READ BEFORE YOU BUY THIS !!!
ok.. so i ordered it thinking i got a great book at a great price... like my typical experiences at amazon.. but I didnt ever see anything denoting the "paperback" as being an unfolded pamphlet ( like an instruction manual quality ) and a bunch of postcards... hopefully i can return it !?!?.... in mint condition of course

I should have read the previous review. We bought this thinking it was a paperback book on Herzog & de Meuron. You can imagine how disappointed we were that it was post cards. Now I have to waste more money sending it back.

The best of many western books on this subject.......2003-02-24

I have been teaching and practicing this artform (Chinese Brush Painting) for about 5 years and have found this among the very best of the available books on the subject. Ms. Frame takes us through the basics, with descriptions of the materials and brushstrokes that one can actually follow and put into practice -all the time keeping true to the tradition. She then takes us beyond the basics with lovely projects incorporating colour along with the ink. I would highly recommend this book along with Ning Yeh's instruction books and videos for anyone seriously interested in learning the techniques of this beautiful artform.

The best I could find.......2004-03-14

This is one of several books on the subject that I bought because I was late on a decorative commission and had to learn how to write hieroglyphs fast. This turned out to be the only book of any value. Using Gardiner's Sign List to organize the symbols into catagories, Fischer first shows a large drawing of the glyph, then shows with a series of sequential sketches how to arrive at the final design. Using his technique, I was able to achieve satisfactory results in a remarkably short time.

Unlike some of the other authors, Fischer does redraw, modify, or try to "reinterpret" the symbols. I compared his hieroglyphs to photographs of tomb and temple walls and found his to be true to the originals.
The 4th edition contains some additional glyphs and information in supplementary references and addenda.
This is a beautifully designed and bound book, worthy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I use this in conjunction with Wilkinson's "Reading Egyptian Art".

Excellent Guide.......2003-12-11

As others have said, this volume is slim and thankfully clear and concise. The glyphs are simplified to make them easier to draw, but still recognizably hieroglyphs (as opposed to cursive forms or hieratic-- and sometimes clearer than Faulkner). There are many larger illustrations that show the glyph in more naturalistic form; these are quite interesting. When the forms varied significantly over time, all versions are shown (i.e., Old Kingdom form, Middle and New Kingdom form(s).) It's very helpful, for writing and reading.

The period from 1955 to 1985 reflects photography's acceptance as an art form, the influence of modernism, and the coalescence of a unique constellation of educational institutions, museums, and technological development in the Boston area that directly influenced artistic options for photography. Minor White's arrival at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965 to run the Center for Creative Photography and the Polaroid Corporation's innovative support of photographic art suggest how developments built upon one another to create a regional critical mass in photography.

The book contains twenty-five color plates, sixty duotones, and essays by A. D. Coleman, Rachel Rosenfield Lafo, Arno Rafael Minkkinen, and Kim Sichel.

Bought the book for a class. Initially thought it was going to be long and dry because it's so big. But, was pleasantly surprised. The book is full of useful and user-friendly information. This one is staying on my shelf.

While this book does contain a lot of invaluable information, I caught myself dozing off several times while reading. It is a good book for use as reference and a wonderful tool for concrete guidance, but I have found other books with same information less "text book" and easier to read.

It's a typical textbook, somewhat dry but a necessity for a class I'm taking. I loved the fact that Amazon was cheaper and faster than going with a textbook provider.

I used the 1994 edition of this book in graduate school and it was an invaluable resource in subsequent research. Although the current edition is much revised, the previous edition still stands the test of time. Reasonably priced for what one receives.

I used the first edition of this book in graduate school in the early 1990s and am using this second edition in current professional research. Both editions are excellent resources for students and practitioners. Recommend highly.

Book Description

The saga of the Yacyreta hydroelectric project on the Argentina-Paraguay border not only illustrates the radical change in the power dynamics of the Latin American Southern Cone region, but also reflects the transformation of development discourse and practice during the last decades. It examines the relationship between the weakened role of the nation-state in decision making and the emergence of nongovernmental organizations and grassroots movements as key development actors. Because the Yacyreta dam is being built in the borderlands of two countries as a binational undertaking, it threatens the boundedness of nation-states precisely where sovereignty is traditionally guarded--the national frontiers. Under these and other global challenges of deterritorialation such as processes of regional integration encouraged by Mercosur (Common Market of the South), popular conflicts have become spatialized, reflecting both the resilience of national imaginings and histories of exclusion and exploitation. This study demystifies populist and romanticized academic constructions of subaltern groups. It shows that the outcomes of popular struggles can be one of accomodation and cooperation and not resistance. Nonetheless, they constitute serious threats to planned development. It challenges current approaches in development that advocate participation, empowerment, and communication.
