Everyone knows what the distinctive curves and lines of Frank Gehry's buildings look like. But where do they come from? Gehry has described drawing as his way of "thinking aloud"; Gehry Draws traces that thinking through 32 major projects (both built and unbuilt) with more than 500 drawings (many of which have never before been published) and more than 400 additional illustrations -- providing a privileged view of the creative practice of a master architect. Horst Bredekamp's introduction relates Gehry's drawing methods to the concept of "disegno," as practiced by Leonardo and Durer -- not only the act of drawing and modeling but also the dynamics of creative thinking -- and shows how Gehry thinks through the curving movements of his hand on paper. Gehry himself describes for Bredekamp his method in several explanatory sketches, and Bredekamp applies this to a study of drawings made for specific Gehry commissions.
Gehry Draws is produced in collaboration with Frank Gehry and his team at Gehry Partners. Project synopses and commentary by Gehry and two of his Partners and Project Designers, Edwin Chan and Craig Webb, guide us through the full range of Gehry production, from the small details of furniture design to such large-scale undertakings as the Disney Concert Hall and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The drawings, illustrations, and text in Gehry Draws definitively place drawing at the heart of Frank Gehry's creative process.

The book is not filled with drawings. It's filled with meaningless doodles. Had I been able to see inside, as I would in a physical bookstore, I would not have bought the book.
Outstanding presentation!.......2005-05-31
As a Gehry fan, I have been rummaging through many books that are written about him and his projects. The problem about that is those architectural books can't simply keep up with his prolific efforts in creating masterpieces at different corners of the world. However, the solution is nigh! Rather than bombarding us with all Gehry's projects, it concentrates mainly on a few projects that meant something to Gehry and his team (built and unbuilt). The book is kept very simple. Pages and pages of "noodle" scribbles done by Gehry on a hotel pad or even on a note paid are complemented by Gehry (when needed)'s comment and also by his team's. At times, the scribbles are understood but at times, the scribbles are verging towards abstract arts. If we are shrugging our shoulder, we should feel for the design team that would need to interpret Gehry's works into a form that is legible for construction purpose. It also confirms what Gehry enthusiasts have known all along, Gehry thrives on conceptual designs and he's a big fan of using long hand to derive his inspiration consciously and subconsciously. You can say that this book is a Gehry thinking aloud book and truthfully, I enjoy every moment flapping through this breath-taking book which is printed on thick quality paper. It is not a mean feat that the book is printed and bound in Slovenia. A definite collectible for a Gehry enthusiast or even an architectural enthusiast. It's not a book to get a finite answer of how a genius thinks but a book that might just inspire us to think outside the square for a change. Here, I dedicate this proverb to all of you: let's not follow the foot steps of the old but seek for what they sought. Highly recommended.

Chapters cover such common maritime painting subjects as hulls, masts and rigging, sails, water, skies, freighters and tugs, docks, gulls, and people, as well as giving a wealth of technical do's and don'ts. Painters who have difficulty capturing the subtle nuances of perspective, composition, and water reflections will find Marine Painter's Guide particularly helpful. 127 black-and-white illustrations, many of which show sketches of complex ship riggings in careful detail, and 11 illustrations in full color round out this "must- have" how-to guide for creating realistic and emotionally moving works of maritime art.
Practical guidance.......2000-02-21
An excellent book for the begginer and most helpful for an intermediate painter. It provides very practical guidance on perspective and composition. The author is a practiced professional artist with the down to earth feel of a person who has thought through how to make his advice relevant. He does not waste words or time explaining overly basic matters but keeps to a firm structure with plenty of examples and illustration. The book can be used as a course for learning marine painting.

Beautiful, stunning photographs.......2000-08-11
Kim Taylor Reece is truly a master of the photographic form. Not just in capturing hula in it's glory, but in photography itself. Beautiful work, perfectly framed, perfectly composed photos. Dance photography is extremely rough stuff - trying to capture a time-, movement-, and space-based art into a static, two-dimensional medium is almost folly, but Kim has an amazing ability to capture the movement and depth of the movement in a way that few photographers can - you'll truly feel that the subjects are, in fact, moving, and that's what dance is all about. I loved going to his gallery on Oahu when I lived there, to poke around at the rather expensive (but worth it) photographs, to speak with Rocky (the beautiful and extremely welcoming woman in so many of these photos), and Kim (who is also extremely nice and more than willing to talk about his artwork). For those who cannot afford a couple hundred dollars per photograph, this book is your best option. It's solidly put together, nice thick serious paper, excellent reproduction of the photos, and it is a wonderful collection of Kim's different styles. The book is beautiful, and the photographs are beautiful. Of course, to truly experience Kim's photos, you must visit his gallery, or at least find a way to see the images in full-size: 8"x10" and greater, but this book does justice to the photography.
Kahiko Imagery.......2000-07-04
As a hula dancer, I appreciated this book of hula kahiko imagery. The art of learning the hula is really underestimated by most people. KTR's photographs captures the graceful movements of the kahiko. Not only that, KTR captures the essence and electricity of the dancing, that one moment when one suddenly feels the hairs on one's neck start to rise. This marvelous work portrays the beauty of kahiko dancing and it is a great treasure. I highly recommend this book to those who appreciate and love the hula and to those who are interested in looking at some quality hula images.

It is a book based on the experience of professionals envolved with the information technology. The articles in the book do not have considerable theoretical information. So I recommend it to people who want to grasp a very, but rather well done, practical use of information technology in the public administration.
Selected this text for my graduate IT in PubAdmin class.......2000-10-20
I teach a graduate class in Information Technology in the Public Sector, in the M.S. in Public Administration program at a major university in southern California. I selected this text for my class because there are so few that cover as much territory in a text appropriate for non-technical majors. This text does a very good job of describing for current and future public managers many of the issues related to implementing and enhancing IT in public agencies and non-profits organizations. While at times, some of the articles lean a bit too much toward statistical research, overall this is an excellent text for a graduate Public Administration course. It covers the political dimensions of IT implementation, strategic planning for IT, cases studies of cities that are leading edge technology adopters, some basics of WWW implications for agencies, and a nice article on GIS. Considering the somewhat high cost, my only big complaint is that I wish it had also discussed in depth IT ethics for public managers, so that I would not have had to make students buy a second text for the class.
