How-To Gives Beginners Wings.......2005-09-26
You may have seen scherrenschnit or cut-paper silhouettes. The Asian versions of this art move into using the paper like heavy line strokes, or the lead in stained glass. This allows techniques like filling the frames with different papers (those fabulous Asian papers!) or even backing it with a sheet painted to suit. Different colors, even metallics, for the cut paper, cutting two colors to be arranged on a fairly simply background -- the variety of techniques possible in just "cutting paper" make this a fascinating media. If you drool over decorative papers, this may be the art you've been waiting to find.

Surely this poor PFC should've gotten a shot at retirement by now, but his fans just won't let him go. After 50 years in service, Beetle still stays firmly lodged in the nation's top five comic strips, in 1,800 newspapers in 52 different countries with 200 million readers every day. Creator Mort Walker has lovingly put together this decade-by-decade compilation to commemorate Beetle's extended tour of duty, throwing in a little bit of the strip's history for good measure. Whether it was Lt. Flap's introduction to the outfit ("How come there's no blacks in this honkie outfit?") or General Halftrack's stint in sensitivity training for drooling over Miss Buxley, Walker's strip has always stayed current, even in the face of controversy. (In fact, as Walker explains, the strip owes much of its initial success to raising a ruckus. It only really took off after being banned from the Stars and Stripes for what he calls "making fun of officers.") The hundreds of black-and-white daily and Sunday strips will likely charm even those new to Camp Swampy, but it's the die-hard fans who'll appreciate Walker's final illustration: the only existing picture of Beetle Bailey's eyes. --Paul Hughes

Through The Years.......2001-11-07
Beetle Bailey has been in service for fifty years and this collection compiles artist Mort Walker's best and significant strips of the lazy soldier. The book is broken up into the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's and it's real interesting to see how the characters' look have evolved over the years. Beetle himself was originally a college student and Mr. Walker explains that at the time very few people went to college in the country and could relate to Beetle, so in order to sell the strip on a wider level he ha Beetle join the army. Obviously, Mr. Walker made a smart decision as Beetle and his Camp Swampy are still going strong.

But are they really as homogenous and conservative as we think they are? In this wide-ranging comparative study of England and the United States, Mark Clapson offers new interpretations on suburbia. The majority of people in both countries now live in suburbs, largely as a result of the rising affluence of the postwar period. Millions of Americans pursued an aspiration to settle away from the poorer town and city centres in new subdivisions, while in England people were keen to leave terraced streets and poorer suburban housing areas. Examining housing policies, the politics of affluence and social class, Clapson challenges deeply held myths by demonstrating the complexity of suburban life. He shows how suburbs are becoming increasingly multicultural and compares the minority experience in both countries. He analyzes voting patterns to reveal some surprising political trends. In addition, he discusses gender and the experience of community life. Throughout, he uncovers the similarities and differences in the English and American experience of suburbanization in the twentieth century. Book Description
In this book the author seeks to rebut the somewhat fatalistic argument that socio-economic prosperity in the cities can only be achieved by the application of global market-led policies. He argues that urban society and policy makers do have sufficient freedom of action to make local decisions on the economic and social development of deprived neighbourhoods. Drawing on evidence from six major European cities, he demonstrates that their 'Integrated Area Development' strategies, which rely on grassroots democracy and the empowerment of local communities, can deliver a social, economic, and cultural renaissance which better meets the needs of the local population than the imposition of the market-forces creed.
