Amazon.com
When he's not on assignment, the indefatigable Elliott Erwitt often takes his camera and heads for a museum, where, he says, finding interesting and amusing subjects to photograph is "like shooting fish in a barrel." He proves his point with this wide-ranging collection of images from the last 45 years that look at lookers from Cambodia and Japan to New York and Paris. There are countless characteristically mischievous moments here: a middle-aged couple pores over the Clouet painting of two topless women--one the king's mistress preparing for her bath and the other her sister, tweaking her nipple. In a snapshot on the facing page, a soldier fondles the bronze breast of a goddess in an Italian piazza. In the Prado gallery, where the clothed and the nude Majas of Goya are installed side by side, the former is studied by a lone female and the latter obscured by a crowd of male admirers. There are multiple shots of the marmoreal buttocks of countless shapely sculptures flanked by passersby whose glances speak volumes about the hallowed halls of high art.
But there are always other, more somber moments in any Erwitt collection. Here, such pictures include a shot of the bleak railway tracks that led inexorably through the gates of Auschwitz and the bins there of thousands of pairs of eyeglasses that were never worn again. In Cambodia, Erwitt finds quiet beauty in the jungle-bound ruins of the temple of Angkor Wat, but he also visits the present, in the form of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh, where photographs of thousands of slaughtered Cambodian citizens pack the walls, from floor to ceiling.
As always, Erwitt's ultimate subject is the human condition, captured with gentleness, intelligence, and compassion, this time in a context that narrows his scope a bit, but not much. --Peggy Moorman

The Museum As Zoo.......2000-03-02
The photographer Garry Winogrand took numerous zoo photographs, and made us wonder who were the more curious, the animals or the spectators. Elliott Erwitt takes the same approach with the museums of the world. This book is a brilliant collection of gallery visitors who are not only looking at works of art, but seemingly are interacting with them. The gentleman stares at a statue, and the statue stares back. A youth places his finger on the outstretched digit of a sculpture, and we are reminded of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. A centurion with a dead or dying man in his arms glares at a spectator as if to say, "Go away, this is none of your business." Viewers and guards often seem to resemble the portraits that are adjacent to them.
Erwitt's sense of humor is wonderful. We see people staring attentively at empty picture frames; a man takes a video, not of a painting, but of the small descriptive plaque next to the painting. But the best part is that these are pictures of quality with excellent composition and lighting. What impresses me most is that Erwitt took many of these outstanding shots surreptitiously, mindful that many museums forbid photography. I am also duly impressed by the number of galleries that the author has managed to see in his lifetime; he has even visited the sculptures in the Oakland, California mudflats.
If you enjoy good photography that possesses a sense of humor, then this is a must for your collection. You might also try his book "Between The Sexes."

Book Description
For the discriminating walker with a taste for the unusual, Serendipitous Outings near New York City includes strolls in New Jersey, Long Island, the Hudson River Valley, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania as well as a special section for birders. These walks meander through woodland gorges; among wildflowers; into deserted villages; along lakes, rivers, and the ocean; and to a historic cemetery.
Selected outings are for those with specific interests: There are mushroom forays, walks among fragrant herbs (especially, but not only, for the blind and handicapped), total fitness trails, vineyard and apple-picking walks, and a walk amid an amazing sculpturescape. Each entry includes the authors' recommended time for a visit (it's not always spring!), directions, and ideas of other outings in the area. All walks are within the abilities of the average family, and some are easier.
For walkers of every description--from experienced hikers to leisure-time strollers--this book is the perfect guide to outdoor adventures close to the City.

Taken the scare out of visiting New York City.......2006-08-10
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (7/06)
Anticipating a trip to the New York City and area, this book certainly has taken the scare out of visiting an incredibly large city. "Serendipitous Outings Near New York City" simplifies the trip and gives the reader an opportunity to visit New York City with ease.
Harrison and Rosenfeld intended this book for all walkers - experienced trail hikers, antique hunters, nature lovers, as well as slow walkers that just love to browse and enjoy conversations with those they meet. The book starts off with the "Deserted" Village in the Allaire State Park of New Jersey. The authors give a brief history, description and when the village is open. They explain that guided tours are available if one so desires, but they also encourage self-guided tours. After the walk, they suggest a trek to the Atlantic Ocean where another small town exists.
This is only one of the many walking trips that the authors suggest. They include an easy to follow map and there is no doubt they have trekked the streets and areas themselves. They say things like "Before leaving Stonecrop, be sure to walk on a small path through the woodland garden: Azaleas, rhododendrons, and other shade-loving plants have been carefully placed to blend harmoniously with this natural habitat. Nearby is a pond surrounded by lilies and groupings of..." How enticing is that! With descriptions like this, one can't help but wander on the path.
I'm looking forward to using this book on my trip to the area. At first I wasn't anticipating visiting some of the areas which include New Jersey, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. However, after perusing this book, the travel plans will have to include these areas.

Better information on the internet..........2003-02-22
Most of this book is a listing of some whale watching companies with litte infomation of real value. Which ones are good? No information about that. But there is information if their boat serves food, which they almost all do. Plus this information is old. No good pictures and no quality information about whales. I was completely disappointed in this suppossed "5 star" book. Don't buy this book -- do searching on line instead.
Ask not for whom the whale migrates...........2002-09-14
Thanks a lot. This book tells all the spots you may find me.
As a Humpback whale and elected leader of our pod I would like to say have a little decency and go stare at your own species for crying out loud. Don't we have enough stress in our lives wondering when the next one of us is going to get a harpoon stuck in his bladder? How would you like it if a bunch of us whales piled into a minivan and followed you and your family around? Gawking at you and your offspring as you stand in line for your happy meals or doing what ever your brutish species does. Doesn't sound like so much fun now does it?
Go fiddle with the banana slugs or mimes, nobody likes them anyway.

Customer Reviews:
Highly accessible prose style for a career primer.......2004-04-05
Now fully updated edition for 2004, The Original New Agent's Guide To Starting & Succeeding In Real Estate is a practical, career-oriented guidebook for those who aspire to a real estate sales profession. Expertly and accessibly written by expert and successful real estate salesman Mark Nash, The Original New Agent's Guide To Starting & Succeeding In Real Estate will teach aspiring realtors everything from how to get started, to marketing their services, to surviving relocation, to getting to know their community, and so much more. A very strongly recommended introduction and reference, The Original New Agent's Guide To Starting & Succeeding In Real Estate combines methodical instructions with a positive tone and highly accessible prose style for a career primer that anyone can learn from.
Down-to-earth, easy -to -understand-and-follow book!.......2003-10-28
There is absolutely no doubt that newly licensed real estate agents are in dire need of career guidance. This book takes the reader from finding a broker with whom to affiliate to understanding the sometimes dizzing array or real estate terminology. It would be a handy little reference for the new agent. Dr. Kenneth W. Edwards, GRI, Book and Video Review Editor, The Real Estate Professional Magazine.
He needs a proof reader.......2003-10-14
I have read many many books in my 40 years, and I have NEVER seen such an EMBARRASSING collection of misspellings and poor punctuation in any book, even those which were self-published. A run through a basic spell checker was obviuosly never done, and author has very poor grammar skills indeed, not knowing the prover use of their vs. there.
Its hard to take someone's advice seriously when their writing skills are so very very bad. I would be embarrassed to release this book.
Just plain awful!.......2003-10-01
I just picked up a copy of this book and after reading the first chapter, have had enough! Although I'm sure it's filled with some helpful tidbits, the gross about of grammatical and spelling errors over-shadows this. This author's credibility is not only based upon the accolades on the back cover, but by the book's format. By no means am I an editor, but this book's editor should have, at the very least, crosschecked the copy with a word processing program.
Never before have I encountered such carelessness and to realize that I purchased a book with grammatical errors, shocks me. Boy, am I sorry I wasted my money.
Look Elsewhere.......2003-08-02
I don't know about you but I have a serious problem trusting the written words of someone who can't even bother taking time to proofread what they write. This book is so filled with grammatical errors, misspellings, and just bad writing that I found it incredibly distracting to read, incredibly disrespectful of the reader, and just plain unprofessional.
The content barely scratched the surface on many issues. There are much better books available from Amazon. Try "21 Things I Wish My Broker Had Told Me" by Frank Cook or "Your First Year in Real Estate: Making the Transition from Total Novice to Successful Professional" by Dirk Zeller.
