I found this book to be very helpful to my work as a consulting planner. The stories are excellent reminders of the battles hard fought. I agree that projects are better for the public process they go through. There has not been a good book on this subject, so Ms. Faga has written a great book for students, professionals and community activists alike.

it really isn't a helpful book. everything is not laid out in the book comfortably either. you jump from topic to topic without really going through anything completely. their are much better books out there then this

In 1953, Peter Keetman spent a week at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg. The result was a series of exceptionally clear, almost abstractly detailed photographs that document the entire production process of the VW Beetle. Storage stacks of shiny metal bumpers look like so many modernist sculptures; car bodies hovering above the assembly line retrospectively form a surreal Pop Art montage. This oversize publication reproduces the Volkswagenwerk series in full, in their original size, together with texts that refer both to this series and to Keetman's greater oeuvre. Keetman was known throughout his career as photographer of systemically conceived picture series on themes that included close-ups of water and oil drops, a style of working he developed as a member of Fotoform. Fotoform, a German movement of the 1950s of which Keetman was a primary proponent, was critical in the development of German photography as it is today: the group's "subjective photography" combined scientific objectivity with abstraction.

A lot of the photos are "arsty fartsy," showing piles of doors, fenders and the like. I was assuming that all the photos would be of the factory rather than including so many "mood" shots.

Stumped in your proposal writing? Enraged by another rejected grant request? What was the Stupid Foundation looking for that you didn't have? This book will give you answers: some original, others you can find elsewhere.
As a guide to framing your proposal, what good proposals look, sound, and feel like, this book is extremely useful. In the heat of the battle to win funding, it's easy to succumb to tunnel vision, neglecting the foundation's point of view. McIlnay not only reminds the grantseeker that they have to sell their proposal, but explains what foundations seek. It's particularly astute on the political culture and internal dynamics of foundations.
"How Foundations Work" is written in a direct, though often plodding, style. But in a field where too much of the writing is namby-pamby, it gets points simply for uncluttered clarity.
