Book Description

The euphoria about the future that followed World War II permeated the outlooks of architects, who, influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright and with ready access to remarkable new construction material and building techniques spawned by the war technologies, faced the intriguing prospect of redesigning the post war world. Initially the futuristic designs were outrageous, and detractors labeled these structures the Googie School of Architecture after a particularly outlandish coffee shop in Los Angeles. Googie would seem far from outlandish today as those once controversial design elements have become commonplace in both commercial and residential architecture. Author Alan Hess traces the evolution of these early post war designs in a lively yet learned essay profusely illustrated with both color and black-and-white photography. Googie:Fifties Coffee Shop Architecture is a nostalgic trip back to the Fifties and a look forward at the architectural future.

5 out of 5 stars The best essay ever written on 'my' era.........2002-06-21

This book, quite simply, changed my life. After picking this little gem up off a bargain rack in an Albuquerque book store in 1987, I soon found myself enraptured with the imagery I had all but forgotten growing up in the late 50s and early 60s. Not a me-too bandwagon chaser of retro themes, I have since become quite a collector of my era's decor, automobiles and publications... even started my own small castings/sculptural studio that has produced and sold a number of designs that have been well-received by the collectors who know my work.

I moved to Los Angeles in 1989, largely motivated by what I read in this book, and my obsession in finding the remaining treasures Hess listed. I was ecstatic to find my then-new digs 2 blocks away from the hallowed glass walls of Chips Coffee Shop in Hawthorne, CA! And thankfully it is still intact as of this writing (June 2002). May Googie live forever! And now, the search is on for another copy of the book, as I lost mine years ago. Nothing could please me more than to have the new copy signed by the author himself.

5 out of 5 stars Formica in Context.......1999-03-22

Alan Hess has produced a significant analysis of 50s architecture and design. The title suggests that Hess' focus lies in coffee shop architecture; however, the book is in fact much more diverse. Social trends in post-war Los Angeles, such as automobile and housing design, do much to provide context for Hess' assertions and observations. This is the true value of Hess' work. He does not provide a simple nostalgic or anecdotal look at the overly-regurgitated 50s; rather, he seeks to provide a thoughtful analysis of an indigenous American architectural style. Ultimately, Hess seeks to defend a style that remains either maligned by proponents of "higher" architechtural forms, or reduced to simple nostalgia and trivialization. Hess succeeds admirably in this pursuit. This book is recommended for all who require a more thoughtful and contextual analysis of American popular culture, history, and design.

This is a terrific little book, clearly and concisely written. What I particularly liked was the descriptions of the various paint brushes, pictorial examples of the brush strokes and effects they can produce, when you would use them, and a recommended starter set. A very thorough table of contents: Introduction, Oil Painting Brushes, Care and Cleaning of Brushes, Palette and Painting Knives, Other Tools Used for Paint Application and Manipulation, Oil Paints, Oils and Mediums, Waxes, Thinners/Solvents, Varnishes, Hazards, Surfaces, Paletter, Drawing Materials, Easels, Miscellaneous Equipment, Picture Cleaning and Cleaners, Closing Thoughts.

        Book Description

The extraordinary history of National Geographic photography spare more than a hundred years and tens of thousands of unforgettable pictures, a history never before fully presented. Since January 1896, when the subtitle "An Illustrated Monthly" was first added to the magazine's masthead, the Geographic has maintained a tradition of photojournalistic excellence that continues to set new standards, both artistic and technical. With the publication of startlingly unique photographs from great explorations sponsored by the Society, such at Robert Peary's turn-of-the-century Arctic expeditions. Hiram Bingham's discovery of Machu Picchu, early panoramas of the American West by William Henry Jackson, Joseph Rock's rare scenes of inner China in the 1920s, the first bird's-eye views from stratospheric balloons, and never-before-seen images from the earliest voyages beneath the sea, the National Geographic has been at the forefront of presenting the world in all its magnificent variety.

Now, on the brink of the 21st century, six authors in the field of photography -- respected curators, award-winning writers, distinguished university professors -- have been asked to discuss what they regard as the significant accomplishments of National Geographic and place them within the greater context of the history of photography. Era by era, these experts offer invaluable analysis and fascinating commentary on the pivotal role played by the Geographic in the development of this very special kind of photojournalism. To make their points, these experts have assembled a wonderfully varied representation of great photographs from the Society archives -- many previously unpublished -- and they further highlight important historical developments in special portfolios devoted to the milestones et each period: from the magazine's first color photographs in 1910 to the first color underwater pictures in 1927 to the cutting-edge technologies of today and the issues they present, and more.

For generations, National Geographic's commitment to a groundbreaking blend of stunning, innovative photography and informative, engaging text has consistently delivered the irresistible attractions of this astonishing world into the eager imagination of armchair travelers everywhere.

One of my favorite things about National Geographic has always been the photos and this book is no exception. It is filled with a beautiful photos that span many years and great changes and advancements in photography. I devoured this book, photos only, in an evening at the local bookshop. When I am looking for a relaxing evening I can think of nothing better than to have a National Geographic magazine or collection of photos to pour over.

        Book Description

The discovery of thousands of empty abalone shells and two murdered divers sends Lieutenant John Marquez's poaching investigation in a new and very risky direction. Former DEA agent and now head of a special operations unit of the California Department of Fish and Game, Marquez learns he himself has been targeted as the next victim. Stalking him is Kline, a vicious drug smuggler turned abalone poacher who has a vendetta against Marquez. John Marquez is supposed to protect wildlife, not solve murders, but the only way he can break the multi-million-dollar abalone-smuggling ring, as well as save his own life, is to find and stop Kline. A fast-paced crime novel set along the majestic Northern California coastline, Shell Games introduces a tough, complex, and appealing hero and a masterful new series.

4 out of 5 stars Relevant and engaging...a great first work.......2005-08-25

As a diver, NorCal native and committed conservationist, I was captivated from the start by this potent, believable tale. Russell's characters are completely real, coping with difficult work, complicated families, career decisions--hey, a lot like the rest of us! His eye for subtle details and capacity to project the plight of the characters onto the canvas of California's fragile resources make the story at once relevant and engaging. This is a promising first effort, and I can't wait to devour the next in the series.

        2 out of 5 stars Only okay........2005-04-10

With the story set in my own San Francisco Bay Area, I very much enjoyed the locations and appreciate manner in which he presented the problems of the Dept. of Fish and Game. I would never have guessed abalone smuggling could be more profitable than drugs. However, even with all the bodies and climatic encounter with Kline, I never felt the suspense of this book or a real involvement with the characters. All the bits were there-plot, dialogue, setting--but, somehow, I just did not have a visceral connection to the story.

4 out of 5 stars "Realistic, tense crime/mystery".......2004-09-02

This first-time novel is crime/mystery involving a former DEA agent and special operations unit of Fish & Game Department in California. Gritty, realistic crime drama set along the northern California coastline. As tense as some of the scenes get, it's difficult to believe this is Russell's first novel.

        4 out of 5 stars Mystery, and a novel.......2004-04-08

I liked it not just as a suspense/crime novel, but also as a "Novel Novel". Solid character with believable interior life and family problems (but not some bizarre Neurotic Impediment or cutesy Attribute), nice observations, interesting setting, and not much bloated detail, which sometimes infects novels by first time authors. (I've seen too many sentences like "She gingerly withdrew a pale pink facial tissue from the box imprinted with a pattern of violets and daisies." So for whom did the detail matter?) The hero's professional and personal relationships are not chummy, but there's an arms-length respect that rings true to the rest of his character.

I also appreciate that the chief villain is basically bad but believable, a hardened professional criminal and not a "psychopath" or serial killer; far too many mysteries, even by experienced and talented writers, fall back on that to excuse a lack of interior character development. (Maybe they should look at Simenon's crime novels, or maybe Elmore Leonard's.)

Nice job all around. I'll be looking for his next novel.

          Book Description

In The Fish Kisser, a megalomaniac becomes determined to exact revenge on the Western world through a devious plot of global cyber-warfare. He enlists his own agents to track down and kidnap the experts and educated elite that can help him accomplish the unthinkable. With a series of staged deaths and disappearances, he sets his plan in motion. When the hired henchmen target Roger LeClarc, an English computer expert with a dark secret of his own, the hunters become the hunted. English detective David Bliss, who chased and was chased around the English countryside in Missing: Presumed Dead, teams up with Dutch detective Yolanda Pieters to solve this improbable affair. Fighting internal politics, stumbling upon government cover-ups, and even battling Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard, together they chase a trail of blood, intrigue, and romance across Europe to Iraq in a desperate search for the kidnapped specialists. Fans of the David Bliss character will not be disappointed as James Hawkins turns the action up several notches.

2 out of 5 stars It could have been better.......2003-07-23

What to say? The plot could work, but there are too many side plots. What on earth is Trudy doing in there? I suppose showing us what a horrible guy LeClarc is, but she doesn't really do much for the plot in my opinion. In both this and "Missing Presumed Dead," by Hawkins, there are too many internal maunderings/ruminations going on that are nearly impossible to distinguish from the conversations that they interrupt.

But worst, for me, is the absolute abuse of the English language that appears in both books by Mr. Hawkins. Missed capitalization (not capitalizing sentences that are supposed to have been written in all caps), missed lower case (leaving a sentence in all caps that should have been in lower case), poor spelling (train fair, for the money that one uses to pay for the train), misapplied apostrophes, and just plain bad English! And this, in a book in which several times journalists were criticized for their use of the language.

Sorry, but for me that detracts from a book, and it was detracting enough to keep me from enjoying the book.

4 out of 5 stars Heeeeeeere, fishy fishy fishy. Nice fishy..........2003-03-21

To start with, this is a really strange comic book. It is about the adventures of Inspector Gill. He is a fish. He is a policeman in a world full of fish. Fish fish fish fish fish. He is a fish with a yen for booze and a pair of legs, which none of the other fish understand, since they have no idea what legs ARE. ('"Ankles", my lord?' 'Skip it.') Furthermore, this underwater world is filled to the brim with things that should not even be able to exist in an underwater world. Fish smoke cigars, drink beer, eat soup, light candles, and do all manner of other things that should be impossible. Gill seems to be the only person who realizes this. ('If we're underwater, how come the beer stays IN the mug?')
All the wierdness aside, however, this is a real great read. The underwateriness of it all is depicted perfectly - for instance, whenever a character moves through the water, they leave a little 'swish' of current instead of a speed line; and any loud outburst or wild burst of motion is sure to result in a large amount of little bubbles. The characters are interesting and engaging - Gill himself, who remains sympathetic despite his crankiness and drunken buffoonery, Oscar the Octopus, a mysterious little guy who follows people around and warns them about things in a blue-collar accent, Hook, the villain, along with his servant, Line, and his strange little pet, Sinker (who communicates through one word: 'Bah!'), Blophish the long-suffering butler and many others. The constant scheming and changing of alliances, the snappy verbiage, and Gill's obsession with the mysterious drug in the title all make for a pretty cool little plot, and make 'Hairballs' a very worthwhile addition to your collection.
The one thing that I didn't like, however, was that I could not figure out whether this was the BEGINNING of a saga or something in the middle of it. If it's the former, where can I find the subsequent volumes, and if it's the latter, where can I find the beginning? It's all very annoying. Oh, well.

                            Book Description

Bill Streever, author of Bringing Back the Wetlands and numerous technical articles about wetland restoration and creation, worked for two years to bring together this collection of papers. Authors ranging from private landowners to government managers to scientists present regional overviews, case studies, and discussions of various issues. Regional overviews cover areas as small as the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands to areas as large as Australia and Africa. Case studies range from relatively small projects, such as rehabilitation of damage caused by wheel ruts in the high arctic, to much larger projects, such as attempts to rehabilitate thousands of hectares of Northern Territory wetlands in Australia. Seedbank ecology, economics, remote sensing, community involvement, the role of the wetland consulting industry, and other issues are discussed. In an effort to synthesize information from around the world, Joy Zedler presents a model that allows comparison of projects and may lead to better predictability of project outcomes. In An International Perspective on Wetland Rehabilitation, authors describe planting, engineered structures, prescribed flooding, excavation, and other rehabilitation methods, from Israel to New Zealand to the Netherlands and elsewhere. For the first time, one volume offers an impression of the magnitude and diversity of the field of wetland rehabilitation around the globe.
