The Big Book of Small House Designs: 75 Award-Winning Plans for Your Dream House, All 1,250 Square Feet or Less
ASIN: 1580173721 |
Book Description
The cottage holds a special place in our minds and hearts as a place of retreat, peace, and relaxation as well as an expression of a family's own personality. In this elegantly illustrated book, architect and teacher Catherine Tredway presents 25 unique plans for a variety of cottages designed to meet a wide range of needs and lifestyles.
Inspired by the many regions of North America, Tredway's designs feature the
distinctive architectural elements of an Adirondack cottage in the woods, a Minnesota lakeside cottage, a California cottage by the sea, and more. In addition, each design incorporates architectural details unique to a particular region and is shown in the author's full-color rendering accompanied by elevation views, floor plans, and close-up drawings and photographs of architectural details. The text highlights the historical background of the architectural style on which the design draws.
Part practical plans book and part inspirational idea book, this exploration of the beauty, function, and style of the cottage is a must for cottage owners, would-be cottage owners, and those who just like to dream.
Customer Reviews:
It's okay.......2007-08-03
The book was okay, not quite what I thought it was going to. It does have some interesting plans, but not what I was looking for.
25 Plans for Retreats, Cabins and Beach Houses.......2007-01-29
Nicely illustrated exteriors and floor plans, good photographs, lots of suggestions, and a bit of education thrown in. Well worth reading.
Could have been better.......2006-08-16
There are some ok ideas in this book but it suffers greatly from a cramped layout. It's not easy to browse and most of the photo are cropped so close one almost feels claustrophobic just flipping through the pages
disappointing.......2006-01-23
Although there are pictures scattered throughout the book, they are mainly of small details and accents, rather than a total view of the houses. Also, it seemed that some of the pictures were not even of the design that was being featured. I found it difficult to get any perspective of relative dimensions or the overall feel of the design from simple line drawings and floor plans. Perhaps a better book for someone more familiar with architectural drawings than for someone just starting out and looking for inspiration. Finally, not many of the designs were of what I would call a cottage, with square footage at, or higher than most average homes.
Beautiful Dreamer.......2001-11-03
This lovely book proves that a picture is worth a thousand words. I am in the beginning stages of planning my dream retirement home, and I have been looking for a few select books to convey the sense of style I want. This book is the best I have found so far. Tredway's designs are very well thought out -both beautiful AND liveable looking. There are lots of photos of completed structures along with the floor plans and elevations. Please note that as of 11/03/01, the web-site listed in the book is not working. Highly recommended book.

Very Dissappointed.......2005-06-27
I am a builder who was looking for ideas on cottage decore for sea shore homes. This book would be more aptly titled "Modern Architecture by the Sea". The homes featured in this book had nothing to do with most peoples' preconceived ideas of what a "cottage" looks like. I am returning the book for a refund.

Just back from my Bermuda Honeymoon.......2001-07-28
This book was our Bible in Bermuda on our honeymoon! For the most part this guide was right on the mark. Some of the restaurant reviews were off (The Shepards Pie at the Swizzle Inn is little more than chilli with mashed potatoes on top, and jackets really weren't required for men at dinner anywhere we dined over the week) but for the most part it was very helpful.
Excellent!!! All you need to plan your trip to Bermuda.......1998-08-10
Amazon's synopsis is right on. The book is thorough, concise. Covers every aspect of planning your trip, then is a constant companion while you're there--restaurant recommendations, sightseeing guide, good maps, guidance on finding the best beaches.
I disagreed only with Fodor's take on the dress code. Guys, you don't really have to wear Bermuda shorts if you prefer other styles. And you won't feel bad without a tie in the nicer restaurants. I saw a lot of mixed-dressing couples (no, not cross dressing!)--she's wearing a nice dress and he's in shorts and loafers without socks.
I found it helpful in selecting my hotel to look at lush color photos available on the Web (always lacking in guide books due to cost and space).
Finally, as always, Amazon will get your book to you real fast.

At the Cottage
ASIN: 0771034148
Release Date: 2006-05-02 |
Book Description
In 1989, Charles Gordon wrote a book about the joys of life at the cottage called, well, At the Cottage. It was a huge success, selling thousands of copies every year since then. A copy sits, dog-eared and smeared with sunscreen, in every cottage worthy of the name, right beside the bird book with the missing pages.
Now, showing the same creative spirit when it comes to names, comes Still at the Cottage. Readers will be surprised to learn that some things have changed in cottage country, which is now real estate. Suburbanism proceeds apace; the store at the dock now stocks lawncare items (this is bad). But it also stocks more fruits and vegetables (this is good).
Gordon pokes affectionate fun at the surprising new technology available to people heading for the simple life at the cottage. He even proposes a solution to solve neighbour conflicts: some lakes should be zoned as napping lakes, others as jet ski lakes, others possibly as jerk lakes, and so on.
Monster cottages may gobble up rocks and trees, and traffic on and to the lake may be much worse. But this book, like the slap of the screen door, will remind you instantly why the cottage is a special place that needs a copy of this very funny book.

Customer Reviews:
don't judge this book by it's cover !.......2006-11-15
don't judge this book by it's cover !
the cover led me to believe the contents of this how-to art book would be sub-par, but for under two dollars (the used price) i was willing to take a chance and find out for sure. i am glad i did !
whoever selected the artwork for the cover should be fired (this had to be an intern at the publisher) for making such a terrible choice - this is the weakest (by a long shot) illustration in the entire book and is not representative of the contents at all ... i don't know how it came to be included in the book at all, now that i think about it
what the book does cover is basic character development (illustrating the drawing basics) for a wide range of characters, who are initially shown in simple poses (which helps to avoid unnecessarily complicating matters at this point). next come body and face drawing details, and then there are character development illustrations showing how slight changes can affect a character (this can be used to avoid mistakes or refine a character of your own). another section shows characters involved in a wide range of action poses, and there is also a collection of hand poses, with hands holding various weapons, and other items, in a variety of angles, etc. which should very useful to anyone without a model sheet. finally there are a few pages covering fabrics and folds in a business suit ... very simply demonstrated. and, of course, there is the obligatory section on materials and how to use them
and, finally, the book makes no claims to demonstrate rendering magna, or painting realistic landscapes - how do some people get so easily confused ?
Heroes? Cool! Love the poses collection!.......2005-01-26
The one I had was the original Japanese version, but they are the same anyway, so I hope my review will be helpful to you in a sense. ^^ Well, as mentioned in the book title “Super Character Design & Poses Volume 1: Hero”, this book teaches you how to draw Heroes, including “heroic” poses as well.
The book starts off with a few works of the artist, along with some explanations to help you determine what consists of the characteristics of a “hero”. Then the book moves on to teaching you how to draw heroes’ bodies, faces and hair. And there is also a section on hero’s character design and some basic pen’s techniques.
What I find really useful is the “poses” collection at the back of the book. There’re many really cool and dynamic poses of the hero in a variety of categories such as “fly”, “blade”, “run”, “kick”, “punch”, shot”, “bicycle”, “hand” and so forth. I wish there were more selection and collection of poses though, but I guess it’s understandable given the limited space of the book.
Also, there’s a CD-Rom that comes with the book. This CD-Rom contains the same -drawings as the book so you can use it to practice drawing or coloring. The only minus I can think about is book is that some of the characterizations have a certain “American” look to it. But then again, it’s probably the way the mangaka wants it to be.
Overall, it’s a great resource and reference book to have especially if you’re drawing lots of “hero” stuff!
A n00b on the l00se?.......2003-04-14
This book, is very, very poorly translated...
It's important that you understand, that this books does
NOT teach you HOW to draw Manga(I say manga, because that's
what his style looks like, but he doesn't claim anywhere
that it indeed IS manga)!
Rather, it gives you a lot of good examples on what a hero could
look like, and the poses they could be in.
The artist is a beginner, and I could do some of the drawings a lot better...
The included CD-ROM, though, is pretty nifty with all the same
drawings from the book. I've found this to be extremely useful
for learning how to color pictures in photoshop...
Buy it at your own risk, make sure to check it at a bookstore
first, and have a look at it for yourself.

Not For Everyday Reading, But Your Bookshelf Better Have One.......2001-10-20
As part of my enriching my knowledge of managing non-profits, I have just finished this book. Not a very exciting read from the entertainment standpoint, but the content, there's the rub. There is so much to absorb from this book, it's exciting to be exposed to all the information. Thus, the need to keep reading it (and the 5 stars).
There will. be no hints to the specific content of this book, you'll get to be surprised when you read it. Contained in this book though are a variety of Marketing Strategies for the non-profit department manager. The Chief Executive should also read this book and be enlightened to the challenges that face a Marketing Department. There are many lessons for all non-profit managers here, and the fact that everyone needs to be a Marketer may be the most important.
The writing style is short, but direct. No florid language, but smooth direction with vital information in each and every paragraph. there are many examples of charts and study questions, facts and figures. It's not the ultimate how-to book on how to run a marketing campaign, but damn near. The materials are thought provoking and clear, challenging and easy to comprehend. When I finished, I felt like I had learnt a lot, and I'm ready to go out a prove it!!
If marketing is somehow in your future, then make this book a #1 of #2 (with the Kotler book) purchase. Read and absorb, or refer to occasionally. Just remember, you better have had exposure to it, because your competitor might have.

Book Description
In this innovative, practical guide, Alvin H. Reiss shows how dozens of organizations have developed creative strategies for tackling the real-life fundraising, marketing, and management challenges that nonprofits face every day.

The book offers accessible, adaptable strategies for dealing with a broad spectrum of nonprofit concerns, such as increasing attAndance at special events, stepping up board involvement in fundraising, and handling negative press. Throughout the book, Reiss poses the practical questions readers need to answer in order to apply the case study strategies to their own organizations' experience.

A First-Aid Kit: Not Comprehensive Medical Teatment.......2001-02-21
This book is a collection of forty-six 3-page vignettes arranged into chapters on major challenges facing a nonprofit: marketing, public relations, making a special event work well, board issues, soliciting corporate donors, etc. The stories, many drawn from New York City-area nonprofits, are designed to show how the profiled organization faced a challenge, planned a response, and achieved a result. Challenge, plan, and result -- "CPR."
Each vignette uses the "CPR" format, followed by "questions to ask" (if you're facing the same challenge), "lessons learned," and "last word," usually a one-sentence summation of the "moral" of the story.
All kinds of organizations are profiled, and it was fun to see CharityChannel regulars as Lynn Shaftic-Averill among the experts sought for their expertise and "war stories." "The Pig that Saved the 'Y'" chronicles the success of the YWCA of the Tonawandas in staving off financial collapse. They used a board member's connection with a local nonprofit theater to arrange for a benefit showing of the movie "Babe" as a joint fundraiser, and the 'Y' was saved from serious and imminent financial danger. The film showings are now annual fundraising events.
Like the first-aid kit on the cover, the book contains a lot of tools that are specific to a situation. Just as you wouldn't use all the tools in the first aid kit at the same time, the book is best read sporadically, almost as a reference manual, when you're looking for help or inspiration.
Unfortunately, also like the first-aid kit, the book is unable to provide comprehensive relief, or information, for the patient/reader seeking assistance. To say that the book uses a "band-aid" approach sounds pejorative, but it really isn't. Band-aids are important tools, as are many of the stories in the book. However, people buying this book believing that they'll find the answers for an organization in trouble will be disappointed.
CPR for Nonprofits is a good "ready-reference" book for stimulating ideas and brainstorming, best read in small doses over time. If symptoms persist, you'll need to look elsewhere for additional help.

Book Description
"Privatizing" public resources by creating stronger property rights is an increasingly popular environmental policy option. While advocates of these "market-based' approaches tend to f5ocus on their efficiency and ecological implications, the policies also raise important considerations of equity and distributive justice. Private Rights in Public Resources confronts these ethical implications by showing that, despite their limited attention as subjects of academic study, equity ideas have long had an influence in environmental policy. It argues that equity issues should be considered more explicitly in both the analysis and formulation of environmental policy.
Leigh Raymond investigates equity norms through original studies of two important environmental laws, the Acid Rain Title of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) and the 1934 Taylor Grazing Act (TGA). He reviews legislative records, administrative documents, and interviews key policymakers. Confirming that much of the debate in the two programs centered on the equity or fairness of the initial allocation of property rights, he then uses the theories of John Locke, Morris Cohen and others to build a framework for identifying the competing norms of equity in play.
Raymond's study reveals that, despite the different historical and ecological settings, the political actors in the two cases struggled to reconcile similar arguments--and were able to achieve a similar synthesis of conflicting ownership ideas. He notes that the prominence of equity arguments in the debates and decisions about allocations contradict traditional views that the TGA and the CAAA simply "grandfathered" rights to existing users.
Raymond extends his analysis to ongoing national and international debates about allocations of greenhouse gas emissions. He demonstrates how ideas about equity and fairness operate in the context of global climate change, where there is less structure in the political, legal, and scientific context of the policy debate.
