 stars The best ATM book I have bought! (and I have bought several).......2000-04-23

This is the only book I know that covers more than the typical cell structure, layer model and traffic shapping algorithms in ATM. Chapter 4 explains very well the strategies for transporting IP over ATM (Classical IP, LANE, MPOA, MPLS, Tag Switching,, etc.), and PPP over ATM. It is recommended for readers who already have the theoretical ATM background, but wants to Implement real ATM networks. (It is also suitable for beginners in this field, that are not interested in very technical details about ATM).

      5 out of 5 stars Required Reference.......1999-11-30

I suppose that if someone were ready to tackle the next big protocol on his or her summer learning list, this probably wouldn't be the book to pick up. However for the enterprise professional that is already up on the protocols, this is an excellent reference. This book has been an invaluable resource for both myself and everyone in my organization. (We have multiple copies between us, and it's still difficult to find a copy!) So if you are just coming into the ATM world you should probably get some background and basics, but when you are ready to implement that enterprise solution and need to understand just what that Segmentation and Reassembly Sublayer is doing to your IP packets, You'll pick up this book without even thinking about it.

All in all I have found this book to be an excellent investment.

5 out of 5 stars Useful, clear if a little heavy........1999-04-22

A very useful book, broad in scope and clear in presentation I found it to be a reliable source. The only irritation; acronyms are allowed to flourish to an oppressive degree.

      Good Value

2 out of 5 stars Only for people who already understand ATM.......1999-02-26

I regret buying this book. Its exposition of the basic concepts is poor. In the section on AAL5, for example, the author digresses into detail only of interest to experts whilst explaining the basic concepts. This book has a VHAD (Very High Acronym Density). Although the book includes a glossary and a list of acronym expansions they are both incomplete. The author needs to work through the entire book line by line and make sure every acronym is in the list of acronym expansions or better still the glossary. If you understand ATM already though, there is a wealth of information here.

4 out of 5 stars ATM: Acronym Training Method.......1998-01-21

This book is very dry and best used as a supplement for another book. If you are just starting out then this book is not for you. The price is good though.

5 out of 5 stars Over a hundred questions, provides sample loan paperwork, and more.......2005-08-05

First-time home buyers have hundreds of questions about the entire process from start to finish, and there's no better place to look for answers than Bridget McCrea's Home Buyer's Question And Answer Book, which covers over a hundred questions, provides sample loan paperwork, and more. McCrea is a former Century 21 real estate agent: this background enables her to pick out the most common questions asked, and to answer them in clear, simple detail.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference guide for the first-time buyer.......2005-03-19

There are shelves of reference books available for home buyers, but I found this one to be of great help in explaining the step-by-step process of home buying.

Not only does the book guide you through the daunting task, but it explains terminology in fairly good depth that buyers are likely to run into while trying to buy a home. Words, phrases and acronyms such as contingencies, earnest money, clear title, ASHI and purchase agreement have become part of our vocabulary, thanks in part to this book.

I also appreciated the worksheets (some courtesy of Ginnie Mae) that help to prepare a potential buyer when viewing homes. The sheets encourage home buyers to look closely, take notes and prioritize needs. This is critical when you look at four or five houses in a single day and details can easily be blurred without an organized effort to keep the information for each house separate.

Though I don't think any one book can answer every home buyer's questions, this book was a great starting point for us as we sought to demystify the issues surrounding home buying. Highly recommended.
