Customer Reviews:
I loved this book!.......2001-11-26
Contrary to one of the commentaries on this book, I loved it. I have read over 25 Feng Shui books and felt Mr. Skinner's version was put together very logically, with beautiful pictures, and is easy to follow. I would recommend this book for both beginners and knowlegeable people. I just brought it home from Thanksgiving vacation and used to it help my mother understand Feng Shui as we worked on her house. Great Book!
Big Glossy Pictures, Little Information.......2001-05-14
This is the sort of book you leave lying around on your coffee table, but that no one actually picks up and reads. It has lots of beautiful glossy pictures and is quite attractive. But as for information on feng shui is concerned, I learned very little. A lot of the time the book seemed to think you already knew all about it, so why both getting into the details of how feng shui works, rather lets put in a lot of pretty pictures and vague, common sense commentary. I know nothing about feng shui. But I can tell you that i learned as much as what i learned from reading this book, by browsing at various feng shui books at the local bookstore for 10 minutes. If you're interested in snooty glamorous home decorating, you'll probably like this book. if you're looking to learn about feng shui and how to apply it to your life, find some other book. If you want a pretty coffee table book, this is a good choice. it gets a 2 for all the nice pictures. disappointing.
A colorful, involving, revealing, explanatory guide........2000-09-07
This colorful guide shows how the concepts of feng shui can be integrated with contemporary home style, packing in over 200 color photos to illustrate the point. The focus not only on explaining feng shui but associating it with modern home interior design style makes for a revealing and involving guide.

Customer Reviews:
Best for the 'True' Beginner.......2004-01-17
Right off the bat, let me state unequivically: This is a very good book. Maybe the best so far. It is certainly the clearest only because it contains all the important stuff. And THEREIN LIES the problem: The important stuff will be mumbo-jumbo to those who have no idea what the Black-hat Tantric Buddhism teaching is all about.
It might be fair to make this parallel: You're gonna have to know some math (maybe a lot) to really understand Einstein's theory of relativity. By "understand," I mean, the whole cosmological implication and assumption embedded in that theory. It would be unfair to pass judgment on E's theory one way or the other without such an understanding. One can either accept it provisionally until such an understanding becomes possible, or, one passes it up for something that makes more sense right now. In other words, take it (and study it so you can see it or even knock it) or leave it.
This book is completely based on Master Lin Yun's condensation of BTB Feng Shui, and one must either take it or leave it, unfortunately. Why? Because one needs to know where BTB is coming from, of what vast amount of various traditions it is an amalgamation, and most importantly, the core of BTB that is beyond the reach of all and any trappings of tradition, as such. It is this last element -- the freedom of movement and free association -- that makes BTB what it is and what it was: a powerful shortcut to "certain things" by way of rockclimbing (hence its dangerousness), as opposed to a long walk along the hiking trail of spiritual ascent.
This book is not out to convince. Nor is it intended to serve as a book of formulas, although this book also has some very valuable instructions regarding certain rituals.
Take it as a very reliable transcription of some of Master Lin Yun's lectures. But one must have a working vocabulary of the spiritual traditions that constitute the vessel of knowledge that is the BTB to really understand what is being said in this book. One could rely on "faith" but that is not a good idea in the long run, as Lin Yun himself will tell you. The aim of BTB Feng Shui is understanding (of what -- you figure it out), not belief.
All good things are good, and always open, but only to those who WANT to experience it. This book is for the 'True Beginner': The one who is always beginning to take the next step toward an understanding, no matter how far along the path s/he has come already. SVAHA!
Not for the Feng Shui Beginner.......2001-08-17
This book takes the reader beyond standard Feng Shui into Black Sect Feng Shui, which tends to use the Feng Shui concepts in a looser manner than traditional Feng Shui. If you're interested in internalizing Feng Shui as a lifestyle and spiritual undertaking, this book is good. If you want to know how to organize your home or office to improve balance and organization using Feng Shui concepts, and to see good examples, there are better books out there.
STEVEN POST IS A WALKING ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FENG SHUI KNOWLEDGE.......1999-07-17
If you want to learn Feng Shui secrets, this book is for you! Life changing knowledge is contained within this book. It's apparent the author eats, sleeps and breathes Feng Shui.
A simple yet profound, guidebook of Feng Shui knowledge........1999-04-13
Mystical yet practical, The Modern Book of Feng Shui provides a comprehensive foundation and a technical bible of Feng Shui wisdom for the home and office. Written by the first teacher of Feng Shui in the United States, this work combines deep knowledge of Feng Shui tradition with a comprehensive awareness of how Feng Shui is related to the wisdom arts of many cultures. Written for the beginner, The Modern Book of Feng Shui is the finest presentation yet for both the beginner and the expert!
A masters penning, precise in detail, with good pedagogy........1998-07-29
This written work is the epitome of pedagogic endeavor towards the instruction and education of Feng Shui. A masters penning, precise in detail. Feng Shui levels and cures categorized in a written path of explanation for the neophyte or the certified Feng Shui consultant.

Customer Reviews:
Solve Those Nagging Problems in your Life.......2005-04-26
This isn't a book to read cover-to-cover, instead you browse through finding the problems that match your situation. Reading those gives you very specific solutions based on feng shui principles.
The topics divide under Health, Wealth, Relationships, Family, and Career. The problems are very applicable to average peoples' lives. "How can I adopt a more positive attitude?" "How can I put passion back into our relationship?" "How can I change the fragmented, do-your-own-thing family life we have?" "How can I correct my chronic lateness and disorganization at work?"
The solutions fill one page each and describe placement, color, and other feng shui techniques to change the situation. Over 100 questions are answered in the book. Most people will find a good number that apply to different situations in their lives.
A number of double-page spreads explain basic feng shui tools (mirrors, plants, sounds, patterns/shapes, colors, building materials, dimensions) or principles (eight directions, nine ki astrology, five elements, yin/yang, chi energy).
The use of color and layout enhance the appeal of the book.
Have a problem? Let's fix it..........2000-12-31
I've very much enjoyed Simon Brown's other books on feng shui but was still surprised how much value I got out of this one. The bulk of the book is spent giving solutions to very specific and common life dilemmas interspersed with short pieces on the basic principles of feng shui. I found it easy to identify and remedy what in my home was going in a direction I didn't want to go. I previously had been strengthening compass directions that needed compensating for, instead. I also learned alot about the balance of yin and yang and how fundamental this balance is to moods, life tendencies and choosing which solution to implement. An easy to read book with lots of nice visuals.

Product Description
'Feng Shui in the City' meets the needs of the urban dweller living in a fast-paced world. It was designed to be easily read and understood by just about anyone. In fact, it can be considered the feng shui starter book for the reader who does not know anything about feng shui. As a handy to-the-point reference, this book is ideal for existing homeowners as well as to those who are thinking of buying a new home. The rationale behind this book in relation to helping such people is that one should not have to risk ending up with an unsuitable house or apartment after having spent one's life savings on it. A picture speaks a thousand words, so the saying goes, and in trying to explain the principles of feng shui theory, nothing speaks louder than photographs of real locations and surroundings. After all, these are the forms found all around us, and this book is based on the 'Form' school of feng shui. The form and shape of any building or object can influence the balance of harmony with one's surroundings, ultimately leading to good or bad conditions, which can be seen as prosperity or disaster. Of course, if you do not become as rich as you wish to be, at least you would have made a positive effort to acquire a better-than-average life for yourself and your loved ones. You certainly can work towards being healthier and happier with increased family harmony while avoiding any disastrous situations that can threaten the stability of your household.

Book Description
Since its founding seven years ago by Pace Foods heiress Linda Pace, ArtPace has become one of the premiere foundations for contemporary art. An artist residency program based in San Antonio, Texas, ArtPace's goal is to give artists time and space in which to imagine new ways to work. Each year, nine artists (three from Texas, three from other areas of the United States, and three from abroad) are invited to the foundation to create new work. Selected by guest curators the likes of Robert Storr and Okwui Enwezor, the list of artists who have undertaken residencies at ArtPace is impressive, prescient, and diverse, including Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Annette Messager, Tracey Moffatt, Xu Bing, Nancy Rubins, Cornelia Parker, IOigo Manglano-Ovalle, Glenn Ligon, Kendell Geers, Carolee Schneemann, Mona Hatoum, Isaac Julien, Arturo Herrera, and Christian Jankowski. Dreaming Red includes illustrations of all the works created at ArtPace since its inception, an essay by art historian Eleanor Heartney, short essays on selected artists by the guest curators, including CuauhtEmoc Medina , Lynne Cooke, Chrissie Iles, and Judith Russi Kirshner, and a lengthy essay on the personal history of the foundation and its founder.
Customer Reviews:
Art as Healing.......2004-01-07
This is an unusual and fascinating book. The author is very open about personal tragedies and then explains how the interaction with the artists at ArtPace has been curative and mind expanding. The art is of the most edgy, but the author is clear about the thinking behind the images and the processes. The photos are beautiful, the book is a treat to look at and to think about. It should appeal to any thoughtful person and give contemporary art scoffers something to ponder.

Book Description
Wang Quingsong may be China's answer to David LaChappelle or Pierre et Gilles. His grand, staged photographs have been featured in exhibitions at the International Center of Photography, San Diego Musuem of Art, and the Contemporary Art Center, Montreal. Qingsong's recent tableau photographs are allegories based on masterpieces--both Eastern and Western. Qingsong's modern re-productions are replete with all the kitch and irony of today's Chinese society, in which the old world frequently mingles (to varied results) with the new.

Customer Reviews:
Elementary, My Dear -- BUT SOME GREAT INFO.......2004-11-04
I thought this book was on the "kindergarden" side but aside from that, there was good information through-out the book. Some of the list that Nash suggests goes on for miles - read through them and pick out the ones that will benefit you. I think this book is great for the layperson or the beginner who has no direction or training. Not all brokers have time to train a newbie, so this book will surely be a great help.
Barbara Nash puts the information out there so it is up to the sales associate to gather that info and use it to make their career efforts easier.
If you want to look into this book before buying it, check it out at your local library and then decide for yourself. That is what I did and when I read through it, I bought it for my own benefit in the future.
Great stuff!
Some good info, but really elementary!.......2001-02-24
Even if you are just starting out at real estate, as I am, you could get away with not reading this book. Barbara Nash-Price does a very basic job explaining some techniques and ideas for selling real estate, finding buyers, and getting listings. She spends FAR too much time, however, using long, useless lists that include: what to give your 'personal assistant' to do (that's almost two pages - and WHO can afford a personal assistant??), how to organize your daily planner (this takes up nearly a chapter), and even a list of sample "ads", which is nice, but do we really need pages and pages and pages and pages of that?
The book is written probably at a 6th grade reading level, and is punctuated with lots of double spaced text, lots of quotation marks (which she uses LIBERALLY), lots of CAPITAL LETTERS, and plenty of red text. You can read this book in one day if you sit still for a couple of hours. This book also includes an utterly useless guide to purchasing a computer. It is evident that Ms. Nash-Price has no computer knowledge (to be fair, she does state this in the book) since she boldly tells us that a 286 with a 20-40 MG hard drive should be sufficient. If you can find a 286 for SALE these days, I would be shocked. Despite the age of this text, I would think that anyone using a computer on a daily basis would be able to suggest something more sensible. She also gives completely useless names of vendors and software programs to use. Again, she is too specific. Instead of suggesting purchasing a high power word processor, she boldly suggests Microsoft Word 5.5. Is that even for SALE now? Because of this, her text dates dramatically. Perhaps she is writing to an older, less computer literate crowd, but there's no excuse for these kind of mistakes! If Ms. Nash-Price had the lack of knowledge she claims in her book, maybe she should have skipped that chapter alltogether, or at best, passed it along to someone who could write meaningfully on the subject.
This book, although it was written in 96-97, mentions NOTHING about the internet and its valuable uses. The book does go into some detail about self promotion, but it doesn't really go far enough, leaving the reader asking more questions.
Finally, it is evident that the author believes full well in HER techniques, and HER TECHNIQUES ONLY.....if you don't use RED TABS for listings and WHITE TABS for buyers, you can't "WORK EFFECTIVELY"! If you don't like color-coding your life, forget it! These are nice suggestions, but it would be nice if she suggested things that are adaptable to different work styles.
This is not a total waste of reading, but be prepared for VERY trite text and only basic ideas. Still, some are worthwhile and a few, even interesting. Try to get the book used, like I did, however....I wouldn't pay the price for new.
Well laid out.......2000-07-12
I read this book the night I got it and found it very well laid out and easy to follow. I am just about to start a career in real estate and I would recomend this book to anyone that may be in the process of beginning their career as well.
REAL TIPS!.......2000-04-22
Wonderful book for starters like myself at the real estate profession. True guidness. I read the book in two days, and inmediately I started to use the tips Barbara gives to make an appointment with a FSBO, and it worked every word she said. I encourage to buy this book, is an investment you will never regret!
