Book Description
Hospital design speaks volumes about the beliefs and values of health care in general. For many years, hospital after hospital has been constructed in the interests of physicians, trustees, and administrators. Rarely has the patient been a top priority in facility design.
Design That Cares is a groundbreaking book written for decision makers. Including general guidelines, drawings, and instructive examples, this work develops an essential perspective previously absent from health care design. Design That Cares contains a plethora of concrete architectural advice that will serve as an excellent place for executives to begin in rethinking present facility design in health care.

Why aren't there more books like this?.......1999-09-23
I design buildings for a living and this book has permanently changed my outlook. Although about health care buildings, it's a blueprint for thinking about the needs of building occupants for any kind of institution. The authors obviously understand building users better than anyone I've ever dealt with. There are great insights in every chapter, and the sidebars alone are a great education. In my opinion this is required reading for architects and facility managers. The 2nd edition is even better than the first.
Book Description
A unique approach to painting in watercolor that won't be found anywhere else on the market
It may seem impossible to be able to ensure the success of a watercolor painting before the paintbrush hits paper, but the newest addition to our Artist's Library series proves that it can be done. Accomplished watercolorist Brenda Swenson breaks down the process of planning a painting into eight individual steps, which include choosing a format, planning out values, effectively using color, developing a center of interest, creating a visual path, incorporating variety, painting negative shapes, and introducing light and shadow. Then she combines the steps in one final painting to show how each step works together to produce a pleasing, successful work of art. With clear, step-by-step instruction and helpful hints from the artist, this book is unique because it focuses not only on the painting process itself, but also on experimenting and strategizing, which are essential to the painting process. This book shows readers that, when you plan ahead, taking the time to study the essential elements that create a painting will make the finished product more satisfying and rewarding.

undecided about current guide.......1999-02-22
Having not seen the new guide I hesitate to rate it, however I had the 2nd edition and it was shoddy. The sources were inaccurate and the addresses and phone numbers given were more often wrong than right. I feel they simply didn't fact-check their sources.

Authoritative work on United State's imperialism.......2002-07-28
Aside from virtually predicting the Colombian and Middle East conflicts the United State's currently finds herself embroiled in, Chomsky's World Orders Old and New offers a vast array of scholarly documentation to prove his over riding, and stunningly accurate thesis: American foreign policy is embarked upon for the benefit of the transnational corporations and wealthy Wall Street investors; the State Department, Pentagon, CIA and corporate owned media are their tools and propaganda apparatus to dominate the world's land, labor and resources.
The naivete of Chomsky's critics simply astounds me. It's as if they don't want to believe or acknowledge the pink elephant that's in the room. For some it seems they simply refuse to disbelieve the ridiculous fairy tales they were taught in grade school and by rightwing radio talkshow hosts about the well intentioned United State's government and its interventions abroad.
World Orders Old and New is a fantastic work that's filled with obscure references to sensational sources along with references from mainstream sources that are often buried beneath the stories about Clinton's sex life and the Juice's homicidal rampage. Moreover, Chomsky fills the book with quotes from our leaders that are hard to believe but impossible to ignore. Chomsky digs deep and unearths the quotes from old State Department flacks, which will leave you awed in there audacity.
In World Orders Old and New, Chomsky also touches upon the economic trends that have befallen 70% of the American domestic workforce. Primarily the fact that the Fortune 500 and unfair labor laws (dramatically favoring management) have assaulted American workers and the power for them to effectively organize strong unions. He vividly points out that wages for the typical U.S. worker have been on a steady decline since the early 1970's and that the number one cause for this is the business world's virtual destruction of unions -- the one avenue in which working people can have a say in their livelihoods.
The last chapter gives a detailed analysis of the Israeli Palestinian conflict, actually, as Chomsky demonstrates, that's somewhat of an inaccurate way to label the Mideast conflict. As World Orders Old and New so accurately points out, it should be considered the Israeli lawlessness and brutality campaign backed by billions of dollars in U.S. military and economic aid. Chomsky simply gives one the proof that Israel can get away with committing just about any human rights violation while at most the U.S. media will critize them in the most tepid way possible.
If one has never read Noam Chomsky, they should do themselves a favor and pick up World Orders Old and New, it will help them to understand why much of the international community holds the U.S. in contempt. The common citizens of the U.S. deserve better than what their current leaders are giving them. Chomsky's book will go a long way in helping others recognize the pink elephant sitting in the room. As an internationally respected linguistic philosopher, it appears Dr. Chomsky would have it no other way.
A useful intro to globalization and Palestine-Israel.......2000-07-30
Chomsky is a true scholar, as is evident in the way he supports his ideas and conclusions with his analyses of reports and news literature from all over the world. It takes a ruthless analytical mind to present ideas as mind-opening and--for most people outside the USA--as vindicating as his. Here Chomksy dissects the significance of prominent post-Cold War events such as the bombardment of Iraq, and casts a sharp eye on the march of economic internationalization in the 90s (GATT, NAFTA, WTO), as well as on the Palestinian predicament and how Israel continues to violate basic human rights in the Occupied Territories. Chomsky cogently argues that there is an over-arching theme in the hostile world of global politics, or about American foreign policy rather. The book can get dense for the simple reason that he presents so many reports and findings confirming the biased and elitist nature of the New York Times and other American media. The volume of the evidence he presents can make you slightly indifferent after the depression or fury it invokes, forcing you to put the book down every now and then. Nevertheless, if you are looking for concrete evidence, the three chapters and the notes are replete with them. His work is valuable because it also exposes you to media and op-eds in other countries. For example, it is shocking to read what Rabin, Peres, and other notable Israelis have had to say to Israeli newspapers and television about the Oslo Agreement, and the Palestinians in general. Because he avoids talking in a mystifying and technical way about global politics and economics, Chomskys simply cuts to the chase in his criticism of the political elites. On a lighter note, his analysis of the writings of prominent journalists and academics can put a grin on your face. I especially relish his treatment of Thomas Friedman.
The more things change, the more they stay the same........1999-04-28
The above could summarize Chomsky's book. The end of the Cold War should have brought big changes in foreign policy, but didn't because the Cold War was a front for superpower agression(mostly the U.S.'s),not so much a Soviet threat. Chomsky is armed(as usual) to the teeth with evidence and a cutting sarcasm, which together sear in his point. By giving a fresh interpretation of U.S. foreign policy based on evidence from a true variety of sources, he manages to shed some light on real policy, and to debunk governmental/elitist propaganda. His estimation of the goals of U.S. foreign policy is:get as much(influence, business opportunities for corporations)without losing too much(military casualties, public concern/attention,dollars,etc). This book is for people who base their views on evidence and NOT on what whatever someone tells them.
One of Chomsky's most fascinating books.......1999-04-03
When Chomsky came to speak in Oxford recently, several hundred people were turned away because the Sheldonian Theatre where he spoke was packed full to capacity. I have still not yet seen him in person, but fortunately he has published a wide variety of books.
Of the handful of Chomsky books that I have read, this is the one I've recommended most to other people. It contains a fascinating retelling of the history of American foreign relations since the second world war. Even for those who disagree, it is vital to come to grips with the arguments it presents.
It would be an especially helpful antidote for those who think that all truth springs from the economics textbook (you know who you are!)
Chomsky emphasises historical and political facts that we are likely to find uncomfortable. Some of things he has said have made me think, "He can't be right, can he?" But then despite my diligent searching of anti-Chomsky web pages (and, indeed, this reviews section!) I have yet to find any convincing rebuttals of his arguments. Most of the time, his detractors seem to focus on merely attacking him and misrepresenting his views, which is a good sign that there is probably a lot of truth in what he (Chomsky) is saying.
Yes, there is something of a conspiracy theorist on the surface of Chomsky. But underneath there is a surprising amount of evidence and logical argumentation. I think part of the genius of Chomsky's view of the world is that it DOESN'T actually take some far-fetched underground conspiracy, but merely the normal operation of the capitalist world system to bring about the situation we have found ourselves in.
Chomsky's analysis of "world orders" is not based on some kind of elaborate fantasy, but largely well documented recent history and political science. One doesn't have to be radical political activist to appreciate the unique perspective that Chomsky has to offer.
I think that this book is a engaging and worthwhile introduction to Chomsky's thinking from a more historical point of view.
Excellent - buy it immediately!.......1999-01-22
When it comes to analysing how the world is really run, very people can beat Chomsky. His work is brilliant, rigorously sourced and meticulously strips away the lies and propaganda that characterises the "New World Order" and its advocates. I find it laughable that a reviewer below critiques Chomsky for not having a political science background. Well mate, I'm doing a DPhil in International Relations and I can assure you that Chomsky is very well respected. Not of course by the extreme right who defend to the hilt the United States foreign policy, or Israel's behaviour, but by thinking people who aspire to a better world. The comments about Chomsky's "defence" of Robert faurisson are way off beam - they've been comprehensively refuted not only by Chomsky himself but also by journalists such as Christopher Hitchens. I'm surprised the reviewer below is ignorant of such facts. Aside from this, buy this book - it is one of the most important works on global politics to emerge in the post-Cold War era.
Book Description
For a thousand years the monasteries and religious orders played a major role in the society, economy and culture of the west and this book traces the Western monastic tradition in its social context, from its fourth-century origins in the deserts of Egypt and Syria through to the many and various forms of religious life it assumed during the Middle Ages. Among many topics, the author examines monastic studies and the relationship between the cloister and the schools, the controversy between the Benedictines and the spokesmen of the reformed monasticism of the twelfth century and the social composition of the nunneries and the particular problems that confronted women in the religious life. For readers interested in medieval or religious history.

A Good Book on the Cradle of the Renewal of Western Civilization.......2007-02-18
C.H. Lawrence's MEDIEVAL MONASTICISM is a good summary of the origins of monasticism from c. 500 A.D. to c. 1500 A.D. Lawrence examines the earliest monastistic movements throught the Age of the Friars or about 1400. His comparisons and contrasts of the different abbots and abbesses give readers an introduction of the complexity of Medieval monastic movements.
The early sections of the book give the reader a good introduction to early monastic movements both in Italy, France, and Ireland. One reviewer suggested that Lawrence should have given more attention to St. Patrick (389-461)which may be a valid criticism. However, readers should know that they can get a good assessment of the Irish Celtic monks and nuns c. page 40 to page 51. An interesting anecdote is that the Irish monastics included women who rose to positions of prominence as teachers and even leaders of some monastaries.
An interesting conflict among the Medieval monastic leaders was that of of seclusion or cloistered monks vs. those who wanted to do do missionary work and teach. The discipline imposed on monks and nuns seems too severe and strange to modern readers, but Mr. Lawrence tries to contrast the life of a cloistered monk or nun with that of secular men and women and their difficult lives at a time when living standards were not even remotely as high as they are now in the 21st. century. To paraphrase one of Lawrence's quotes attribauted to St. Bernard of Clairvaux, the latter said that the Cistertian monks were to lament and not to evangelize. This conflict was brought into clear focus in the disputes between St. Berard and St. Peter the Venerable.
Much of the book deals with these conflicts between leaders of different orders. When the Mendicant orders such as the Franciscans or Friars Minor (The Little Brothers)began their order, St. Francis of Assissi was adament about Franciscan poverty and refused to let any of his brothers to own any property at all. Yet, as Lawrence makes clear, this extreme poverty could not last if the Franciscans were to have facilities to assist the poor and the forgotten. As Lawerence explains, the Franciscans became imbued with the New Learning or Scholasticism that swept Medieval European Universities in the 12th and 13th centuries (the 1100s and 1200s). Even the cloistered monks were attracted to the New Learning and sent some of their monks to the universities which dismayed, among others, St. Bernard of Clairvaux. The Order of Preachers or Dominicans were clearly a missionary and learned order who were very attracted to Scholasticism and university teaching and learning. The Domincans were taught so they could counter arguments of heretics such as the Albigensians. The Dominican Friars produced some of the best men in philosophy such as St. Thomas Aquinas. The Franciscans could boast about St. Bonaventure and William of Occam. In other words, what began as cloistered orders of contemplative monks became a "more worldly" arrangement whereby the latter Medieval monks and frairs contributed not only to missionary efforts but the creative teaching and scholarship.
One minor criticism of this book is that C.H. Lawrence should have given more attention to the Dominicans and the influence that the Friars exerted on Medieval university learning and scholarship. Of all the achievements of the Medieval Catholic Church, the development of the universities was one of their most enduring. C.H. Lawrence may have considered beyond the scope of his book.
In spite of this mild criticism, C.H. Lawrence wrote a good book. He explains the history and the seemingly strange monastic phenomenon to modern readers who might otherwise think that Medieval monks and nuns were not rational men and women to submit to such strict discipline and rules. This book is recommended to anyone who is interested in Medieval History which was an lively and interesting age.
The Medieval World.......2006-08-22
Medieval Monasticism is a scholarly book, which keeps the readers interest and it flows well. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in looking at the Medieval Ages from another point of view, enjoys learning about the different church orders, or mere someone finds the Medieval World confusing. I am a medieval history student, who enjoys learning about the military order and wanted to learn a bit more about monasticism as a whole and this book gives a great overview. A word of caution, this is a scholarly book and not a narrative. So, be prepared to learn.
College Textbook on Monastacism.......2005-11-04
C.H. Lawrence is Professor Emeritus of Medieval History at the University of London and has authored this textbook on monasticism from roughly 200 A.D. to 1300 A.D. It's basically what you'd expect from a history textbook that covers over 1000 years: it hits the highlights, shows the major trends, and briefly explains why certain persons, intitutions, etc. are important.
In general, I liked this book. For a textbook, Lawrence is pretty engaging in his writing style and he doesn't overwhelm the reader with too many proper nouns or jargon words in a row. Furthermore, he attempts to give a sense of personality and/or importnace of major historical figures. In reading this book, I get a better sense of famous monks (Bernard of Clairvioux, St. Benedict, St. Columbanus, Peter the Venerable, etc.) than I expected. Lawrence also does a good job when he describes life at particular monestaries/orders and how they differ from monestaries in other times and places.
An aspect of this textbook--necessary for such an undertaking--is that some areas get more attention than others. The Desert Fathers get a pretty good treatment as do St. Colambanus, the Cluny monestary, and the Friars (among others). Things that don't get as much attention are aspects of monastic life in Ireland, Italy, and Spain (France, England, and Germany get a lot of attention); the reforms of Pope Gregory, and detailed liturgical/hymnody advancements. Furthermore, as Lawrence leads us in our march through a thousand years of history, he really doesn't connect "what's going on in the monestary" with "what's going on in the rest of the world." This book assumes a fairly decent knowledge of Midieval European history.
In all, if you really want to read a texbook on monks, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better one. But if you're looking for a nice beach read or something to curl up with on a cold winter's night (and are actually considering a textbook on monks!), I would direct you to something else. But, hey. Whatever foats your boat.
Comprehensive work, but wheres St. Patrick?.......2003-05-16
This book sets out to provide a general overview of medieval monasticism. Starting with it's development in the 3rd Century in the Middle East, Lawrence describes it's early forms, such as strict adherence to ascetism, cenobitism or a combination, and key founders such as Pachomius and Basil. He then traces its spread westward and the explosion of monasticism that occurred shortly after Benedict wrote his Rule for monastic life. From here he touches on Irish monasticism, though perhaps not as thoroughly as warranted, as well as Columbanus and his work in Gaul with the Merovingians. Interestingly, he mentions St. Patrick only briefly and, to me, massively understates Patrick's role in founding the Celtic church and subsequent Irish Monasticism. Perhaps a bit of English bias? To continue, Lawrence examines the founding and influence of Cluny as the first "restoration of Benedictine life" as well as its decline and how it was eventually eclipsed by the Cistercians and subsequently the Friars, each of which also claimed to be getting back to the roots of Benedict's Rule.
Throughout, he details not only the religious but also the secular roles that monasteries played in medieval life. These include such topics as the social, economic and political roles played by monasteries and their abbots. The effects of lay patronage and feudal obligations on monastic life are also detailed. He also describes the rise, decline and fall of the Knightly orders as well as the role of women in monastic life, detailing the Cistercian nuns and Beguines in particular. A discussion of the Friars concludes the work. In this, he details their origins and how they believed in a life of piety among the people rather than separated from them. This led to them undertaking roles as preachers and Samaritans among the populace. He also details how the Friars came in conflict with the clergy (as they often siphoned off parishioners and, concomitantly, money, from established parishes) and the resolution of the dispute. He concludes by detailing the decline of the monasteries, both in numbers and importance, as the need for their social assistance declined and a more secular life became prevalent. Lawrence's overview is well researched, annotated and easy to read. The included glossary is an immense help for the monastic neophyte!
monasticism's meandering monks.......2002-01-14
Lawrence's work provides a good foundation for anyone interested in studying medieval Europe. He traces monasticism from its roots in the deserts of the Middle East to the great Cluniac and Cistercian monasteries of France. Unfortunately, he is biased towards Citeaux and focuses his book on abbots and leaders. If someone wants to learn about the average monk, read the Rule of St. Benedict. If someone wants to begin to understand the evolution of monasticism, then this is one of the best books out there.
Book Description
The Monastic Order in England by Dom David Knowles was originally published in 1940 and was quickly recognised as a scholarly classic and masterpiece of historical literature. It covers the period from about 940, when St Dunstan inaugurated the monastic reform by becoming abbot of Glastonbury, to the early thirteenth century. Its core is a marvellous narrative and detailed analysis of monasticism in twelfth-century England, brilliantly set in the continental background of all the monastic movements of the day - with a vivid evocation of Anselm, Ailred, Henry of Blois and a host of other central figures. Dom David himself brought this second edition up to date in 1963.

Book Description
Opens up an important subject and present the findings of much diligent research. It is a significant contribution to the history of the political life and culture of the later medieval aristocracy. MAURICE KEEN Orders of lay knights - the most famous of which are those of the Garter and the Golden Fleece - were founded at some time between 1325 and 1470 in almost every kingdom of Western Christendom, and played an important part in the life of the court. Jonathan Boulton defines the `monarchical' orders as those with corporate statutes which attached the presidential office to the crown of the princely founder, or made it hereditary in his house. Modelled either directly or indirectly on the fictional society of the Round Table, they incorporated varying numbers of elements borrowed from the older religious orders of knighthood and from contemporary institutions. This study explores the nature and history of thirteen orders, and reveals them as not only an ingenious supplement to (or replacement for) the feudo-vassalic ties that still bound the leading members of the nobility to their sovereign, but also as the most important institutional embodiments of the secular ideals of chivalry that were at the heart of the international court culture of the age. JONATHAN BOULTON teaches at the University of Notre Dame.
