Book Description
"[S]ociety so often allows masterpieces of architecture...to be destroyed or altered as though real estate ownership supersedes any other value system....The best railroad stations were conceived in the dreams of architects and civil engineers, and then brought to life by talented craftspeople....This guidebook is a tribute not only to those who built these stations, but also the railroaders who worked within the depots and on the platforms...." — Janet Greenstein Potter
Bustling nerve centers of a dynamic young society on the move, grand last farewells and first welcomes for millions of weary travelers, enduring monuments to the birth of the world's first truly modern nation, railroad stations played a central role in the shaping of the United States and its unique culture. Now, in this, the definitive guide to America's great railroad stations, writer and architectural historian Janet Greenstein Potter tells the stories of more than 700 of these masterpieces.
An excellent resource for on-site and armchair travelers alike, this lavishly illustrated guide provides a generous mix of historical and practical information. Potter provides a detailed biographical profile of each station, covering the year of construction, name of original railroad, designer, style, and materials. Focusing on buildings that are still standing, she discusses depots that have been restored as well as those on the verge of distinction, explains what the station is used for today, and describes its current condition from a preservation/restoration standpoint. And, with the help of more than 500 beautiful archival photographs and detailed drawings, she helps you to gain a fuller understanding of what these structures were like in their heyday.
For quick, easy reference, the book has been organized by region. Stations in all 50 of the United States are covered, and the street addresses of each building have been provided.
Offering an unparalleled opportunity to experience the grandeur and vitality of a bygone era, Great American Railroad Stations is an indispensable resource for travelers, architects and design professionals, preservationists, and train and transportation enthusiasts.

A must have supplement for any railfan library........1997-03-11
Complete with brief, but detailed history and current uses for stations throughout the country, this tome is a must for any railfan to enjoys seeking out the train depots in cities along the path of his vacation route. Though by no means comprehensive (about 10 to 12 depots are listed for most states; Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio each have dozens, many of which are in excellent condition.), the book is nevertheless tremendously useful. In addition, one should consider Halberstadt & Halberstadt's "The American Train Depot & Roundhouse" and Ward's "Southern Railway Depots, Vol. 1 & 2. The out of print Alexander's "Down At The Depot" should be sought out as well

almost a great tool.......2007-08-01
The text, as the previous reviewer writes, is excellent. I love the preliminary chapters for content and ability to communicate various concepts of fashion thinking. However, in the tutorials there are enough missing or unclear steps to frustrate someone attempting to learn new software. It would be helpful if the reader/user has previous familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in order to work past these issues. Needless to say, the text components that integrate Illustrator and Photoshop tools are quite helpful and promote realistic ways to use the software applications together. I am pleased with the text, but do look forward to a second edition.
Fab!!! Worth the money.......2006-08-11
Very insightful, very useful, easy to understand. Totally worth the money.

stands on the shoulders of other newspaper strip collections.......2007-02-07
not a longwinded anecdote about an age by someone who wasnt a part of it but the strips, sundays and dalies, from the turn of the century heavy into the forties with a quick touch of fifties to top it off. has the prestige and backing of the smithsonian, so the selection is incredible, complete storylines are presented, color, large format, things youve never seen before and will never see again. thimble theatre, krazy kat, flash gordon, ally oop, mutt and jeff, king aroo, dasheil hammet, rube goldberg, walt disney, dick tracy, little orphan annie, white boy, li'l abner, terry and the pirates, winsor mckay including little nemo sundays, a large number of teens and twenties strips i cant name, a large number of thirties and forties strips i cannot name, i am in awe of this book. i am a comic maker and reader and this book is absolutely flooring.
The First Book of Newspaper Comics.......2007-01-18
I studied this book like a Bible when I was a kid, lying on the floor all weekend. I started on the easy reads like Allie Oop and Buster Brown, then slowly got drawn-in to strange ones like Krazy Kat. I was surprised by the great narratives in strips I'd only seen in tired forms, like Popeye and Mickey Mouse. All the way into college I was still making new discoveries, eventually coming all the way back to love the pure optimism of Buster Brown. Astounding examples of art are all through this book; It's amazing.
A truly excellent compilation.......2006-06-15
This is a beautifully packaged collection of some of the very best comic-strip art from the first half of the 20th century (and a little more). The reproduction is very good, the introductory material is useful and informative and the selection of strips is first rate.
In particular, having collected several of these strips in other formats over the years (e.g. "Little Nemo", "Polly and Her Pals" and "Krazy Kat"), I can say that they've selected many of my personal favorites for inclusion here.
As I write this, this book is basically in "remainder" status meaning that it is available brand new for very cheap, but has gone out of print in hardcover - pick it up while you can!
Histarical Clever Great Wish I had 10 copies.......2002-07-06
One day I had to go to the library to get a book from my 7th grade reading list and I saw this huge book of comics and I just had to take it out. I read it probably 100 times .It became my favorite book.My favorite comics were Popeye, Gasoline Alley, The Smythes, and Krazy Kat. I love this book and you will to. So my advice to you is if you love comics you will love this book!
An Excellent Look at the History of Comic Strips.......2002-07-05
I've always been a huge comic strip fan going back to the days when my dad was the press foreman and he let me (as a little kid) watch the "Sunday Funnies" get printed. Awesome! Fast forward to my high school years. I was bored and killing study hall time in the library when I stumbled upon this book.
The book is broken down by period going back to the first comic strips and working their way up to the early 70's. There's some text where the authors write to explain the different styles or comment on various strips but the real gem here are all of the comic strip samples in this book. Some strips (like Mickey Mouse) get many pages as they tell a whole story. Others don't get but a single sample strip, especially strips after the 1950's.
I love this book and will break it out from time-to-time just to read all of the classic strips like "Yellow Kid", "Buster Brown", "Katzenjammer Kids", "Mutt and Jeff", "Little Nemo in Slumberland", "Thimble Theater", "Mickey Mouse", "Krazy Kat", and many, many more.
It's a shame this book hasn't been re-published with new sections to include modern classics but oh well. If you can find it, it's well worth having!

My Introduction to the classic strips.......2002-05-29
The "Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics" is a giant, heavy hardcover book that is just bursting with great comic strips. We bought this as a present for my Granddad in 1984, but you can be sure that I got far more use out of it than he did. Every visit to their house had me pouring over these old comics.
Comic strips of the golden age where very different from the tiny, three panel strips we have today. Huge, multi-page full-color adventures were the norm. "Little Nemo in Slumberland" is a burst of eye-candy. Windsor McCay had imagination and talent. "Thimble Theater Staring Popeye" was another favorite of mine. E.C. Segar's Sailor is very different, and much improved, from the spinach-eather we have now.
Other great strips in here are "The Yellow Kid," "Gasoline Alley," "Barney Google," "Moon Mullins," "Buster Brown" and the list goes on. This book is a treasure.
An Indispensable Wonder.......2000-10-25
Growing up in the 60s & 70s, I wasn't much enamored of comic strips appearing in the newspaper with a scant few exceptions. Newspaper comics were awfully stale if not comatose at the time; they smell even worse now. In light of this reality, thank God I found this book 20 years ago. To me, this mammoth oversized anthology of color and b/w strips (mostly vintage 1895-1950) was and is an education, a revelation and a door to a separate reality. Who knew that such fully realized, utterly compelling and unique works of art were once commonplace features in our daily and Sunday newspapers? Compiler Bill Blackbeard provides minimal but insightful commentary, which only underscores his good taste as the majority of SMITHSONIAN is devoted to the actual comics themselves. Wherever possible, he provides continuities of strips to give the reader not only a fuller flavor of the individual storylines and the era they appeared in, but each strip's particular dynamic with its audience. What's also impressive is the sheer number of titles sampled. Among the weightier excerpts are Popeye, Moon Mullins, Wash Tubbs/Capt. Easy, Barney Google, Polly and her Pals, Krazy Kat...but many of the lightly-skimmed properties are just as good. Set aside their enormous entertainment value and what you may find most impressive is how starkly individual each strip creator is; what ends up on the page is the sum total of one man's creative & emotional being, distorted through a prism of fantasy or slapstick or melodrama. Your net gain as reader: 336 pages of the kind of joyous, crazy, all-elbows-and-graceful-despite-it art that can only emerge from forms that the Arbiters of Taste don't take very seriously. Splendid as this book is the first time 'round, it continues to enrich you, always revealing more with every subsequent re-reading. Out of print for a while but readily available through the online auction services; I also hear it's being reissued soon. By the way, the other mandatory strip anthologies are the 'sequel' to this one (COMIC STRIP CENTURY), an important predecessor (Robinson's THE COMICS) and the entire run of Rick Marschall's NEMO magazine; happily, there is next to no duplication of strips reprinted between all of them (apparently the archivist's code of honor). If this book floors you like it did me, seek them out and flabbergast further.

Expert money-making advice from the nation's leading fixer-upper guru
"Excellent book on the fixer strategy."--John T. Reed, bestselling real estate author
"Filled with practical examples of how to profit from rundown fixer-upper properties."--Robert J. Bruss, syndicated real estate columnist
Nobody wants to buy an ugly, decrepit, rundown house--which is exactly why they provide real estate investors with the best bargains! In Investing in Fixer-Uppers, nationally known real estate guru Jay DeCima reveals how investors can add thousands of dollars to the value of an "ugly" house. He discusses how to substitute personal skills for traditional down payments, strategies to profit without waiting for appreciation, and dozens of other value-adding tips.
Customer Reviews:
I can't agree.......2007-08-02
I can't agree with those who criticize this book for being like all other real estate investment books. This book is a breath of fresh air from many other real estate books! The author actually offers practical advice from his experience, and its written in a readable and humorous manner.
In particular, the author's description of the Haywood Houses purchase on pagers 16 to 25 is a good example that addresses many of the issues that new (and experienced) investors face, such as:
1.) Where do you find your investment houses? Jay found his in the newspaper. I found my first investment property in the newspaper also. It was a great fix-up bargain at $85,000 in 2002, and is a great rental property now, bringing in over $200/month;
2.) What do you do when you find a good property? Jay says "act quickly" when you find a property in neglect. Jay says houses in neglect are worth big bucks for us do-it-yourself fix-up investors. Jay's list of what constitutes an ugly property, including "unsightly yards, no painting done for years, broken down fences, unsupervised dogs & cats." This list should be taped on our walls to constantly remind investors what we are looking for;
3.) Fixing people problems. The property was overrun by scary looking people with tattoos who drank beer and worked on junk cars. The owner wanted out. Jay fixed the sort-term people problem in exchange for receiving valuable long-term benefits.
This is a useful book that I keep handy.
Terry Sprouse - author of the forthcoming book, "Fix 'em Up, Rent 'em Out: How to Start Your Own House Fix-up and Rental Business in Your Spare Time."
This book is worth $46,000.00. Here's what it did for me:.......2007-03-29
I have read this book 5 times now, and am putting his strategies to good use. Using Jay's strategies, I just fixed up an older house in my neighborhood. With 3 month's part time work, (I also teach 3rd grade) I now have 28k in equity, and 209.00 per month positive cashflow. The house was even owner financed, 2% down, and deferred payments too! (Jay's strategies). Next week, I will close on a second rental property for $46,500, and it appraises for $65,000. Some folks say Jay is too folksy, but he can be as folksy as he wants to be if his strategies get me $46,000 in equity in less than 6 months.
Good basic primer for beginners.......2006-11-22
I found this book to be a good primer for new real estate investors. Seasoned pros could find a nugget or two as well. More than anything else, DeCima's writing style, folksy as it is, is just fun to read. A good addition to your real estate library.
How much would you pay for a good tip?.......2006-01-16
For the most part I find book reveiws helpful. But I wonder about those by who expect to get the whole nine and a half yards for $12.98. If I can get one tip that may help me make thounsands $$ (and it has) for the price of a Subway lunch, then I'm ordering up. A guide to Investing in Fixer-Uppers, $12.98; Investing in yourself, priceless.
better than the rest........2006-01-12
Best RE book I've read. Read over 30 so far. This guy doesn't blow smoke up your butt like the other RE gurus.

Good Book.......2007-03-20
I bought the book back in September of 2006 and have just started reviewing it. I did find an error as mentioned on page 18 in another review by another reader. The Assessed value formula is backwards and you have to reverse the numerator and denominator variables P & A to get the formula to work. Also the revised assessment example on page 20 has some errors also. The formula (1+i)^y should calculate the revised assessment column on page 20 using the 1.5% average increase in assessed value. When you plug in values with y = 1 as the power the values come out. When you use 2-3 years for y, you get a higher value that does not agree with the examples for Laurel St; Haynes St; Green and Hayward Lane respectively. So far this is the major errors I have found but will write back when I see some more. I do agree the classifications of the related formulas are great to the subject matter being expounded on. However I would also like to see more worked out examples for the formulas as this would also serve as a self check for errors. Some of the simpler formulas have no worked out examples and for some this is needed to lock in the theory.

Handy reference guide.......2007-01-04
I ordered this book for my business library and and happy with it, athough it does have some errors in it. However, the material is informative enough to undersatnd, which allows me to perform the calculations in it.
For Real estate investor pros.......2006-03-12
Michael c. Thomsett's REAL ESTATE INVESTOR'S POCKET CALCULATOR: SIMPLE WAYS TO COMPUTER CASHFLOW, VALUE, RETURN, AND OTHER KEY FINANCIAL MEASUREMENTS finally places in the investor's hands the same tools real estate agents use to calculate yield, values, taxable income and operating expenses. All different types of value are revealed in chapters which cover everything from acceleration techniques and methods for reducing interest to ways of maximizing investment returns. Worksheets, tables and charts provide clarity and all the formulas needed to succeed. Very highly recommended as an essential, basic pick any real estate investor should keep at hand.
invalid formulas.......2006-01-10
Correct me if I am wrong but looking at the definitions for assessment ratios they are defined as appraised price (P) * assessment ratio (R) = assessed value (A) so restating this as P * R = A then R = A / P which is not consistent with the book. The book states that R = P / A which is invalid. If you take the example of asked price which for this example lets say it is the appraised price of $107,500 and assessed value of A = 90000. If you use the formula of R = A / P then the ratio is 83.7% if you run the numbers defined in the book formula you get 1.194444444444. Other than that, the book has been very good at figuring the value of a given property. This also applies to the Assessment ratio adjusted.
Here is the reference I found for defining the assessment ratio http://co.laplata.co.us/asrinfo.htm

Customer Reviews:
Actually, the analysis of stocks and bonds is the key to this book.......2005-08-09
Although I am relatively new real estate investor, I also have 15 years experience as a real estate attorney and am a real estate broker. I have read many, many books on real estate investments, and this is another one I have decided to buy to keep, rather than merely check out from the library for one reading.
Actually, the reason for this decision is that the first 100 pages or so, complained about by other reviewers on Amazon, is so well written and important.
We are all bombarded daily by the paid advertisements of brokerage houses, and by the "experts" on TV and in the written media, all of whom toe the party line that stocks are the sure way to build wealth, and never talk about about the much, much greater benefits of real estate investing. (I'm sure that you can guess why).
I have asked my wife that if anything ever happens to me and she needs to begin making investment decisions for herself and our young daughter without my help, she make this one of the handful of books she uses for guidance.
I am writing this review in case it might also help others to see the truth Eldred reveals about the stock market "industry" and plot their own financial success.
Don't waste your money.......2005-02-17
Don't waste your money on this book. As I am about to type up a review for this book I notice an earlier comment written by David Paige which sum up my view in a more nicely put way.
I bought this book because I wish to learn about VALUE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE as the title suggested. NOT to listen to one man personal rant and rave on how great investment in real estate is vs stocks. There are 268 pages excl footnotes etc.. and the first 100 pages is simply about property is good and stock is evil.
And is plain stupid to imply Buffet is more successful investors than Soros given that these are two great investors in their own right. Quoting the author "Buffet's net worth trumps that of soros at least 10 fold.... (page 36, 5 lines). I can easily twist this round by saying Soros has a track record of 28.6% compounded annual rate of return (1969-2002) vs Buffet's "only" 23.5% (1956-2002). It is meaningless, I die happy if my investment skill is fraction of what both these men has achieve.
At the beginning of this email, I suggested you not to waste your hard earn $$ on this book and I stand by my words. Please drop me an email and I will be happy to give you my copy for free. My email is pakawat2003@yahoo.co.uk (be prepare to include SAE, I live in Taiwan)
Buffett is spelt with two ts.......2004-10-16
Dr Eldred obviously knows real estate. But his references to Warren "Buffet" annoyed me. It's one of those attention-to-detail things, I guess. He makes the same mistake in his "Make Money with Fixer Uppers and Renovations". Apart from that, both books are worth reading
Get A Clue.......2003-03-06
First of all, I have been in the investment business for years. I recommend stocks, mutual funds, bonds, treasuries, commodities, REIT's, etc. Many of the reviewers here don't have a clue what they are talking about. The stock market is not the only way to invest. In fact, given current market valuations and investor sentiment (historically high sentiment now-2003) future stock market returns will come nowhere close to what we've seen over the past 2 decades. Personally, I think that at least to 2010 we will be lucky to get market returns of 5% annually - very lucky!! The reason making money in real estate is so attractive now is that many rentals offer positive cash flow immediately (unless you live in most areas of CA, Boston, D.C, etc). Also, the KEY to making money in real estate is LEVERAGE. Example: You buy a $100k property that appreciates at 3% year for the next 5 years. You put down 20% ($20k). Your 30 yr fixed mortgage payments are $475 month ($80k at 6%). You rent the unit for $800 month ($9600). Expenses are $100 month. Taxes are $75 month. So, in Year 5 your property is now worth $116k. Your mortgage balance is $75k. You have equity of ($116-$75 = $41k). All this on a $20k cash investment. In the meantime, you've NETTED $150 month X 60 months = $9000 total. You've really turned $20,000 into $50,000 in 5 years (20.1% CAGR). This doesn't include annual rent increases OR tax deductions (both of which would equal thousands of dollars). The key is you get leveraged appreciation WITHOUT MARGIN CALLS. Unless you are Warren Buffett, forget about making money in the stock market now or EVER. Real estate is not for everyone though. If you are serious about real estate this book is a great read.
Somewhat useful.......2003-02-23
This book can be quite frustrating to read, for the first 100 pages or so. Basically, it paints a very negative portrait of stocks, and how it will be doomsday galore in about 30 years for stock investors, since the rate of elderly people seeking to cash their stocks out will increase, causing the stock market to blow to you know what. Then the author says that because of this, you need to start investing in real estate, where the risks are much lower, and the returns are much higher. But this is so silly, because if the stock market crashes, and millions upon millions of people holding stocks are finding themselves in the poor house, then guess where that will leave real estate owners? With lot's of paper money that won't be worth a darn thing anyways! And this is assuming that real estate owners won't be effected by a severe economic depression, but this is contradictory to what the author admits in his logic. He stated that deflation caused by economic depression will be hurtful for real estate owners, and traditionally, that many go belly-up when this happens, as it did in 1929. So how the heck can it be advantageous to hold real estate instead of stocks when the market goes kaplunk in 30 or so years (which he so ingeniously *sarcasm, cough, sarcasm*) predicts?
Truly, the author should have just sticked to talking about how real estate can be a wise investment, which it most certainly can be, and leave the rest of his opinions for smarter people to handle. There was absolutely no need to go off on a tangent discrediting stocks like he did. He made some good points, but then he also unknowingly contradicted himself at times, like I pointed out above. Furthermore, he used the DJIA to promote how the market has only appreciated at a dismal rate, but he should truly learn how the DJIA is computed before making such bold assumptions. Any smart investor knows that the DJIA is not a very good indicator of how well the economy is doing, and it was a be-all/end-all in his efforts to convince you on why stocks are so bad to hold.
Anyways, he does give some good advice on real estate. He just should have stuck with it, and cut out about half of the book in which he blew off on a tangent.

How to make a killing on a chump-change investment........2007-05-30
My pen name is Big Al. I am also the writer of this book. When you self - publish a book if you don't review and promote it, then no one will. Which is what I am doing now. I have read dozens of investment books and they all ignore the almost unknown world of small-cap and micro-cap investing. Not to mention my specialty of penny mining stock investing. And yet this is precisely the world where the small investor of limited means can make a killing. Once you make your first killing in my world you will be in it for life. Just like I am. Let me introduce you to my world. A world where you can make a killing on a chump-change investment.
The most exciting thing about my world is that anyone can afford to enter it. You can become a player for an investment as low as $500.
A "must read" for any investor!.......2007-04-12
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced investor this book is a must read. The stock market can be very complicated, but Fred's forty years of knowledge and experience gives you the insight needed to invest correctly and make big returns on your money. The book is easy to read, a mixture of intellgent writing with humorus anecdotes. I highly recommend this book!

Product Description
Real estate investing is a venture of diligence and foresight, and investors with a good sense of where property rents and values are headed can be very successful. Within this context, the book focuses on the foresight aspect of the real estate market, as it relates to a property's prospects for value gains. In particular, it first uncovers broader circumstances that create opportunities for substantial profits in real estate, and identifies four general categories of properties with significant profit potential. Subsequently, the book examines how such circumstances can be created in the case of residential, office, and retail real estate. Finally, the book describes specific sub-categories of properties with significant profit potential and examines the implications of the material presented in structuring high-return portfolios. The book should be of great interest to property owners, investors, and real estate professionals residing in any free economy around the globe.

author review.......1999-12-28
Eventhough this book was published in 1973 and has been out of print for many years, I am still surprised occasionally when someone runs across a copy of it. It presents a "street smart" approach to real estate analysis for investment and finance purposes.I have used this approach in my own business successfully in numerous states in the years since the book was published. I have found that even with the amount of data avalilable in todays market that many times the data is wrong having been gathered from brokersor others with a vested interest or from unreliable word of mouth sources. This technique still works. If you come across a copy of the book-I hope you find it profitable. Gordon J. Anderson 12/27/99.
