Le Corbusier's Hands offers a poetic and personal portrait of Le Corbusier--a nuanced portrayal that is in contrast to the popular image of Le Corbusier the aloof modernist. The author knew Le Corbusier intimately for thirty years, first as his draftsman and main assistant, later as his colleague and personal friend. In this book, written in the mid-1980s, Wogenscky remembers his mentor in a series of revealing personal statements and evocative reflections unlike anything that exists in the vast literature on Le Corbusier.
Wogenscky draws a portrait in swift, deft strokes--50 short chapters, one leading to the next, one memory of Le Corbusier opening into another. Appearing and reappearing like a leitmotif are Le Corbusier's hands--touching, taking, drawing, offering, closing, opening, grasping, releasing: "It was his hands that revealed him. . . . They spoke all his feelings, all the vibrations of his inner life that his face tried to conceal." Wogenscky writes about Le Corbusier's work, including the famous design of the chapel at Ronchamp, his ideas for high-density Unités d'Habitation linked to the center of a "Radiant City," and his "Modulor" system for defining proportions--which Wogenscky compares to a piano tuner's finding the exact relation between sounds. He remembers the day Picasso spent with Le Corbusier at the Marseilles building site--"All day long they outdid one another in a show of modesty," he observes in amazement. He adds, speaking for himself and the others present, "We were inside a double energy field." And Wogenscky writes about Le Corbusier more personally. "I have spent years trying to understand what went on in his mind and in his hand," he tells us. With Le Corbusier's Hands, Wogenscky gives us a unique record of an enigmatic genius.

For LC enthusiasts. This book revealed "broken details" of a GIANT by one of his closest collaborators and friends. Treat this book as a semi-biography with a different perspective.

A Weston Must-Have.......2001-10-18
Anyone curious about Weston or wanting to own a representative selection of his work should buy this book. This IS Weston. This is not a few selected prints of his on a single theme, this is a wide representation of the best of Weston's work. One will find for oneself that ALL of Weston's pictures are about passion, that's what makes a picture a Weston. Here in this book are beautifully reproduced plates of his finest images, every one exuding shape and energy, and exquisite composition, none just ordinary. There are images of factories, fields, sand, wood and also the human body, all of which have been captured in all its glory by Weston. He teaches us that there is energy, art and passion in an amazing number of ways. Don't miss this fine book.
The first time.......2001-09-21
It was a nude Weston's photo of Tina Modoti, layed down on a rural house floor, in México, that had put me on the trail of both. Since then I've been delighted with the sensibility and the astonishing "color" of the B&W photos of them, nudes bodies, "nude" nature, what ever... It was the first time, almost ten years ago.

Review Summary: Edward Weston was trained as a portrait photographer and expanded his vision to include many natural shapes, including seashells, nudes, vegetables, trees, landscapes, and eroded rocks. He also did a little industrial photography, where the forms he saw also revealed pure shapes of interest to him. These shapes usually had a modernist feel to them that brings to mind Plato's theory of forms, pure ideas behind what we see every day. This book is fine overview of all phases of Mr. Weston's career, and contains many interesting and valuable essays about his career. The book is improved by having over 80 images that had not been published before this volume. The 320 duotone images are on very fine paper and are extremely well reproduced. Many would have benefited from being printed in larger sizes. If you decide to own only one book of Edward Weston's work, I suggest you choose this one.
Viewer Caution: This book contains many nude images of women, men and children that would surpass what would allow the material to obtain an R rating as a motion picture.
Review: Edward Weston's photography reveals a personal fascination with form, shape and shadow that provide a unique vision into the natural world. He was especially intrigued to see how the shapes of one object or subject could complement another. For example, his female nudes are often posed outdoors in sand dunes or beach settings where the gentle curves play off of one another. Where he focuses on eroded rocks, each one combines with another to express the equivalent of an abstract sculpture, standing out exposed by the erosion around the harder rock that forms the image.
While his landscapes could be every bit as majestic as Ansel Adams's best work, Weston's tastes and interests developed mostly independent of the leading photographers of his time. That independence gave him a greater versatility as a photographer and a more personal style. Few would mistake his ability to locate the patterns within nature and human-made objects for the work of any other photographer. To me, the artist closest to his vision was Georgia O'Keeffe.
My favorite images from this book include: Ruth Shaw, a portrait, 1922; Armco Steel, 1922; Nude, 1925; Dancer, 1927; Chambered Nautilus, 1927; Cypress, Point Lobos, 1929; Bedpan, 1930; Pepper, 1930; Soil Erosion, Carmel Valley, 1932; Church at "E" Town, 1933; Nude, 1935 (first one); Bug Tracks in Sand, 1935; Whale Vertebrae, 1934; Dunes, Oceano, 1936; Nude Series of Charis, Oceano, 1936; Zabriskie Point, 1937; Tree, Lake Tenaya, 1937; Point Lobos, 1940; Dillard King, Monteagle, Tennessee, 1941; Civilian Defense, 1941; and Nude, 1945.

Trudeau deals with Poppy Bush, the Donald and an Ink Spill.......2003-03-12
This collection of "Doonesbury" daily cartoons is from 1989, otherwise known as the first year of the George Bush administration. You might not remember what happened that year, but G. B. Trudeau and his political cartoonist colleagues announced a "Cartoonists Honeymoon Week" during which they pledged not to ridicule the new president for seven days, to give him a chance to "get a grip on the vision thing," and a way of "formally thanking him for Dan Quayle." Actually, Trudeau goes pretty easy on the new Vice-President (compare these strips with the political cartoons Pat Oliphant did during this same period collected in "What Those People Need Is a Puppy!"
However, it is Donald Trump who gets to be the cover boy on "Give Those Nymphs Some Hooters!" as "The Donald" becomes as frequent a target as the new President and the various scandals of the new administration (remember John Tower, Jack Kemp, and Ethics Czar C. Boyden Gray?). However, the real dynamic here is what is happening in the Doonesbury household. J.J. is lured by big bucks to paint neo-rocco murals on the Trump yacht (done in the style of Picasso or Michelangelo--one of those famous guys), while Mike has to put together an ad campaign to get children to smoke for R.J. Reynolds. Mike's compromised imagination gives birth to the reprehensible "Mr. Butts," but J.J. is not to be undone, giving birth on cable television to the child who brings her and Mike back together (at least for the moment). Good thing Zonker is there to help as their nanny.
Remember, these are the cartoons that Donald Trump himself could not understand and declared to be "mediocre at best," drawn by a man who White House Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater said "glorifies drugs." Trudeau is also dissed by Second Lady Marily Quayle and David B. Fishel, R.J. Reynolds spokesman on the back cover. My favorite strips are the week that the strip suffered a horrible INK SPILL! All this goes to remind us that "Doonesbury" has been America's most controversial comic strip artist and that if Trudeau does not have people totally outraged by what he does it would not be "Doonesbury."

If you're thinking about moving, first read Clyde and hari Steiner's book, "Steiners' Complete How to Move Handbook, 2nd Edition." It will either discourage or enthuse you for the adventure ahead.
In easy-to-understand terms, the San Francisco authors explain what to expect when moving across town or across the nation. But this is not just a "how to hire a moving company" book (although the authors rate the major moving companies). The book addresses the family considerations, especially for children, as well as how to sell a home, how to obtain a mortgage on a new home and how to rent. Even information on how to break a lease is included.
The book's theme is taking control. Whether you're moving for a better location, a new job or retirement, the Steiners explain how to evaluate the situation and make the move as enjoyable as possible. If the book has a fault, it is the detailed references, which become almost too complete, but that's OK. Just skip the parts you don't need.
The authors offer sage advice for handling real estate agents, whether you are a home seller, buyer or both. For example, the authors recommend not more than a 90-day listing to sell your old home. They also caution about engaging a buyeFs agent to find your new home. In fact, they recommend renting for a few months to become acquainted with a new community.
Chapter topics include Taking Control From the Beginning; Family Issues; Fending Off Mr. Tax-man; Employment Considerations; Giving Up the Old Homestead; Your Plan-Ahead Strategy; Finding the New Homestead; Moving Company Tips and Traps; How to Arrive With Your Aunt Sally's Teapot and Your Sanity Intact; and Your Countdown Moving Timetable.
The outstanding appendix includes city and real estate agent evaluation charts, Internet sites, budgeting basics and other information resources.

Not-so-helpful moving book.......2005-01-01
After reading all the glowing reviews for this book and browsing reviews for similar publications I decided to purchase Steiner's. Oh what a mistake. Perhaps the other people who reviewed this book are friends of the authors? In all fairness, the lists and forms related to moving collected in the appendix of this book are helpful. However, the arrangement and format of information throughout the rest of this handbook seems almost haphazard. For example, the chapters on financing a move and home sales come well before a discussion of creating a move timeline or how to find housing. As another review mentions, Steiners has no index. And often important topics (like "trailing spouse syndrome") are mentioned, but never discussed in much depth (what are some practical ways of alleviating the problems associated with "trailing spouse syndrome"?) The authors claim this book addresses all types of moves: overseas, military, corporate relocation, recent college grads. But honestly, the handbook would be most helpful for seasoned adults working in the corporate sector who already own a house (note the frequency of phrases like "as everyone knows" and "obviously" in chapters on finances and home buying/selling). Rather than purchase this book, most people new to moving and finding a house would benefit more from using the "relocation wizard" at www.homefair.com and buying a book on home buying.

Steiner's Complete How-To-Move Handbook.......2002-04-03
This is the most complete book on moving that I have ever read. It delivers the promised information in a very readable and entertaining text. Some of its best features include the great worksheets, charts, sample forms, lists and timelines which will assist anyone in planning and accomplishing a successful move. I have made 9 or 10 moves in the past 25 years and can say, unequivocably, that although I have read (and used) many nice "moving" books...this is absolutely the BEST!!!
A great read but somewhat outdated unfortunately.......2001-06-29
The book covers almost all topics of moving in a thorough way that really conveys a lot of information in a short space. I planned to move from NJ to Florida & it really prepared me for the moving process. Although I didn't make the move, I did hire movers within NJ and I felt much more prepared having read this book. I've heard horror stories of people's goods being held hostage for more money, broken items, missing items, the book covered it all and told what to do in case that happens. It gives you enough information, however, to avoid such disreputable movers in the first place.
One area where it falls short (unfortunately) is the internet. There are many, many resoucrs on the net and the book doesn't cover enough of them IMHO. This book was written in 1999 though, and can sort of be excused I guess. I think that they would be well advised to do an update in a year or two with more coverage of resources for moving on the net. That'd be worth five stars then...
