The ideal book for the intended audience.......2007-07-21
This books was exactly what I was looking for. I do work on Victorian houses and this book puts everything in perspective. I can now tell what woodwork belongs in what house and not guess anymore. I can explain to customers what they have or had in their house and give a brief history behind their mill work. After reading this book you will be able to act as an authority on restoration work. When giving bids or discussing potential jobs with a client I can speak confidently and sell my services much more effectively. If you work on old houses the knowledge you will gain in this book will set you apart from the average modern day carpenter. The price is small compared to the education you will get from this book. If you love Victorian woodwork as I do, this book is a must have. It would take 20 other carefully selected books and numerous hours of research to arrive at the same depth of understanding of historic mill work as this book gives you in one long afternoon of reading. This author saved me a lot of time and confusion by producing such a book; my personal thanks!
Highly informative reference.......2005-10-17
Reading other reviews, I'm not sure why we have the overall impression that highly specialized references such as this should be bargain basement priced - the costs of writing and producing a book such as this are not inconsiderable, so I feel compelled to defend the author and publisher in that respect.
That being said, I'm perhaps the ideal customer for this book in that my home - former military quarters - was built in 1910 and re-fitted by the military at least twice during its life. Trying to figure out what is original and what is retrofitted is very challenging and this book provides an excellent guide for my purposes.
If you want pure gratification from a text with lots of color pictures you should know this is not a coffee table book, likewise, it is not a catalog. Nevertheless, I think the serious restoration-minded reader will be very satisfied, as I am.
A Little Disappointing.......2005-06-28
Like several other reviewers, I found the book to be overpriced. The book provided neither extensive and in depth narrative history NOR extensive patterns. ...and I don't believe there was one color photograph to be found. Don't buy it until you've had it in your hands.

As you try and make a decision about this book I wanted to give an explanation as the author. I noticed the reviews above and wanted to clarify the purpose of the book. I don't want you to spend $70 dollars on a book that doesn't help.
First, if you are looking for an old millwork catalog, this may not be your book. I wrote this book for architects trying to specify the correct doors, windows and moldings for historic buildings. I wrote this book for homeowners trying to figure out the millwork in their home and the subtle differences that take place during each architectural period. I wrote this book for contractors trying to restore an historic building with the proper details.
1870-1940 is a unique 70 year period in which there are numerous architectural changes that effect the moldings and millwork details of a building.
This book was written to help clarify how historic millwork was produced, who the major players were, how architectual and stylistic differences revealed themselves in the moldings and millwork of the home. I have broken out chapters by topic like windows or doors and then traced the changes in these products from 1870 to 1940. Hopefully, by reading this book you will be able to easily distinguish; a Victorian 5 panel door from an Arts and Crafts 2 panel, understand when colonades were popular and how they change, identify a Queen Anne sash, and recognize Victorian millwork from others.
I hope this helps you get a clear picture of what you are buying.

Over Priced & Better References.......2004-02-09
This book is quite overpriced relative to similar books. Better titles are available from Dover (Universal Millwork Catalog), Lee Valley (Home Interiors of the 1920s), Linden Publishing (Modern Practical Joinery), Fredionia (Modern Carpentry) that cover the information and provide more information at about 1/3 to 1/4 the price for each book. It looks like that many examples are out of these books commonly available. Furthermore, this book has relatively few examples for each catagory. Before you spend the money on this book, check it out from your library or have them get it through interlibrary loan along with the other books mentioned.

Struss (1886-1981) was that rara avis who mastered both still photography and cinematography. Best known for his stunning camera work on F.W. Murnau's Sunrise--for which he shared the first Academy Award for cinematography in 1927--Struss was a member of Photo-Secession, an organization co-founded by Alfred Stieglitz devoted to the promotion of photography as a fine art. While Koszarski discusses Struss' contributions to the cinema, the focus of this retrospective is the artist's earlier New York pictorial work; the book is handsomely illustrated with black and white images from Struss' oeuvre, as well as his striking 1910-17 experiments in color.
Book Description
Karl Struss (1886-1981) was a master of both still and motion picture photography. A native of New York City, he first studied photography with Clarence White and soon mastered the tenets of Pictorialism. Alfred Stieglitz featured his work in a 1910 exhibition and a 1912 issue of Camera Work. Struss was also a pioneering commercial photographer, one of the first to produce photographs for magazine illustration.
After enlisting in the army during World War I, he decided not to return to New York but instead headed west, to Hollywood, where he began a new career in film, making movie stills and publicity portraits and then doing motion picture photography. His pictorial talents earned him the first Academy Award for cinematography for Sunrise (1927).
New York to Hollywood surveys this consummate artist's long career with the camera. John and Susan Edwards Harvith, who rediscovered Struss's pictorialist work in the 1970s and interviewed him at length in his later years, round out the portrait of both the man and the artist.

Missing Master Pictorialist Found!.......2002-10-08
While I admire the "straight" photography of Adams, Weston, and the Farm Security Administration photographs of the 1930's. Now that I am older, I am drawn to the romantic, soft and somewhat dreamy photographs associated with "pictorialism." I found some examples in an old book by Paul L. Anderson. Anderson also mentions a "Struss Pictorial Lens." I would find examples of "pictorialism" at museum shows. Later I found a book entitled "Pictorialism in California" with wonderful photograhps. However, this book about Karl Struss is wonderful. Particularly his still photography prior to 1918. Struss' work with night and architectural scenes are wonderful! A revelation. He didn't "do" figures well. But any photographer interested in the history of photograhy will find a visual feast. The book is well produced and high quality images. This book explores an interesting person, who for various reasons, remains almost unknown today.

Covers the waterfront of campaigning.......2006-02-06
I was very impressed with how different this book is compared to others I've read in the field and see why it's in its second edition. It discusses the incredible number of subjects needed to run a succesful campaign-in order and in-depth, but without being overwhelming. The chapters on how to train volunteeer and how to solicit large gifts, areas we've always struggled with, are totally unique and will be especially beneficial to our organization. Also, the author writes with style and wit. Highly recommended.

Its OK, but make sure you get new edition.......2005-10-24
First, I had to purchase this for a class just a few months before the new edition arrived, which was too bad. This 1993 edition is full of dated material that I hope will be gone in the new edition. The book subtitle, Hands on Tactics for Nonprofit Groups suggests that the book is for small non-profits, but almost every lesson/example is geared to larger groups, who probably do not need the book. The author stated that the information in the book is applicable/scalable to small no-profits, but a book just for small non-profits would be better for such organizations. It is easy enough to follow. Its best feature, the cookbook like feel of the book is also its worst, in that it encourages a formulaic approach to fundraising. That is very common in the fundraisng industry and needs to be cautioned against.
A complete fund-raising guide.......2000-04-07
What is best about the book is that it digs into the multitude of steps necessary to prepare for a successful campaign. When I first read the Table of Contents I was somewhat overwhelmed with the idea that so many things had to take place before actually asking for substantial contributions to our nonprofit. We were used to running a few special events and receiving just as few dollars from them. But using the clearly written text as a guide enabled us to expand our thinking and implement a process that led to significantly increased donations this year. The book was a great investment.
This book presents a fantastic plan for campaigns.......1999-06-12
I used this book almost exclusively as a reference for a capital campaign at a community college foundation. The fundraising plan outlined in the text is very good, and can be followed almost verbatim. I found that the pointers offered were very applicable to the funding plan, that is, they were specific enough to be meaningful, yet broad enough to be adapted to any fundraising situation. This book is probably most useful for those considering a capital campaign, and an especially good reference for those who are embarking on their very first campaign. The text ranks among one of the most practically applicable I have ever read.

I was so tired of trying to wade through dense books on fundraising and marketing. This book lays it out clearly and simply. Fundraising is common sense--so is this book. Should be read by anyone launching an annual and capital campaign.

Tops for the job, just like Reagan.......2004-07-25
This was just what the doctor ordered. I was able to finagle the business and cajole my parents into leaving everything either to me alone or at least with my hooks in it. Seven children and seventeen grandchildren, all scheming and backbiting to get as much as possible and fritter it away. I had to get some sort of help to get me past the family values claptrap. I mean, how are you going to do your patriotic duty to the economy and keep estates intact and working for the profit of a few? What's the point of protecting inheritances from taxes if they're just going to be sawed up into a million pieces?
